I think that this should be a smiley used to represent an otter. Note the rudder. :3

Reflections on 9-11
Posted 14 years agoI just got back from an Interfaith gathering in memory of 9/11 where leaders of all faith groups came together to remember those events that changed this nation 10 years ago. I can only hope that people of all faith and ethical traditions can and will continue to work together to make the USA better than it ever was.
It was good to see that kind of event going on, because 9/11 seemed to do almost the polar opposite of bringing people together for a good long while. It created several bitter divisions in American society that sill have an impact to this day. Misunderstanding and ignorance still run rampant, and this affects many American families in a very negative way. Instead of using this as a constructive opportunity to do things like provide comparative religions classes in public schools to clear up misunderstandings, it seems that all people want to do is spew hatred against a whole faith all because of what a very slim minority of that faith did 10 years ago.
However, there is still a bit of hope left for America. All this raging intolerance may actually be the death throes of intolerance itself. Each passing day the younger generation gains more and more understanding for themselves of what other people actually think and believe, instead of what certain media outlets and pulpits make them out to be. Of course, this leads to the overwhelming realization that the "them" is really a lot like "us." This is the kind of thing that intolerance wouldn't want to have happen, because it would lead to it's death.
I would love to one day live in an America where even though I may be of a completely different ethical tradition than my next door neighbors, we would still recognize each other as fellow Americans. If I can't live in that America, then I'll work to make sure the next generation after me does.
Also, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the great losses that occurred on 9/11 and in the wars afterwards: The people flying on those planes that were turned into missiles by the terrorists to hit the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, as well as those who took back control of the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania to prevent another building in DC from getting hit. All those who were working in the World Trade Centre and Pentagon that died that day. All the first responders and emergency workers that gave their lives to save the lives of others. Also, all of our brave men and women in uniform who where KIA while fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Let's remember all these people, and help to create an America that they would have all loved to live in.
Take advantage of this day as well to extend your thanks to any emergency workers and first responders that you know in your lives, as well as any of our men and women serving in one of the branches of our nation's military. Also be glad for those close to you that are friends and family that are living, and be grateful to be alive and living in this great nation where there's so much opportunity. For those of you that are not living in America, maybe this can be another opportunity to remind ourselves that we are a great global community. I remember hearing stories of how people would line the ground in front of American embassies with flowers in the time after 9/11, and would stand in solidarity as a global community. Let's not forget this as we move on.
Finally, I'd like to share a couple of things I felt appropriate for this day. The first is a picture of the light sculpture memorial for 9/11, which I feel can show that there's a bright future ahead: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.ne.....49030744_n.jpg
The second thing I'd like to share is the song "The Sound of Silence." I know that a lot of people after hearing it want it played at their memorial services, and it seems this particular memorial at Ground Zero had the same idea. Here's a video of Paul Simon himself performing that song at Ground Zero:

Update: Physics Tutoring and More
Posted 14 years agoFirst things first, recently I was offered a job as a Physics tutor at my university. What this means is that I'll get to sit around for about an hour or so a few days doing what I do best which is helping people understand Physics. Best thing is, I'll be getting paid to do it too. Here's hoping that the year is going to be an awesome one.
Also I just saw this awesome MMO that's in the works: http://www.astronautmmo.com/dmf/ It's NASA's official MMO, and it seems that there's a fair bit of cool stuff in there. One of the character classes is Physicist too. :3
I also get to head off to college pretty soon, and it's going to be awesome. :3 This semester is going to be a fun one, and I'll be taking the following courses:
Advanced Electromagnetic Field Theory (Probably my hardest class)
Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (Could be difficult, but it's numbered at a lower value than Electromagnetism)
Ordinary Differential Equations with Numerical Methods (Auditing)
Global Christianity (Learning more about different cultures is always a good thing, and for some reason I've found religion classes to be the best way to learn about other cultures)
Research Project-Based Advanced Laboratory (This is a fun one. We get to make our own experiments and stuff.)
And I'll also have all those fun Junior seminars in Physics (my main major) Religion (my secondary major) and Math (the minor I am now contemplating). Overall, this semester is going to be cool.

You can easily tell the level of ignorance of a particular politician by how much they deny basic fact. Also, any ignorant person in that respect is largely unqualified to run any sort of national office position.

Here in California
Posted 14 years agoWell now I has made it to California, where I am now temporarily in the Monterey Bay/Silicon Valley area for a bit. So far the weather is nice, and even the heat isn't excruciatingly horrible. Oh, and there's no little mosquitoes out to suck my blood and make me itch all over the place.
While here I plan on visiting the aquarium (To see the cute new baby ottah! :3), a few other places in the Monterey Bay area, and to visit some graduate schools that I have my eyes on that are close by (Stanford and Berkeley). It's going to be a fun time! ^.^

Heading off to California
Posted 14 years agoI am heading off to vacation for a week in California. I hope that it's a good time, and I'll be sure to post some pictures of my exploits. Namely those involving seeing the ottahs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. :3

This is yet another reason why ottahs don't make good pets. They are pretty feisty, and will bite you if you touch them. (the wild ones at least, but eventually even otters in captivity will bite humans if they touch them) Even though you meant all the good in the world if you rescue an ottah from a tough spot, prepare for stuffs like this. :3

I should have researched this
Posted 14 years agoMaking Text-Based RPGs doesn't seem to hard now
Posted 14 years agoAfter learning up on some programming over the summer, I have found that I might actually know enough coding with which to create a text-based RPG. Now I have a whole bunch of ideas going through my head about how to go about doing this, and I'm also wondering how complex I can make it. Maybe I could make a fully-fleshed out game with a bestiary, spells, equipment, etc etc, or I could just leave it as simple as moving around and interacting with stuffs.
What do you think FA? If you play any text-based games, what kinds of stories do you like to play through? What kinds of stories do you like to see?

I was talking to my mate...
Posted 14 years ago...and then I decided to link him to this video of John Lennon's cover of "Stand by Me." Before you know it, we had the sappiest exchange of favorite love songs ever. These are the results, and I hope you enjoy too! ^>^
"Stand By Me" covered by John Lennon:
"Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker
"I Can't Hold Back" by Survivor
"Crystal" by Stevie Nicks
"You're the Inspiration" by Chicago
"It's All Coming Back to me Now" by Celine Dion
"Devotion" by the Indigo Girls
I love you so much
velfred, my cutiemuffin honeypie! <3

Posted 14 years agoI noticed that there have been a lot of journals about people quitting FA and then heading off to Inkbunny for some reason or another. Quite frankly, I have no idea what it is about that site that makes it a quick second choice for furries. Does anybody know why someone would choose to go to Inkbunny? Is there something about the site that makes certain things better on there vs FA, or would they be about the same. I'm just a curious otter and I want to know more. Although judging by the wikiFur article, so far I am unimpressed...

But this is amazing news indeed. I must now look at grad schools in NY as possible options.

On not posting frequently...
Posted 14 years agoLet's just be honest here: I do not have as much time as I used to to post stuff onto this site.
It just kind of annoys me whenever I do get the chance to post something and one of the first things to come up in my comment feed is something along the lines of "Where have you been?" or "Y u no post on FA?" I work in a pretty involved Physics Research job nowadays, and pretty soon after that I also have some of the most involved classes coming up next semester. All I would need to do is mention the titles of the courses I'm taking and y'all would know just how busy I will be in the upcoming semester. In between that, some of the extracurricular stuff I am doing, and making sure I have a chance to talk to my mate and other important people in my life on a daily basis, I am a very busy person.
Yes, I do come on to this site every day if not at least every other day, but no I do not really have time to post stuff. I mostly just have time to look at a few pictures and fave them, or just to look through my faves section. I rarely have time to read through journals and whatnot, and to even take part in things like livestreams as often as I would like to. I happen to have a pretty full life at this point, and I consider that a good thing. I like being able to take a break every now and again to do some furry stuff, but I also like that I have a lot going on in other parts of my life. Even though there are a few things I could work on, I feel almost balanced for the first time in my life.
I'm certain I'm not the only one who's busy life keeps them from posting a lot of stuff, and I'm sure that people can relate to this level of busy at some point in their lives. What kind of stuff makes you busy? Also, does people commenting on your lack of coming on to FA to post stuff irk you as much as it does me?

What kind of stuff makes you busy? Also, does people commenting on your lack of coming on to FA to post stuff irk you as much as it does me?
HEY TWIN CITIES FURS!
Posted 14 years agoNow that I have y'all's attention, I would like to ask y'all about something. My mate
velfred wants to move at some point into the Twin Cities, but he and I both are stumped as to where he could have a temporary home before he moves into an apartment and gets a job of his own. So what I'd like is to see if we could get some information on a cheap/free place for him to stay and if there are any job listings in the area that he could take advantage of. Preferably, I'd like info on locations that are:
1) maybe around under $70 per day
2) have internet access
3) (maybe not as important, but might be good) around the Hamline-Midway area.
4) have easy access to the mass transit
We'll at least figure out #3 for when he finally gets a job and can get a lease for an apartment. Right now, he just wants to come soon, so any help from y'all furries in helping us list places would be appreciated. I would offer my own housing, but right now my living situation is still a college dorm so all kinds of strange rules and restrictions apply to my living place that would prevent him from staying here any times other than the weekends. The more help I can get on this one, the merrier. I'm just at a loss as to what would be good for around the area.

Is done with pure mathematics
Posted 14 years agoI have just finished up the last pure mathematics assignment that I'll ever have to do in ever. Now all the math that I learn from here on out will be directly linked to the Physics that I do. This makes me a very happy otter. *rudderwags*
So we have no more debaters on FA?

I was hoping that journal would get a few more thoughts. Seriously, go there and say what you think is going to happen.

Now what?
Posted 14 years agoSure, we just wiped the big bad guy off the face of The Earth, but what do we do from here on out? I understand that this is indeed a time to be happy and a good day to be American, but I just wonder what the future has in store. Are we only halfway through this war on terror? Would it be a good idea to pull out of the Middle East and other parts of the Muslim World right now and just wait for it to settle itself out? Will we ever see a peaceful Middle East that would be reminiscent of the Empire that advanced knowledge while Europe was in the Dark Ages? Or will Middle Eastern peace be forever unobtainable and will we decide to stick ourselves there forever?
What do you think FA? Now what?

Pretty soon, I shall no longer be a teenager
Posted 14 years agoThat's right, I'll be turning 20 tomorrow. ...which doesn't mean a lot of fun stuff at all in America. Oh well, at least I get to be older.
Studio Ghibli Closing?
Posted 14 years agohttp://www.geekosystem.com/studio-ghibli-closing/
This news story is by far one of the more upsetting things I've read. However, there is still hope so long as their next movie sells well. I'm assuming this means selling well on the stateside, so I'll probably be going to it in theatres as often as I could. I'd hate to see the animation studio that created my favorite animated films close down forever. Feel free to pass the news on.
