Mike’s Handy Tips for Comic Conventions.
General | Posted 14 years agoThe first ever comic convention I went to, I had no idea what to expect. I booked a table, was full of beans and even had my friend from Birmingham over to give me moral support but if there’s one thing I took from that day, it’s that you can’t book a table at a comic con if you don’t have any comics to sell. For some bizarre reason, I thought it would be okay if I just arrived with some prints of some drawings. How wrong I was.
However, I did learn something on that first day and that the best thing about any comic con is to talk to people. I enjoyed spending possibly ten minutes or more chatting to people whether they were coming to my table, or I was visiting theirs. I made quite a few new friends and some that I’m still in touch with today.
The next year was different, I had worked hard and created a black and white version of Steve & Bob (with some additional strips thrown in as a bonus). This was a very, very good idea. They were flying off the table and people were naturally curious about this one product. The problem was that a lot of people were scared to pick it up because they thought it was a furry. And by furry, I mean a dog shagging a mouse. Wrong. WRONG! But I couldn’t change their opinions about this, it was obvious that a lot of people just were not interested in a Garfield inspired strip. Thus the motivation to create an idea that was swimming in my head for quite a while now, I had to start making Elemental Micah.
Before creating Elemental Micah though, I created issue two of Steve & Bob. Much to my dismay, the next year it really didn’t sell that well at all. In fact, issue one was always going to be the big seller. It had the better cover AND it was issue one, the beginning of everything!
A few years had gone past and I had several comics now, I hadn’t made anymore Steve & Bobs, but by now I had Elemental Micah 1, 2 and 3. As predicted, issue 1 was the best seller just because it was the first story. It does bug me that it does so well because knowing the stories so well, I know issue two is the better story of the three so I often push that a lot more. Intriguingly, if you’re going to put a semi-naked man on the cover of issue 3, that is going to scare a lot of people off. Luckily I didn’t print a lot of issue 3, so when that sells out I might go for a more conventional cover.
It helps to have items that I call, “Little and Large”. Little things are like badges, badges can save your life at these cons, especially if they are quirky and fun. If you know someone with a badge machine, make friends, compliment their rather dapper sideburns and say how great my, er, their comics are! Large things are things like prints and plushies. Prints are good because there is always someone who will like your style and would like something big to put on their wall. I wouldn’t recommend buying a lot of prints straight away as you will be stuck with them for a long, long time (and chances are, in a few years time, your art style will change), but some simple yet good quality A3 prints will always pip someone’s interest and make your table look vastly more diverse. I’m lucky in that my mother is a seamstress (and a pretty damn good one at that!) so when I mentioned the idea of creating plushies, she said no straight away. Then a few months later, yes. Plushies are great to have on the table because they will always, ALWAYS cost more than your comics. If you have something that costs more than your comics, and it seems justified, then it seems reasonable to spend two quid on something you can read on the train back home.
Little things for those that only want to spend 50p, big things to make your comics seem like a damn good deal.
It’s harder now to be a comic artist than it ever has been at a comic convention I find because people simply don’t want to part with their money. There was a time when people would save up their money a few months before hand just to buy their favourite indy comic artist’s stuff, but I’ve found lately that people go to have a look and then meander off. I don’t know why, but the enthusiasm seems to have diminished from the comic goers.
So if you’re going to book a table and sell your stuff, my advice is “bring back the enthusiasm!” You’ve got to grab anyone who looks at your table intrigued, talk to them, put a comic in their hand and tell them what it’s about while they’re flicking through. Get their interest up, make them care about the industry as well as the strange stories you have created!
While it’s good to create a continuing story for your comic and while people ask you, “When is the next issue going to come out?” having more than issue one on your table isn’t necessarily a good idea. If you have too many things on your table, people will get confused and intimidated. Their first thought will be, “Oh no, they’re going to try and sell me everything on their table!” Be very wary of this. Focus on one issue at a time. The less choice someone has to make, the more likely they’re going to read your stuff.
One last thing, don’t go to these conventions hoping to make money. You never will if you go with that attitude. Go there to talk to people. Find out a bit about who they are, why they came today, what sort of stories are they into. And chat to other artists too, it’s a great boost to make a connection with other people who are also struggling at their own table. Also, OFFER SWAPSIES! There is nothing more important that reading other comics, so offer to swap your comic with other tables. A lot of them will say no, but really the whole point of selling your stories is to share your stories. And who knows, you might get a new fan out of it!

Bloody Cockroaches! Pt.2
General | Posted 15 years agoThe other night, I woke up at about 6am as my bowels were a-stirring. I don't know why, but I had a feeling to put the light on. There, scuttling on the floor, under my computer desk was a cockroach! I was desperate for the loo, so I left it there for now and went in the bathroom when I saw another one! Bowels be damned, I was going to get it while it didn't know I was there! I grabbed my Rentokil Insectrol spray, quietly walked into the bathroom and gave the little bastard a face full of insecticide. Since I have an irrational and utterly incontrollable fear of cockroaches, I went to grab the Hoover, when I saw the one that was under the computer desk scuttle away. I grabbed the spray, but it had run out! So Henry the Hoover sucked and sucked, but he could nab that cockroach, so I went into the bathroom to suck up the dead one. If that wasn't enough, the door of the shower opened up and to my utter horror, a seven foot cockroach walked out, clicking furiously, with it's impossibly strong hind legs. It swiped at my face and created a mighty gash upon my cheek (I may well be scarred for life), but I knew I was in trouble now, it had the scent of blood. It swiped again and I swung the nozzle of the Hoover just in time to stop it. It clicked loudly and sickly, swishing it’s antennas as though it was whipping it’s hair back and forth, it's evil red eyes penetrating my very soul, I had to end this fast. I grabbed Henry while he was still on and swung it at it's hideous, unnatural face. It fell to the floor, rolling slightly at the curvature of it's back, so I grabbed Henry and proceeded to pummel it in the face, the stench of it's innards goo, splashed upon my face as with everyone of my mighty roars, I smashed it to pieces. When I felt secure enough to think it was finally dead, I grabbed Henry's nozzle and hoovered up the little dead cockroach I killed earlier. Suddenly, a pincer out of nowhere swiped at Henry, smashed him to pieces and the Hoover bag exploded all over the bathroom floor. It was still alive! It swiped furiously for me. It carelessly swiping the tube for the shower and water poured everywhere. It hissed and spat at me as it rose up, blood and goo pouring out of it's eyes. Then I saw it, the cable for the Hoover was on the floor next to me. The water from the shower had now spread to it's unnatural feet. I grabbed the cable and threw it at the water. Blue sparks erupted from what seemed to be everywhere. The insect shuddered and spluttered and smoke arose from it's back, it's fallen intestines burnt to a crisp. It collapsed to the floor and this time I knew it was dead. The police and the army came to clean up the mess. There were rumours of nuclear waste mutating insects to gargantuan proportions, but this was abnormal. That was a night I'll never forget and that was the night I became a man.

General | Posted 15 years agoGAH! I'm sick of them! I kill one, and then I see another one today in the kitchen!
AAARGH!!!
That said, how are you?
Are you enjoying the Mass Effect doodles? How about the random Elemental Micah stuff? Do you miss Steve & Bob? How would you feel about a Dave Duff comic?

Chicken Pox
General | Posted 15 years agoSo yeah, I have Chicken Pox. Apparently that thing about getting them when you're young so you don't have to get them again when you're older is a total myth. I blame Dr. Hilary Jones.
I'm going to be home bound for the next week so I don't spread my disease to the pregnant, elderly or infirm. Also my head's spinning and I've just put Calamine lotion in some intimate areas of my body.
So yeah, I apologise in advance for being crap.
Any notes of sympathy, love and virtual hugs are always welcome.
ps: I was going to take a picture of my face, but after I just looked in the mirror, I just screamed. I used to be so beautiful!

Commission Information and Price List
General | Posted 15 years agoCommission Status is open! Send me a note!
Commission Information
Howdy gang, now I’m always up for a challenge, but sorry, I’m just not drawing porn. I don’t like the idea of spending hours working on pictures where I have to stare at a gratuitous sex scene. That said, I am a bit partial to a bit of burlesque and a cheeky reveal here or there, but nothing too gratuitous unless it is otherwise justified and you’re really nice about it. Everything else, just ask! Send me a note and I’ll note you back with smiles and hugs.
All prices are the basic rate just to give you an idea. Depending on the complexity or the time it takes to do the drawing, I may charge more (but I’m a reasonable person, so it can’t hurt to ask). Things like detail and the number of characters will affect the overall price. Also everything is in English pounds, which ironically, sounds like a name of a great porno film...
Also I won’t draw Lady Gaga. I don’t care if she’s got a pelican on her head, it ain’t happening!
Rough Line Art - Nope
Sorry, I won’t do it. It’s just a waste of time to do something that won’t look fabulous.
Site Avatars: £5
I’ll do something at roughly 500 by 500 pixels which you can keep, take home and show to your mates and say, ‘See? Look! Woo!’ but if you just want 100 by 100, that’s fine. I’ll even throw that in if you like
Inked Line Art: £8+
Depends on image and it’s level of detail
Detailed or simplified, depends on your tastes, with sharp lines that’d make you glad your monitor is better than HD.
Partial Colour: £15 +
Depending on image and it’s level of detail
A colour character with subtle background. Price varies on the complexity of the character and the shading you’d like thrown in.
Full Colour: £35 +
Again, depends on image and it’s level of detail
A detailed, high resolution image. Of course, the more complex it is, the higher the price. Trust me, if you’ve seen some of my high quality colour stuff, you’ll know you’ll be getting some good stuff here!
This will be a detailed digital high resolution image file. The more complex the image gets the higher the price will be.
So, yeah, send me a note and I’ll see what I can do. I’ve worked on a daily comic before so I’m pretty quick and drawing and feel free to have a look through my gallery http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/mhg/1/ or on my portfolio site, http://www.mikedraws.co.uk . Lots of mixed stuff, from animal type creatures in Steve & Bob, to human characters in Elemental Micah to even a cartoon milk float!

Merry Christmas!
General | Posted 15 years agoI had so many ideas for skins for the S&B site for Christmas. One was having Shelly kneeling on the floor, naked and covered in blood, looking at her blood covered hands with horror in her eyes and the phrase next to her saying 'MERRY CHRISTMAS!'
Another was a sleeping Radox in bed with Santa's giant hand hovering over him as he slept.
And of course there was Razor Ray Gun kicking an elf in the guts.
Maybe next year, but until then, Merry Christmas and I'm looking forward to a new and interesting year. I have a few plans in progress that'll make me more active on this affinity of fur.
Have a great day and remember, Christmas is about receiving, so what did you get this year?

General | Posted 15 years agoAny writers out there?
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm flush with excitement of late. Two new reviews for Elemental Micah is very exciting! I was wondering, if there are any bloggers or writers out there, if you're interested in reading the first three issues of Elemental Micah, would you write a review of them? I'm not talking about a one line review, I'm talking at least three full, voluptuous paragraphs. The feedback I've got so far has been great and I'd like to add some quotes to the site, so if you're interested, let me know!

A less vague Elemental Micah website
General | Posted 15 years agohttp://www.elementalmicah.com
It needed an update as it was woefully out of date. Also, as much as I wanted to minimise it and make it look posh and contemporary, it just didn't work. So now, those pictures that I've been showing the past few days? Scroll down the website and you'll see a character section. Click on a head and you get a little description of the character (Alfonzo is still my favourite!).
There's also a little bit telling you who Elemental Micah is, but the big thing is the comic cover tabs. Click on them and you'll see previews of issue one, some pages I've never shown online of issue two and very, VERY few pages of issue 3. I didn't want to show too much of ish three as a few pages in and you're in spoiler territory.
Have a look, play with the buttons, and let me know what you think.
Cheers!
http://www.elementalmicah.com is the website in case I didn't wake that clear enough at the beginning! :-D

Surge!
General | Posted 15 years agoYou wait 6 months for a doodle and nothing comes up. Then one day, lots appear all at the same time!
Well, just to prove I have been a bit too busy lately, here's a selection of doodles I've been doing lately...
The Mighty Jambo!
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4526024
Something I did for a online mate of mine. His webcomic is called The Mighty Jambo and if you've got a spare mo or two, have a looksee at http://notregret.com/jambo (and let him know I sent you!)
Concept for issue 3 cover.

Some ideas I was playing with, but I had a better idea. Thus leading to...
Final Cover for Elemental Micah 3
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4526037
Here's the final design of the cover of Elemental Micah 3. Yes, it is a bit emo, but it's also a bit saucy.
The Boys, Re-jigged
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4526043
I wanted to put the boys in my portfolio, but I couldn't put them in there the way I had submitted them before, so I re-organised them so they'd look more dynamic in my A3 book.
Teaser for Comics to come!
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4526049
A project which I'm working on with Jimi May. This was something I made as a teaser that'll feature in issue 3 of Elemental Micah.
Well, there they are! Let me know what you think pretty boys and girls. Pretty pictures for you to oggle at.

A project which I'm working on with Jimi May. This was something I made as a teaser that'll feature in issue 3 of Elemental Micah.
Well, there they are! Let me know what you think pretty boys and girls. Pretty pictures for you to oggle at.

Anyone fancy seeing something made by the makers of Earthworm Jim?

Mike reviews Scott Pilgrim
General | Posted 15 years agoIt's okay. Not great. I put blame in part to the trailers that I've been watching so much that I know them like the back of my hand. You know, it's one of those movie trailers which pretty much explains what the entire film is about so you don't need to go out and see it? It's one of those. The funniest parts of the film (well I assumed as much since people laughed the hardest during those bits) were clipped in the trailer, so I found it very hard to laugh at something I had already seen several hundred times.
It was nice though being transported in another world were life is like a computer game, and the fight scenes really did have the feel of a dance routine. Which I really liked. And there was some actual real life issues hidden in the story (I know she's the one, but is she really?) and being very much a character writer, I did appreciate the varying degrees of insanity and ludicrously of the baddies compared to the band mate who wants to make it big and the flat mate cynical promiscuity.
So yeah, I liked it. a tad predictable, but nicely unpredictable in places.
What did you think of Scott Pilgrim vs the World?
