Fall FurBQ - Change in Leadership
General | Posted 11 years agoFirst, I would like to thank everyone who attended the Fall FurBQ the past to years and made it a tremendous success! As I posted several months ago, I moved out of the state and am no longer able to organize this event.
However, I am pleased to announce that two local furs have volunteered to pick up the mantle to continue the tradition:
Bello sincromx[at]gmail.com
Croc samuriblood90210[at]gmail.com
Please direct further questions regarding the Fall FurBQ to them. I wish them the best of luck and hope everyone will continue to contribute to this wonderful furry outing!
Best regards,
Leo Fenris

CF 2014 Report!
General | Posted 11 years agoOne of my favorite Califurs in a while! Hung out with my crew mostly, but got to hang with some people I don't get to see often, so that was awesome!
I was there friday evening, and saturday afternoon through sunday afternoon.
==Friday==
Registration - No problems here, I was pre'regged and it went smoothly. I liked the number of available kiosks, although I kind of wondered what happened to the stack of abandoned AUP's left by the printer. Seemed kinda odd. I knew exactly what I needed to do, but that's just because I've reg'd so many times. I'm not sure that if this was my first con I would have known to go to the kiosks before the reg desk. I also liked that con books were available if we wanted them, I found it very useful! I am glad I brought a lanyard though.
Pet Auction - I usually don't go to the pet auction, but I did this time. It wasn't quite as awkward as I remember and it seemed like they made a lot more money for charity than in previous years. All in all I was entertained for most of it.
Dealer's Den - OMG I love the new lay out! I could actually walk to from one booth to another without wading through a sea of furries. And it was air conditioned and nice and cool! zero complaints here, well done Califur!
Headless Lounge - I didn't suit much this con, and thus I didn't spend much time here, but at a glance it looked good.
Floe Hotel bar - $13 martini. yikes.
Friday Night Dance - I was there from about 9:30 - 11:00, and the DJ'ing was very good (Sorry don't know who it was)
BDSM101 Panel - I'm making a note here - Huge Success. Great turnout with people from very new whom I think learned new stuff and experienced furs to offered good advice to the panel. Big high five for
oggywolf
Rajni
Tiomara and
vidwulf for hosting a fantastic panel.
==Saturday==
I'm sad I missed Furry Gladiators yet again, it seems like an awesome event that I am still curious about and may want to participate in in the future.
Electronic Gaming - Great job to
Essexninetails and his lovely crew! I was blown away by the number of games they had available and it seemed like people were always in there. It also seemed like the ticket redemption counter had cooler stuff! I wish there was more advertisement for the Treasure Hunt / Pappfurazzi game. I think I want to help design a treasure hunt next year.
Drinking - I did a lot of it!
Cabaret - see detailed report below
Saturday dance - 1st DJ was awesome, 2nd one dropped the beat too much and I just.... couldn't dance to it any more.
Got to bartend shirtless in my room for lots of friends and that was so awesome, until the hotel shut us down at 3am (Probably a good thing). Oops, sorry neighbors!
==Sunday==
Hung out mostly. Good times. Which Wich (walking distance from the con) is amazing.
Scientists & Engineers furmeet - I should have known beforehand that you take a group that is stereotypically socially awkward, make them furries, and then stick them in a room together was going to be ENORMOUSLY AWKWARD. Was there anyone even leading the panel or was it just a bunch of nerds who show up in a room? I was hoping for some presentation, or discussion of current issues... or something. Thank god for the guy with the animation fursuit who offered to share his incredible creation with the attendees and got to pass it around. That was a treat, but I booked it out of that room so fast after that topic.
Fursuit Dance Competition - Even as a judge i was nervous! Firstly, I was honored to be a judge but I'm still not sure I am qualified. Heh. Demonstrating a bit in front of the group was terrifying b/c I had no idea what to really do. I also felt weird for being the only judge not in suit, but mine was already packed up and I wanted to be able to clearly see the performers with out visual interference as I tend to be a meticulous and technical judge. SO MANY AMAZING DANCERS! SO MANY ATTENDEES! Judging was really difficult, they were all incredibly talented performers and every single one has my respect. This first time event was a huge success and I think deserves a bigger spotlight next year. (Also, maybe a smaller dance floor, I know they are expensive but you had at least a yard or two on each side taken up by people watching, so that might be an opportunity to cut some of the cost to put on the event.\
==Cabaret==
Overall, a great show, I think
Rajni
Tiomara and Raven were great hosts, and special thanks to Spots for stage managing, and to Panpan, Frosty, and the other techies and Growlie for all the theatrical and back stage support that makes the show happen.
+1 for starting on time
+1 for ending on time
+2 for awesome pre-show banter that made the seating period not boring. Needs a beachball.
-1 for technical difficulties, but I understand that those are unavoidable. I just would have hoped such things would have been ironed out in the dress rehearsal. I thought the performers and the MC's did an awesome job dealing with it, I know how hard it is to pull off a show when something unexpected like that happens.
+2 for keeping the momentum of the show going* (see below) with shorter MC segments between acts. It seemed their system of timing backstage - tech - and the MC's worked out very well.
+1 for pizza ready for the crew right away and not 1.5 hours after the end of the show.
-2 for ...varying quality of the acts. Disclaimer - this is the part of the con of which i am MOST critical, because it is closest to my heart, so sorry if it is harsh at points. I intend for this to be constructive feedback, not just whining. It pains me to say this, but some of the acts were.... underwhelming. I have to say, the lip syncing with Raj and Mara's the very first act was a bit low on the energy levels. lipsyncing needs to be very high energy to make up for the lack of presence lost by not singing. It would have been fine except the very next act was the older lady singing a song that was... irrelevant, slow, boring, and all around uninteresting. At this point i was really starting to worry about the remainder of the show. Third act - the furry director skit. Disjointed, poorly written script and humor that really made little sense. I was really starting to brace for a painful show.
I stopped remembering the order of the acts at this point, but here it goes:
The new girl singing - not bad, I felt like it was her first time performing. She was cute, but too timid to wow the crowd. I'd welcome her back and hopefully her experience this year steeled her nerves
Raj's act - love it!
Mara's act - also loved it! Both had excellent choreography! I'm trying not to be biased here, but I know I am somewhat in this case ;)
Other girl in lingerie dancing - not a bad performance at all, but kind of boring because there was not enough variation in her choreography (im not sure it was choreographed before hand)
Lutris - Love the look and the voice, always nice to have beefcake on stage! The song was cute, but a little repetitive. all in all a good fun performance.
Essex - Like a Virgin - I was a little worried that the whole thing was gonna be in falsetto (which was a nice falsetto, but still falsetto). When he busted out his more natural register though, fuck man, stole the show! Chocolate Salty Balls - Awesome performance all around, zero complaints. Dudes got pipes!
Sorry to anyone that I missed, those are the ones I recall off the top of my head.
I almost want to suggest that performers send in a short WIP video or script of their performance a bit before the con for screening. Also, I think we might need a director or something to offer performers critique or suggestions on their acts, but I'm not sure furs would want to listen. Just random thoughts.
Overall a big improvement and I think it's improving, but it's still not amazeballs to be the key selling point for Califur.

IM A VERY BAD PERSON :D :D
Califur 2012 Report!
General | Posted 13 years agoFirstly! I had an amazing time and thanks to all my friends, new acquaintances, and staff members for making califur what it was!
Every year I think the con improves little by little, and attendance increases a bit every year, so that speaks to the fact that there are many things being done right.
However, there is always room for improvement. It's not like me to be so blunt and critical as im going to be, but I feel there are some things that can be done to bring Califur to the next level. Its not my intention to complain, bitch, or make personal attacks, I only delve into such detail because Califur is dear to my heart and I want to see it succeed.
1) Reg - This seems to be a persisting problem every year. My personal experience was not bad at all. There was a short line for pre-reg but alas, the printer was broken. I seems that every year I hear the same thing: the printer is broken. I realize its a special badge printer and probably more prone to breaking, and fairly expensive, but Reg =really= needs a back up. Other than that, I think it was a great improvement overall.
2) Con Book/Schedule - As neato as con books are, theyre a bit superfluous, and I agree with Califur's decision not to continue them, because the con is always strapped for cash. It is good to have paper schedules though, however I had no idea that they were at the con store. Another con-goer told me, but that should have been communicated when I reg'd either by staff or a big sign. More Signs!
3) Area guide - Other con's have this and its really invaluable. I know theres not much around the Mariott, but that's even MORE the reason to have one. It should be part of the con schedule. If that's is not doable, then at least have it posted very visibly and clearly in a common area (think like mall directories). Also, include fun activities to do in the area outside of con, e.g. Boomers, SkyHigh, etc.
4) Cabaret Tickets - So, I heard from numerous furs, that there were people that pre-reg'd and reserved Cabaret tickets, yet were unable to get them, esp if they were not able to reg until Saturday, due to the show being sold out. In fact, some of these had Patron memberships. This is UNACCEPTABLE. For people paying extra to help support the con, they should be treated with WAY more respect than that. Have a total number of tickets available to sell. Before the con starts, check the number of pre-reg's and set aside an equal number of tickets. DO NOT SELL THOSE. If on Saturday at noon, if not everyone has claimed their pre-ordered tickets, then those remaining will go on sale to the general public.
Also, consider raising the price by a few dollars. The cabaret sells out pretty much every year. The con could use the extra money to make improvements.
One other idea that sounds like it might be a little complex... charge different amounts for different times access to seating. Think airline boarding groups. Pay a few extra bucks to get in first, a bit less for the main group, and maybe discount prices for the last seating group for the nose bleed section. Just an idea.
5) Cabaret rehersal. Kudos to stego in spearheading the organization of the cabaret this year. I was very impressed with the different colored sheets for each act for lighting, sound,MC,etc. Wonderful idea. The actual rehearsal consisted of the following - lighting was doing something, but i couldnt tell you what. The sound person seemed to be completely absent, as did many of the performers. Use of the stage was a "if you kinda feel like it" ordeal. This may have worked in the past, but honestly, it results in a choppy, glitchy show. I understand this is all volunteer work, and its unreasonable to expect professional quality, but we can do better. I really think a full run through is necessary. That means: Acts are performed, in order, in costume (or as much as possible), with lights, and sound. actually give everyone a chance to iron out all the kinks BEFORE the actual performance.
6) During the show. I know this is probably going to step on some tails, but I want to be open and honest with constructive critiquing. There is too much lag between acts. Especially once the momentum gets going, having a long break before the next one really kills the mood and the momentum of the show. Keep it poppin' That said, the auctions are the worst offenders. Its not a bad idea for the purpose of raising money, but it takes the show's pace to a grinding halt.
7) Programming: Where to start. Im underwhelmed with the programming of califur every year, but it's time I laid things out. It seems like some of the panels are stuck 15 years in the past. To be blunt: How many people HONESTLY care about the dragon SIG panel (no offense to dragons, i would say the same about feline panels). As the new generation of furs emerge, we demand more interesting and engaging activities. I will be working on a more detailed list of things to include in the programming (its not cool to bitch without solutions).
Just some tips - dont put the good panels like fursuit crafting and drawing panels on friday, less people can make it. those are saturday things.
I think thats all I have for now, but I fully plan on compiling more suggestions.
To recap:
1) get a back up badge printer
2) more con schedules, and better communication where to get them
3) provide an area guide
4) reserve cabaret tickets for those you paid for them
5) Have a mandatory full run through for rehearsal
6) shorten delays between acts
7) Come up with new fresh ideas
Again, this is me focusing on the negatives and offering possible solutions to bring Califur from a mediocre con to an awesome one. Thanks for putting up with my verpose report! Love ya!

General | Posted 14 years agoI really dont want to have to repeat this over and over to everyone, and... people are going to find out anyways so theres no point in keeping it on the DL. This journal is mostly for me to link people without having to repeat everything time and time again.
Rex and I broke up. It was a complicated issue, no i dont want to talk about it, yes im okay as one can be given the circumstances.
For the most part, I just want to move on with my life and not have to trudge through details with people not involved. We're still friends, and are going to do our utmost best to prevent awkwardness with common friends. So now you know.

X-Men Furry Comic Casting Call!
General | Posted 14 years agoHello my friends!
I'm going to start on a little comic project in hopes of re-igniting the artistic spark in me.
So, I'm putting a casting call out there for all you to get a chance to have your character have a role in it.
Please reply to this with the information of your character required below. I'll select characters based on those that I find fit the best for what I have in mind, and of those I'll select at random. I'm not sure how many im going to select, just going to play that one by ear.
Anyhow! The comic is going to be VERY X-Men-like, though not directly set in the same universe. The premise is the same. The world is populated by furries, a new genetic mutation has recently arisen, granting a select few magnificent and powerful abilities!
That said, PLEASE submit your character ideas below with the following info:
Name
Age
Gender
Species
Physical Description (height, weight, body type, appearance)
Personality Type
SUPER POWER
Any specific weaknesses
Alignment (good, evil, either, both)
Thanks everyone!
Leo

That said, PLEASE submit your character ideas below with the following info:
Name
Age
Gender
Species
Physical Description (height, weight, body type, appearance)
Personality Type
SUPER POWER
Any specific weaknesses
Alignment (good, evil, either, both)
Thanks everyone!

To be an athlete....
General | Posted 15 years agoSo I never post a journal on FA, but tonight it just seemed appropriate on a more personal note.
For those who know me well, you know that im slightly (ahem >__>) obsessed with jocks and athletes. It's something i really aspire to. I used to be very much into swimming in my younger days, but post college, I wasn't really involved in athletics at all...
This has been troubling me lately, as I try to figure out the answer to my question "What will make me a jock" or less juvenile sounding, "what makes an athlete." There are alot of answers to this, and most of them valid, but I had a realization today that I felt the need to share (for some reason).
The special talent that an athlete has is to step back and stop the conscious mind from interfering. As far as I know, in all sports, the moments where one succeeds are those then s/he ceases to THINK, and simply DOES. Letting all the practice and discipline of the past have effect, and simply let things happen automatically. If you have ever experienced phenomenon personally, then you know what truely amazing beautiful thing it is.
Thanks for reading.
Leo.
