Working on attempt #3 for the Portraits
Posted 9 years ago3rd time shall be the charm! Until I have to do these again. The general goal is to create well composed images that tells the viewer about these characters from the Player character (Sarina) to the Boss like the WotFS and other Phantasms.
These might take a bit longer in the planning stages so that we don't have those nasty anatomy errors that I miss until the last second and get scored low as a result of me not fixing something.
I'm aiming high here so that these will be better then the previous batch. And I can finally move on to the next set of Portraits.
But before that there's an older CG I may have up in about a weeks time. As part of my Values and Scene Composition practice as well as Editing Practice.
WIPs for the new WotFS ports will be up around that time too. With me Starting with "Summer" first that was the one I was working on before the others tanked and I decided to scrap them all and start over again. It'll make the process easier and me a bit more willing to do it for little to no gain. And I haven't even got to Poor Vivian whose the leader and has not had a single one finished either.

Content Update and something else...
Posted 9 years agoYeah it's time I lower my insane standards and just accept my short comings. I'm just wasting time at this rate. I suck at composition despite know EVERYTHING about how to do it right... I... I can't even fanthon how I managed to be the much of a special case of bad.
My stuff isn't good not by any industry standard not be any professional standard. No amount of good shading and coloring (all I'm good at) and basic anatomy will over shadow the terrible composition, and while Value balancing is quite easy when your setting you levels. My confidence is so shot I can't compose anything that I think is good nor lives up to the industry standard. While I improved over these years I met many that have met and surpassed me in every way in just 3 to 4 years from sticks to wonders of art. There's an important quality I lack and that will hold me back. Confidence in my own tastes which has pretty much died this week and I have not even remotely recovered from it. Scene Composition is everything, fail to do that right and all you have is trash.
It's for the best that I just keep moving forward without any care for quality. People watched me because they liked what they saw so I'm not completely talent less and some of my recent stuff is ok. My art is my art and my game will just have to succeed on gameplay alone like all good games should. That's what I really need to get back to focusing more on. Maybe I'll get better but honestly I know all of the basics and fundamentals of art by heart and that didn't amount to anything. I study'd everything for years. If I had talent I would have reached this level years ago and be doing concept work at Square Enix by now...
What is Scene Composition, I'll explain. It's the way a scene or picture is constructed. It tells the viewer what the picture is about and what's going on without a single word. Guiding them through the scene to the focal point without being to blatant about it (unless that's the point). A Good Scene must be easy to read, something pleasing to the eyes. Nothing I did recent came close save for two pics. To do this well you must know what your doing at all times and much understand how to balance the focal point and the rest of the scene in order to create a well composed scene. You must know what you are trying to tell with this picture and how to go about showing. Knowing what rules to follow, and which to break. Every attempt I did in the past for years to now after learning it. Failed. save for maybe 1 image and even that had values issues.
They say you never reach perfection and yet the industry demands nothing less then that very thing for as little money as possible.
Update:
New practice stuff will be up later. Going to do more values practice to get into the habit of actually checking that for change.
Pose practice will be up to. And I might have a new CG up as well. An old one that's been sitting for quite a while now. Also going to be practicing Scene Composition extensively compared to everything else. I gotta think about how I'm going to go about doing that in a nice simplified manner to try different angles and arrangements.
And I think I got it. might have that up too.

Be Honest. Am I a terrible artist?
Posted 9 years agoI wanna know. Be as honest as you can.
More studing/practice, this time 3 times as hard
Posted 9 years agoI got my critiques in and the portraits are all failures. time to go back to the drawing board again. Time to go back to basics again. I've improved a lot over these 8 to 9 years but I'm still not industry good. I need to study life even more. First I need to recheck my sources for art studies. If they really aren't as good as I thought then I'll have to find new ones.
I hate Tangents, and Scene Comp Nightmares
Posted 9 years agoArt Tangents will drive you Insane. That and Scene Composition. The absolute bane of an artist's existence. Or at least mines anyway.
All it takes is a few to completely destroy a work if they aren't spun into working. These occur naturally in real life but are often things an artist must learn to avoid when possible. Like any experienced photographer would. As it can distract the viewer from the main focal point of the piece. Or just make things look way more jarring than intended.
Next is scene composition, how a scene is constructed from the object and models to the colors used can determine the mood and message of the image. If this is done poorly, it can really ruin what might be an otherwise well drawn piece. All Elements must be balanced just right to ensure that you've captured the mood you're trying to convey.
Tangents are easy to learn and avoid. Scene composition however is rather hard to explain and learn. And sadly this is what can really make or break an image.
The fact that i may have to redo all of the portraits I've done so far really pisses me off but I may have no choice. These will be used for bios on the official site once the game is farther along in development. the fact That I have to spend another year...!
I'll try to explain more of what I've learn later. I'm still going through shock right now after taking a critique that helped me pinpoint my problems to work on lead to me finding out a very horrifying bit of knowledge when it comes to design that I completely overlooked, much to my embarrassment.
I feel Like DBZA Cell right now

So while I'm going Mad, What about you guys, how are you handling art tangents and Scene Composition in your works?

Artwork Announcement, More Training
Posted 9 years agoSo I won't be posting much artwork on here beyond wips. The reason is because I want to finish improving on the dynamic lighting, Hue Shifting properly, Lighting and color relations. Design basics, and avoid tangents in artwork/photography.
No doubt these are the biggest reason why my best still pales compared to the works of others. This can hurt the game project a lot If I'm not careful so I'm going to be focusing a lot more in this area. I'll have a Huge amount of time to study and practice. At least 12 to 15 hours a day so that I can master this as quickly as possible for the sake of the project and the sake of my own artwork.
I want to make a very big leap and finally master what i've been studying over the years asap to reduce any more issues that will hurt the game projects development and reception upon release. And a lot of this is stuff I should have mastered by now over the course of these last 7 to 8 years. After almost a decade I should be much better than I am now.
So things might be a bit dead on all of my accounts across the Internet and here for awhile save for WIPs here and there. While I work on improving in the areas I'm lacking in.
Until than, Later

Road blocks
Posted 9 years agoSo no doubt it's clear that I'm grossly behind with my usual upload schedule of one CG per week. And spending so much time ironing out and piecing together the game's plot. Things are going much more slowly than planned. And me not wanting the game project's story to be bad might be hurting the physical game's development at this point.
Hmm I'm going to have to really figure something out here. Being a 1 man project, I should be making more cuts and compromises to insure the game actually comes out. It's becoming more and more clear that I'm going to have to consider doing this somewhere again.
Also and update on WotFS Spring's Portrait will be up later today, time permitting.

I was gone for quite a while.
Posted 9 years agoSadly I was away from my PC for about a week for personal family reasons. So no CGs were worked on. Though I did work on some sketches. All related to the project save for one. Mainly preparing for the on model ref pages. Was trying to skip past that in order to work more on the game itself (like getting the Unity build ready and finishing up the assets for the Stage "Waking Forest"). But for the sake of keeping things more consistent, and to make it easier for me to recruit/request help from others to help get this game finished. I'm gonna have to do them anyway. Or at least some of them. So that characters and creatures stay on model as much as possible.
On an unrelated note. I did get Pokemon Y for the 3DS. After beating it this 4th of july weekend. I can say for certain that it's not bad, but I do see how it's a bit too streamlined. DIdn't take much for me to be a tad bit overleveled during the later half of the game.
Well, more stuff will be uploaded soon.

So yeah... that was a thing
Posted 9 years agoBut it seems FA is back to normal now. Kind of... close enough.
Good news, I fixed the lighting issue in my CGs
Posted 9 years agoYes at long last, you will no longer see the poor lighting issue my stuff currently has. I spent the last several hours into the wee morning studying Light and Shadows as much as I could. And will be doing this a lot over the course of this weekend. Yes, this is why "that scene" I promised that is writing related to a current commission is a little late.
No, won't be fixing older CGs. This knowledge and correction will only be applied to pending (W.I.Ps) and new CGs from this point forward. I am already not as far along with the project as I had planned due to being the only one working on it at the moment. So I really can't afford more side tracks then I already have.
Special thanks to Sycra: https://www.youtube.com/user/Sycra And his tutorial on lighting and was the most helpful one I saw so far. While there are some other minor problems plaguing my work, lighting is the one that I had extreme difficulty fixing until I started looking up tutorials again. I Hope you finish this series some day, you had a pretty good take on the matter. I was able to finally get a proper understanding of lighting, mainly dynamic lighting.

I'll be reading up more tutorials as well over the course of the next several days to help mend this issue ASAP. Fixing the "Lack of proper atmosphere" (another problem I struggle a bit with) and "stiffness" will all be indirectly improved by this and me simply planing scenes out better.

A love of Gothic Art
Posted 10 years agoWell it happened. I am now completely obsessed with Gothic architecture. I cannot contain it any longer. My soul hungers for it. The feeling I get when I see these amazing structures ever since I was a kid. I love it, I crave it! I need it so! Which is why I'm really focusing on studying it and incorporating it into my designs! Black Towers and the Rest of Waking Forest must be filled with it!
Also have I been doing a decent job of trying not to be generic with these character designs so far? I feel like things are going good and was more or less wondering if that is still the case.

Important Project Update
Posted 10 years agoI have ideas for Sonic The Hedgehog 2D gameplay. Not sure if I'll post them. I kind of don't want to do fan games for personal reasons.
Why did I say that? Some of those ideas will likely be used in this game.
May actually have a playable version of the beta (Unity build) of "D-Resonate Sonata of the Phantasm" ready in 2016. Won't be much just following:
Waking Forest Stage
Black Towers Stage
Somnus Gate Stage
Key word there being may. It really falls on how long it takes for me to fine tune Sarina's(player) controls along with a bit of bug testing. Remember Beta to me does not mean buggy mess. it means lack of content needed for the complete game. XD

YES! I've done it!
Posted 10 years agoA very special series of posts will be up shortly explaining a key gameplay mechanic. I've been brain storming on a way to help give "D-Resonate" a unique feel to its gameplay. And I believe I've done it in a manor that fits the name "Resonate", and what I have planned for future titles in this series.
I'm Super Happy and very excited! X3 It may not seem like much but executing it in dynamic ways will be where I feel it'll shine most.

What Makes That Guy/Gal so interesting to you?
Posted 10 years agoSo while working on story element for my own projects. I was thinking a lot about some of the Shows and Movies I've seen. And the characters those stories focus on and around.
What makes a character interesting? What is it about them that helps draw you into the story? What makes you care about their triumphs and struggles?
For me it's more their interactions with the world around them and how the world reacts to them that makes a character interesting. I've never really found my self being drawn away from or bored of a character solely because of their personality alone. At least that doesn't happen often. There are some rare cases where I can't stand them. Usually only when the "Idiot Hero/Heroine" trope is taken a little too far. For example, Spongebob and Patrick during and after Season 3 of the show.
What about all of you? What do you feel makes a character interesting and why?

SWATKATS IS BACK F$^# YES!!!!!! WOOOT!!!!~
Posted 10 years agoA long time ago. During the golden age of animation known as the 90s. There was an awesome show. A great action series owned by Tuner that did fairly well during it's run. Then in 93 at the height of it's popularity. it was canned in favor of Captain Planet because Tuner felt the show was too violent. When it's about as tamed as Animated Series Batman and Power Rangers. The creators of the show tried to get Season 3 off the ground but nothing came of it out side of reruns on different channels such as boomerang and Cartoon Network.
Then one day many years later. Something awesome happened Swatkat fans once again were given something they thought was lost long ago... hope.

I cried... I cried like a child seeing a best friend he's missed for many years.
The D-Resonate can wait, I must celebrate the return of one of my favorite animated show.

Project Updates Everyone!
Posted 10 years agoWaking Forest Area 5 (all 3 routes) will uploaded around the same time. After bit of thinking I've decided to post some story boards/concepts for the games cut scenes. Cut Scenes will be handled in two ways.
comic book style cut scenes for some moments in the game's story.
In game Sprite Cut scenes with and/or without 2D Portraits like the ones scene in the Disgaea series, and Select games in the "Tales of" series (the skits portraits in this case).
Why not animated cut scenes? Well technically I could do it. It'd turn out pretty decent after a lot of polishing and hardwork. But it would require way too much time to pull off. For this project I need to balance out how much time I spend on each part of the game's development to assure things get done as correctly as possible. It's why I'm only animating the sprites.
Next week is going to be a bit complicated. But If all goes as planned I'll be uploading 3 areas per day.

D-Resonate Sonata of the Phantasm Project Update
Posted 10 years agoDevelopment should resume later today. With updates on my progress resuming on Tuesday. Depending on how negotiations go (predicted sales figures and marketing strategy), I should have one less problem to deal with. Also decided that taking breaks is a bad idea and will be cutting down on those a lot.
Gonna try and power through as much as possible. Getting 3 to 4 areas of a stage done per day. Once Waking Forest is finished I'll be dedicating a lot of time towards finishing the switch to Unity 2D. I wanted to get the sprites for at least 1 stage done first to avoid having to go through the trouble of swapping out everything for the proper sprites.
After that I'll be posting 3 to 4 areas of the test stage "Alpha Avenue" which will serve as a test for every stage/area gimmick/obstacle planed for the game. This along with "Waking Forest" will also be used as a demo for the game. "Waking Forest" showing the games visual and gameplay, "Alpha Avenue" giving the player a taste of what to expect in this little game.
I have a lot of work to do. Fortunately all stages in the game are 100% planned out. all that's left is piecing it together and debugging which will be done over the course of 2015 and 2016. With release of the final build in 2016 or 2017.
Update and I passed!...again!
Posted 11 years agoForgot to post this several days ago but I passed the written test again and was able to renew my permit. Now to get back to practicing. I'm also going to keep studying the manual anyway a little a day. Because it's really important to not forget this stuff. Game updates should resume as normal now. With the next update being screen shots of the stage/area "Waking Forest". Some artwork for the came such as NPC sketches and CGs. But first two Valentines day CGs featuring Valerie Gust. I promise I'll give drawing her a break afterwards! XD Assuming anyone is annoyed by my sudden flood of Valerie pics.
Updates and stuff
Posted 11 years agoHmm, my Bisexuality might make dating a woman a bit tougher then I thought it would for a number of reasons (still trying anyway). And online dating while effective in meeting people in this day and age without coming off as a creep. Is extremely flawed, in finding long term relationships. Not too mention factoring in compatibility, chemistry, mutual respect of each other's interests, the fact that I'm a bit of an introvert. But hey that's what all of this research is for. Also been eyeing a few books I might pick up later too. I still have plenty of time until I'm at a stable enough point to attempt this.
Wow I am enjoying this way more then I probably should. lol I always did have a soft spot for psychology.
Should pass my written test this time around. I made the mistake of not studying fines and licenses perks/restrictions the first time bit due to time. Won't do it again this time and have been studying since. Sadly not much progress made with the Game project due to time constraints and dealing with a current commission. Much to my frustration. Need to rethink my scheduling again.
Updates sort of
Posted 11 years agoEh, it's hard to not think about relationships with Valentines Day around the corner. Gonna be one of those days, I think I'll stay in again this year. And when I do get the chance date or socialize more often, I know it's going to be a long and rough road far worse then most of the haters I've experienced and witnessed on the net. But the end result will be worth it to find someone who loves me for me. 2016 onward might be rough times for me with a happy ending.

Outside of the joy of finally finishing this project and starting on the next two games. X3 That'll be wonderful on so many levels.
Anyway, A Valentine's Day CG of yes you guessed it "Valerie Gust" Will be up within the next few weeks. Currently working on a CG commission, hope to have that finished soon. I'm also open to Digital Sketch Commissions for those interested (PM me for more details, must be able to pay by paypal). Some more sprite work for the game, and a difficulty flow chart.
May also post some sketches I made earlier.
