PCA Newspaper: The New and the Old (Part 2)
General | Posted 17 years agoOnce again, this is (like the last one) an article from the PCA Newspaper, 2 out of 3. The same rules as the last one apply here as well.
The New and the Old Part 2: Respecting Our School
Hello once again, PCA! I was actually pleasantly surprised by the responses I received from the previous article. In fact, the majority had honest questions and reasons points to argue, all of which was most appreciated! It's nice to see that students can think clearly and without personal bias. Of course there were a few flames (mostly in the form of emails about "How dare you!" and what not), but the majority of your opinions and questions were reasonably stated and informed.
And now, my loyal readers, we move on to the next hot topic. Yesterday, it was the school dress code, and rather ridiculous reaction by many of the students. However, it seems mere words are not enough for some students. Some have resorted to...less than legal methods of fighting back. To be more specific: Vandalism. Now, to be honest, in the 2 years I've been here, vandalism was never a huge issue. You'd occasionally get some scribbling random artwork on the walls, the occasional obscene message on the wall in a bathroom stall. No, the first true incident of Vandalism actually took place long before Darius took power. It occurred during last year's Spring Break trip.
For those of you who are new, or didn't know, last year the school budgeted a trip out to the absolutely divinely tropical weathered Orange Islands. It was sheer bliss: sand, sun, surf, the jungle...It was simply heaven on earth. And those of use who went got into all sorts of mischief and misadventures. Eventually of course, it had to come to an end. And when we got back, what awaited us was a disaster. Somehow, several walls on the school had graffiti drawn all over them, and several wild species of 'mon were let loose on campus. The scope of the damage was much larger than you might imagine.
No suspects were ever found, and no one was ever punished, though the word among the student body, was that it was the action of a one Rylai Summers, who can be defined as the physical incarnation of political activism. Of course, there was never any proof, but nonetheless, the damage had been done. We would not see any other major acts of vandalism until long after Principal Aubtraum had taken power. Still, once he had taken his role as our new Principal, minor acts of vandalism began to start almost immediately.
And this is what I have to know: Why in the world are you idiots doing this?! What do you possibly hope to achieve by defacing and ruining the school's property? Do you think you are defending some noble cause? That are you are "attacking" the base of Mr. Aubtraum's power? Well, allow me to apply a backhand reality check. YOU'RE NOT. You're not doing anything just, or anything righteous. You're not going to change anything. The only thing your acts of vandalism do is cause the rest of us upstanding students more grief! Why? Because, when the faculty can't catch you, they must place restrictions and penalties on everyone, as a catch-all.
And don't try to justify your deplorable accomplishments with the fact the teachers crack down on us. They only do so because they have no choice! Your actions leave them with no other option but to punish everyone, because some of you think you're somehow doing the rest of us a favor! Well, you're not! The best thing you could possibly do is come forward and turn yourselves in, or at least stop causing damage. And I know that, perhaps among you thugs and punks, there are a few of you who don't feel completely at ease doing what you do. You sometimes hesitate before defacement of the walls, you wonder "Am I really doing the right thing?" If any of you are reading this, then I implore you. Listen to that moment of hesitation.
You may believe that you're doing the right thing, and that somehow this bit of damage you're inflicting will in the long run benefit us. It won't, believe me. You're just contributing to the constant squeeze being inflicted upon those of us who are innocent. The teachers and faculty have no desire to punish us, they take no pleasure in our suffering, but unless we give them a decent reason to ease their grip, (say, by following their rules!) they won't stop. All you Rylai Summers out there who think you're somehow "fighting the good fight" need to stop and really think about your position.
But there are those...those thugs and punks, who's only real purpose for causing property damage, is your own selfish, twisted amusement. You are most despicable. Second only in my list of contempt next to those fools who believe they are defending some moral cause. You are truly unforgivable. But my wrath falls on all of you, so I'll raise my fist and make this statement perfectly clear. You vandalizing days are numbered. Especially those responsible for the more recent batch of property damages. If the teachers alone are not enough to stop you, then I ask that the student body itself take action.
Now, before anyone gets any ideas, I am NOT advocating violence or violent action! Violence should always be the absolute last resort, when all other methods have failed. No, what you should do, is keeps your eyes open, and your ears to the wall. Take note of any awkward or suspicious activity. Report to your teachers or to the VPs. Regardless of what you hear, or think, the teachers are willing to listen to you! It's why they're here! Not just to teach, but to listen!
Now, if you find that you think a vandalism attempt is imminent (for example, within the next few minutes), and there's nothing you can do that will a teacher to intervene in time. Then do what you can to stop them yourself. Interpose yourself between them and their target. Take photos, record voices. Do what you can to get evidence against them. If they attack you, THEN, defend yourself. Do NOT attack them first. Your job is not to be The Punisher, you're not the law, don't take the law into your own hands. But, I still empower you to do everything else you possibly can to stop them.
These punks who think it's their right, or that it's just fun, to deface and destroy our school, do not deserve to be here. They have no appreciation for the hard work and effort the rest of us put into showing the outside world what PCA stands for. Don't let these nobodys drag the rest of us down with them!

PCA Newspaper: The New and the Old (Part 1)
General | Posted 17 years ago(Note, this journal really only applies to those members of the PCA, and unless you're bored, or happened to be interested in some random IC event, then you don't need to read this)
The following is from an article written in the Pokemon Combat Academy's school newspaper, under the Opinion's column, a section edited (and sometimes written by) Riou Hotaru.
The New and the Old, Part 1: Freedom of Expression
A fine day to you, my fellow students here at the PCA. With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I'm sure you all have plans on how to show that special someone that you care about them, even if they might not necessarily know you do. This makes this the perfect time to discuss an issue that has recently come to my attention as a major concern among the student body: the ability to express oneself as an individual.
There was much grumbling and unrest when the new dress code was unveiled, and much of the student body disapproved of suddenly not being able to wear their favorite attire on campus. Which was understandable, as this was part of the means that we students use to personalize ourselves as individuals. However, for many, it simply wasn't acceptable. Shortly after Winter Break, we returned to school to find that a uniform policy had been enacted, forcing all of us to wear pretty much the exact same thing.
And that apparently was the straw that broke the Camerupt's back. Students voiced loud protests and outrage and the "complete destruction of originality". But I have to ask, is it honestly such a crime to be asked to wear a set of modest attire while on campus? Admittedly, this change of policy effects me very little, given I already wore suits and ties to begin with. But for many, it was a radical change.
So, who was to blame for this shift of policy? While discussing this issue with a friend (who will go unnamed due to my respect of him and his beliefs), he brought up his stance that the teachers were the ones at fault, for being lazy, or otherwise uncaring and indifferent to the situation. In response, I countered that it was the fault of the students, who were unwilling to follow a simple set of rules. We both believed one party or the other to be wholly responsible for the whole affair, but in hindsight, it was likely the fault of both sides.
It'd be unfair to say all the teachers are lazy and indifferent, but it's true that likely some of them are more lax than others. But I doubt any of them simply don't give a Rattata's ass (no offense to you rodents in the audience!). And at the same time, while there are students who defy the rules, there are those who do their best to go along with the rules and want to do right by the faculty.
But to that same regard, I've noticed that students, especially when forced to improvise, are rather adaptable creatures, crafty to a shocking degree. I once saw a girl in my class, who a top that showed too much cleavage, and too much midriff, more than would be ever considered tasteful. She hid it in class by wearing a jacket that fell in line with dress-code standards, which allowed her to hide her inappropriate garments, and the teacher was none the wiser. As soon as she was out of class, she took the jacket off and went back to showing off her body.
She was later caught by a teacher when on the way to her next class, but the point is clear: students will go to great lengths to try and get around the rules. It's clear that if they want to break the rules, they will. This makes me somewhat confused. Is the wearing of uniforms for a few hours, just during school hours, really such an unbearable burden? I was accused by said friend, of not understanding what it meant to have personal freedom. He said that his anger came from the fact that he was no longer allowed to be himself that he was just like everyone else.
While this is a valid point, what about the small minority that wishes to conform? I am, myself, one of these individuals. All my life I've been singled out, different from everyone else for my beliefs and habits. You have no idea what a godsend it was to come to PCA, and to finally be just another face in the crowd! For once I wasn’t different, I wasn’t a black Mareep anymore! I was another student, just like everyone else! For me, the expression of personal style comes in private, or around my good friends. And it isn’t in just my clothes either. It’s in my words, my body language, even my fighting style. I see this fixation on clothing or hair color, and it boggles my mind. I mean, if you, like my friend, worry about grades, home life, your future, and your significant other, shouldn’t you be relieved that you aren’t burdened by having to decide what to wear every morning?
But regardless of that, the time period during which you have to wear these clothes, is miniscule compared to the 24 hours of which the day comprises. Once school is done, you are free to wear whatever you please! Why then is it such a bother? Another friend present with me at the earlier argument made a point that wearing these uniforms somehow made it difficult for students to focus on their work. But is there proof of this? I would think it would be infinitely more distracting to have to stare at a fellow student’s barely clad body, then to stare at a covered sweater/vest combo. Is this distraction stemming from some personal insecurity at having to wear these clothes? If that is true, I would love for someone to come forth and say so. While it is fine and dandy to make claims and assumptions, without proof, there is nothing to back these claims up. If a student were willing to give me concrete evidence, I could consider this.
But, my final opinion on the matter? That the uniforms, like the dress code, are ultimately beneficial, and in the long run, it will not take away from us or our individuality. We are kids yes, we are Lucarios, Absols, Eevees, Polis, Gardes and Gallades. We are Bugs, Fighting, Dark, Psychic, Water, Fire, and Flying. We are ‘mon, with lives and dreams and hobbies and fantasies. But when we are in school, we are PCA Students, we are the embodiment of that principle. We are better than most, we are talented, smart, bright, full of energy and ambitions. While we are in class, we should try to be an example of that ideal, and live up to that standard. Even if we don’t agree with it all, we should be role models for those before us, and those who will come after.

The Perfect PCA RPG Video Game
General | Posted 17 years agoThere is apparently someone (whose name I forget) who is using RPG Maker 2000 to try and make a PCA RPG. And I have to give him serious credit for it, that's an undertaking I'm not sure I could do myself. I tried making a game once, and even making the opening cutscene was SUCH A PAIN IN THE ASS.
However, contemplating this, caused me to wonder: What would make up the mechanics of the perfect PCA RPG? So, to try and answer this for myself, as a random flight of fancy, I came up with this exposition. It's probably incomplete, but I tried to cover as much as I could.
Just to warn you, this is a LONG ASS JOURNAL. I do NOT want any comments saying "tl;dr". If you want to look at this, then you take the time and read the whole fucking thing! D:< Otherwise it's simply insulting to just be a douche and look at the first paragraph, and then comment "lol, tl;dr"
Without further ado......
Perfect PCA RPG
1. Character Creation
While the temptation is to want to play a character that already exists in the setting (and likely, a separate mode of play), it would be much more meaningful and interesting to have the player create their own student. Character creation would involve choosing a name, gender, species, ability and first 4 moves. New characters will pretty much always start at Freshmen level. Again, while playing at higher grade levels could be an unlocked option, to experience the full range of gameplay and story immersion, starting as Freshmen is recommended.
As far as selecting species, a large range can be selected, as can different evolutionary stages. However, while a player would be tempted to play a higher evolutionary stage to allow for a stronger starting character, you might lose access to certain moves, and your stats won’t be as high by the end. For those genderless Pokemon, you can select a male shape, female shape, or simply genderless state. Also, a choice of some basic attire is also selectable from the start as well.
2. Stats, Moves, Skills, etc.
At the start, you have a pool of points which you distribute to your basic stats: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. Also, you have your Nature, which makes points towards certain stats mean more or less (For example: an Adamant nature means each point put towards Attack counts as 2 points, but it takes 2 points to increase Special Attack by 1). Your Pokemon ability is determined automatically, unless your species has more than one, which gives you a choice then.
Once these are selected, you go on to moves. Now, unlike the actual Pokemon franchise, level does NOT determine what moves are available to you. In fact you have access to that ‘mon’s entire movepool. Of course, you still have to be careful what you select. Choosing overly strong moves right from the get-go may limit your ability to use those moves in combat (which will be explained later). But some species have better areas of attack, which makes choosing stronger moves easier. Note: this game assumes a familiarity with Pokemon already, though each move comes with a video demonstrating its effect so you’re not completely in the dark.
Evolution is also possible, assuming you meet the level requirements, and any other requirements that are necessary for evolution. And even then, evolution isn’t always the end-all, be-all of having a character. Evolving can change stats, alter the properties of moves, and can even effect your relationships. It’s a serious issue, never to be taken lightly. As for when evolution can occur, it can occur during a fight, in your dorm, even in class! (Those this is rare)
What are Skills? These are a new addition. These are things your character picks up as he progresses through the school year. Training, private tutors, studying/sparring with friends; all of these contribute to the learning of skills. All of them have some kind of prerequisite, whether they be having stats at a certain level, or having relationships, or doing well in certain classes. At the beginning, you can select from a small pool, but as you gain levels and progress through the school year, you’ll have access to more. Skill points are also gained at level-up, and are distributed separately. It should be noted, that to prevent players from feeling gypped that certain skills can’t be obtained until they are much higher levels, plenty of skills are retroactive, so that the player doesn’t feel they wasted their time earning that one skill they wanted.
Not all the skills are combat related, either. Some improve your stats, others improve the chances of success at varying mini-games, some improve your ability to make friends.
Traits are another new addition. These help shape the character’s personality and, well, character! These are usually like skills, only they cannot be improved offering a single benefit that has an effect over the entire duration of the character’s playtime. These are things like Anti-Social, which improves your ability to study (as long as it’s done alone or with a Fellow Anti-Social), while making it harder to improve friendships. Like your Nature, they make is easier to do one task, while making it more difficult to do another. Some of them are even more complicated.
Other Traits are actually gained over the course of gameplay! Are you a goody-two-shoes? There’s a trait gained for that? A combat junkie? Trait for that as well! Each Trait shapes your character’s design. Of course, if you change your character’s routines and habits, his traits will change too. Originally a Pacifist (opposite of Combat Junkie) and started fighting again to the extreme? Your traits will change to reflect this shift. Of course, if you only begin fighting in moderation, you’ll simply lose the Pacifist trait. You lose its advantage, but you don’t suffer its disadvantage either. This reflects the changes a character can undergo. Now, not all traits are double-edged. Some are purely beneficial, some are purely negative. It all depends on your character’s choices.
Of course, your ability to do well academically, as well as with your personal relationships, is also a Statistic, from which you allocate a small pool of points as well. However, you do not gain more points as you gain levels. Academics is an actual stat that grows automatically as you take classes and courses, do homework, and study, and reflects your actual ability to perform in those classes. Your Personality is also a set of stats that grows automatically, but does not reflect your ability to perform certain tasks. For example, if a school bully threatens you, having low Courage won’t keep you from standing up to him. The personality stats more reflects the actions your character has taken, and thus affects your relationships with others. In the same example, a character with low courage will be expected to not fight the bully. Doing so might cause some surprise among your fellow classmates.
3. The School Life
PCA is a private Academy for the best of the best, based in Viridian City. As such, your character may either live in Viridian with relatives or family friends, or could have come from other cities, or even other regions! Also, what economic class did you come from? Upper class? Middle class? Did you get in on sponsorships, scholarships, or did your folks pay for your attendance. Do you live on or off campus? What part of the city do you live in if you live off-campus, and which dorms if you live on? Do you need to get up early to catch the bus or have your parents drive? Or do you live in the dorms and have the option of waking up 10 minutes before class? These can all have a tremendous impact on the way you play.
Also, this isn’t like Persona 3 or 4, where a schedule is rigidly determined from the moment you arrive at school. You get to choose your classes, alter your workload. Pick something to fit what you think your character, or even yourself would do! Remember though, as this is a Combat Academy, there is an obligation to take some combat related courses, whether you feel like it or not. Combat Basics 101 is your first combat course as a freshman, and serves as the tutorial for getting use to the system.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a complete academy without extracurricular activities like after-school clubs, sports, or other such groups. Some of the clubs might be school-sponsored, while others might be made by the students who share a common interest. Of course, don’t be afraid to make your own either! Who knows, you might find you’re not the only one who likes to watch old horror movies or participate in sewing! You might even make new friends through these clubs.
Also, school isn’t just a static day-to-day routine either. Events and happenings on school can have an impact on what you do in a day. School dances, vacations, random incidents, all of which can alter what you do in a day as well. Of course, while attendance is a good thing when it comes to classes, it’s not a requirement. Being a few minutes late to class is fine, 10 minutes late is alright, but you might not increase your skill as much in that class. Also, you can skip class entirely! But be careful, there are always consequences to your actions!
4. Your Friends and You
Easily the most important and most complicated aspect of the PCA, the people you meet, your fellow students and teachers, are what makes the school so ridiculously immersive. They’re not cardboard cut-outs either. They all have their own ideas, thoughts, hobbies, dreams, and quirks. Just like you, they’re characters with Stats, Moves, Traits, Skills, Academics, Personality, and particular friendships and rivalries. Each of them is a unique individual, and it’s your decision to make friends or enemies. Of course, you don’t have to talk to any of them, or interact with them besides what is absolutely necessary, but where’s the fun in that?
As each of them is different, how you interact with each of them is a little different. Not all of them respond to the same dialogue and choices as everyone else does. It’s harder for a Combat Junkie to make friends with a Pacifist, but it can be done! That’s the most important thing to remember, you can make friends with just about anyone on the campus, if you’re willing to spend the time (and sometimes money) to do so! Of course you can’t be friends with everyone, no matter how much you may want to. As you make friends with some, others may not like you for associating with them. Others may be indifferent to your activities. Others might take an interest in your associates.
And you don’t have to worry about making friends with each member of a team either. Knowing people in a team and getting to know them can quickly develop a friendship before you know it! Know a team member well? You might find his teammates may give you favors, gifts, come to your assistance in times of need, or even ask for help from you! The same thing goes for your team as well. Just as you have friends, they do too. And you can help encourage their relationships, or try to destroy them, whichever you decide. But again, beware of how you treat people, because all your actions have consequences as well.
And people react differently. Some friends prefer to be treated with the utmost kindness and respect, while others may prefer a tough love approach. But you’ll find that not everyone may approve of your methods. Are you an upper-class kid who showers his friends with gifts and shopping trips? You find others sneering and calling you rich-kid. Are you overly kind and respectful of your upperclassman peers who help you with tough courses and training? You might find yourself being labeled as a suck-up. You can’t get everyone to like you, but you’ll come to appreciate the friends you have.
Friends offer all kinds of benefits, from buddies who offer their emotional and moral support through tough times, study buddies, people who will eat lunch with you and discuss current events, sparring partners, and even buds to go to the movies with. And by making friends, you might get access to things, like private tutors or stores that weren’t originally available to you. But you’re not just limited there either. Make pals with your professors to make a normally deplorable class more agreeable. Or the teacher may offer you hints and advice to help you in other courses, or might offer you private lessons to improve your skills! Even the most anti-social of characters benefit from a few friends!
Your friends are not static either, their relationships are evolving and changing even they’re not hanging around with you. They have their own lives that they’ll engage in, and depending on how good of friends you are with them, you might find yourself engaging in a number of intriguing side-stories and sub-quests to help them, some of which range from minor fetch quests, to full-on boss battles and epic storylines! It’s all within your power to do so.
5. Can Love Bloom on the Battlefield?
Of course, with these relationships, comes affection, and possibly, love. Ah yes, dating, one of the biggest hurdles for any teenager. Did you meet a classmate who right away, impressed you? Did you admire their academic or combat abilities, and pay special attention to them? Do they have a personality that you find draws you to them? Well then, as you become their friend, there’s always the possibility to date! Now, during character generation, there are Traits that govern sexual orientations, making it easier to date one gender, and much harder to date the other (unless you didn’t pick one, or selected Bisexual), but that doesn’t mean you can to work inside the box.
If you’re really that interested in someone, go after them! Try to spend more time with them, get to know them, their quirks, likes and dislikes. Give them gifts, make them feel special. Now, of course, you can’t date everyone. Some characters are harder to date than others, and some unfortunately, can’t be dated at all. Still, as far as the student body is concerned, no one is completely off-limits. It may simply prove to be harder to get a particular person than others, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying.
This is where your Personality stats come into play. People are attracted to certain qualities, and having stats in these areas will improve your chances of successfully getting a date. This is primary reason for getting to know that person, so you can figure out what they like. You should know, even if you do secure the first date, there’s no guarantee of a relationship sprouting from it, though such dates do greatly solidify friendships! And if things don’t necessarily work out, don’t despair. You usually stay friends, and move on to greener pastures.
If it does work out, you’ve got something precious that you need to devote time to. Having a boyfriend/girlfriend is not a simple or easy thing, and takes time and love and affection to maintain. Make sure you visit them, give them gifts, and try to keep them happy. Attend their matches, and help them study. As usual, this can affect your relationships with others. Perhaps some of your friends were attracted to you, but didn’t have the courage to say so. Or perhaps one of your friends was interested in your current love interest, and now you’re left with them harboring jealousies towards you. Or, perhaps your friends don’t approve of your choice. Either way, it’s a choice you have to make. And your fellow students don’t sit idly by either. They’re working towards their own goals, which may include trying to get a particular guy or girl to be their special someone. Who knows, you might find yourself competing for the same person!
6. After Hours
Of course, campus is more about school. Once the school day ends, you have the rest of the day to decide what to do. Do you go home and study? Do you call your friends up and go hang out at the local fast-food joint? Or do you stick around on campus and do some after school work to earn a few bucks or extra credit? It’s again, all up to you. Viridian is your oyster to enjoy, so make the most of it! Go out and do some shopping to get those duds you wanted, or that new computer game.
Worried that if you don’t always study, you’ll lag behind, but still want to hang out with your friends? Go ahead and form a study group! Not only do you get to keep up on those mathematical equations, you also get to socialize as well, and keep up with your friends. It doesn’t always have to be studying either. Reading books, playing games, and even shopping can increase your Academics or Personality stats. So there’s no need to constantly fret over stat management either.
Of course, not all of these after-hour activities are fun and games. You might find yourself involved in any number of events and incidents as well. For example, when the campus changes and comes under new management, there’s a string of random vandalisms. Do you clean up after them and set an example for your peers? Do you try to find these wrong-doers and bring them to justice? Or do you join them in their random acts of violence and property destruction? It’s these decisions that make your character a person, and shape their school experiences. Of course, these after hour actions will of course your relationships with your friends, so think carefully.
Don’t feel limited to just Viridian either! Visit one of the other cities in Kanto, or go to Saffron and take the Bullet Train to Goldenrod for a little field trip! Or even a trip to Hoenn or Sinnoh during the vacations or on the weekends! You might get into all manner of adventures and quests while you’re out there. And you might come back with gifts and souvenirs for your friends. That is if you didn’t take them with you, or if they didn’t invite you on a trip of their own!
7. Combat
As you are a part of a Combat Academy, fighting plays an important role. From the beginning, you have the option to be in a team (as its leader or not) or to go independent and fight by yourself. Either is an acceptable option, and you may find that you wish to change your style as you go along. Perhaps the team you’re on isn’t working for you. Or perhaps you have friends, and want to fight with them. Or they might even come to you asking to have your power on their side! It’s an important part of the experience, so I would suggest that people try going independent at first.
Being on a team is a full-time obligation, and being its leader is even more attention-demanding. You can create a team at character creation, and while you can customize your teammates to an extent, their growth is not under your control. You can set emphases for them, but stat growth and character growth are out of your hands, as they are their own individuals. As a leader, you have to manage your team’s training, practice, and deciding who to challenge, and whose challenges to accept or deny. Being a follower isn’t too different, except that you have to arrange a schedule that allows for practices and team meetings, and always making sure you’re on time when your team has to fight!
Combat itself is an adventure all on its own. None of this turn-based stuff you were use to on the GBA, this is real-time! Fighting in a ring is an exercise in ability and skill. Use your moves carefully. You have your health, which directly determines how much you can keep fighting. Run out of HP and you’re knocked out. You also have your “Special”. This gauge determines the energy you have available to use for your special attacks, the moves you selected at character generation. As you use moves, your Special depletes. Based on your Attack and Special Attack scores, and which attacks you used, the bar will slowly regenerate, allowing you use of your techniques once again. This is why you didn’t go for those super powerful moves at the start!
Of course, every fighter has a finishing move, an attack they use to try and definitively end a match. Through successful attacks, combos, and dodging of enemy attacks, you build up a Stock gauge, which, when charged let’s you execute one of your attacks as a finishing blow, a Super! Use these to end a match in style! Your performance during a match determines how much exp you receive at the end of it too. Keep your health up, your attacks hitting, and play it smart to score major points. Of course, the tougher your opponent, the more you’ll receive too.
Now, different from other RPGs, is this important feature. With a few obvious exceptions (teachers and most adults/tutors), any of the battles in the game are winnable. There are no hopeless boss fights. There might be tough fights where it doesn’t matter if you lose, but if you win, not only can you earn a substantial reward; it can have a drastic impact on the game! A Freshman beating a Senior is quite a difficult feat (almost impossible in some cases), but if a smart and cunning player manages to pull it off; they should be rewarded, no? You might find that same Senior comes back for revenge, or that you gain friends who respect your victory or skill. Underdogs are awarded for smart choices!
As you progress through the school year, you’ll get to choose new moves that your character can slowly master, to use during the next grade level, or to try out against your next opponent in the ring! With help from teachers, you can improve the rate at which you learn your attacks, or even learn the ability to chain moves together to devastating effect! Of course, the exp you learn while fighting, contributes towards your level, which ultimately improves your stats, allowing you to fight better. And as you improve, you won’t be the only one who’ll admire the fruits of your labor. Other students may recognize your skill and prowess, which might nets you more friends, rivals, and possible challenges! Use these to improve yourself and work your way up!
7. Climbing The Ladder
Of course, all this progress doesn’t go unrecognized either. As your skills improve, both in the field of academics and combat, you’ll find that people will gradually begin to recognize you. Some of that recognition will be positive; some of it will be negative. Some will want to aspire to be like you, others will wish to bring you down a notch for your “arrogance” (real or imagined). People may wish to get you onto their team; others may try to fight you to recruit you. It’s even possible you could be recognized by talent agents from the League! Such recognition might net you special awards, like cash, and special training which will improve you far beyond what the school offers.
And of course, at the end of a long school year, you’ll go up a grade level, which leads to new moves, changes in schedule, and different events. All of which is altered and subject to change according to the choices that you made over the course of the school year!
8. Game Over?
How does the game end? Well, your character never dies. At worst, during a battle, you could sustain serious injury and wind up in the hospital. Even constantly losing doesn't mean that you'll fail either. Really, the only game over conditions are when you finally reach senior year and graduate, or if you're caught doing enough bad or naughty things and get kicked out of the school. Or, should the player choose to delete their character and start over!
And that's all I can think of at the moment. No need to take this too seriously. I was bored, and wanted something to get this thing out of my head and onto paper.

Independant Game First Look: Iji
General | Posted 17 years agoThis may come as old news to people, but I recently discovered this indie game, which went by the name Iji. I've never heard of it, or even knew of it's existence before yesterday. However, after having a friend rave about it, I did a bit of research myself into this game, and discovered:
- Iji is a Swedish made game, not Japanese, despite the name!
- It was made using a program called Game Maker, which is apparently an extremely versatile program, though I've never used it myself.
- Daniel Remar, the game's creator, did most of the work, though he had the help of other people for things such as music and voice acting (Yes! Actual voice acting!)
- Iji is a 2D game in the same vein as Cave Story, but with more RPG elements, and a deep story that has to be seen to believed.
- Bitchin' music, yo!
I'm definitely going to try this game out!

Post FC Report (It's a doozy)
General | Posted 17 years agoWelp, here it is, MY post-FC report, and forgive me if it's a bit cynical, I feel a bit snappy after a few fuck-ups that took place during the con (none of them done by me, ironically)
Friday: Well, I was late arriving at the con due to having to be ABSOLUTELY sure about having everything packed. There was nothing really going on much. I saw
sohjin twice while I was sitting at the computer, chatting. Now, to preempt anyone who tries to ask me what I was doing online at a con: Shut the ever-loving fuck up, you fucking douchebags. I do NOT want to hear it. There was nothing going on in terms of panels, and I cannot just go up to a random person and start chatting with them. That never works in real life, it doesn't work at a con. And why didn't I talk to Sohjin? Because he had his posse with him and they looked all fine and dandy without me sticking my nose into their little closed social circle. That's fucking rude. Plus, we haven't spoken in over a year.
Don't help that I don't live anywhere near his beaner ass, nor is he online to chat with, and the fact I got nothing in common with him anymore.
....okay got that out of my system.
Saturday: Eh, went into the dealer's room, made my purchases (porn mags, a badge, and nice piece of quality paperback literature). Met
firondraak,
krahnos,
zenmigawa...trying to remember....no one else that especially stands out. However, it's now apparent how badly this con is being run. Several events are falling behind, the hotel service is crap (we asked for towels in the morning...and we NEVER got them; this was apparently a common complaint), and for some reason, despite it being in the con book AND the schedule, the guy from staff at the game room had NO CLUE there was a Brawl tourney. And thus, no sign-up sheet. Also, the Guitar Hero tourney was flat-up cancelled. Even the fursuit parade was late! Well, this is the last year at this hotel. On the plus side, I got photos of this awesome Lucario suiter. Also, I went to the Klingon Party and got suitably buzzed, also went and drank sake till 5am with
nek0gami The man is fucking awesome. Also got to meet
yodafire and
dark-chaos Ironically, DC does remind me of Jukka :P
Sunday: Last day. More aimless wandering. I do that a lot. It's hard to find people when it's ONE person amidst thousands, so I spend my time either lounging in my room, or just walking around like a lost zombie in the crowd. Really, I was getting sick of it. Still, I got to see the movie Juno up in my room before I left. I really have to thank
midekai for letting me room with him, the man is a fucking sweetheart of the highest degree. On the drive home I chatted with
tkc2021 on the phone, bless his soul, to alleviate my Post-FC Depression that always kicks in.
Eh, it wasn't my best con, hell, FC has lost it's charm after my first two visits. Next year, definitely getting my own damn room!

Here at FC
General | Posted 17 years agoAnd no clue what I should do...I'm just kinda wandering, or I was. Also, I once again as that same feeling as last time, that feeling of being alien, of a foreigner is a foreign place. I see people I know, that I've talked to online, or have seen at a previous FC.
I just need to get up the courage to reintroduce myself without falling head-first into an awkward moment ._.
Fat chance of that.
I saw
tora and
tremorwolf but couldn't bring myself to say hi. I mean, it's been at least a year since I last saw either of them, longer since I ever said hi, online or otherwise. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Oh well... >_< I did say hi to
voln at least.

General | Posted 17 years agoI will be going. Thank you everyone who talked in my last journal. I'll see you after the weekend!
Should I go to FC or not? I'd like your opinion
General | Posted 17 years agoSo, here's the situation as it stands for FC:
I found out from a friend, that if I want to go, I can room with him, but it'll cost me about $120-150. I need to ask him why it's so much. Did he get a room at an Embassy Suites or something? o_O Also, this /isn't/ counting any other expenses, like food, or wanting to buy things in the dealer's room.
Also, if I go, I will likely NOT buy an FC badge, because I'll only be there Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, aprox. 2 days. Not long enough to warrant an extra 50 dollar expenditure just to get into the dealer's room and a few panels. If I really want something from the dealer's room, I could always just get someone to buy it for me. Or just avoid all the NC-17 stuff :P
Now that the expenses are out of the way, here's my budget:
I got 500 dollars for Christmas
I've spent about 90-100 dollars so far (not sure, have to check my notes)
Going to FC will cost me about HALF of that.
Do you guys think this is worth the cost or not? I would /really/ like to go, especially since I graduate from college in March, and then I'm moving out, so who knows where I'll be next year. Do you guys think the benefits outweigh the cost? Would you go to FC, if you were in my place?

The World Ends With You
General | Posted 17 years agoWelp, I beat the game last night. God /damn/ was it hard. I didn't think Draco Cantus would possibly be that hard! Took me 4 tries to finally get a strategy down. That, and a little help from my brother. Same with the Uzuki/Kariya double fights. Those two are a pain in the butt!
BUT, I do feel a little proud of myself. How is that, you say?
I managed to beat Sho Minamimoto in his Taboo Form, when you're normally supposed to get your ass kicked and lose. Score one piece of Dark Matter, bitches! My brother was right though, thank god for Sweet Talk Tether and Lightning Rage.

FA Rank (And what it /really/ means!)
General | Posted 17 years agoOkay guys, this is what it really means, so you cockfags out there might stop bitching about how dumb it is, how lame the whole thing is.
The rank merely gives the percentage chance that someone visiting FA will find your page based on following random links. THAT'S. ALL. It says nothing about how popular you are or whether people even like your work. It just says how likely it is a person can find you my clicking randomly!
Geeze, and you folks are ranting on and on about how bad it is, and how much it makes people out to be attention whores. Really, it was just made by someone who was curious to see how likely it was to be found on FA. He wasn't doing it for attention, or because he thought he was popular, or wanted to be more popular. He's probably just a math major who was curious to see what would happen to use the same algorithm that Google uses.
So really people, GET OVER IT.

Someone bought my doujinshi!! ;_;
General | Posted 17 years agoYou know that journal
victoriaviper did that talked about a Mewtwo x Ganondorf doujinshi comic book?
Someone bought it ;_; And here I was hoping to actually own something like that, not just surf the net for scans! Bastards! *cries*
....Okay, somewhat better now. Maybe with any luck I'll find another or something.

To all you PCA'ers
General | Posted 17 years agoI've wondered something about the Wiki that we have. I know that the Wiki is good for putting down movelists and bios...but, perhaps we could do something like an actual Wiki does for characters? You know, like the characters can have a full page for a profile, not just a tiny space.
I dunno, I was looking at the character bios for an anime of mine on Wikipedia, and noticed this. I just thought it was something to bring up.
Oh yeah, and just so you have something to look forward to...I'm doing a PCA Fact Sheet for Darius.
That is all.

General | Posted 17 years agodraggor3k (4:12:46 AM): Also, you suck at come ons, you suck at scening, and you're a joke on the muck. People groan when you show up, and complain behind your back when you hit on every fucking thing that moves.

draggor3k is offline and will receive your IMs when signing back in.
ShadowFromFF3 (4:13:01 AM): *laughs* Well, look who left first?
Welp, I just got trolled last night. That there's the final excerpt from it. Kinda interesting really. First time being trolled and all. Oh yeah, the Muck he's referring to, Tapestries. Yes, moan and groan as much as you like, but I go there.
Not that I honestly give a shit about what he thinks. I mean really, he's just mad because I spent the entire time destroying his arguement, while sat there ranting and raving. I admit, I should've shut the window down, would've been the smart thing, but I thought perhaps we (Yes, we. He hated me using that word, implied some "union" in his mind apparently) might have a calm reasonable discussion.
Oh well, some people just can't take what they dish out. :P You'd think he'd at least be somewhat civil and say goodnight. *snickers*
Anyway, I've got to catch some Zs for my midterm tomorrow at 12:10! Wish me luck!

Pokemon Remixes
General | Posted 17 years agoI was browsing Youtube some time ago, and came across a man who did a few remixes of tunes from various Pokemon games. And these aren't like any of the other remixes you see on the net either!
No, this stuff is seriously some of the best shit you will ever hear. If you like Pokemon, the games, or just like some interesting music, you seriously owe it to yourself to go and listen to this guy's stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/user/PokeRemixStudio
I'm not kidding, some of his stuff is just plain awesome. Most of it is leagues above some of the remixes out, but there's some that are just THAT GOOD! Case in point?
Temporal Tower Remix (PMD2)
Primal Dialga Remix (PMD2)
Just to name my top faves so far.

PCA Q&A - Fine, I give in :P
General | Posted 17 years agoI was going to try and avoid this, but I am curious to see what people have to ask them, not that I'm expecting much of a response, given how many people have been getting out all their questions on everyone else. But anyway, here is the list of characters:
Team Silhouette
Riou Hotaru (Lucario) Team Captain
Vosa Towaru (Lanturn)
Karon Alexander (Marowak)
Tidot Montgomery (Dragonair)
Team Millennium

And remember, three questions at a time please.

PCA Fact Sheet: Vosa Towaru
General | Posted 17 years agoHA! It's alive! ALIVE!!!!
*cough* Well, here it is, the sharply dressed, logical, analytical, and apparently smoking hot (ask Kompy and Kae) Lanturn, Vosa.
Home Life:
-Vosa is an only child, the sole offspring of father David Towaru and mother Cassandra Towaru.
-His father is the CEO of Deep Sea Bonds, a company dealing in stocks, bonds, and contracts. Basically, the company is a massive bank, which gives out loans and contracts for money to private business, as an investment.
-Anyone visiting the Towaru residence will notice the rather impersonal atmosphere. Most of the time, one or more of the parents isn’t present, and they do not act like a typical family, even when together.
-His mother works as the Assistant CEO of Deep Sea Bonds. Some people criticize the fact that they’re married, and both in top positions, and that their relationship was a conflict of interest. However, both manage to keep their relationship during work hours rather professional and no one will argue with their work ethic, or their results.
-Vosa has never questioned his parent’s decision not to have more kids beyond him, though he occasionally wishes he had a brother, or even a sister.
Personal Life
-Vosa’s idea of free time might be strange to some, but Vosa loves spending time analyzing fights, and adding/editing/refining his data on his laptop. He spends several hours a day working on his data.
-He also spends a great deal of time reading, mostly because he enjoys good works of literature. Of course, his reading doesn’t always include just works of fiction either, he likes reading science or math theories.
-His favorite food is the miso soup that Riou and his brother are capable of making. Before this, he never had a “favorite” food to speak of. The simplicity of the dish, and its flavor, however, caught his attention. It’s great for when he’s reading.
-Vosa walks from home to school, despite the fact his father has loaned him a car and a driver for him to use in getting around. Vosa would much rather walk, and get some exercise.
-Vosa is currently waiting to ask his father about getting a driver’s permit, so that perhaps he can start driving his friends around.
Love Life
-Vosa had never before shown any interest in women, or dating for that matter. It came as a surprise to his teammates when he told them of his intention to date Crossroads captain Meghan DeCinder.
-While Vosa is reluctant to admit they even exist, he has a small following of women at school his “fanclub”, who think that his cold impersonal manner and personality are the hottest thing since <insert current poketeen idol that girls rave over>. They tend to leave him strange notes and presents at his locker from time to time. While Vosa pays them no attention (in fact he typically ignores them altogether), they are not dissuaded by his lack of interest.
-Vosa has never been the most openly emotional or affectionate person, at least not in public. He’s always had a hard time, having been raised to keep a steady “poker face” going at all times. However, his teammates, and his girlfriend, have a very good idea of the kind of ‘Mon he really he is.
-Despite his best efforts to be a good boyfriend, Vosa is still learning the ropes of dating women, and unfortunately, still manages to get himself in trouble with Meg from time to time.
Misc Facts
- Vosa is seen as one of the school’s most promising and (arguably) its best combat analyst. His hard work and dedication to a thorough analysis has gotten him much respect from his teammates, and allowed them to pull off several key victories, despite the team being formed near the end of the freshman year.
- His main competition for the school’s best student analyst is a one CeeGee, a Porygon who is considered his often largest rival. Interestingly enough, she is now one of Team Silhouette’s alternates, leading to a few discussions online on the forum boards as to why she would team up with her rival.
- Recently, Vosa has begun offering analysis of teams to other students for use in formulating strategies at a price. No guarantees are made as to the effectiveness of the profiles and combat records in any strategies, but the extensive information and in-depth reviews of tactics and attacks make the offer very attractive. However, for as many students that have wanted to purchase this information, just as many claim the practice as being unfair and undermining the many principles of the Academy itself. However, as his business is not illegal, Vosa continues his work.
- He has little skill in hand-to-hand combat, enough to get by. However, Vosa is quite proud of his marksmanship, and has a ranged fighter, he excels. However, he's currently training under Elizabeth to make himself better at close-range. He's learning a defensive style, to keep himself safe while still giving him the availability of his ranged attacks.

General | Posted 18 years agoAm I the only one who isn't going to giving Nek0 Gami congrats for some sucker willing to give up 3k(!!!) for a piece of his art?!
Honestly, I have nothing against the guy as an artist, his has a nice style (even if the content often doesn't float my boat...) but for the love of god, who in their right mind is willing to shell out 3k for a piece of paper with some art on it. There are nooooooo artists on FA worth that kinda cash.
But then I've been kinda biased against NG for the fact his comission rates are almost ten times what other artists are willing to do. Ususally the money you charge is based on the cost of materials and labor. But since when is a range from 150 to 250 bucks actually based on your time or effort?
I'm sorry, no matter how good your art is, I won't ever pay that much money. For that much cash I could get 4 color pieces from several artists of equal quality, or at least comparable quality. Why would you choose to charge that much to begin with? Because you know people will want it badly enough that they'll pay that much? If so, that seems kinda underhanded. If it's too discourage people from spamming for comissions, than do what every other artist does.
Make a comission list. Accept only so many at a time. I don't see the need to charge up to a third of a person's paycheck for a piece of art, of which they'll likely never see the print of.

Guilty Pleasure
General | Posted 18 years agoI just recently reacquired a love for an old anime that I watched as a kid...and it might surprise some of you:
Sailor Moon.
That's right, I use to watch Sailor Moon as a kid, on Toonami, back when the only things on were Thunder Cats, Ronin Warriors, Dragonball Z, and Reboot (though I loathe to call Reboot an anime :P)
After some mindless scanning of Youtube, I came across the coolest scene from the last arc of SM, SM: Stars. I remember as a child having to use the internet to watch that arc, because it wasn't allowed in the US. It involves one of the show's most badass fights, Starlights versus Sailor Galaxia.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXmA.....eature=related
Seriously, badass music, plus combined attacks, culminating in the first of only TWO successful attacks against the bad guy, both of which occur only during this fight. Seriously, in that last battle, people died left and right, and shit kept blowing up.
Then, I found what has to be best remaking of that last fight, in what I would consider one of the best ways to do that final battle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8VO.....eature=related
It starts around 1:25, and ends around 5:15. Yeah, almost 4 straight minutes of one of the coolest looking sequences ever put together. This is definitely one way the episode could've gone.
I admit, saying how much I <3'ed this show might make me seem seriously gay, but damn, back in the day it was the best shit on, and I won't deny how much ass it kicked. I still love it.

PCA Meme Lovechild: Riou's Fact Sheet
General | Posted 18 years agoSwiped from
kompy since she poked me into doing so. I think this would actually be very revealing, at least in terms of the character that EVERYONE seems most interested in (That's you, Riou!)
HOWEVER...in light of just how much raw info there is, especially on Riou, (I actually fully developed him as a character, and then built his team around him) I am going to do an offshoot meme, in which each individual member will recieve their own fact sheet. Because honestly, 5 facts is just not enough.
Without Further ado...
Riou Hotaru:
Home Life:
-Riou's family is HUGE. Really f'king big. Because the Lucario species is predominantly male, the family has a policy of having large numbers of offspring in order to increases the chances of female offspring. Also, because of this focus on breeding, homosexuality is frowned upon quite heavily, in men and women, not only as a social stigma, but because it produces no offspring.
-Riou has an arranged marriage bride waiting for him back at home. They met as kids, and only she remembers him. She was set up to be his wife, so that when he finished his education at PCA, she would marry him. In their country, marriage is legal as young as 16, which may produce issues if the family decides to wed Riou sooner, rather than later.
-He is the only member of his family to rebel against the fighting tradition. In fact, the only members of his family who support his choice are his mother and grandparents, all of whom see the focus on fighting as making the family stagnant. Unfortunately, this faction constitutes about 1% of his entire family.
-Riou is the only person aware of his eldest brother Issen's nature as a Shadow Pokemon, or that Issen may have killed a fair number of people. Unfortunately, not only does his family not believe any of his claims, but Issen is aware that Riou knows.
-Despite an overwhelming fear of Issen, Riou respects his eldest brother for his skills, and wishes he could fight as well. Ironically, Riou could be even better than Issen, if he focused himself.
Personal Life:
-Riou has a bit of a green thumb himself. He cares for a number of small Bonsai plants at home, and even offered one to the Art Teacher. It actually sits on her desk right now, and Riou has instructed her on how to take care of it.
-Riou and his teammates actually form a small band. They started playing at the end of Freshman year, and are actually quite good. Tidot has tried numerous times to convince Riou they should play at a school event, dance, or for the talent contest. Riou is against this out of stage fright.
-He always makes sure to address others by the proper honorific. It's extremely rare that he refers to anyone by just their name, because culturally speaking, that denotes great familiarity. Riou won't even refer to his own teammates by their names alone.
-Riou has a particular fondness for art. He excels at calligraphy, and several of his works are up in Art class on the walls. He doesn't like to boast about his skill, but he always tries to go above and beyond the assignments he's given.
-Riou is known to visit a shop in Downtown Viridian, a small antique shop dealing with occult artifacts and other esoteric goods, run by a Mewtwo female named Elizabeth, who is also one of his former teachers.
School Life:
-Riou is, academically speaking, one of the top 10 rank students among all students, along with his teammate, Vosa. This is unusual, since the list is predominant filled with juniors and seniors. However, this list is purely regarding academia, not battle records.
-Riou's teamed formed in the middle of Freshman year, during the Midterm Exams. Riou was forced to either join a team, or form his own. Reluctant to join any of the teams present at the time, Riou haphazardly put together his own team, and managed to score several consecutive victories. His team is regarded as one of the most balanced teams in the Academy.
-Riou attempted to run for Student Council during his freshman year, but this ultimately failed when he found he was too shy to give speeches, or lacked the organizational skills or manpower to set up a campaign. Vosa has urged him to try again this year, since he has the Lanturn's skills on his side.
-In Art, Drama, Music, and English, Riou is quite outspoken, at least to the teacher, eager to assist or to demonstrate his skills. This contrasts with the rest of his schooltime, during which he's quiet shy, and generally withdrawn.
-Riou has personally defeated each member of his own team, and has never lost to any of them. He is regarded as the strongest in most categories on his team. Despite this, he has constant concerns over his ability as Captain.
Love Life:
-Riou's homosexuality, stems from the fact he had little contact or interaction with women as he was growing up, and his training classes consisted of entirely men. This is common in his family (explained in a later fact), however Riou is the ONLY Hotaru who has a preference for the male gender. The rest of his family is entirely heterosexual.
-Riou is a virgin in the literal sense. He has never engaged in any sexual activity including self-pleasure and mastrubation.
-As a follow-up, Riou is also extremely sexually repressed. This is because of the fact that Aura carries not only feelings and emotions, but also thoughts. Any member in his family who read his Aura would pick up on the nature of his sexual urges/desires/impulses/fantasies/etc., and thus has has had to suppress them almost completely, to avoid being found out.
-Riou also has had no sexual education. The Hotaru's all private tutor their offspring, and believe that sex ed is a determent and a distraction to training, saving such education for when the children are around 16 to 18, using intensified training regimens to vent hormones. Riou was shipped to PCA before he could recieve sex ed, which may have been on purpose.
-Riou considers his homosexuality something of a sin. Cultural stigmas, combined with family tradition, has given Riou the impression his desires are something wrong, morally abhorent, and/or dirty. He is unaware right now of the fact there are other students who share his orientation, and he goes to great lengths to hide the fact that he's gay.
-Riou desires a relationship more based around intimacy and affection, rather than sex. This stems from the fact that during his childhood, he recieved very little affection from his parents or siblings, due to his deviance from tradition.
Misc Facts/Quirks:
-Riou suffers from severe self-confidence issues, stemming from the dismissial he recieved from his family and his being sent to PCA being portrayed as a punishment/exile for his failing to live up to Hotaru standards. This lack of confidence has wormed it's way into almost every aspect of himself, though he puts on a public face of being just fine. His inability to approach Boris is a prime example, because he feels himself unworthy of even the notice of his upper-classman.
-Despite this, Riou has excellent fighting potential, and is known for coming up with creative variants and combinations of attacks. Due to the versatility of his species, he is capable of combining moves in ways that weren't capable of being done before.
-Riou (like Vosa) has developed a small fan-following of same and lower-classman women, who find his kindly, shy, polite mannerisms adorable, and his manner of dress to be all very attractive. Riou has not the heart (or desire) to tell them their attentions will never produce the results they want.
-Also, Riou (like Vosa), loves to wear his formal business suit attire. While most would find such clothing uncomfortable for casual wear, Riou finds it quite comfortable and easy for him to wear it, even during battle. Despite the relaxed stance on the dress code the school has, all of Riou's clothing is quite formal in appearance.

General | Posted 18 years agoCorrection, FC is a NO GO
General | Posted 18 years agoI must apologize to those expecting to see me this weekend. I will NOT make it to FC this year. Turns out I've got two important essays to work on this weekend, due Monday, and when I say important, I mean they're a decent chunk of my grade, so I cannot afford to be gone most of the weekend.
Also, I have barely any money as it is. So I figured, save what I got, and wait till next year.
