Upon hearing of Dragoneers death I had a lot of mixed emotions; Sadness, for one, on the way in which he went (assumably, as I don’t know all the details). Fear, because he went so young and from something possibly avoidable. Anger, because our healthcare system is truly awful and something I know better than most having dealt with and deal with regularity. And resignation, because we all go and life will march on.

I had very few dealings with him, some not great, but I never held any animosity towards him. It was clear he put this site before his health and life, and sometimes I wish he hadn’t: because as much as this site means to everyone, me included, it wasn’t worth his life.

The one big take away I can say everyone should learn from this: Get looked at, get regular checkups, listen to your body. The US healthcare system is a nightmare, yes, but there are ways to get help - go in, even if to the ER, and get looked at. The bills may be insane, but you’ll be alive and can then look for ways to mitigate that. I am only alive because I learned how to advocate for myself, and to say a big “fuck you” to hospital bills. Those bills are scary, debt is scary, but your life is priceless and there are ways around it. Programs that WILL help you, I promise you that.

Site wise: Chill and let the staff figure things out, don’t go nuts trying to archive and act as if the site going to disappear - I wager with this community behind it we’ll find a way to keep it going. I know there’s a post going around making people panic, try not to listen to the hyperbole. It’s never bad to have other places to be found, but don’t flock away from this place because the owner passed, or act as if it’s going to die with him; it won’t.

Again; please listen to your bodies and go in before something’s too far along to be helped. There is so much that can be avoided, and no one deserves to pass the way he did. Hope he rests in peace, and knows we’ll keep this community going no matter what
