So... recently, an artist I followed decided to leave the community, and set his profile to private. I won't name names or list his reasons (or my thoughts on his reasons) here- if you followed him, he wrote a journal about it before leaving, and if you didn't, well... when someone sets themselves to private, they generally want privacy. Suffice it to say, his art and characters were adorable and I miss him already.

However... there's a problem with what he did. Not with his choice to do it, but how he did it. You see, all he did was flip a switch- he set his account to private, and nothing else. You'd think that'd be enough, right? It'd completely hide the account from the outside world, preventing others from seeing the account's gallery, the account's journals, the account's comments, et cetera. Well... it does most of that. The journals, comments, the profile page itself, the gallery page, all of that are hidden from view. But while the art is indeed removed from search results... it's still visible, should you have the link.

If someone were to obtain a link to one of the artist's pics, from any source- anything from the source of an image posted to e621, to another artist innocently linking to said pic for any number of reasons, like "This is a commission/gift/whatever by (insert name here), go to the pic's post on their account to show some love!" or "This is my half of an art trade with (insert name here), their half of the trade is over here!", if any pic has its link saved for posterity in any location ever, then the FA post can still be seen even after the account's made private. And what's worse- from there, one can (slowly) browse through the private account's entire gallery- while they can't actually go to the gallery page as it's blocked from view, the row of thumbnails under the image proper is still visible and accessible, and will link you to all of the other art on the account without issue. (Granted, however, one can't use a normal image to view the Scrap gallery, or a Scrap to view the normal gallery.)

Thus, I have two pieces of advice. One for those seeking to make their accounts private, and one for everyone else.

For those seeking privacy, try to scour the Internet for any links to your FA account prior to flipping the switch. And if all else fails, and you really want to be hidden... make backups of all of your art if you don't have it already, and then delete all of the art in your gallery. This will ensure that future archaeologists won't be able to dig up your hidden art.

And for all others? If someone does decide to hide away from the world, and you gave a link to their art somewhere, please, take the link down. They want privacy now- and if you cared enough about them to link to them and steer traffic over to them when they were public, the least you can do now is respect their wishes, and prevent unwanted traffic.
