Spoilers ahead but I deem it a Public Service.

When I read articles about how parents were worried about the message this movie pushed
I thought rolling my eyes. "Oh it's that again".
But it did peaked my curiosity so I decided to watch it . . . and I watched it again because I couldn't believe what I watched the first time.

Who exactly in Asia is Disney pandering this movie to?
Any person involved in the writing of this film who also happen to raise children should be ashamed of themselves.
But this is Hollywood where people sold their soul for fame including their ability to feel shame.

First off the Red Panda is a WEAPON. It's not a sexual orientation or an identity.
It was intended as a weapon to stop entire armies.
So I can fully understand Mei's mom to be "overbearing" towards her daughter.
Her daughter is a time bomb waiting to happen and the end of the movie makes her mother's behavior understandable.
It's not that Mei's mom is horrible. She pushed her daughter to achieve high things but she was SATISFIED with the results.
A perfect example of a bad and psychologically abusive mother is Gru or Bojack Horseman.
They don't give their sons an end goal to strive for. They just break down whatever their sons achieve.

Mei can only control the Panda because she "imagines the people she loves the most in the world".
Which are not her PARENTS.
Her friends are the people she values the most.
Friends that supported her with hustling (for a boyband concert) and let her grades slip from A+ to C-.
Which mother would not be concerned with that.
I have a hard time fathoming that (possible) parents could write this script without flinching.
Unless they have serious past time mommy and daddy issues themselves.

The stakes presented in this movie.
The REASON why Mei choose to turn everything in Toronto upside down. . .
A BOY BAND CONCERT. . . That's the stakes. . . . W-T-F.
Maybe Mei sacrifices her humanity, strains her relationship with her mother to save her friends, her family, hell the city of Toronto from an alien invasion.
No . . . A BOY BAND CONCERT. How shallow can you get.

The Panda became important to Mei's identity only AFTER she exploited it to become popular and hustled money.
Really makes you miss the old school Marvel and DC comic writers when "WITH GREAT POWERS COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY" meant something.
When they wore stupid costumes to protect their identity and their significant others.

The fact that Mei losing control over the Panda has not been resolved by the end of the movie.
Who knows what she could have done to Tyler if her mom hadn't show up at the party.
(Tyler has a cool dad because he didn't SUE Mei's mom for what Mei did with his son)
The fact that her mom turned into a Godzilla Panda that functions as a twist villain
only ends up validating the conservative position of her mother and to the extend her family
that the power of the Panda is DANGEROUS and needs to be locked away.
The solution to the problem of the Panda is already presented there and it's pretty elegant.
The host will never lose the Panda and the spirit is locked in a trinket.
The host still has access to the power of the Panda in dire emergencies.
Just break the trinket and release the Panda.
Mei has no reason to stay RED but we all know why she wants to stay RED.

But to me the most offensive part in the entire movie is the ending and how it rewards BAD KARMA.
That Mei put her family in $100,000,000 in DEBT because she had to go to that STUPID boy band concert.
No mention whatsoever of the hundreds of Lawsuits from the parents of the kids traumatized during that Godzilla Panda rampage in the stadium.
(I assume nobody died that night and Canada has no Military to declare Mei and her family a threat to national security and lock them up in a high security facility for dangerous hazards.)
You see Mei's parents work overtime to cover for the damages while Mei goes out with her friends she loves more than her parents.
No remorse . . . no accountability. Everybody shrugs it off like a joke and everyone is happy.
As long as Mei can be TRUE TO HERSELF. (Damn everything around her).
THE END.

(How much you wanna bet that in a few years her friends eventually turn against her because Mei hugs all the spotlight)


This movie is DISGUSTING and the worst thing I've ever seen from Pixar.
Which is disheartening for me because this is one of the very few Disney films I looked forward to seeing.
I can completely understand the issues some parents have with the message this film pushes.
This film is an exercise in "Winning Trophies For Losing".
Imagine you have a Daughter who wants to travel halfway around the world to join ISIS because she wants to be true to her calling of fighting
against the evil heathen Western Imperialism and you as parent respond with: "The Farther You Go The Prouder I'll Be" (line from the movie)
I would have laughed it off if this story was from an zany episode of Family Guy or South Park.
But this is PIXAR.

You can be True to Yourself. You do You. Just as long as you don't end up becoming a menace to society.

I encourage parents to not let their children under 13 to see this film without their supervision.
and while they do it explain to them the concept of choice and consequences.
