Commissioning Terms of Service (Jul 2020)
Posted 5 years agoHiya!
So, you have decided that you want to commission me! S'all good, I'm down!
For the sake of clarity and making things easier for the both of us, and for the sake of maintaining SOME air of professionalism here, I feel it might be necessary to create a formal list of terms and conditions for commissioning me.
1. Payment - Payment for commissions will be handled through PayPal, with an invoice either sent to your email address or via a link to their site. While tipping is enabled, it's not mandatory but nonetheless greatly appreciated. While I appreciate any offers of trading one good or service for another - such as offering to pay for art with a game code on Steam, GOG, the Epic Game Store, etc. - I will pretty much always have to turn this down, sorry!
2. Work Timing and Completion - Work on a commission will begin after I receive payment through PayPal, rather than before. I have been lenient with this in the past and had a policy of not taking payment until I've made a time investment; and while people have been good about paying after receiving a rough draft, I have had one or two instances where my enthusiasm to work on a project has bit me in the butt, with radio silence and/or no payment from the customer. It was easier to shrug it off because it had been a side hustle, but since I'm trying to convert this into a full-time job, I kind of have to put my foot down in this regard! Additionally, I generally try to keep a queue going at all times. As such, it may take a little time for the completed piece to be sent to you, but I work on multiple pieces at once and will always send out a draft of the commission as soon as possible.
3. When commissioning me, please be ready to pay at or around the time of sending the invoice. If you have to decline going through with it, I totally understand, but it is nonetheless a bit of a pain in the butt. If you need time to get the payment together, I can try and work with you on it - but realize that doing so kind of puts the commission on the backburner. Similarly, when I specifically solicit for commissions, while I totally get the want to post "Well, I'd commission you, but I don't have the money right now," I can't recommend doing so as I can't exactly keep track of those who want to do so at a later date. ^^;
4. References - I am willing to work with text-based references for characters; however, whenever possible, I'd also appreciate any visual refs you may have for a piece as well! Figure, outfit ideas, pose ideas, and such. The more you can flesh out the important bits of a picture, the better. It helps keep things from getting a bit too messy regarding my interpretation versus yours!
5. Edits and Revisions - I've haven't had to make a fuss about this, but, when I send out a rough draft of your commission, let me know whether or not things need to be changed then. Minor details - touching up bits here and there, adjusting the color of fur slightly, and so on - generally aren't too big a deal, but if you need me to make changes to the character's figure or pose, let me know ASAP before I go into the inking or coloring phase. I can do maybe 2 or 3 medium edits or 1 major edit to a picture in the draft phase; if things still aren't looking quite right, let me know and we can work something out in terms of compensation for any extra time needed on a picture.
6. Reproduction of art - In almost every case, any art I complete on commission is for personal use. As long as you give proper attribution to the work provided, you are free to post it on social media, art sites, etc.; and make personal prints as well - I make sure to include the original resolution file for this purpose. As the art's creator, unless asked otherwise, I also reserve the right to post commissioned works publicly on social media (Twitter, Tumblr, Pillowfort, etc.) and my art sites/portfolios. If you wish for it to be a private commission not to be posted online by either party, please inform me ahead of time. Additionally, if you intend to use my art for any business purposes - be it non-profit or for-profit - please let me know so that we can negotiate terms that are mutually beneficial.
7. Pricing - The prices in my commission sheet (refer here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/43435762/ ) are for a single character with a solid color or gradient BG. This can... probably be chalked up to my lack of experience with fitting such info onto a sheet! In most cases, this pricing will work for what you ask for! But if you are wanting any extra details out of the ordinary (complex fur patterns, more complex backgrounds, etc.) let me know at the time of commissioning so we can work out a fair price for the piece. Additionally, if you want 3 or more characters in a piece, let me know so that we can negotiate either a fair price for the work required and/or a fair method of portioning out payments in installments, if needed.
8. Split commissions - I will take split commissions, but the previously mentioned payment policy still applies! More than with single-payment commissions, please make sure both payments are ready to go as close together as possible.
9. Comics - given the complexity of laying out a comic book page, I generally will not take these. Sequences meant to convey a story, however, are fine!
10. I reserve the right to decline service if I am uncomfortable with the content of a commission proposal. As I mentioned in the price sheet, if you're not sure if an idea is doable, just ask. This applies both to content as well as inking/coloring methods that may not be listed in my price sheet!
As always, thank you in advance for your business! 🙇♀️

Comm updates, Comms still open, and incoming price change...
Posted 5 years agoHeya!
So I've mostly whittled down my commission queue with pretty much everything here just waiting on ink/color. I'm hoping to get them done within the next week or so, barring the one anonymous commission.
Having said all that, I hate to do this - but, essentially, since late April, art has been my full-time job, rather than a side job. It's been a year or two since my last price change, but in light of the fact that I have to make ends meet with commissions, I'm going to need to increase my prices. If you've already commissioned me, this isn't a call to hit you up for anything extra - but, effective July 14, I'll be changing my prices up, generally a 50% increase from my current prices.
So, essentially:
Sketches: $10/character -> $15
Lineart: $20/character -> $30
Flats: $30/character -> $45
Simple shading: $45/character -> $55
Blended shading: $50/character -> $70
Since I'm giving it a few days, I'm also (again) taking commissions to keep my plate full - both figuratively and literally. :V If you're interested in commissioning me at my current prices before 7/14, feel free to DM me on Twitter (Sofia_Ciel), message me on Discord (maikeru#0401), or comment and send me a note here.

#BLM and Hand-Wringing About Protesters
Posted 5 years agoStraight up - how many times do people have to get beaten, or thrown in jail, or killed for no reason before we go, "hey, this is screwed up?"
I try to keep my politics off of FA and my furry twitter account (though i guess if you look deeply thru my likes and replies, you'll find 'em). I've always been worried that someone would try and start an argument with me over it when I don't want it. But nah, wanting the police not to profile, not to maintain a lower level of respect, not to kill people who have done nothing wrong - or people who have committed such minor crimes as selling cigarettes - seems like a pretty obvious stance to take, no?
Yes, I'm aware that among the protesters are rioters in many of the larger demonstrations. Yes, I'm aware some of the people making trouble are out there with an agenda in place - far-left and far-right 'disaster tourists' out to break shit for fun; local and federal government spooks; people who don't *care* about the politics of the situation but want to get away with breaking property. I hate to say it, because I'm someone who prefers my violence to be staged and consensual, like in pro wrestling... But when voices are ignored, or silenced, no matter how peaceful they try to be, eventually something breaks. Eventually the aggrieved feel that, if their voices are going to be snuffed out by calls of decorum and patience, no matter how polite and patient they've been in their calls for change, then the last resort is to go loud, to get aggressive.
Based on what happened during the class-driven Occupy Wall Street protests 10 years ago, just off the top of my head, it doesn't matter if you are peaceful and compliant to the best of your abilities - the police will use force, fire tear gas to disperse, line up the protesters and mace them en masse, or worse. With this protest in particular, it lays bare the barbarism encouraged by the heads of police and heads of government, even in supposedly liberal areas like NYC and LA. Not only are peaceful protesters being targeted, but also the press, as evident by the reports of news reporters and cameramen being thrown in holding cells and temporary prisons packed densely with warm bodies, hit with batons and riot shields, or shot with rubber rounds at a close enough range to maim them, cause permanent damage to their bodies. They feign solidarity to drop people's guard. They find people doing *nothing*, showing *no* sign of resistance or aggression, and open fire. They drive SUVs into the sidewalk like they're one of the tiki torch-bearer dudes from Charlottesville.
Here's the thing about the acceptability of what counts as a good or bad protest... Sometimes something has to give in order to organize and start bringing us closer to real reform. Did you know that the modern LGBT rights movement came about because of the Stonewall Riots about 50 years ago? It took righteous anger, broken windows, and public property being trashed to force the LGBT community in the 1970s to finally organize and create safe spaces for marginalized groups in every major city across the US. It took *riots,* in response to police brutality, a history of oppression, criminalizing homosexuality, and discrimination; to spark the fire that got many of us in this fandom to a point where we don't have to worry about going to jail for expressing ourselves - sometimes in the privacy of our own homes, as Lawrence v. Texas demonstrated.

Commission Update - April 2020
Posted 5 years agoSorry for the delay in finishing any outstanding commissions.
After getting a good rhythm going 2 weeks ago, I was sidelined with what I thought was a simple boil or something.
Instead it got further infected, and as I'm typing this, I'm stuck in the hospital after requiring surgery.
In the process, I found out that I have diabetes, which is ... just great.
I expect that I'll be hospitalized for another 2-4 days, so until April 2-4 or so. After that, I'll get back to work once I'm home.
Because of this diagnosis, I might also have to take more of a workload, especially if I cannot get my Medicaid renewed. Insulin is pricy, yo.

Commission update
Posted 5 years agoIt took longer than I wanted - as it turns out, trying to pump out commissions when you're working the holidays in retail is kind of tough - but my commission queue has been cleared since about the 14th of this month. I have a couple of ideas in the works right now as well, so I will hold off on any further commission opening announcements until I feel like I've made progress on the new requests.
Also, given that FA was hit by a DDOS - while I'll still take commissions by notes, I nonetheless recommend that you keep in touch with me through other outlets.
My art twitter is Sofia_Ciel and my DMs are open on it, even if you are not currently following me.
I have a Telegram that I set up fairly recently as well - the name there is also Sofia_Ciel. I'm trying to keep an eye on it when people message me but if I'm at work I'll be somewhat slow to respond!
Last, yet again, I'm thinking of raising my prices a tad. Insert picture of Bernie once again asking for your support here. Any suggestions for an ideal price level would be appreciated!

The monthly(?) commission bugging post!
Posted 6 years agoHeya!
I'm apparently really trying to make this into more of a full-time job, so! I'm looking to take a few commissions to do around the end of the month, while also juggling my retail day job!
Rates are the same as before (though I may adjust them again starting in 2020). Please refer to my Commission Info tab for examples of my work and the rates I charge. c:
If interested, comment, drop a note, or DM me on Twitter Sofia_Ciel! :D

Side hustle must become the main hustle again. Comms open!
Posted 6 years agoI've cleared out my queue just in time to see that a.) my hours at work are pretty sucky and b.) rent, my car note, and my internet bill are coming up soon. So I'm gonna try and get the cash to cover that alongside my meager part-time hours. :V
I'm open for anything but I'm thinking of focusing on line art in particular this time. $10 for something sketchier and $20 for something inked up!
Note me here, or on Twittet if you prefer: http://www.twitter.com/Sofia_Ciel
you can also reach me @maikeru#0401 on Discord!

Time for bills! And time for commissions.
Posted 6 years agoHeya,
It's getting near the start of the month, which means I have to pay for my car loan, phone, and internet - so, I'm going to put out another request for some commissions!
As usual, I haven't gotten a visual pricing reference sheet done (though that gives me an idea for later!) so please refer to my Commission Info tab for pricing and examples of the work I do. ^^
If interested, feel free to comment, send me a note, or reach out to me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/sofia_ciel

✨ Open for commissions ✨ to pay for my bills!
Posted 6 years agoHeya! I got my queue cleaned out for the most part, and I'm looking to take a few commissions to keep myself afloat and cover for my insurance payment, in part or in full - about $150 for the full amount.
I'm off Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday so I'll try and focus my time on working on art on those days, if I'm not in a mood for art after a shift on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday.
Commission prices are in my info tab but for the sake of saving you that extra click:
- Sketched lineart is $10
- Inked Lineart is $20
- Colored sketches go from $20 (flats) to $45 (full blended shading)
- Colored artwork goes from $30 (flats) to $50 (full, blended shading).
In any case, feel free to note me or DM me on Twitter Sofia_Ciel!

Posted 6 years agoHeya,
Looks like my hours at work were cut! So, it's time for me to take a few commissions I guess.
Prices are in the "Commission Info" tab and vary from $20 for lineart alone to $50 for a fully colored picture, all for a single character.
If you're interested, feel free to slide into my DMs or comment on this journal!
Thanks~!

Posted 6 years agoMm, I still have yet to really launch or plug my ko-fi, nor to set up a patreon tipjar, so for now I'm going to give the shiny system a shot as a way of tipping.
I admittedly have sliiiight reservations about this system, because lol FA implementing new features without them melting down like Chernobyl, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm guessing quite a few of you discovered my FA through my posts following Tumblr's guideline changes involving ~real life female-presenting nipples~. Oh, and managing to come up with the excellent optics of shadowbanning references to NSFW, boobs, and butts, while doing nothing about the ability to search for posts tagged with "white nationalism" and "national socialism." And for that, I wanna thank you for making the trek from one broken-ass website to another! :D

commission changes effective Jan. 2019!
Posted 7 years agoehhh i might as well do this!
Please note - this does not apply to anyone who is currently awaiting completion of a commission in my queue.
Effective January 2019, I'll be changing the prices on my commissions, and essentially treating this less as a hobby/pastime and more of a second part-time job. I went ahead and changed the prices on my oft-neglected "Commission Info" tab on my FA profile to reflect this. I'll try and stay open to negotiation though, so. I also added some other categories of digital art using a brush or pencil tool, and priced them accordingly.
At any rate, my old prices will still be available until then. For a single character, those are:
Lineart: $10
Flats: $20
Block shading: $25
Smoothed shading: $30
If you're interested in commissioning me before the end of the year, please feel free to comment and/or PM me. You can also DM me on tumblr (http://sofia-ciel.tumblr.com) or on twitter (http://www.twitter.com/Sofia_Ciel)!

Posted 7 years agowelp, there's one less platform on which for me to vacillate on trying to make money off of my art
On commissions and making ends meet
Posted 7 years agoOkay, so, this is kind of a come-to-Jesus moment for me or something, but.
Basically, for about the past... 8, 9 years? I've charged the same amount for my art. That's both what I felt my art was worth and how much I thought people would be willing to pay.
It was also what I was charging at a time when I was merely treating art as a diversion. To some degree, I still have been treating it that way, but I'm at a point where I would like to make it less of a hobby that gives me pocket change on occasion and more of a part- or full-time job.
I'm not going to make any immediate changes, and it also doesn't apply to anyone who has already come to me asking for a commission ... But eventually, I am probably going to have to consider raising prices.
What I'd like to know is what YOU think my art should be worth on average by looking at it -- it's something I haven't given thought to heavily.

Commission update (lineart queue clear)
Posted 7 years agoWhoops, that quickie set took... longer than expected. The anxiety-depression tag team is kind of a pair of assholes!
At any rate, I cleared that queue, and added a couple of full projects that I've been noted/e-mailed about. If you're at all interested in some lineart-y or experimental things for $10 or so a pop, feel free to hit me up!

Out to make a QUICK BUCK ... with art! (commissions open)
Posted 7 years agooutside of one pic, my commission queue is pretty empty.
Was thinking about doing some $10 quickies! Line art only. Any takers are more than welcome!

Also, I made a twitter.
Posted 7 years agoUnlike the ko-fi, I'm not gonna bother with anything fancy for this (...though, knowing me, I'm not going to bother with anything fancy for the ko-fi profile either).
I got tired of not being able to be horny on main so here, a twitter for posting my art whenever I feel like it, also for reblogging cute arts I come across!
Feel free to hmu @ http://www.twitter.com/Sofia_Ciel

I made a ko-fi.
Posted 7 years agoI wanted to wait until I could do a silly picture to go with it, but:
As the journal title says, I started a ko-fi in case anyone wants to support or tip me.
The link is here: https://ko-fi.com/sofiaciel
I might also use it as a means of doing quickie busts or thigh-up rough sketches every now and then -- I'm not sure!
