Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut Tomorrow!
General | Posted 13 years agoWelp, tomorrow is the big day. I'm going to have to push through my NG+ game and the MP mode to bump my readiness up!
1.9 Gigs though? That's a lot of stuff.
Can't wait. Though listening to the podcast made me aware of things that people should have already known, but then folks will always do that, ignore what was obvious.

Pokemon Conquest Review
General | Posted 13 years agoSo, I finally got the same, sat down, spent a few hours playing it, and I've come to the following conclusion:
This is an excellent first step for Pokemon into the strategy franchise. Really, these Pokemon spin-offs thus far have been extremely solid, if somewhat niche titles (Ranger, Mystery Dungeon, Trozei), but this is definitely something that will likely get more attention simply because it's a strategy game on a handheld.
The game gives you enough elements that it feels like you're playing a strategy game. Recruiting 'Warriors' (Generic generals) and battling 'Warlords' (the major officers), enhancing the Link (basically the replacement for leveling up). You can set the game to delegate the task to another person in your army for each kingdom you conquer as well. Overall, it's a very solid game.
Much like how Mystery Dungeon simplified the Rogue-like genre with a Pokemon twist, Conquest takes the strategy/simulation genre and simplifies it, while still keeping it just complicated enough that fans will appreciate it.
So far I only have a few complaints:
- Pokemon having one attack. It's justified in that, since Pokemon do not level up; instead having a Link value with a Warlord/Warrior which improves their ranks as it goes up, they can't really learn new moves. However, there is an in-game thing that lets you change abilities. Why not attacks too?
- Recruitment. Basically, you usually cannot recruit most major officers the FIRST time you fight them (except for Motochika and Motonari via the Wi-fi download), but the game doesn't make that obvious. Just hints at "special" requirements.
- Swarm Passwords. This is a BIG complaint. So, if you pre-ordered the game from GS there are a set of universal passwords which unlock a swarm of Pokemon. To give context, pokemon can be found in the wild in certain nations, each one specializing in certain types. A swarm replaces the ENTIRE encounter with a certain pokemon. (So, instead of 4 random pokemon, you encounter, for example 4 Eevees). What the game DOES NOT tell you, is that a swarm only occurs ONCE, usually occurs the MONTH after the password goes through, and that the password is only good for ONE use on your game file. That's right. If you screw up on the swarm, that's it.
HOWEVER, most of the pokemon you get via a Swarm CAN be encountered in the game normally. The passcodes just let you encounter them much sooner and in greater number. (For example, Beldum can ONLY be encountered in a swarm, so far, and Riolu can only be found normally post-game). But nothing in the game, nor the manual tells you the restrictions on the passwords.
This aside, if you're a fan of strategy games, Pokemon, or both? I'd definitely recommend it.

Pokemon Conquest
General | Posted 13 years agoWell, it SHIPPED yesterday, but I'll be picking it up today. (Seems the release date and the date when you can buy it are two different things!) I won't say much now because well...my only experience was a STILL mostly untranslated Rom. But I did find that the combat system and the one-move-limit weren't quite so bad. Thought I've a distinct feeling the issue will become quote pronounced later on, especially since there are some dual-type Pokemon with bizarre limitations (For example, Gallade, a Fight/Psychic only has the move Psycho Cut...so it's useless against Dark-Types.)
Anyway, expect an update from me later today.

Toonami is BACK
General | Posted 13 years agoInteresting lineup too, if you ask me:
Bleach (Gotta start with something familiar)
Deadman's Wonderland
Casshern Sins
FMA: Brotherhood
GITS: SAC 2nd Gig
Cowboy Bebop
Some people have pointed out the fact this is basically what you'd see in the normal Adult Swim Saturday Lineup, only with Toonami's name. I then pointed out the fact that Toonami USE to have a Saturday midnight block of programming back in the day called the Midnight Run.
So basically, they've taken Adult Swim's Saturday Night Anime...and reinstalled the Midnight Run in it's place.
But hey, baby-steps, right? Remember when Toonami was on EVERY DAY? I'd say give CN a chance to show we love having it back, and maybe they'll start working in some old classics or expanding the broadcast times.
Of course, it's possible they've lost the license to show the old stuff.
Still, gives me warm and fuzzy feelings to see Tom back again.

ME3 Extended Cut
General | Posted 13 years agoExactly what I was expecting. Kudos to you Bioware.
And thank you for making it free.

Interesting Find...
General | Posted 13 years agohttp://puu.sh/mWCr
Honestly? I'm not surprised. This would be the...third time! They've used a planet description as a plot point.
1) Klendagon: The site where the Mass Effect Canon turned the Reaper Corpse in ME2 from a Reaper into slag
2) "The Leviathan of Dis": Referenced in ME3 as a Reaper corpse the batarians stole for research, which lead to the fall of their civilization.
I'm surprised I didn't catch this sooner, and honestly, this is exactly what we need. There's plenty of ways to describe or explain the Catalyst without giving away specifically what it is, and would be an excellent way to provide the context we need (since really, the Catalyst wasn't a bad idea, he was just presented very poorly and without any solid explanation for it's existence.)
My prediction: Shepard will get a lead from Liara to investigate the planet. Either the Volus merchant and his private army will be dead (slagged by the Reapers) or you'll have to fight them. Either way, you find the "crypt" where you'll learn about the race that existed before the first Cycle, and get hints as to the creation/existence of the Catalyst, as well as some background information which explains why the Catalyst follows it's particular brand of logic. There may be a weapon or War Asset as a reward for completion of the mission.
Of course, this COULD be just a red herring, but it would be a mighty big one if it was.

General | Posted 13 years agoMessage to the ME3 "fans": Enough is enough.
General | Posted 13 years agoI just recently had a friend of mine come to me (No, not of you, I have friends outside of FA, you know ;P) who came to me upset recently. He tried to have a rational, reasonable, calm-minded discussion of the endings. No insults, no flames. And unfortunately, it devolved into a mess.
People in the anti-ending camp stated the pro-enders were idiots, didn't play the game for the story, and in a few cases were retarded.
People in the pro-ending camp stated the anti-enders lacked any sort of imagination, were narrow-minded, and couldn't think for themselves, but had to have everything explained to them.
Apparently now your stance on the endings also makes you more or less of a fan as well. That same friend of mine was browsing FA and found this journal here, with a statement that made him a little upset:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3281263/
"Ending likers" just play the game for the action. No time to think about stuff, just play through and go back to #insert any COD-title here".
"Ending haters" reflect on what they are experiencing, read the codex, play the game with lore in mind. "Ending haters" take a part in the wonderful world.
My friends response to this was, when he spoke to me: "So, despite the fact I played through all three games, liked the characters and the stories, and just happen to be okay with the endings, makes me LESS of a fan?"
My response was simple:
"No."
Indeed, the fact this fiasco has gotten so heated as to devolve into pointless and hurtful elitism shows just how ridiculous the fans have become. And I say fans to include everyone.
There's no requirement that you like or dislike the endings to be a "true fan" of Mass Effect. And being a member of one side or the other doesn't make you any less of a "true fan" either. You should never believe that the opinion you hold makes you anything more or anything less than someone who olds the opposite opinion.
The only people here who aren't real fans, are the people who think that there needs to be a line drawn in the proverbial sand. Who think that it's perfectly reasonable to say you're better than someone else over the opinion you hold.
If you find yourself questioning how much of a fan you are, then likely, you are a fan. You don't have to explain it, or defend it. If you enjoyed the game (regardless of the ending), you're likely a fan. If there were moments that touched you emotionally (again, sans endings) in some way, then you're a fan. If you're someone who thought "Just one more side mission", or "Just one more talk with a squadmate" and then found yourself still playing after it's well past 3am, then you're a fan.
tl;dr version: You stance on the last ten minutes, regardless of what it is, does NOT determine your place as a fan. Don't let ANYONE, ANYONE AT ALL, make you feel otherwise. And if they try to tell you otherwise, brush them off.
No "true fan" would treat their fellow fans in such a way. No one's opinion decides what sort of fan you are.

Holding a Grudge
General | Posted 13 years agoIt's one thing to hold something against someone. I can understand having misgivings towards other people for things they've done that you take personal offense with (that isn't something like rape or murder, I don't expect anyone to forgive anyone for that)
But it's quite another to hold it against them after 3 years. Especially when what you're holding against them wasn't something that emotionally or physically damaged you in any way.
And then to take that grudge and foster it by going around behind that person's back and spreading it around, when you have no idea whether the person has changed or not?
That's just unacceptable.
And don't worry, most of you reading this aren't who I'm referring to. The people who're responsible for the bout of drama this morning know who they are. And I'm very disappointed in both of you.
I've never had any grievances with either of you, but it's rather shameful that you'll go sneak around me like that. If you have an issue with me, at least have the decency to address me about it before getting someone to try and take care of your problem for you.

Something to say about the ME3 fiasco
General | Posted 13 years agoLiking the endings to ME3 doesn't make you a bad person.
Neither does disliking them. Way too often I see this general mindset of "Any reasonable person would dislike the endings! If you're not with us, then you're either retarded or you've never played the games and don't know what you're talking about!"
For example, the response that the IGN and Gamespot articles have gotten, which is "Lol they don't know what they're talking about"
Meanwhile, Forbes, who makes a number of mistakes and rather reaching assumptions in his articles is viewed as some kind of "voice of the fans".
The Child's Play charity is winding down due to a fear that the charity is being connected to the Retake's petition. The response? That somehow EA is using the gaming media in some kind of conspiracy theory to shut down the charity. Which couldn't be further from the truth.
The "Retake Mass Effect" movement seems to be thinking they're lone soldiers struggling against some implacable enemy. And while they profess to being civil and polite, several people connected with their movement have done nothing to belittle and insult anyone who isn't on their side.
This entire "With us or against us" mentality is silly, and really getting out of hand. People who think the endings are good/okay/fine/etc are just as much fans as the folks who dislike them. To imply that they are somehow less of a fan for not agreeing with you?
That makes you worse than them.

This is simply bullshit (ME3 related)
General | Posted 14 years agoSo apparently, if you actually liked the endings of Mass Effect 3 in any way shape or form, you are apparently a terrible, terrible person and are the lowest form of garbage. And if you express the opinion that you like the endings, you're insulting and belittling everyone who dislikes them.
Also, it doesn't matter whether you're polite or reasonable about the fact you like endings. By sheer virtue of liking them, you're a horrible human being.
WAY TO DOUBLE STANDARD PEOPLE.

Mass Effect 3: The future has hope (Spoilers)
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, I finished Mass Effect 3 this weekend, and yes, I saw the endings. And while they aren't exactly what I was expecting, I can say that I have at least a moderate sense of satisfaction. I realize I definitely do not hold the popular view here, but there's quite a bit in the game that I believe means there's still a bright spot somewhere in this seemingly grim future:
"But the relays are destroyed, people are cut off from each other, and the Normandy! The galaxy is super fucked! How is this anything BUT depressing?!"
I admit, it certainly does look that way. But there's quite a bit you can look at that keeps the ending from simply being "The doom of galactic civilization" (Besides the fact that Bioware obviously intends to make more games from this universe, so it's clear they have a way to continue from this conclusion, even if we can't see it)
1) QECs still exist
The Normandy has one that connects to quite a few people in the galaxy, including Admiral Xen, Earth, Hackett, the Delatrass, and two Councilors. There's still a lifeline there. The fact EDI remains intact means the ship has enough power to still operate at least enough for that. So keeping in contact and getting rescue is fine, as long as they can figure out where they are.
2) Conventional FTL still exists
Yes, it's a hell of a lot slower than Relays, but according to the Codex, frigates travel at about 12 lightyears per day. Larger ships can actually travel further than that. The Normandy also has a much, MUCH larger drive core, so it's operational distance is pretty darn far too. It just means it'll take longer to get to where you're going, and you'll need to refuel more often.
3) The multicultural fleet isn't screwed
The geth being there means getting Earth back to a non-fucked state will be quicker. The Asari have their vast knowledge of the sciences, Quarians have their technical expertise, and the Krogan and Turian can provide administration and muscle. Hell, if you got the remanants of the Batarian fleet, even better. As for the food situation? The Quarian have their liveships, which are designed to feed the MILLIONS aboard the Flotilla. I think they can handle the strain of the turian fleet. If that's still a problem, I'm sure food can be grown or produced on Earth. After all, dextro-chirality life already exists on Earth in REAL life, it should work. Plus I'm sure Earth has a way of getting dextro-based food grown (even hydroponically) because it can't ALL be from imports.
4) The remains of the Reapers/Citadel/Relay
Assuming you picked Destroy (the only ending where Shepard lives), there's the now non-functional Reapers, the chunks of the Citadel overhead, and the remains of the Mass Relay. All of which are technology ripe for the plunder. After all, EDI was derived from software from Sovereign, and the Thanix Cannon was reverse-engineered from Sovereign's weapons as well. You could always use what remains to help rebuild.
5) Galactic government
Admittedly, we never know if the Council got off the Citadel or not. Even if they didn't, it's always possible to remake or reconstruct a governing body. Hell, maybe a station could be made for them as the seat of that government. It wouldn't necessarily be the same as before, but it's definitely still there.
6) Shepard
Simply put, Shepard lives in only ONE of the endings (and takes some work to achieve as well), so the possibility of not only Shepard recovering to lead a "normal" (by whatever standards are considered "normal" after such a thing!) life, but also means a reunion with the crew is also possible, as per point #1 While we likely won't see any post-ending DLC to make that a reality, the possiblity exists and is strong.
And there you have it, folks. A shining light in this stifling darkness. I realize that these points require that one take liberties, and this is all essentially head-canon. But the ending and epilogue are both leaving it open. So until Bioware actually comes out and says definitively one-way or the other, there's NO reason why you shouldn't at least take these points with a grain of salt, rather than just flinging your arms up in despair.
EDIT: As someone pointed out, all of my points are indeed speculation (and I won't deny that) because none of what I've said is explicitly stated. But, in the same regard, the idea that the Normandy produces some kind of incestuous colony, Tali and Garrus starving to death, etc etc, is ALSO speculation, based on the fact there's no statement that these things happen either.

"Yoke and Chains" bullshit

What the hell is this?!
Are these people actually serious?!
Why the FUCK is anyone "apologizing" for things that happened centuries ago that don't concern us here in the present the least bit!
I wasn't there for when this happened, and even if my ancestors WERE somehow a part of the slavery thing, that in NO way reflects on me. Those people are dead and not even dust and bones in their graves anymore, they're just GONE.
My anthropology teacher said it best: "I won't apologize to the Native Americans. What happened to them was terrible. But I wasn't there. I'm not responsible. I've got nothing to be sorry for."

NaNo Complete
General | Posted 14 years agoI did it. I finished my third NaNo this year. Unfortunately, it seems my success comes on the same day as the tragic even that I made a journal about just a few hours ago today.
I'll dedicate this NaNo to him then. Sure, the book isn't one he'd probably like to read...but I feel it's the least I can do.

Rest In Peace
General | Posted 14 years agoMy grandfather on my dad's side passed away this evening. My dad got a call from their caretaker that he had stopped breathing, and he left in a hurry. He was in his mid-90s.
...I'm sad that he died, but my sister is in tears and I'm not. I mean, they weren't around a lot compared to my mom's side, but they were trying, and my brother and I visited them at least once a month (that's about as much as they could handle)...but I don't feel broken up at all.
I don't feel angry, or upset, or terribly sad. I think about the fact that he's dead, and it doesn't provoke a huge emotional response. I've actually had an otherwise completely normal evening, and this bugs me.
Is it strange that I'm not more distraught about his death? It's not that I don't WANT to be more broken up about it...but I can't.
Is there something wrong with me?

Mass Effect 3 - 360...or PC?
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm going to get the Collector's Edition either way, but I need to decide which to pick:
I currently own ME1 and 2 for the 360 (Heck it's one of the reasons I even OWN a 360), so logic dictates I get it for the 360 as well, yes?
But if I want to enjoy the multiplayer on the 360...I'll have to purchase XBL time.
On the other hand, I can get ME1 and 2 for the PC easily enough (even though most of my saves are on the 360), and buying it for the PC will save me purchasing XBL time.
...But then I might have to deal with Origin.
Also, I have NO idea who will be getting it for what system, as I'd like to play with my friends.
Your thoughts?

National Novel Writing Month - Year 3
General | Posted 14 years agoOnce again it's that time of the year. Time to sit down and churn out another 50k words in the form of a possible story.
As always, when it's done, I'll put it up here for you guys to peek at. For now I'll just tease you with the title, synopsis, and an short excerpt to whet your appetite.
Title: The World Made of Glass
Synopsis: In the wake of a devastating alien invasion, the last remnants of human civilization try to pick up the pieces of Earth's shattered and dying future. This novel chronicles their struggles as they do their best to survive in a world that may die, no matter how hard they might try.
Excerpt: For the longest time, we didn’t know the reason why. It’s strange like that. Human beings, of all living things, need to know the ‘why’ of something. Animals don’t care why something happens. They don’t care why the sun rises or falls, why the clouds move across the sky or why the rain falls from the sky. They don’t care why they eat plants, other animals, or even each other. They don’t care why they themselves sometimes are eaten. But human beings? Us sentient, sapient animals? We care more about the why than any part. Who, what, when, how, they are useful in a numerical sense, in the sense that they are data. Points to be recorded for posterity.

City of Heroes?
General | Posted 14 years agoJust curious how many folks I know around here play CoH, and have any 'monstrous' Heroes? (Basically non-human)
Haha, also, do you happen to play them on Virtue?
Asking because I started my new alt (Altitis, IT BEGINS) who's basically a "kid" in Paragon City, totally new to the city, wanted to give the poor guy a run for his money.

You know what sucks II: Electric Boogaloo
General | Posted 15 years agoI know this guy. He's smart, charming, intelligent, knowledgable, good sense of humor, is remarkably stable and mentally sound, holds a conversation well, good-looking, we share a lot of interests including video games and shit, and has a pleasant personality and a REALLY good-sounding voice.
What's the one problem?
He's fucking straight.
I know this because he often mentions this girl. They aren't steady, more off-and-on, but he likes her, says she brings some excitement to his life. And I'm sitting here thinking about how this cunt won't appreciate him the way I might and that she won't have nearly as much in common with him as I do and how fucking dare she think she's good enough for him and-
I realize that I'm getting pissy over someone I've never met and she might be a decent person and totally not a monster bitch the way I would like her to be just so I could justify wanting to try (and likely fail) to take her man. And then I feel even worse.
Sonuvabitch.

Welp, glad that's fixed.
General | Posted 15 years agoDragoneer posted an explaination for how the hacking took place, and it seems things are, for the moment, secure.
Now people just need to stop with the "rape apologist" and "impeding criminal investigations" bullshit. Because there's no solid, non-circumstantial evidence of that.
Really folks, get over it.
Also, don't claim you're leaving over "security issues" or "issues of moral standing". You're not fooling anyone with that BS.

My response to the recent FA drama....
General | Posted 15 years ago1) So the site was hacked, and some kid with a chip on his shoulder wanted to try and ruin Dragoneer and get him removed as admin. Lovely. Honestly, you've all known that admins can read PMs. And this is a free site, which offers free services. I wouldn't put my personal information up here, or ANYWHERE. Even someplace like Amazon.com can get hacked if someone tries hard enough. Not saying this is an excuse, but really, we don't know what Dragoneer's RL schedule is like or what his life is like. It can NOT be an easy thing for him to run and maintain the site. Don't act like it is.
2) As for the "Animal abuse" screencap? I don't care. Really. There's not enough info or context for me to render any kind of judgment. Sure, those select passages makes it look like he's covering up for the guy, but we don't know what was talked about before that screencap, after that screencap, or what lead to the conversation in that screencap. I don't think any sort of judgment call can be made. Anyone can claim to do anything. I could claim I raped and murdered someone in horrifyingly specific detail (I'm a writer, trust me I could) but as I obviously didn't rape or kill anyone, just my posts or notes don't say enough to implicate me. You. Need. Context. Seriously, you guys are looking for anything right now to cry foul on, huh?
3) As for the "Zaush allegedly raped someone" issue, I think Dragoneer did NOTHING wrong. And yes, I say "allegedly" because I have absolutely nothing besides her word that indicates such a thing happened. A neutral stance was the correct course of action. I've learned personally that, when you post journals about hot/controversial topics and then name-drop, you are guaranteed to start a drama war. Luckily, when I made the mistake of doing so in anger, I had someone proverbially slap me and I removed the journal with the names before damage was done. I'm not saying this applies to the "victim" here, but 'Neer was right. If she made a spectacle of the issue, no matter if it was true or not, she'd cause all sorts of drama and nothing meaningful or productive would come out of it. Really, naming names here doesn't fix or solve anything. I'm bothered that people consider him taking a neutral stance as somehow WORSE than taking a side. Just because he didn't automatically believe her and ruin Zaush, makes him a "rapist apologist"? Wow.
On top of that, said "victim" posted in the journal regarding the "Zaush Event" and stated for the record that she bears 'Neer no ill will, and doesn't blame him for anything. So why are people so quick to claim disgust and revulsion at him when the "victim" herself plainly does not? It doesn't do anyone, any good.
In short, this isn't anything new, just more drama. Happens so often I've gotten use to it and just shrug. FA will survive, this, as it as every other bomb. I'm not going anywhere.
EDIT: As an added note, Zaush never actually threatened her with physical harm, no? No gun was held to her head or her arm yanked behind her back, yes? So why didn't she just stand up to him and say no? I know he was bigger than her and intimidating, but again, would he really risk criminal charges if she stood her ground and told him "fuck off?"
Inb4 "coersion argument blah blah blah"
