Pirate YCH Reopened!
General | Posted 7 years agoHello all,
Okay so I finished the first 15 of my pirate YCH (seen here) https://www.furaffinity.net/view/27104386/
at first I was going to expand it to people who requested after the initial 15 filled but there were quite a few so I've decided to just reopen it without a limit so people don't miss out. Feel free to note me, I'll remove the 'filled' marker on the YCH's page.

GloriousCorgi ! I've heard of pixie frogs, but pixel frogs?!Back and Kinda Warm!
General | Posted 8 years agoHeats back on, bringing my apartment from a chilly 31F to a tolerable 55F (which is still below city law but let's just take our victories where they are). I'll be getting back to work on comms and personal art now, though I'll be holding off on my intended big reveal until later in the week or weekend for the sake of just not feeling up to it.
Commission Notice 1/2/18
General | Posted 8 years agoHello Everyone,
I'm putting a notice out to let anyone with a current commission know that for the next day or two no progress will be made on commissions for the following reason.
The heat in my apartment building has been weak and/or off for the past couple of days. For some clarification I live in NYC and the temperatures have been dipping between 5 and 15F depending. This is itself not an exceptional concern and I have a space heater for just such an occasion (as much as I hate paying for heat when I pay rent for that utility, such is life). However as of this morning the hot water is also off in my building. The landlord is presumably moving to fix it before the time deadline passes for any of the tenants to call the city housing authority but the point is until such time I've been reliant on boiling water and using a dish towel to 'shower' and in general it's severely undermining my ability to do much in my own home besides take care of my pets and hide under the sheets. I don't anticipate this problem will last more than a day or two but I felt it appropriate to say this because I pride myself on reasonably fast turn-arounds.
Stay Warm All and I'll be back as soon as I can,
Lex

End of the Year Letter, 2017
General | Posted 8 years agoHello Everyone,
I know it's been a quiet week here from me. Mostly because I've been working on people's holiday comms so a lot of stuff I've done can't be shown just yet! So I wanted to take the time to talk a little and say thank you. It may feel like forever ago but it's only been a year of me doing commissioned art. My first accepted one was January 2017. At no point before that did I ever think I could have gotten a chance to make any profit from my work or that people even wanted it. It was a busy year and a lot has happened with my work. My setting has shored up a lot. From last year's only character's being Suki and Hiro we're up to a fairly big cast of new faces like Karen, the Mudsalt Bandits and Ari. I'm absurdly flattered people have been enjoying my work and I guess I just wanted to say thank you and here's to hoping for another productive year.
Love all,
Lex

General | Posted 8 years agoHello everyone,
Going to be a busy IRL week and I know it'll be slow on art but in the flurry of confusion surrounding my IRL test (still don't know about results) and the YCH for halloween I completely neglected to say thank you for the new landmark for my DA page: double past the last with 20k views (well 22k as of writing) and 400 watchers! You guys are all so great for helping encourage me and I felt like maybe instead of coming up with a thank you image again myself, I'd open the floor for contest:
In the replies here suggest an image. It must meet the following critera
1) Must feature one of my characters
2) Must be PG-13ish (so pretty much no nudity, but otherwise go ahead)
3) One entry per person! Yes, if you have a DA and an FA, you still can only enter once.
Lists from DA and FA will be combined before the winner is drawn.
If you have more of a vague idea than a specific image, that's okay, as long as it meets criteria its okay. The winner will be selected at random and I'll base the thank you image off it.
You can submit ideas from now until Friday morning (11/24, 9:00am EST). I look forward to what you come up with!

Freezing Again
General | Posted 8 years agoSeriously I'm pretty sure I posted something similar last year but it's really infuriating how hard it is to to do artwork when the heat is off. I'm barely able to stop hiding in my bed. If this doesn't resolve soon I'm going to start using a laptop purely for productivity needs.
Commissions Open for September
General | Posted 8 years agoHey everyone.
Got a big YCH planned for October since Halloween is my favorite holiday but I guess I just wanted to announce that the queue is empty so if people would like commissions, I'm open. Figured it'd be good to mention since last time a YCH came around it strangle my queue for a while.

Busy Week!
General | Posted 8 years agoOkay!
So I'll be off from non-art work from today through the end of the week. Mostly this is because it's me and my twin sister's birthday and she'll be going out of state so I'm going to go watch her dog/house for her. I'll be out from mid-Tuesday to early Thursday. During that time I'll be working on the sketches and inking for a couple of upcoming commissions to avoid it being a complete time sink. I'll have DA on my phone if people have questions about stuff!
Have a good week all!

Weekend Writing, Happy Mother's Day and Lore Dumps
General | Posted 8 years agoHello! First off happy mothers day to all those celebrating. I visited my family yesterday because naturally nursing home workers kinda need to take care of our whole collection of mothers lol. Anyhow I'm happy I got all my goal art for the weekend done on Friday but to offset the loss of a day I'll be working tonight even if it's just getting sketches and inks done.
Next big thing is I've used my writing time this week for lore-dumping about my setting: the Witch Sea. I hope you all find it interesting. I'd love to someday create a setting people would enjoy working with and RPing in ^^. Lemme know what you think.

Open Commissions and YCH Stuff
General | Posted 8 years agoHello everyone!
My Internet is down at the moment but thankfully I got the final YCHs from round one out before that and it looks like today marks the completion of the first 25! 25 submissions, 30+ characters, one trip to the hospital and a whole lot of ^^ emotes in about 2 weeks! I'm on my phone but when my desktop is back online we'll get them up.
Now then commissions are back open and there was some questions about if I would do more of the YCH that I have been. I flipped around a couple times on what exactly but ultimately this will be the policy and I think it'll make everyone happy because it's the most economical: all previous YCHs will remain available at their original listed price. So that means the current one will still be 8USD per character. If your one of the people who asked before and I quoted you higher you can reduce your estimate accordingly ^^. A few people have filed commissions since the YCH-storm started and I'll be listing the work order as soon as I can get off using my phone. I'll be trying to figure out a way to keep the list on the front page here rather than in journal entries too.
I'll gush more in the upcoming posts but thank you so much to everyone who jumped on this first YCH. I was not expecting it to hit off like that. I look forward to working more for people as well as posting my own stuff I've been planning between YCHs.

YCH Update 4/22
General | Posted 8 years agoA bit of business followed by a bit of talk...
And at 25, today I'll be closing requests for this YCH. Simply put I need to actually slow down the incoming requests in the name of getting the ones I have done and do the group finale. If you still wanted to participate in this after I'm done I do have some options to help out ^^:
1) My regular commission sheet is available here: http://lexhanley.deviantart.com/art.....2017-665368066 if you want something in this style after the YCH ends.
2) For those who really wanted this pricing range, I'd like to announce that the next YCH will be announced at the end of May and go through June and will run at the same price scheme.
On a talk level I just wanted to stop and say how absurdly thankful I am to people who participated in this first YCH, be it directly by commissioning or indirectly by signal boosting or fav'ing the announcement. When I set this up I was expecting at most 3 or so participants and this has totally blown past my expectations. I've learned a lot about my work from this not only in terms of how to work with characters from a wide range of styles and adapt them to my own but also about where my strengths lie. I really never would have appreciated how much I enjoy comedy writing these until I decided to try it and certainly I suspect that will have far reaching impacts on my work in the future. I know that future YCH's probably won't be so vast in scope. My work is niche and I appreciate that for better or worse but I wanted to say thank you, thank you so much. The confidence and experience from this will extend far past this project.

YCH- I wonder
General | Posted 8 years agoPart of me wants to try out doing one of those YCH thingies that people do on FA a bunch but the other part of me feels like I'm not good enough and will be bummed when I get no takers on it (especially if its one of those group ones and I end up with like 1/3 slots filled). But the other part of me feels like I've made a lot of progress over the last couple of months by being less down on myself so maybe I shouldn't let my worry get in the way. Besides if I'm worried I could always make it inexpensive.
F-f-freezing and fanart
General | Posted 9 years agoI'm not unproductive right now I promise. It's just so darn cold! My reptiles are safe with their supplemental lamps but I can't run the space heater at night so the first half of each weekend day is me trying to warm up the place so I can work. I'd bag my sketchpad and go to the coffee shop but the last few times I did people have come over to compliment me on my drawing and luckily I've been drawing something PG at the time. Needless to say it's kind of dissuading me from getting anything done outside of that realm. By the by I've enjoyed trying out making fanart like I did last week but I'm kind of lacking inspiration because of how little media I actually consume (I'm just very... rapid in my attention and I rarely sit down to watch much of anything and my gaming interests are largely older roms) and I lack a TV so I don't passively see much. I guess what I'm saying is I'm open to suggestions or commissions for fanart fetish work, something in the past I've said I'm not.
On Using My Work Online
General | Posted 9 years agoHello all,
This is coming up because of something I found out last night but I was contacted to be informed that a piece of my art would be featured in a YouTube artist's video series critiquing pieces found online. While normally I would be flattered, the problem is the piece in question was part of a commission series so I contacted the YouTuber and explained that I would rather not have the work featured because it would not be fair to have his character used without permission. I know a lot of people don't hold idea of people's original characters as being particularly sacred and of course fair use would dictate work online can be used in such a way. Even the argument that 'it's already online where everyone can see it' is valid. But I explained that attention for furries outside of the fandom can a lot of times be toxic and that I didn't doubt his sincere desire to make good educational, YouTube is kind of a vicious (I think the term I used was 'cesspool' but that's just me being melodramatic). Anyhow he was polite enough to not take a stand on the subject and agreed to not use the piece so I just wanted to say thank you on that subject. Honestly it's absurdly pleasant compared to many interactions I've had online lately for someone to do that so I will say he's channel is very nice, go take a lookie. People who conduct themselves with some civility online deserve the attention even if it's just a rando on FA anonymously saying so like me.

Hello All!
General | Posted 9 years agoHello! This will be my first FurAffinity account. I was nudged to set one up by a friend. Most of my work is on my deviantArt page (http://lexhanley.deviantart.com/) but I'm not inclined to transfer all of it over because honestly I never like work that I did more than a couple of days ago. I mostly concern myself with simple illustrations and pixel art animations. Not much else to say, really! Have a look.
