Inktober!
Posted 11 years agoAo I've been doing October for 22 days now, and not everything I've drawn has been particularly relevant to FA, and FA was down for a bit there, so not everything got posted here. Everything did get posted to DeviantArt and Tumblr, although some of the material's in Scraps over on DA.
My Tumblr's at https://www.tumblr.com/blog/crocutable in case you would like to look through my Inktober drawings there! I've heard people really diss Tumblr but I actually like it a lot.

Specific purpose commissions
Posted 11 years agoMy cat's having problems, I may probably put out the call for a batch, soon.
Meanwhile, anyone want to grab up any of 5 inked sketch slots? $20/sketch, I'm hoping to finish within a week. All proceeds donated to NARAL Pro-Choice. If I don't hear anything back by next Monday, I'll call it quits and try to figure out another way to come up with a donation for them. Something really, really got under my skin, and I would like the leeway to fight back in my own way. Note me here or email me at JonServal at aol dot com.

Location: Alameda, the Island City. Where they keep the nuclear wessels or used to.

Gender identity: male-bodied
Sexual preference: kind people
Romantic preference: also, kind people

Patreon and webcomics
Posted 11 years agoHi!
I've been thinking about two different things and wanted to see what people thought (my FA audience is the most feedback so far).
Everyone always says to do a webcomic and I've actually been thinking of one - it's basically a roleplaying game I'm unlikely to run, which'd have monsters and old tech, not a furry thing. I'm not entirely sure where to post it and have been thinking of just making a Tumblr which is nothing but the comic. Any thoughts?
Everyone always says to run a Patreon (unless they're saying no, don't, that's terrible) and I kinda would like that. But I'm not quite sure what I'd like to offer as a Patreon thing. I'd been vaguely thinking of basically compiling a Monster Manual of sorts, and I'm not sure if that'd be good or what I might want to do to "sweeten the pot." Y'all are smart and like my artwork, would you have any ideas?

Assumption meme!
Posted 11 years agoProbably will open up commissions soon! Meanwhile, I'm curious about the following meme...
Write something you assume is true about me and I will confirm or deny!

Birthday
Posted 11 years agoHey, guess what?
Yep, I'm older. (And still kinda confused about that -- hey, how'd that happen? I don't feel [actual age], I was 25 a coupla months ago, I swear... oh, yeah. I guess that was a while back, wasn't it?)
Usually I don't like mentioning this for whatever reason, I guess because I'm embarrassed to be my age with so few Big Meaningful Accomplishments to show for it, but today I just felt like making it known. Later today I figure I'll see if I can watch Maleficent, and go to a Korean place and mess with really good food by dumping kochu jang all over it.
Oh hey, and in case you were looking for things to celebrate, today was the late great Jacques-Yves Cousteau's birthday, too. That guy was awesome.
[edit; this was June 11, case'n you were wondering. Will post more art soon!]

Livestream at 6 PM this evening (05/22)
Posted 11 years agoOkay! Me and Formidonis are gonna be doing a livestream, drawing at around 6 PM Pacific Daylight Time and going through 9 PM. We'll work on stuff for people -- either character portraits with a fantasy adventure theme, possibly with characters fighting monsters, and about as G/PG rated as you get with fighting monsters.
Please check out Tod's journals at http://www.furaffinity.net/user/formidonis for more information about where to go! We'll update right before we start.
AND WE'RE DOING IT! http://www.ustream.tv/channel/icon-day true believer.

Livestreaming! Believe it or not!
Posted 11 years agoOkay!
So you know livestreaming? You know, the thing I don't have any clue how to do, and all the cool artists are doing it so I wanna be cool too?
Well, tomorrow I will probably get my first chance! My friend Formidonis (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/formidonis) actually knows how to do Livestreaming and is in the area! So we were thinking of actually setting up here in my living room and doing a Livestream tomorrow - probably 6-9 PM Pacific Daylight Time on Thursday, 05/22. I'll post an update tomorrow when we are closer to actually doing it!

This is entertaining me entirely too much.
Posted 11 years agoI've discovered that you can replace the words "bitchin' Camaro" with one of the largest ankylosaurid dinosaurs in the song "Bitchin' Camaro."
Euoplocephalus! Euoplocephalus!
I ran over my neighbors!
Euoplocephalus! Euoplocephalus!
It's in all the papers!
My folks bought me a Euoplocephalus with no insurance to match
So if I happen to run you over please don't leave a scratch!
I ran over some old lady last night at the poetry slam, and
I didn't get arrested because my grampa's John Hammond.
etc etc.
This makes way more sense than filking the song as being about a bitchin' Camarasaurus.

Sketch commissions reopened!
Posted 11 years agoHi!
I'm hoping to get back into the swing of doing commissions again during this stint out of work! And the easiest thing for me to do quickly are little pen over Col-Erase pencil sketches (examples; http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12954370/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12949933/ or furry and adult themed http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13091881/) so, that's what I'm offering! I may throw in background and tone if I feel like it.
Cost is $20/initial character +$10/each additional character (this may include adding vehicles, elaborate backgrounds, etc). Ferals and humans/human-style characters are very welcome, and nearly all topics are fine, including adult themes! (Themes that are off limits include cub/young characters; nonconsensual sex; Nazi and police themes). I'll need basic descriptions, and my turnaround time will hopefully be within 7 days.
I hope to complete 10-20 of these!
Please email me details at JonServal at aol dot com (it'd help to have something about commissions in the subject line!). Please send payment upon completion to my PayPal, the same address (JonServal at aol dot com).
Thanks!

A couple of theories about how artists and fans work
Posted 11 years agoI feel like blathering a little. These are just my opinions. I might be completely and totally out of touch with reality!
1. You've probably heard someone say this before, and when they did it was probably ridiculously bitter sounding. "Furries are only interested in sex." (Furries are interested in sex, but they're interested in a batch of things including sex.) And there's certainly the truism that people will immediately zip towards color art above black and white. But you wanna know what furries really dig?
Werewolves.
Without a big unifying TV, movie or game series, what would appear to be a single furry fandom is actually a whole batch of little sub-fandoms under a huge umbrella. The most similar thing would be, I dunno, saying "comic book fans." Incidentally, I like that furry is a big-tent definition - I think it makes us a more diverse and fun fandom. People really dig art that's about their specific little interest - although the stats on that are probably a little skewed. If I drew a really nice caracal, lots of caracal fans would favorite it, partly because nearly nobody ever seems to draw 'em (too bad really, I think they're very pretty cats!). But if I drew a really nice dragon, maybe it wouldn't get so many favorites - there's a lot of dragon art out there, and a lot of it is 'way better than anything I can do!
There are a lot of little groups in fandom who will like werewolf art. Wolf fans. Old-school Werewolf the Apocalypse fans. Transformation fans. People who really like the metaphor of furry as reverting to a much more naturalistic, earth-centered point of view. Fans of horror movies. Wildlife art fans. You notice I still love drawing 'em, as much as I like looking at art of 'em.
Hopefully I have not just jinxed the next werewolf drawings I do!
2. If you're an artist, you've probably looked at your artwork and hated it. I am not talking about mild dislike here. If you're me, you've probably looked at your artwork and spotted the obvious mistakes sometime pretty shortly after you've finished it, gone oh wow this is awesome, and uploaded it in front of the world. By comparison to the dismal horrors you've just inflicted on your viewers, some of the stuff you're looking at is just awesome. Argh!
Outside of very real issues with technical skill, or (the exact opposite) very unhelpful and uncompassionate self-judgment rooted in toxic past experiences, here's why I think that is;
You know how your view of yourself and other people is likely to be off because you see a fairly filtered version of their reality, whereas you get to see your own stuff 24/7, 365/year?
This is the art version. But it's really harsh in some technical ways because you spend a lot of time looking at your art, tweaking your art, moving lines on paper or pixels on screen. Naturally, you're gonna keep doing this even after you've posted the thing or sent it to your customer! This isn't terrible in itself. Whereas you're not in anyone else's head - you can't see their process of revision and questioning. Of course you think their stuff is ace, and of course it's gonna stack up really well compared to your own work! Even more with a difference in medium. For instance, I really love big chunky welded abstract sculptures, which are things I can't possibly make myself. For all I know, there are really skilled welders out there who look at the same stuff I adore so much, and unlike me, they have a really informed opinion of what they're looking at, where it works, where it doesn't work.
I'd wonder whether folks like Iain McCaig or Terryl Whitlatch are out there somewhere, drawing creatures and costumes 'way better than I could ever do, and having those horrible little twinges of "oh man this looks terrible!" all the time.

Talking about pens/inking technique
Posted 11 years agoHi! I'm feeling chatty and wanted to get that last journal off the front page, and so y'all get my advice for whatever it's worth!
Okay, so I draw and ink traditionally, which I know is kinda weird in 2014, but my tablet and work area have a roughly 3.5 x 5" area and I find that kinda weird and cramped - plus it's easy for me to draw on paper while waiting for public transit, or in coffee shops or whatever. Here are some suggestions I wanted to make about that;
1) I've been really enjoying penciling stuff with Prismacolor Col-Erase pencil, then inking over it. This means that I can scan the picture, drop out the red or blue channel, and still have inks I can work from without having to really erase. This works for me because erasing over my inks lifts some of the ink along with my pencil lines and that's not happy-making.
1a) While I don't know and can't tell you much about alternatives to Col-Erase pencils, I can tell you which ones I like and why. The big things I am trying to do here are see what I'm doing, and still draw things lightly rather than grinding my pencil point into the paper (dunno about you but I still have problems with this).
I started out trying to use Non-Photo Blue pencils, but find them too light to easily see in some working conditions, and I've found that Blue winds up being dark enough that I can sometimes miss whether I've actually inked lines. Jake Parker uses Vermillion to pencil with, and while that's got all the good qualities I like in the Carmine Red and Light Blue, I find it's soft enough to be poor for detail (Mr. Parker's an awesome artist, so his pencils are really rough, and he inks in this great detail on the fly.) My favorites at the moment are Light Blue, because they're moderately soft, putting down a fairly visible line which is easy enough to clean up. Carmine Red pencils put down a really strong, really visible line which still cleans up easily. They're slightly softer than the Light Blue pencils, which can be useful for forcing me to work sketchier.
1b) Okay, pens! When I first started drawing I got Rotring technical pens. I do not recommend them; they're pricey, clog moderately easily, and they have fine really fixed tips, so they're great for blueprints but not for playing with line width.
Pigma Microns are better. They can be really technical and crunchy, but they don't clog, and you can vary line weight okay with them, not great.
Alvin Penstix pens have a felt tip and get a really expressive line. They aren't great for doing techy stuff, but they're okay. I actually think they're the best deal out of any of these money wise.
I've only just acquired a Pentel Arts brush pen. This is basically a really nice brush pen, much nicer than the Pigma ones. It is somewhat pricey. The good news is that this will give you awesome brush ink results, the bad news is that like using an actual brush, it may feel chunky and difficult to get spot-on.
Staedler pigment liners are my current favorite pens because I can vary line weight more than with Microns, and they'll actually flow enough that it's easier to block in dark areas with them (not big grab-the-big-marker areas, but things like shading folds or panel details). They're also good for doing a more fixed width line.
I can't tell you anything about Pilot or Copic pens, yet.
2) Here's something I've been noticing. A lot of art instruction stuff will tell you to draw from your elbow, and I've found that not only can these be relatively small movements, but I can shake this up with moving from my wrist as well. It's especially good for doing stuff in perspective, for instance. Where this relates to inking is that if I move from my elbow, I can put down a much longer continuous line and vary (or not vary!) line weight within that.
So that's all I was thinking of talking about and maybe it'll help someone!

Where this relates to inking is that if I move from my elbow, I can put down a much longer continuous line and vary (or not vary!) line weight within that.
So that's all I was thinking of talking about and maybe it'll help someone!
About Kansas, discrimination and privilege
Posted 11 years agoBecause you obviously show up here to read me ranting.
All right. So like you may know, I grew up in semi-rural Georgia, a while back now. My family's Jewish, so I got to deal with a certain level of stuff. These days I get off light, with invisibility and the occasional thing I consider anti-semitic -- back in those days, this was something I learned not to bring up, for real good reasons. Ask me about it sometime if you really need to know. I got off light too, compared to all of the people who were stuck in ghettos, exiled, murdered in pogroms, converted en masse, forced to wear proscribed clothing, that sort of fun stuff. Until I was in high school I had no freakin' clue what "Gay" was aside from "effeminate" and "bad at football" and therefore something you didn't want to be. I've seen other people in my high school get beat up for "being Gay" (were they? Shoot, I have no idea, for all I know it was someone's convenient excuse). For a while there, I lived down the way from Stone Mountain. You know, the place where the Klan burned a big cross yearly? I don't know if they still do that, but they did when I was a kid. Oh yeah, and did I mention that I'm a white dude, by most peoples' definitions of "white dude"? If there's an oppression Olympics I'm nowhere even close to competing. I got to see some really vile racism as a kid. 'Course, where I live now, over by Oakland, I get to see some pretty vile racism now as well.
Okay fine, but where am I going with this?
Where I'm going is that is persecution. Want some examples of things which aren't persecution? Well, let's see, now. How about "treating your fellow citizens [who belong to a small minority that you rarely see anyway] like other customers because it's your job [and if you don't like them because you're sure your god is skeeved at 'em, eh, they're gonna be out of your establishment soon enough]?"
So no, Kansas right-wing theocratic anti-American bigots. You don't get to scream your religion is being persecuted when it damn well isn't. And you especially don't get to scream your religion is being persecuted as a cheap and loathsome excuse for mistreating your fellow citizens.
Disgusting. Okay, I'm done for the time being, thanks.

Weasyl identity!
Posted 12 years agoHeya!
For the longest time I'd been avoiding Weasyl because I ran into this huge technical snarl trying to set up "Leucrotta" as a user ID, and that made me cranky. But eh, if there's a huge number of folks on or moving to Weasyl, I may as well have a presence there too, right?
So my Weasyl identity is https://www.weasyl.com/~thos if you want to add me there too! I don't think I'm likely to post different content from FA, for the time being.

Further Confusion Art Jam!
Posted 12 years agoHi!
I really want to meet people, hang out and draw at some point.
Currently I'm thinking of shooting for 3 PM Saturday in the Artist's Lounge. I'd love to meet up with folks then and stick around for a coupla hours!
Does the time work, or is there a different consensus on where and how to do this?

FC journal!
Posted 12 years agoHappy New Year! I figure that it'd be useful to provide an informational post, wa-hoo!

Arrival/Departure
Either Thursday & Monday, but if this day job requires, I may have to really change my schedule
Means of transportation
Public transit, unless I can mooche a lift off someone. If you're going to be driving anywhere near Oakland, please let me know! Note me here, or email me at JonServal at aol dot com.

Glashund
Who do you hang out with?
Oh geez, pretty much everyone. I can do the social butterfly thing sometime. Please note or email me if you want to set something up, and need contact information.
Relationship Status
Poly, open, things are negotiable.
How old are you?
Too bloody old. Believe it or not, that's the question that still embarrasses me.
How tall are you?
5'9"
Are you an Artist?
Negatory. I am a meat popsicle.
Do you have an artist table?
Sadly, not this year.
Do you take commissions?
Oh heck yeah! My usual prices are; $22/inks, $33/grayscale or flat value, $44/full color, for the first figure and increasing with complexity. But con sketches are going to be a little different, and things are highly negotiable. Please do approach me.
Do you do trades?
Sort of. Formalized, hey, I will trade you art, outside the con, is likely to be a no. But if we're in the same space, drawing together, I would be delighted to swap art with you.
Are you a Fursuiter?
Sadly, no, not yet.
Attending parties?
Very definitely! So if you want, please do invite me to yours!
Do you drink?
Yes!
Can I buy you a drink?
Depending on the drink, I might trade art for it.
Do you smoke?
Infrequently. The last time I had a cigarette was Thanksgiving. The time before that was somewhat before Halloween. That's... kinda infrequent.
Are you attending any panels?
Heck, yeah! It's amazing how many great artists are willing to show up and talk about their stuff. Cons are awesome that way!
Stage or public performance?
Not this year?
How do I identify my self to you?
Please use your FA handle, your real name if I know it, and please don't be too offended if I don't immediately recognize you.
Rules of engagement (physical contact)?
Hugs are okay. Handshakes are okay. Full on, no-holds-barred, doin' the nastaaaay is negotiable, k?
How can I find you?
Aha, the question! I've been hoping to arrange an art jam, in the artist's lounge or elsewhere at some point during the convention. Please please let me know if you're interested in such a thing. I can't think of anything I'd like more (well, an easily available con experience). Texts work better than phone calls, please let me know if you want my number.
Can I talk to you?
Yes, please. Though if you're gonna tell me about Khazbarakh, your 12/13 Antipaladin/Assassin, his runesword and his glowing red eyes, I've probably heard it before.
Can I give you lots of money?
I dunno, I can imagine quite a lot.
Can I give you stuff?
That's a lot more difficult. Please remember that I'm getting back from the con on the bus, and try not to get things I won't use or appreciate.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Sure, please ask!
Can I come to dinner with you?
Again - sure, please ask first.
Can I hang out with you?
Yes, but this is all theoretical - I don't have a set schedule yet. Again, I really want to set up an art jam at some point.
Can I take your picture?
Depends whether you've left the lens cap on.
How do I know if you're not looking to socialize (angry, busy or upset)?
If I'm in public, I'm probably okay with company. If I'm in public on my own, chances are I'd like company. If I'm drawing that doesn't mean I don't want company, but it does mean I might be feeling more quiet myself. That's all.
Personality Type?
Introverted, occasionally boisterous.
What's your goal for the con this year?
Look at some ridiculously good art, not beat myself up over not making the best/most popular stuff, hang out with people, try not to make myself miserable during low-energy/sad points during the con, have some drinks, dance badly, possibly get laid, draw a batch of stuff, go home wanting to draw even more. Pretty standard I think.

Desolation of Smaug
Posted 12 years agoMy pocket summary of An Unexpected Journey was a batch of Vampire LARPers get together to play D&D, only now with much more drama and shouting and intense personal doubts.
Desolation of Smaug sees our heroic group of Vampire LARPers still doing a little bit of the drama, their DM is just ridiculously awesome with mapping and descriptions, and this time, they've been joined by two veteran powergamers, one of whom is kinda getting into the interpersonal connections and non-combat interaction, and the other who's just there to feat-tree and expert build his way through Middle Earth.

Happy Thanksgiving/Channukah/etc!
Posted 12 years agoHappy Thanksgiving! Happy Channukah! How often does anyone get to say that at the same time, that's awesome...
... and hey, if anyone out there in FA land is stuck working retail tomorrow - best of luck, guys. I feel for you and even though I'm lucky enough not to be working Black Friday right now, I know how much it can suck.

Commissions open!
Posted 12 years agoHi!
I wanted to offer about 10 commissioned slots for $18 each ($9 more for each additional character). If people like that and I can finish these quickly, I'll offer more spaces!
These will be ink over blue pencil, a little like https://www.furaffinity.net/view/11925080/ or https://www.furaffinity.net/view/11569157/ or https://www.furaffinity.net/view/11445295/ with additional Col-erase pencil for added tone if I feel like it. Adult topics, non-anthros, and unusual references are fine - ask me, and if I feel uncomfy doing it, I'll say something.
If you want, please do email me at JonServal at aol dot com (Paypal's the same address) to give me character descriptions and what you'd like to see 'em doing!

Splitting a table at Further Confusion?
Posted 12 years agoHey there!
I was wondering if anyone has a Dealer or Marketplace table they might want to share (preferably Marketplace).
Until fairly recently I wasn't sure if I'd have enough money to go to the convention, and I missed the deadline for getting one. I'd still much rather work during that con than just attend, so if anyone would like to split the space at and cost of their table, I'd be more than happy to pay half!
If you're interested, please note me here or email JonServal at aol dot com.
Thanks!

Who Framed John Murdoch?
Posted 12 years agoEver thought about how well Dark City mashes up with Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
The humans created Toontown, peopled it with the toons, and can animate it to move at their whims.
Toons die and are reborn with different memories, into different settings. A toon who slammed into a cliff face in one short may be a cowboy in the next.
All because humans use cartoons to explore the depths of their own personalities. But this time one of them is different. This toon can animate.
Cue big telekinetic fight between Popeye and Bluto. Does ya know da way to Shell Beach, Olive? Ya has da power!

John Hughes' Dune!
Posted 12 years agoInspired in part by Denis Medri's awesome '80s Star Wars art; an attempt to capitalize on '80s nostalgia by remaking Dune as a heartwarming, John Hughes styled, high school epic!
... See the whole thing starts when the principal, Shaddam IV (Christopher Lloyd), feels threatened by the kindly wise physics teacher, Leto (Robin Williams), who's gaining support among the faculty. He enlists the help of the Guidance Counselor, Helen Mohiam and the immense Coach Vlad Harkonen. But they really aren't getting anywhere until Piter de Vries, the nerdy guy who runs the computer lab (Rick Moranis) is inspired by a guest appearance by Cheech Marin as the "Guild Navigator," emerging from the cloud of "spice gas" in his VW microbus. They come up with the idea of framing Leto for passing drugs to Paul, the school's up and coming football star, who regards the physics teacher as pretty much a father. Leto's fired and Paul is sent off to a different school, clearing the way for the Coach's favorite, Feyd-Rautha, to take over the team.
Things look bleak, but during an intense night of underage drinking, Paul successfully "conquers the worm" and downs an epic amount of tequila with no ill effect. He wins over the misfits from his new school, and using the Weirdass Way, forges them into an effective football team. During the big game, Feyd-Rautha's discovered trying to win by doping Paul up. The Fremen win the game against the Sardaukar, Shaddam retires, Feyd-Rautha's expelled, and Paul makes his triumphant return!
Features a soundtrack by Toto!
