Doing my best in spite of the horrors
General | Posted 3 weeks agoThought I should post a little something to keep a live pulse going. Been working a lot as per usual, but struggling to work fast or focused, which has been frustrating. I'm behind schedule by a lot more than I want to be, and trying to go as long as possible without taking new orders so I can finish what's already on my plate, but it's rough going thanks to the stupid SNAP benefits shenanigans. I started looking into part-time work again, and I've hopefully got something lined up for a 2-3 day a week gig. If I land that, then I can use that as my income and hold off on taking new orders more comfortably, focus on what's already paid for and just catch up for a damn minute!
In more light-hearted, less important news... I've really enjoyed knitting again lately when I'm finished with stuff for the day. I found a pattern for some really simple slippers, and I've been making a bunch in preparation for holiday gifts (plus a pair for myself!) If you're a newbie knitter, this is a good pattern for you!
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jamma-slippers
The steps are simple, and you don't have to worry about what kind of yarn to use, just your basic acrylic blend is fine. That said, if you've a mind for a fancier wool option it'll definitely be all the warmer! I also want to try knitting myself a hat, like a smaller one for wearing indoors during the colder weather, but so far my attempts at hats have been pretty wonky. They never turn out to be the right size, often trending to extremely baggy despite my best efforts. I'll just keep trying until I get one to come out right!

Uploading without as much commentary
General | Posted 2 months agoWhen I upload art, I like to take my time with it and write a little blurb about it, talking about the client's idea or my own thoughts while drawing it, etc. I always like reading what an artist has to say about something they make, and I like to post things in the way that I'd like to see them from others. When I see an upload titled only "C" for commission, with nothing but a link to their socials as the description, it feels pretty lonely to me. I want my clients to feel excited by seeing the art posted, or to learn something maybe they didn't know from whatever I have to say about the piece. It's just fun!
But, I think for the next stretch of time, that's exactly how I'm going to have to post. I'm nearly a full year behind on posting the art I've been making, and I don't think it's physically possible for me to give each one my usual amount of care and attention. So in the interest of getting myself caught up and getting the art onto the art places, I'm going to go against myself here and post things with little or no description. I'll still title things, and obviously I'm never going to skimp on tagging properly, but it'll look a bit barebones while I catch up. It's a bit of an inconsequential thing to get hung up on, I know, but it's something that kinda matters to me! I wanted to at least announce it a little before I did it, to give myself some peace of mind (and to let people know that I don't like, secretly like their commission less and this is my weird passive-aggressive attempt to show it, lol).
And with that; time to post, post, post!!

Lil' August Update
General | Posted 3 months agoHey all o/ I hope you're doing well! I wanted to give a little update for August, just to keep communication open and show where I'm at with work and life stuff.
I was chugging along pretty good, until about the 15th last month when I hit a hard wall of burn out. I've had burn out before, but it would always clear out in a day or two of rest, nothing to write home about. This one though... wowzers. It hit hard and clung on, making even simple tasks feel mind-boggingly difficult, and it stayed for two whole weeks :I You know how you see people say, "You have to rest, or your body will make you"? I think it must have been something like that; all the stressors in my life hit a sort of critical mass, and my system just shut down on me. I feel like I was a computer that was constantly rebooting and blue screening, kinda. It took me by surprise, because I HAVE been resting on weekends! Or I thought I was, at least. But I often use weekends to do a lot of chores or errands or other things that I fall behind on during the week. I think I was resting a lot less effectively than I realized, heh ^^;
On top of that, the whole ordeal with payments processors trying their damnedest to essentially make adult art illegal has been a major source of stress, to say the least. You can read about that here, as well as do your part to protest this https://stop-paypros.neocities.org/
I try not to worry too hard about things that haven't happened yet, but in the end my heart is not made of steel, and I'm pretty dang scared! I love my job, even if I struggle with it at times. I don't want to see it end because of something so asinine. So yeah, I think everything that was already on my plate, PLUS that added to the mix, was just more than I could carry without breaking apart for a bit.
Unfortunately, that's put me behind my planned schedule a bit, so I'm playing catch up now. So here's what I'm working on at this moment, in order:
- Finishing currently paid for rough sketch orders taken through Artconomy/PP
- Getting WIP sketches made for all outstanding slice-of-life commission orders
- Finalizing the first Monster YCH
- Final Pride YCH order
- Getting a WIP of a larger project from my main backlog
- Sketch page orders taken on IB by the 15th of August
- Posting art to my galleries/socials
I'm taking a break from scheduled streaming this month, to give myself some room. I'd been getting weirdly stressed before streams lately, and that doesn't make for a fun time for anybody, so I'm following my heart and taking a break there.
Zines from Hourly Comic Day are still for sale on my Ko-Fi shop (https://ko-fi.com/malachyte/shop) and I also plan to add my bunny bookmarks from conventions past sometime this month!
Some other things I've been working on or doing, that you won't really see the results of but are still adding to my quality of life:
- I'm halfway through an 8 hour course on understanding finances as a freelance artist
- I've been attending in-person art workshops to further my skills and knowledge, and hopefully make some connections
- I made homemade yogurt (not art related, but I'm excited)
So yeah! I think that's about where things are at now. I'm going to just keep doing my best, learn new ways to get ahead, and keep on fighting. Thanks for reading!

I made a little zine! (and you can buy it if you want)
General | Posted 4 months agoCheck out the listing for photos and order information here - https://ko-fi.com/s/e8769a40cd
Back in February, I participated in Hourly Comic Day for the first time in years, and have printed the panels into a set of three zine booklets you can hold in your hands! The comic shows one highlight per hour of the day I was awake, printed in "stunning" black and white inks on grid based journal paper, and hand-folded without staples while I watch Youtube videos. Each booklet is about 3 by 4.5 inches, and shipping is available to anywhere.
I'm excited to be offering these, and I look forward to getting more stuff put into my Ko-Fi shop soon! I hope y'all like them as much as I enjoyed making them ^^

Changes to Artconomy's Content Policy
General | Posted 4 months agoRead their blog post here - https://artconomy.com/blog/updates-to-our-content-policies-as-a-result-of-recent-legal-changes/
I won't rewrite the whole article, as it's best to read it firsthand with the full information and context provided, but I will give the most pressing cliff notes and a few personal thoughts. I'm disabling comments because I don't think a discussion would accomplish anything besides furthering my own frustration. The situation is what it is, no matter how much any one of us effected by it dislike it. All I can do is move forward and work around the limitations set forth.
Effective July 15th, Artconomy is forced to change it's content policy to ban certain kinds of content. From the blog post:
[Start Quote]
- Any submissions with art that ‘appear to depict a minor’ without clothing covering their physical sexual characteristics or in explicit situations.
- This includes any characters which are canonically older but have a body type that could be confused with a child.
- This also includes non-human characters (human-like minor characters were already banned.)
- This also includes drawings of real adults, even those who gave permission to be drawn, who developed less emphasized sexual characteristics.
- Characters who match the above features and whose contents isn’t directly sexual but which features excretory content are also affected.
- Any products which advertise selling or commissioning content of this nature are included
- Invoices cannot be issued, references may not be uploaded, and deliverables may not be sent through the site which would run afoul of any of the above. We cannot process payments for creation or distribution of works that would violate the law.
Essentially, if it looks like a minor, even if it isn’t one, it will be removed. This will not affect:
- ABDL submissions (keyword being ‘adult’ here)
- Adult-proportioned characters wearing fetish clothing like school uniforms
- ‘Aged-up’ renditions– that is, drawings whose main canonical stories places them as young but are drawn as an older version/with adult proportions
- Text only content, such as prose and poetry.
Artists and commissioners have until July 15th to clear their own galleries of any existing such content before any direct enforcement.
[End Quote]
I'm no stranger to having to treat NSFW cub art differently, even if it's still frustrating that this art topic is targeted more than any other. But I'm freshly and more intensely frustrated that this legal change in particular means that petite, flat-chested adult characters in drawings are no longer valid as sexual beings. The focus on breasts being the thing that makes you a legal adult is just... *deep sigh*
I think the blog post put it best; "Much like other legal changes recently, these changes have downstream effects not anticipated by lawmakers or supporters. They require subjective interpretation and for sites, no matter how small, to act as deputized censors and content police. And due to their subjective nature, they literally cannot be enforced consistently."
Sorry for the somber business post, but I wanted to make sure we're all on the same page going forward. I'll be going through and tidying up my gallery, and figuring out how to take future commission orders for the effected content. Rest assured I'm not going to just quit drawing anything, the process will just be different is all.

Spring cleaning! Profile info update
General | Posted 6 months agoBefore I realized it, my profile info had fallen completely out of date in a lot of areas. I'm going through every site I'm on and cleaning things up there, freshening up the links, all that good stuff. Things should be way more accurate now!
Also, in light of FA showing some genuine positive actions, I'm tentatively going to start posting schedules and stream notices here again. Previously, I resigned myself to using FA solely as a gallery, no social side. I'm still very wary of how things are going to play out in the long term after decades of poor choices, but the recent updates have given me some cautious hope that maybe, just maybe, they actually mean it this time.
Also, question for anyone seeing this. How do you prefer to see stream notices on FA? Do you see them better when it's a journal post, or an image upload?

Commission Updates - Spring Edition
General | Posted 7 months agoWhat's up, everybody! I thought it might be a good idea to post a little something about how commissions work for me, lately. As always, I'm dedicating a few days a week to working through my backlog, while also taking in smaller new projects to support myself financially. I've seen a few confused furs out there regarding how to get something or what I'm even offering, so I hope this can help clear things up a bit, for clients old and new!
Currently, I am only taking commissions using Artconomy which is a platform that facilitates art sales, run by an active team of furries who are passionate about their site. More importantly to me, personally, it uses escrow style payments. This means that once we agree on a sale together, you pay the invoice, and that money is held until I deliver your completed art. This gives you protection and peace of mind in case I take ages or fail to deliver, and it gives me a more sustainable workflow, since I don't get paid until I finish and deliver. This business style works so superbly well for me, I've been loving it so far!
There are some quirks to the site, and it's a bit to get used to I will admit. But so far the reception from you all has been very positive, and it's been helping me a lot with my workflow, so I'm confident that it's worth it. Also, I'm able to legally sell NSFW art there (of ALL topics/kinks/themes!), which is an ability that's becoming increasingly scarce, so that's extra nice.
A few other notes about the website: You can buy things with a guest account, if you don't want to commit to a log in right away. You can pay through the site's processor (which uses Stripe) and get the escrow style model with buyer protection, but you can also pay off-site if you need to for any reason, and still do the rest of the commission process on their site. I know not everyone has a bank card, for example, and that limits who can use their sales interface. So rest assured, I can work with you payment-wise no matter what!
They also have an entire FAQ page, with a few video tutorials to boot, if you find yourself stuck and need a hand!
As for right this minute, I am currently closed for commissions while I catch up on orders in my waitlist. These are orders that are requested, but not yet processed and no money has changed hands. You can follow my Artconomy account and get an email alert when I open again, but I'll also announce it here and on my various socials and things. Right now on my page, you can see what sorts of things I'm offering when I'm not closed, so it's a good chance to take a look and see what to aim for.
On that note! The biggest place I saw people confused lately has been regarding my rough sketch commissions. I've rewritten the listing info for each one to hopefully make it more clear! But basically, I offer two different product listings that are BOTH for rough sketches.
Main Queue Rough Sketches (5 Day Turnaround)
- Includes 1 revision
- Usually not done on stream
- Up to 3 characters is OK
- Allows for private or anonymous orders
- NSFW cub OK
- Simple scenes preferred, but can be a little detailed depending
- Able to upgrade to color later
Picarto Sketch Stream Preorders (1 Day Turnaround)
- Listing appears a day or two before a sketch stream
- No revisions
- Done during Picarto streams
- Up to 2 character maximum
- No private orders, but anonymous is OK
- NSFW art must be of adult-looking characters
- Simple scenes only
- Able to upgrade to color later
A few extra notes to wrap up with; these two listings are very, very cheap. The base price is $15 right now! I know art is something very inherent to the fandom, and something that a lot of furs (myself included) can't often afford to treat themselves to. I've worked for a long time to finally get to a point where I can do sketches this fast, at this price point, and still be pulling a livable wage. I want to offer art to as many of you as I can manage, because I love this fandom.
That said, I can only offer them at this price if it's done in specific ways. That means capping the amount of characters in a single piece, not offering revisions, and not taking complex scenes, as well as only focusing on orders that are done correctly. I've seen a sudden surge of orders that are blank or that miss some of the commission requirements; when that happens, I'm going to decline that specific order, so I don't spend a bunch of extra time trying to get the right information when there are a dozen other orders done correctly. This is nothing personal, it's not meant as an insult to your idea or your characters! I am simply doing what my business requires in order to function in the way I've set it up. If your order is declined, you are almost always welcome to resubmit it the next round (unless I have expressly told you I can't take that idea).
I'm hoping that my recent rewrite of the listings will help with this, as I do see how it was pretty confusing before. But I also would ask of you all to please take a moment to slow down and read the listings, and to proofread your order forms to make sure they make sense. You don't need to race against a clock to submit a form, just relax and go for it.
I apologize if this comes across as... preachy? Whiny? I'm not sure. But to be frank, the way I've been talked to lately has been hurting my feelings. I'm a real person, and I'm only ONE person, running this whole show. From studying art, to making it, to writing my commission info, making websites, writing this journal, buying supplies... all of it, it's just me!
Thank you for reading, I truly appreciate it. See ya soon with more art!

Commission Slots Available + New Listing
General | Posted 11 months agoArtconomy Store Page >>HERE<<
Or rather, I'm opening up for a bigger variety of projects! I still have my listings up for $15 rough sketches, sketch colorizations, pride bow icons, and black and white inks. But if you've been wanting something that doesn't fit those very specific categories, you can now place an order!
Instead of making a listing for every conceivable type of commission I can think of, I'm making this listing as a catch-all and seeing how that works out for me. I tried to make the description as informative as possible for options, pricing, etc., I hope it works out like I'm thinking!
Custom Project Listing >>HERE<<
Here's a copy+paste of the commission info, if you want to check it out without clicking the link--
What is this?
If you have a request that doesn't fit my other product listings, this is for you! For example, maybe you want your OC drawn over a popular meme, or perhaps a brand new reference sheet, or even art for a dakimakura for yourself. Tell me what you're imagining, and I'll let you know if it's something I think I can do!
Once you submit your initial request, your order is placed in my Waitlist queue where I can check the details and start discussing with you. When everything is solidified, your order will be placed into my Active queue, payment is sent and work will begin.
Details
Your order will be tailored to your idea, so details like medium, resolution size, etc. will vary depending on the request. With that in mind, here are some general expectations you can have:
- Traditional media art is made with pencils, micron pens, and Copic markers
- Shipping is available for physical items
- Digital media art is made with Clip Studio Paint
- Price is determined per character, and will increase for complex designs or specialized anatomy
- Complex outfits, props, fluids, and backgrounds will be an additional cost
- A work in progress is sent at every major step; you can request more revisions throughout for an additional cost
- All proposed ideas are private between you and me, even if I don't accept the order
- All rating levels welcome, my "will not draw" list is very short (see below)
Cost Guidelines for Base Prices & Add-Ons

*reads latest FA update* ...You sure about that?
General | Posted a year agoIt's difficult to even put into words how righteously off-putting this "update" is.
Furries, stay weird. Don't let a bid to look pure for the masses encompass you. You're not broken for your kinks, and you don't deserve to be shoved out.
I am so very angry right now.

Away from home for a week
General | Posted a year agoHey all. I'm heading out of town from now until the 27th (at the latest depending), so I won't be able to work on digital commissions until I return. I'll be using the time to work on my traditional media backlog, process new colorization orders, and catch up on messages/posting.
The trip is for heading back down to Connecticut. Saturday will be to attend a wedding, featuring (is that the right word?) my partner's friend from high school. I don't really know anyone there, but it should be a nice time getting out and meeting some new people. The other reason is less nice; there was a recent death in my partner's family, so we'll be meeting with the affected family members to support them and help with whatever they need for a short bit.
I'll still be online and contactable while I'm away, but yeah, no digital commission work til I'm back.

Once again pleading for you to follow me elsewhere
General | Posted a year agoFA was already on the slippery slope of banning more and more content. I was hoping things would change for the better now, but it seems the current team is honoring that time old tradition of "rules however I like, for what I like, and for who I like." If you're not aware, they are deciding that ABDL is now bad and gross. Really cool. Can't wait to see what they ban next! And for extra fun, the rule update isn't shown anywhere publicly yet, you only get to find out in your suspension notice after they serve it to you without a warning.
I am absolutely livid and tired of being fucking pushed around from site to site with empty promises and made up lines to stay inside of. I really need to build my own site for a portfolio somehow.

Streaming [Nancy Drew, Sept. 6th]
General | Posted a year agoIt's time! This Friday, Sept. 6th, I'm going to marathon stream the (hopefully) last bit of Nancy Drew: Shadow at the Water's Edge. I don't actually know how much of the game I have left, but it can't be more than 12 hours of gameplay, right? ...right?
Where - https://picarto.tv/Malachyte/
When - Sept. 6th from 10am EDT to a maximum of 10pm EDT
Come help me get my bearings and solve this case! Is there actually a ghost? Will I have yet more sudoku to solve? Can I teach the robot cat more tricks? See you there!
(And in case you need a refresher as much as I do, the VODs of the previous streams are available here https://picarto.tv/Malachyte/videos )

Mal's website reviews + Where I'm at online
General | Posted a year agoPutting the list of sites you can find me on here at the top for easy access. Only listing the ones I'm super active on for now (I'm name squatting a few more than this).
Gallery Sites: Weasyl || Inkbunny || SoFurry || Itaku || NewGrounds || Furtastic
Social/Streams: Telegram || BlueSky || Picarto
Business/Sales: Artconomy || Ko-Fi || Weebly
I was talking with some friends about the various website options for us furries and artists, and ended up giving a small review of each one. We often see lists of sites where we can find people at, but not really much opinion on the quality or personal experience of using the sites, so I thought I'd share what I wrote. Keep in mind, this is from the point of view of an artist, so your desires for a gallery may differ from mine depending on how you engage with things. Also, this is all just my opinion, so if you see me talk negatively about a site you like, please don't take it personally.
Weasyl - Personally I love it, but I hear the devs/admins/whatever you call them have been absent for years, so the site just kind of exists. It's fine for now, but if it got heavier use, I don't know if anyone is there steering the ship. I rarely get interactions on there, maybe three comments a month and a handful of faves.
Inkbunny - This would be my first pic for "if FA was gone", but a lot of the artists we like to follow on other sites are not on IB. It has a ton of activity, and great artists, but a different pool than the FA/Twitter/Etc crowd. Easiest to use, and about 50% or more of my business comes from there. I get more engagement on my art here than any other site.
SoFurry - This was the first furry site I ever established myself on, and I do like it. It's difficult to post to though, and often has errors when I upload. Interactions are more frequent there than on FA, but less than IB. The general vibe of people there seems very nice, with an active community.
Artconomy - A great tool for sales, I'd recommend this to any artist. You can set up a storefront, manage your queue, all sorts of good features. It's still a newer site and there are things being ironed out, but even still it's been totally worth using. The devs are very active and always looking to improve things. As a place to casually browse art... not so much. Posting ads for my commissions counts as an upload and clutters my gallery since there's no scraps. When others upload art I've made them, it auto-uploads them to my gallery in a random order, without any of the description I would normally put on my uploads. Interactions on my posts there are nearly none.
Itaku - Great for uploading, seems robust, and generally well-liked by quite a few. It seems a little confusing to use, but I also haven't really sat down with it to play with all the buttons. Not my personal fave to browse since it's a timeline format, which I don't prefer. I get a fair amount of favorites on my posts there, but no comments.
NewGrounds - Posting there just to test out a non-furry crowd. I've gotten a few interactions there, to my surprise, but less than on Weasyl. It's easy to post to.
BlueSky - So far I'm enjoying it. There's no algorithm so people are actually seeing my posts. I get more likes there than I ever did on Twitter even when I was posting regularly. Good for finding artists due to the curated feeds you can follow. I recommend it.
Picarto Galleries - Feels like throwing my art into a void. NSFW art seems to be shown to everybody even when I'm logged out and looking, not sure what's going on there. Not really recommended outside of posting examples for your stream sales or something.
Discord - Fun to post to, I love to share my art here with my little circle. I imagine in a more publicly-open discord it's even better engagement. Downside is the obvious; only the people in the discord get to see it, so it doesn't equal growth. But the satisfaction of the posts is much higher, since you can have a conversation about your work once it's posted, rather than a wait-and-see sort of engagement.
Twitter - I no longer use this. Even when I was actively trying, I struggled to gain any traction, and only got stressed from being there. Knowing that revenue from that site literally goes to fund Trump's campaign makes me sick and I wish we'd all quit using it. I also never found it very enjoyable for browsing art or finding things. It's like trying to hold sand.
DeviantArt - Used it back in high school and formed a lot of find memories there, but it is now a shell of itself full of shitty features and AI shilling. I wiped my whole account a while ago and haven't looked back. RIP.
Cara.app - A new Instagram-alike. I enjoy that it has anti-AI tools built in, but it doesn't allow NSFW, so it's a bit pointless to me. Postybirb isn't connected to it, so I have no motivation to use it. If you're a fan of Instagram and don't like what it's become, this may be worth looking into.
FurryNetwork - I used it when it was in Beta. The site creators originally swore they believed in freedom of art of all kinds and allowed cub, then a few bigger named artists threw a fit so they banned it almost immediately. Once I saw the flimsy ideals, I left. I hear it's been a ghost town in recent times. I haven't logged in for a few years.
Pixiv - Easier to use once they made the English version of the site, but you have to censor your NSFW art, so I don't post there anymore since it's too much hassle. I had some decent engagement when I did, though.
e621 - It's ingrained in me for some reason that you never post your own art to an image board, that's something that you just cross your fingers and hope someone does for you. I always feel special when I see my art posted there, but I have never posted anything myself. I hear some artists do use it as a gallery, but also that the crowd there is a bit unfriendly, and things get removed at random with no warning, given the image board thing.
Mastodon - I literally don't understand how to use it even after several explanations. I am too stupid to use Mastodon, orz
I hope this is useful to someone out there! Or at the very least, mildly interesting?
If you know any other hot sites around, I'd love to hear. I've been working to spread my presence online as far and wide as I can handle since 2012, and I ain't stopping now. Gimme more!

Casual Variety Stream
General | Posted a year agoTonight I'm doing something a little different! I'm hosting a casual variety stream. I'm not sure what all we'll do tonight, but possibilities are show & tell, music sharing, story time, doodling, and meme videos. We'll see where things go, I guess!
Topics and such will be mature, so I'm rating it NSFW. Also, mic is on!

Art uploads're back on the menu, boys!
General | Posted a year agoThings are progressing pretty well with my schedule changes that I mentioned in my last journal. Cash is tight, but I'm staying afloat and making progress on my backlog, and that's been really rewarding! It feels so good when I check one of those bad boys off.
And now that I'm more settled in, I finally have time to start uploading all this art I've been making!! I haven't posted any art in 100 years it feels like, hot damn. So yeah, get ready for some uploads, I guess! I'm going to try and upload in chronological order, but I will be posting a few things out of order. I know that probably doesn't matter much to most furs, but I've always been a little stickler about that for myself, ha ha. I just like it~
As for current commission offerings, you can see a nice little menu on my Artconomy page - https://artconomy.com/profile/Malachyte/products/
I'm also going to be streaming this Friday, the 21st, and offering some more $15 rough sketches, so keep an eye out for the stream notification if you're keen to get something!
