<Politics> Dear Celebrities: No One Cares What You Think
Posted 7 years ago<Politics> Gun Control Then and Now. What's Different?
Posted 7 years agoQ: Would stricter gun control laws have prevented recent mass shootings in America (Newtown, Purdue, etc.)? Which laws would have made a difference?
Lets take a look at gun control and gun violence over the past 30 years and then make an informed decision.
Here is a litmus test.
- Do you think mass shootings have increased over the past 30 years?
- Do you think there are more school shootings now then there were 30 years ago?
- Do you believe that having guns could reduce violent crime?
- Do you think more US households have guns now than than 30 years ago?
- Is it more difficult to purchase a gun now than it was 30 years ago?
- Do you think we have more gun laws or gun control now then 30 years ago?
Lets see see how you did.
- Yes, astronomically.
- Absolutely. Way more.
- This has been proven true in the United States
- No. There are less homes with guns now.
- Way more difficult.
- We have hundreds of new gun laws now.
So do gun control laws work to reduce crime and reduce mass shootings? You be the judge.
School shootings 5 year averages.
- 30 years ago, 3.8 per year (1985–1990)
- Now, 22 shootings per year. (2012–2017)
Percent of households in the U.S. with guns.
- 1985–1990 45.5% of households owned guns
- 2012–2017 40.4% of households owned guns
Gun laws now and 30 years ago.
- No background checks were conducted 30 years ago. Started in 1993, fully implemented in 1998
- Gun free zones did not exist 30 years ago
- Age restrictions on purchase and possession of guns did not exist 30 years ago.
- Restrictions on the sale of guns to mentally ill or domestic violence convictions did not exist 30 years ago.
So do gun laws work?
Our number of school shootings and mass shootings have increased all while more gun laws have been passed.
Maybe it’s time to ask some different questions.
- What has caused these spikes in numbers?
- What can we do as a society to protect our children?
- Could it even be possible that because of fewer homes having guns that this has caused less knowledge about gun safety and therefore caused more shootings?
It is time for everyone to know the truth and to take the bullshit spin out of this. People are dying everyday and we are playing politics.
Education and accountability are key. As a nation we will never get rid of guns and we will never end gun crime, but through education and accountability maybe we can lower the numbers. I will agree that no murders is the only acceptable number, but this is impossible to achieve, without guns people still find ways to kill each other.
Banning all guns in the United States will just cause the import of illegal guns to come across our southern border by the millions.
Here are a few ideas I have.
- Standardized gun education
- Strict enforcement of laws we already have.
- Completely lock down on our schools, make the only access through the front door and all visitors would have to be escorted in.
- Allow teachers and administrators who are trained to carry concealed guns in schools.
- Metal detectors at the entry of all schools.
- More school resource officers.
The U.S. had a much higher “gun culture” 30 years ago but for some reason, now our schools are getting shot up and our children are being killed. Please let’s ask a new question. That is the only way this gets fixed.
The interesting part of all of this is that violent crime and gun crime are actually down in the United States. So this means as a nation we really do not have a huge problem like the media would like you to believe. We have several extremely sick people in our country that need help.

<Politics> Liberty
Posted 7 years agoI saw this question asked recently and it's worth following up upon and sharing:
Q: How would American citizens react to seeing the constitution abolished and burned with a far more oppressive one taking its place?
A: Liberty is defended by four boxes.
- The Soapbox
- The Ballot Box
- The Jury Box
- The Cartridge Box
In this case, skip directly to box four.
Can a Citizen Militia resist the Tyranny of the State? Yes - see 1776.

<Politics> Gun Control laws and Reality
Posted 7 years agoGunControl: "It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." - MacBeth
There is a principle inspired by an old joke:
Streetlight effect
A policeman sees a drunk man searching for something under a streetlight and asks what the drunk has lost. He says he lost his keys and they both look under the streetlight together. After a few minutes the policeman asks if he is sure he lost them here, and the drunk replies, no, and that he lost them in the park. The policeman asks why he is searching here, and the drunk replies, "this is where the light is".
Our gun control laws are a pretty good example of this. We keep passing laws imposing restrictions on the law-abiding, because when we do they obey them. The problem is that the crimes are being committed by criminals, who do not, by definition, obey them.
Don Kates described it here:
Guns And Public Health: Epidemic Of Violence Or Pandemic Of Propaganda?
Scholars engaged in serious criminological research into "gun control" have found themselves forced, often very reluctantly, into four largely negative propositions. First, there is no persuasive evidence that gun ownership causes ordinary, responsible, law abiding adults to murder or engage in any other criminal behavior--though guns can facilitate crime by those who were independently inclined toward it. Second, the value of firearms in defending victims has been greatly underestimated. Third, gun controls are innately very difficult to enforce.
The difficulty of enforcement crucially undercuts the violence-reductive potential of gun laws. Unfortunately, an almost perfect inverse correlation exists between those who are affected by gun laws, particularly bans, and those whom enforcement should affect. Those easiest to disarm are the responsible and law abiding citizens whose guns represent no meaningful social problem. Irresponsible and criminal owners, whose gun possession creates or exacerbates so many social ills, are the ones most difficult to disarm. A leading English analyst's pessimistic view has been summarized as follows: "In any society the number of guns always suffices to arm the few who want to obtain and use them illegally ...."
Therefore, the fourth conclusion criminological research and analysis forces on scholars is that while controls carefully targeted only at the criminal and irresponsible have a place in crime-reduction strategy, the capacity of any type of gun law to reduce dangerous behavior can never be more than marginal.
Let me emphasize:
An almost perfect inverse correlation exists between those who are affected by gun laws, particularly bans, and those whom enforcement should affect. Those easiest to disarm are the responsible and law abiding citizens whose guns represent no meaningful social problem. Irresponsible and criminal owners, whose gun possession creates or exacerbates so many social ills, are the ones most difficult to disarm.
We keep passing laws that impact the people who are not a part of the problem, and expect things to change.
It’s beyond stupid.
(Credit: http://qr.ae/TU8Dnn )
It's time to stop treating some of our most Law-Abiding and Responsible citizens in the country as Second Class Citizens and start actually looking at the root causes of issues . Guns are not the problem. The NRA is not the problem. Every-day law-abiding citizens are NOT the problem.
84,999,989 Gun Owners killed -NO- one yesterday.
There have not been 18 'schools shootings' this year unless you deliberately and extremely twist the meanings of 'school and 'shooting' well beyond their accepted terms and have a political agenda and axe to grind.
There are over 300 MILLION guns in America at least. You cannot just 'ban' them, nor Confiscate them without violating not only the 2nd Amendment, but the 5th and quite probably the 14th Amendments as well in the process.
Gun violence is the lowest it's been in several decades - look it up. At this point, it's a rounding error and a statistical anomaly when it does occur. Flashy and makes news, but exceedingly rare - despite some of the largest increases in Gun Ownership in the US.
You cannot buy a gun without a background check from a dealer or from a gunshow. Give that rhetoric up - it's not reality.
There is no 'Gun Show Loophole'.
'Assault Weapons' are not a thing. It's a made up term that is mostly concerned with cosmetic features, not actual function of a firearm. It doesn't help and hasn't helped. The 90's 'Assault Weapon Ban' accomplished exactly ZERO. Nothing. Nada.
We don't have a 'gun' problem, we have a 'Crime' problem. Since the overwhelming majority of such crimes are committed by gangs, we have a 'Gang' problem, quite possibly linked in with a 'Drug' problem. Homicides are down significantly across the board. We also have a 'Mental Health' issue in the US that needs addressing. We even have a 'suicide' issue that needs addressing. A firearm may facilitate some of these when they're used improperly, but they are NOT the root cause of the issues involved.
Blaming an inanimate object for the actions of an individual is idiotic. Quite frankly holding me, or the NRA responsible for the actions of an individual over 2000 miles away across the damned country is moronic. Start WORKING with the NRA and us Law Abiding Citizens towards looking for solutions to the REAL underlying societal issues and you'll find alot more support than this nonsense and perhaps some actual progress towards solving them.
Pushing this rhetoric of Gun Control guarantees no solutions will be found and you'll just make many folk who might be interested in helping you find REAL solutions irritated and refuse to help you.

<Politics> Gun Control Facts You'll Never Hear
Posted 9 years agoGun Control Facts You'll Never Hear
By Stephen Lendman
7-12-16
Very Interesting facts about gun control - which are NEVER discussed by media ...
There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms. That is not disputed.
What is never shown, though, is a breakdown of those deaths to put them in perspective, as compared to other causes of death.
• 65% of those deaths are by suicide, which would never be prevented by gun laws
• 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and mostly justified
• 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons
• 3% are accidental discharge deaths
So technically, "gun violence" is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100 (0.17 x 30,000).
Still too many? Well, first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation?
• 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago
• 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore
• 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit
• 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington DC (a 54% increase over prior years)
So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause.
This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation or about 75 per state. That is an average because some states have much higher rates than others.
For example, California had 1,169 and Alabama had 1.
Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California, of course, but understand, it is not the tool (guns) driving this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So, if all cities and states are not created equal, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths.
Are 5,100 deaths per year horrific? How about in comparison to other deaths?
All death is sad and especially so when it is in the commission of a crime, but that is the nature of crime. Robbery, death, rape, assault; all are done by criminals to victims and thinking that criminals will obey laws is ludicrous. That's why they are criminals.
But what of other deaths?
• 40,000+ die from a drug overdose THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!
· 36,000 people die per year from the flu, far exceeding the criminal gun deaths
• 34,000 people die per year in traffic fatalities (exceeding gun deaths, even if you include suicide)
Now it gets good
200,000+ people die each year (and growing) from preventable medical malpractice.
• You are safer in Chicago than you are in a hospital!
• 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. Time to stop the cheeseburgers!
So what is the point? If Obama and the anti-gun movement focused their attention on heart disease, even a 10% decrease would save twice the lives annually of all gun related deaths (including suicide, law enforcement, etc.).
A 10% reduction in malpractice would be 66% of the total gun deaths or 4 times the number of criminal homicides. Simple, easily preventable 10% reductions! So you have to ask yourself, in the grand scheme of things, why the focus on guns?
