Thumbnails
Posted a year agoI've been noticing an increasing amount of artists putting cropped thumbnails on their posts on various sites - some sites don't get it, other sites do. I don't really... understand the logic in it? I mean, it's a NSFW account, on a NSFW site, or otherwise filtered and separate from normal SFW content. Why put a cropped thumbnail on it?
I mean, I could understand if it was fetish content that's abnormal from your usual content, but that's what makes this trend even more confusing for me... It's not consistent! I'm seeing artists put cropped thumbnails on vanilla NSFW content, only to then later on post more vanilla NSFW content without a cropped thumbnail! I'm also seeing SFW posts with cropped thumbnails! Why!
I personally find cropped thumbnails annoying to sort through on my feeds. When I scroll through posts, there's a lot of stuff that my eyes gloss over. Stream announcements, YCH's, any post that doesn't interest me (like simple headshots or the like). My eyes might catch on one of those things if they happen to catch my interest but they tend to go ignored. So, naturally, if a post I would be interested in has a thumbnail cropped to the point it's just a headshot (which tends to be the case), I'm going to completely ignore it. Which is frustrating for me, because it's art I'd enjoy, that I'm not going to see.
So... Why the increasing amount of weird thumbnail usage???

FA's policy update
Posted a year agoI don't normally read the FA policy changes or really get involved with them, as they mostly affect artists and, well... I'm not an artist. I know it's not a great mentality to have considering realistically I post art I get here, so it DOES affect me, but... Anyway.
Point being, from what I've heard the latest policy changes will affect some of my major kinks: Impregnation and breeding.
From what I've heard, the policy update will classify gametes - that being eggs - as fetuses, and thusly cub content. Naturally, this is stupid. Policy updates like this have come and gone and frankly they just get stupider and stupider.
One of the most common themes found in impregnation and related content is a depiction of a gamete being attacked by spermatozoa in the process of - you guessed it - impregnation. By classifying the depiction of such as cub content, you are now completely removing a rather enjoyable aspect of a kink from the entire website, and nuking the galleries of many artists and commissioners.
Now, I get it, cub is something that's been cracked down on a lot, with many efforts being made to keep it off the site. But there's such a thing as cracking down TOO MUCH! This is frankly ridiculous!
With all this being said, I am once again reminding everyone to BRANCH OUT! FA has been one of the best furry gallery sites for a long time but as with most sites it will always end up having issues. Artists, do not rely on singular sites for galleries or socials. Branch out, keep multiple galleries going, use tools provided to help artists with such things! I'm using PostyBirb and I'm not even an artist! All in efforts to keep my galleries up-to-date because I want people to enjoy the art I've gotten as much as I want to enjoy it and share it.
Twitter and FA have been the go-to for so long (particularly after Tumblr) but while they're the "biggest" sites they also have the most issues. Whatever you're qualms against other sites, there are options, don't rely on just one. Weasyl, Furtastic, SoFurry, InkBunny, Itaku, Bluesky, and other options that I've likely not heard of! Use them! Post on them! At the very least create an account and put it in your linktree so your watchers can follow you there in case shit hits the fan!

Posted a year agoThe Hacker got literally nothing out of this except an entire community (+hackers) focused on him. All we lost was a couple days of a single gallery site. Meanwhile, because of this whole fiasco, everyone's suddenly posting and creating alt sites (again), which is actually a GOOD thing!

Regarding multi-site comments

When following artists on multiple sites, if you see the same post on multiple sites, how do you manage your comments?
Do you:
1: Leave the same comment on each site's post?
2: Leave a different comment on each site's post?
3: Leave a comment on a specific site's post (if available)?
4: Only comment on the first site's post you see?
This is just purely curiosity on my part. Personally I sometimes do 3, sometimes 4, and I think I've only partially done 2 once or twice.

Regarding snake cock tagging
Posted 2 years agoAs I dig through Itaku's tagging wiki for my latest post, I realise that there's a lot of confusion regarding tags relating to characters having a snake for a cock. There's some pictures where it's exactly that, but then there's some where it's referring to snake's penises, not penises that are snakes. And there's even some still that don't appear to be related to the tag (though I could be wrong, should fix those...)
I realised the same thing a good bit back on FA, before Itaku was even a thing. It's hard to get a tag that says "Penis that is a snake" that can't be confused with "Snake that has a penis". Back then I decided to create my own tag for it; Serpenphallus. Serpent phallus. It's clear, and it's clever.
I only realised after posting my latest post and going through to fix my tag groups in Postybirb to better fit Itaku's tagging guidelines, that I used "Serpenphallus" on one of my prior posts; Scug Mother.
It immediately made me feel bad, as I'd inadvertently created a tag on Itaku (I went and added a description to it in the tag wiki just so) but it also made me realise... Why not suggest it be standardized?
Currently, as far as I can tell, there's not many penis-that-is-a-snake pics on Itaku as yet, so why not use a new, clearer tag for it than the old "snake_penis" tag we use now, which is also being used for snakes with dicks?
This is just a suggestion, of course, I'm not going to harass Itaku's admin team or even break the tagging guidelines - I'll fix my tags if it's a problem. I just think it'd be way easier to find Serpenphallus pics, than it will be to find snake_cock pics.

Twitter got stupider
Posted 2 years agoToday I learned that Elon has made yet more stupid decisions for Twitter. PSA to any and all artists that see this, Twitter is NO LONGER A VALID SITE FOR ART!
To explain:
Elon refused to pay Google's cloud networking contract, apparently, which has severely limited Twitter's storage usage. This is why Postybirb was blocked from using Twitter's API, and it is also the reason Twitter stopped loading for me yesterday. Why? Because if you don't have Twitter Blue you can only see 300 posts a day. 3000 if you do, 300 if you only just got it. So for someone like me who has a LOT of artists I've followed on Twitter, I can no longer see all those posts.
This change thoroughly shafts artists and followers, because artists post more than one post a day including non-art posts. So even if you follow less than 300 people, you're not going to see all the posts. Especially if you browse Twitter for more than just your follows. Hell, this means me checking accounts that follow me to verify they're not bots is taking up the amount of posts I can see.
So I repeat; TWITTER IS NO LONGER A VALID SITE FOR ART DUE TO LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF POSTS USERS CAN SEE A DAY. I mean, to be real, it never was a valid art site. Just something to use. But not it's not even good as a social media site. You can't scroll or browse, and you can barely even see posts from people you follow.

Posted 2 years agoIs anyone able to get Itaku to work? It's reporting an error 500 on every page I try to load.
Alternate Sites
Posted 2 years agoI don't plan on leaving Furaffinity, nor do I plan on completely migrating to another website. HOWEVER, in light of recent events I thought it smart to branch out to other galleries, to help preserve my little blip on the internet. So, as a precautionary measure, any future art I upload will be uploaded to extra sites and not JUST Furaffinity.
Any old art i.e. art already uploaded to FA will not be uploaded to these other sites UNLESS something happens that forces me to completely abandon FA, either my account getting struck or FA itself becoming too toxic.
So, with that in mind, I thought it'd be smart to provide links to these other galleries for anyone who wishes to follow me (though I have my doubts if anyone would given I'm just a silly fen commissioner and don't actually art myself).
Bear in mind I haven't fully looked at alternate sites yet (and don't remember what sites I have logins to), so this list might be incomplete. I'll generally follow where other artists go, for the sake of having options and the sake of keeping in touch with artists I like.

Well, even if you don't, I think people should. Because they've had a series of unfortunate and frankly unfair blows that have made life difficult for them, leading them to come to the decision that art is no longer worth it. I don't think it's fair for someone to be forced to stop doing something they like doing, simply because of people being stupid and life throwing them hard balls.
So I've decided to send out a signal boost.
BeardofZeus doesn't deserve the hand that they've been dealt. I implore anyone that sees this Journal to go check them out. Take a look at their art, their animations, because their gallery is full of some really good pieces. Hit them up on Twitter @ Buzzindorf if you can. Help them reach the numbers they used to have, in fact help them reach what they almost had before they lost it. Going from almost 3k to just 20 is painful, and it's not fair.
Please. Artists do need support at times, and I hate to see people suffer.
