On artistic idols defiling their legacy (cw: pedophilia)
Posted 8 years agoSo, if you look at my long dormant profile info, you'll see that my favorite artist list includes Macross character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, and also Rurouni Kenshin author Nobuhiro Watsuki. Back when I was pretending that Sofia isn't my personal character/persona/fursona or whatever, my FA avatar was an imitation of Kenshin going "Oro?" from an early chapter of the Manga.
.... Well, I don't know how to feel about Watsuki now. As it turns out, his home and office were raided by Japanese police. He had a large collection of video tapes and DVDs of child pornography. And it's not like they were old shames - some of those DVDs were purchased LAST MONTH. It disgusts me. In light of the issues with actors, directors, and politicians harassing women, kissing, groping, etc. without consent, the fact that one of my favorite mangaka of all time has gone one step further and fetishized the exploitation of children is a cherry on top of a situation that has resulted in many people I admired turning out to be, if not outright terrible people, then poorly flawed individuals whom I cannot and will not show sympathy to. It guts me. I cannot look at Kenshin, Busou Renkin, etc. in the same light as I did before.

I think I'm back now.
Posted 8 years agoAssuming my internet doesn't go down for hours at a time anymore. No promises tho -- I know my ISP is still working on restoring service all over town.

Harvey the Wonder Hurricane update
Posted 8 years agoI'm not quite back yet... I got power last night, but besides the damage to the electric grid here, it looks like the utility poles might have been providing cable to my neighborhood, so my internet is down for now.
I'll try and be back to continue procrastinating and being wracked by my own indecision as soon as possible tho!

here it is, rocking me like a hurricane
Posted 8 years agoA heads-up -- I'm probably gonna be extra-incognito for the next few days. I'm on the north side of Hurricane Harvey, which means I'm fixing to be utterly slammed by wind and especially a shit-ton of rain. Hopefully the power stays on, in which case I can at least work on whittling down my art queue a bit. If not, I'll try and keep in touch with those who know me super-well.
Commissions?
Posted 8 years agoSo, with my hours at work being less than amazing, and some other personal life stuff -- I'm the only person working, in particular -- I could probably use some more money. I'm looking to try and cover the extra cost of utilities monthly, which is about $200.
So, I'm going to re-open myself for commissions. It's an older image, but here are my prices:

Price adjustment and commission policy change
Posted 9 years agoSo, for a while now, I've been letting commissioners use either the personal payment or the goods and services tag for PayPal transactions. I haven't had any issues with people reneging on the agreement and getting a refund on the service rendered but still.
From what I understand, PayPal is eliminating a microtransaction category in October and requiring artists to switch to an invoice system in order to limit their own liability. So, with that in mind, I suppose I should transition to that as a means of rendering payment.
So basically, once I have an agreement on a sketch or anything like that, I'll need to invoice you for the final piece; and once it's paid, I'll complete it. Which honestly isn't much different from how I did this before, save that it'll be a more formalized agreement for the benefit of both myself and you--a proper invoice is more clear than a note or an IM through Skype and, god forbid I flake out, I'd rather have it in writing like this.
The only change will be to lineart, from $10.00 to $11.00.
edit: on second thought, I'm only changing one price for now.

So, a status update. (srs bsns post)
Posted 9 years agoAs one may have noticed, I've been fairly quiet on here for a month or two.
There were a few reasons for this.
First, my work load at my day job took a sudden upward spike due to summer vacation, and all sorts of kids needing cheap junkfood to fill them up. So we had a pretty good amount of business.
About the time when it slowed down, and I was thinking of getting back to work, life decided to take a big old dump on me.
My mom had been complaining about her feet swelling. Although I was a bit worried about it, I didn't push the issue too far, at least until a recent photo of her was posted on facebook and her family began asking me questions about her health.
I went ahead and kinda pushed and prodded her into seeing a doctor, thinking that, worst case scenario, it was a liver issue brought on by alcohol use over a long period of time or something.
It wasn't.
It was cancer.
Stage 4.
Starting in the lungs and metastasizing to her liver, and eventually potentially her brain.
That's a lot to fucking take in all at once. At the time of the diagnosis, she was quite weak and not all that cognizant of her surroundings; but thanks to an emergency boost to her nutrients and some medication, she was beginning to recover a bit. I felt some degree of hope that she'd be able to enjoy what time she had left.
But, you know, life has a great way of fucking with you and reminding you that for every up, there can be a down; and there were a series of serious downs over the course of the last few days.
After radiation therapy, she and her partner spoke with the oncologist, who told her she had lost too much weight for them to start chemo. Our goal, then, was to get her weight back up.
But her appetite was fading.
And then her consciousness, too; for the last four days, she was basically locked into her own mind, unable to recognize the world around her.
I had gotten out of the bath this afternoon only to get an urgent response from her partner. Something was going horribly wrong.
From there, it was a blur. EMTs came into our house to intubate and try and kickstart her. They took her to the ER. A doctor told us that the chances of recovery are grim, and urged us to consider taking out the tube they had just put in.
We had no choice. Seeing her like that made it clear that there was no chance for a comfortable life.
She passed away about 30 minutes later, before they could even situate her in a more comfortable room.
What was supposed to be a chance to settle accounts and possibly fulfill life wishes turned into her dying exactly a month after the oncologist told her what was wrong.
Robbed of any chance to say goodbye to her family, and for any of us to say goodbye to her.
How am I supposed to feel about this? I cried until I was sick. And now I just feel numb. I'm hoping that writing out this post will help a bit.
Anyway.
If I have been conspicuously absent, there's why. If I continue to be absent, there's why too. I need a little time to cope with this. And then I need to put my mind to this second job a bit more fully. Right now, it's just her life partner and I; and I am already going to be losing some hours at work. If my employer is cool, they'll give me some bereavement time. If not, welp.

Random Game Thought
Posted 9 years agoNot so much a thought as it is an imperative command...
Buy VA-11 Hall-A, like, now, especially if you like VN's/interactive fiction.
It takes place in your standard dystopian, cyberpunk future, but unlike other cyberpunk games in which you're fighting against the system and/or addicted to all the drugs, you're an ordinary joe living in this futuristic, oligarchic city as a bartender, and the plot itself is a pleasant slice-of-life thing where the setting serves as a jumping point for your patrons' personal lives.
In a way, it has some similarities to Papers, Please, in that the gameplay serves less as a means of, like, having fun, and more as a way of delivering the running plot to the player. Unlike that game, though, you don't really have to deal with the crushing bureaucracy of a totalitarian state adding more and more rules to a monotonous job; it's a much more leisurely affair. You still have to do what you can to make ends meet, but it doesn't feel even nearly as stressful in its simulation of a daily grind.
The music is bright and jangly synthwave and is all pretty awesome; and the visuals call back to the style of character art seen in early 90s PC games on the PC-98 and whatnot, making great use of a small palette of colors per character.
It's like 15 bucks now, and you can get it either on steam or from itch.io. If you do the latter, it should come with a copy of the Prologue chapter, which offers up a little bit of backstory that is referenced in the main game.

A status update
Posted 9 years agoMostly to get the previous one off of my front page. :P
Everything is going reasonably fine now, or at least is back to the previous status quo. I have a working desktop computer now, so I can actually work on art again (as evident from the fact that I actually uploaded a thing or two).
I'll be trying to clear out my current queue soon, barring any "fun" stretches at work that would limit my free time and/or my woefully short attention span being distracted by vidya.

When it rains, it pours
Posted 9 years agoSorry for the lack of communication. Was working on sketch commissions and my art trade between actually decent work weeks and playing a particular waifu simulator on PC when my desktop's motherboard finally died after a power outage.
And then my laptop finally died after being held together by chewing gum and twine for years.
I was able to replace them only because I charged them to credit lines.
I'm gonna try and work on the sketches right now, though the laptop setup is fairly cumbersome and it doesn't seem like the system would be able to handle much in the way of heavy duty image editing. What's worse is I had one complete that I won't have access to until I spend money on a SATA enclosure... Poop.
EDIT: I'm getting the SATA enclosure soonish. Dunno if this computer has the muscle to do any color artwork quite yet but I will certainly try!

$10 commissions, yet again.
Posted 9 years agoWelp, I'm forever strugglin', so I'm gonna go ahead and open up for lineart/sketch commissions to try and bang out this week.
I'll start with 3 to go with the one that has been sitting on the sidelines for those couple of weeks where I actually was getting okay hours at work. :p

$10 Lineart Commishes - 4 slots
Posted 9 years agoStill working on color things now that my hours are back to somewhere around 'none,' and while I do that I'm going ahead and adding a little to my light workload -- lineart-only art for $10. Four slots initially, but if I get enough requests or if I can get them done quickly, I'll open up for more. Feel free to refer to my scraps folder for an idea of what I mean!

Arrrrrrt
Posted 10 years agoSo I suppose the hourly situation at work is gonna be the new normal.
In light of that, I could use some money drawing fuzzy thangs.
I'm on my phone and too lazy to copy-paste my rate sheet (also, I need to revise it sooner or later) but basically, lineart is $10 per character; colors are $20 (flats) to $30 (blended shading) for the first character. Comment like and subscri... I mean comment, note, or email me at the Addy on the rate sheet if you're interested!

yet another round of commission begging
Posted 10 years agoYo!
So, I apparently have a lot of free time on my hands next week, and a real need to get myself back into the swing of arting. So yeah I guess I will be doing some more commissions!
I'm looking to take 3 or 4 sketches, and a full commission or two. I recently decided to up my prices just a bit, but I am open to negotiation :V
Any info (and little thumbnail examples) can be found here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17781750/
Comment, note, and/or email me @ my newly christened commission-only email account for any business inquiries and questions about stuff I didn't really cover there. The main thing you might wanna ask about is icons and/or design sheets because I kind of forgot to list them (AND I have no idea how tf to price those).

Commish update!
Posted 10 years agoDone with the sketches... far later than I expected to be. ._.; Depression is a hell of a thing, as is my short attention span.
In the meantime, I may be asking for another round of sketches/lineart only commissions, as this coming week is another one where I got very few hours at work. Stay tuned for further details beyond this:
4-5 slots (again), $15 a piece!
Meanwhile, I went ahead and updated my journal footer to reflect any full commissions I now have.

With that out of the way...
Looking to take a couple of quick commissions while I work (slowly) on other commissions -- had to take a cut in hours at work this week, but since it gave me a three day weekend, I have some free time and I'd rather not accidentally spend it all playing vidya. >_> So yeah, I was thinking a few quick sketches, $10-15 each. A word of warning to artists and commissioners
Posted 10 years agoReposting this from my tumblr dashboard:
EVERYONE needs to start using Invoices. This is very important.
Paypal has recently updated their TOS and it’s something that everyone should pay attention to.
“10.3h If you violate the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, … you will be liable to PayPal for the amount of PayPal’s damages caused by your violation … You acknowledge and agree that $2,500.00 USD per violation … is presently a reasonable minimum estimate of PayPal’s actual damages … PayPal may deduct such damages directly from any existing Balance in the offending Account or any other Account you control.”
DO NOT SEND PAYMENTS AS “GIFTS” You will be risking your commissioners account and that is really really bad.
Artists, REQUEST PAYMENT THROUGH INVOICES. It lets YOU control how money is sent.
Commissioners, DO NOT SEND PAYMENT unless you send it through “for goods and services.” If your artist requests ‘send as gifts’ BEFORE you send payment, tell them about the $2,500 fine per violation, as they probably do not know about it.
Yes, paypal fees suck, but it’s better to have a few dollars missing than to get fined $2,500 for a $20 purchase.
---
I've had people send me money as gifts before. Don't do this if you commission me. If need be, I'll adjust the price to factor in their fee for services rendered, but, in any case, if I'm not invoicing you (and I really should,
bjkgreywolf is getting me into this habit kek), send the money as payment for goods or services. This also helps me to report my furry art as taxable income and keeps the IRS from getting mad over the couple hundred dollars or so I make a year off of drawing for money and not for hobbyist purposes. :V
