He did not light up Africa. I don’t even know what that sentence means. What he is doing however, is running a business that will burden the lives of millions who CANNOT FUCKING AFFORD IT. “Akon’s company is not a charity, it’s a business and in order to make money from this he’s going to exploit the people. Villagers will have to take out loans from Akon’s company to be able to afford one of these things for their communities. Imagine how high the interest rate will be? Imagine how high taxes will be to compensate?
The man is working with China, as majority of products are coming from Chinese companies. The Chinese have a strong imperialist foothold in many Western and Central African countries , and government protection is so lax as the money coming in from the project will line politicians pockets for years to come. This “charity” isn’t going to the middle classes or upper classes as we have electricity–it’s going to the villages. And how do the villagers to pay off the loans? I’m talking about places in which the main source of revenue is thought the primary sector (agriculture, textiles.) But as with every business, the aim to to produce profit so guess whose gonna have increased taxes this year! Guess whose gonna have land possessed by banks as mortgaging isn’t a concept a lot of countries (eg my own) have adopted so this land will be sold to rich businessmen! Guess whose crops we going to be sold at lower prices! Guess whose gonna have to send a child to work on the streets as a hawker because they’re in so much debt due to increased interest rates and direct tax!
And the people who are congratulating Akon don’t even know about the concept of electricity here. I’m going to use Nigeria as an example. We don’t have 24/7 electricity so a giant market in Nigeria is the production and distribution of generators. (Look it up.) These are manufactured in countries such as China and Japan. Electricity was controlled by the public sector (the fucking government) through corrupt organisations such as NEPA and PHCN. Now, without these, many expats will lose their source of income and will save our government trillions in investment and loans. But the problem is, we haven’t even solved that issue yet. Last year, our previous President issued a decree stating that he has privatised the electricity market meaning that the amount of electricity an individual controls is up to their tax bracket.
Now since this “charity” is providing electricity for villagers and lower income citizens, they are going to have to invest in generators. Generators that cost at least 5-month-salary for an office temp let alone a market seller. And whose going to be manufacturing this light project? No worries, they’ll just call up some non English speaking locals who’ll do the job below minimum wage so they can create new markets that more foreigners can invest in! And guess what that means–the money doesn’t stay within our economies! No, it goes to Chinese multinationals, to American shareholders, to corrupt politicians and basically benefits everyone except the intended majority. This whole thing is built on the backs of African exploitation.
And to be honest, this is just another cry in the wind for us. How many times have some non government organisation or British prime minister or American celebrity make it a mission to “save the dark continent?” How many more David Cameron’s or Bono’s or For just £4 pounds you can save Africa! or generally teary-eyed apologists do we need to roll our eyes? As far as I’m concerned, we will not play the Noble Savage. I commend Akon for his good intentions and generally attitude towards charity but if you know nothing about our history with charities its best to keep it to yourselves. But hey, just another day, just another cause exploited for capitalism.
Also Akon has blood on his hand. He is working with Chinese companies who use conflict minerals from Eastern D.R. Congo in their products. If yall don’t know what conflict minerals are they’re basically natural resources that are extracted in conflict zones and used to perpetuate the fighting and war. There has been a war in Eastern Congo for the past 20 years and I’m 100% sure that Akon is aware of the situation. It looks like he chose to look the other way. Whilst a small percentage of Africans will be receiving electricity (which they’d have to take out loans from Akon’s company to pay for and won’t be able to pay back) thousands of Congolese people will be dying so Akon can get rich. An estimate of 45000 Congolese people die every month so y’all should be asking Akon out of those 45000 how many Congolese people dies everyday in order for him to maintain his success. Y’all should know this by now no one actually wants to help Africans, they want to exploit us. This is how it’s always been. This is so tiring to explain because I’ve been repeating myself for weeks because people don’t want to do their own fucking research.
