The MFM Tiger Haven Auction Needs Your Donations!
Posted 13 years agoWe hope that some day Tiger Haven won’t be in the business of rescuing abused and neglected big cats but sadly that day has not come. Each year they have to rescue more and more and do what very few are able to do, give them a safe place to live out their lives. Each year we have many wonderful items donated and this year we need your help!
Donations have already started coming in for the Tiger Haven Charity Auction! I hope that you are also thinking about what you could give to help our charity. Now while everyone is cleaning out their closets is the time to keep a look out for great items for the auction. Even if you are unsure about making it to the auction you can ship things to me (Princess B) and I'll get them there for you. I have recently had to move so contact me for the correct address. If you just can't find anything awesome to donate then start saving up now and plan to be there and buy some of the great things you are sure to see.
The auction is only possible by your help, and the kitties need you! See you there!
Tiger Haven is a safe haven for big cats. Tiger Haven rescues large cats such as lions, tigers, and panthers from all over the United States. These big cats may be anything from older circus or zoo cats, to cats that were obtained illegally or were neglected or abused. Once these cats have been rescued by Tiger Haven, they have a forever home. Tiger Haven is a no kill shelter that does not sell or breed their cats.
Tiger Haven started with just one cat many years ago and has grown to over 250 big cats. All these cats require enclosures to live in, food and veterinary care. These costs add up and care for each cat costs thousands each year. Tiger Haven is a nonprofit organization, which means that they rely on donations from caring individuals. The auction held each year at Mephit Fur Meet is often the largest single contributor to Tiger Haven. Beyond the normal care for the big cats, the money raised at MFM has built multiple enclosures for Tiger Haven. These are nice enclosures that become a forever home for a big cat in need.
Tiger Haven is located in eastern Tennessee and usually affords MFM a couple of their long time workers to be with us at MFM and at the charity auction. This is not a nameless, faceless organization that we are blindly helping. These workers will happily answer any questions you have about Tiger Haven. These people work hard everyday to ensure these big cats have a safe and comfortable home for life.
Money or items donated to the charity auction held every year at MFM all go directly to Tiger Haven to be used to help these big cats in need. These big cats cannot personally thank you but their appreciation for their great care is seen everyday by the workers of Tiger Haven. On behalf of these big cats who now enjoy a safe home in the caring walls of Tiger Haven we wish to thank you for any help you can give. If you wish to ship an item it must be received by August 28, 2012

MFM 2012 Guest of Honor
Posted 13 years agoThe MFM 2012 Guest of Honor -
This year there were so many wonderful nominations. So many have done so much for Furry and the world at large and it’s hard for the decision to be made each year to pick just one.
This year’s GOH has been a part of the MFM family through thick and thin for 12 years now. Each year they become more and more involved in MFM and even though they don’t have to they make sure that the MFM family knows how much they mean to them. The core of furry are animals and I know no more devoted to that cause than this year’s MFM Guest of Honor
Debbie, Annette & Christine and the rest of the Tiger Haven Crew!

They have planned some very special things including Q&A and a Day in the life of Tiger Haven a/v Presentation

See below for booking instructions and special information - You MUST book your room directly with the hotel!
--=={ T-Shirt Contest }==--
PLEASE READ THESE RULES IN THEIR ENTIRETY BEFORE ENTERING.
The rules for 2011's T-Shirt Contest are:
1) What's up for grabs?
There are three chances for your artwork to be selected for MFM's T-Shirts.
Attendees Choice - The winner of the Attendees Choice will have their artwork featured on the front of the MFM T-Shirts. This is chosen by you, the attendees.
Director's Choice - The winner of the Director's Choice will be featured on the back of the MFM T-Shirt.
Staff Choice - This will be chosen by the staff and be featured on their staff shirts
2) Who is eligible to enter?
Everyone! To be fair to all artists, we are continuing the requirement this year that the winner of the previous year's Attendees Choice will not be eligible for this year's Attendees Choice. They will still be allowed to enter, and may be considered for either the Director's Choice or Staff Choice.
3) What do I submit?
The overall rating for the piece should be a "G" to "PG" rating - if you wouldn't wear it in your elderly grandmother's house, don't put it on your entry! The piece must feature a skunk as the main subject or subjects. It should also bear either "Mephit Fur Meet" or "MFM" as well as the year or corresponding anniversary number (i.e.: 2011 or 15). Entries that misspell the name of the convention will be disqualified.
Our theme this year is "Under construction, building a better MFM for the future"
For an entry to be eligible for voting, two versions of the entry MUST be submitted - one for display/voting, and a second, higher-resolution piece for use should that entry win or be selected for other use by a member of staff.
Display Piece: No more than 800 x 600, This display piece should not contain a signature to show who created this (We will go into more detail on this later). Artists need not worry about misuse of their artwork, as this piece will be watermarked by the staff as being an MFM T-Shirt Entry prior to being placed on the website for display. The "Display Piece" should be submitted as a .JPG or .GIF.
Final Piece: This will be the actual artwork used by our printing company to make the t-shirts, or the staff should your piece be used in any other function. This finished work SHOULD contain a signature which will appear on the t-shirt. The recommended dimensions are at least 10 inches high at 300 dots per inch or higher. The "Final Piece" should be submitted in Adobe Illustrator (.ai) format, although TIFF or EPS will also be acceptable. This is by request of our printer that it be sent as Illustrator format.
Both the display and the final piece must be black and white ONLY
(GRAYSCALE AND HALFTONED IMAGES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE, PERIOD).
When the artwork has been received, you will be notified within 72 hours that it was received. If you did not receive a notification within 72 hours, please do not resend your email, but instead a follow up to see if it was received and the administrator of the contest just plain forgot *grin*.
4) Display of artwork
Once again, we will be running a 'blind' contest. We will only display the title of the piece, not who the creator is. By doing this, we hope to make the contest fairer by making everyone choose the submission based upon the piece itself, not the artist. Voting will be the same as in previous years - commencing for one week, after which votes determined to be ineligible will be discarded and the design which gets the majority of valid votes will be the winner.
After voting has finished and the director's choice has been selected, the t-shirt entry page will be updated with the names of the artists who submitted each entry.
5) When do you need it?
Cutoff Date for Submitting Entries is 11:59 PM Central time on Saturday, July 9, 2011.
6) Where do we send it?
Please submit all entries to tshirt2011[at]mephitfurmeet.org
7) Other things.
Each artist may enter up to three pieces for inclusion in the contest. The administrator of the contest shall abstain from voting. The rules for voting will remain the same as in past years, where for a vote to be valid, the corresponding email address must be subscribed to one of Mephit Fur Meet's mailing lists. IP Addresses will be logged, and MFM reserves the right to disqualify multiple votes from the same IP.
8) Some stuff you need to know (Better read it, it affects you!)
By submitting an entry to the Mephit Fur Meet T-Shirt contest, you are granting Mephit Fur Meet and its parent corporation, Mid South and Tennessee Anthropomorphic Arts Association (MST3A) an irrevocable, non-exclusive license to use the entry for promotional purposes. The original creators of the work are permitted to use the work in their own portfolios and promotions. Mephit Fur Meet and MST3A reserve the right to review all entries and not allow any entry that it deems inappropriate (i.e.: drug/alcohol references, violent or sexual content, or possible trademark/copyright violations).
MFM shall in no way be responsible for entries that are lost in transit, either via email or postal service. If we do not receive an entry before an established cutoff date, the entry will not be included in the contest. Also, if you do not submit both required versions, your entry will not be included.

In this roundtable discussion, participants ask questions, and active participation is encouraged.
--=={ Gaming Information }==--
Wanna come out and play? This year's gaming track will have lots of opportunities for you to play your favorite games and learn some new ones as well. We will have lots of games (board, card, strategy, etc.) but you are welcome to bring your own as well. Apples to Apples and Red Dragon Inn were big hits last year. I think Slugfest Games will have the 3rd version of Red Dragon Inn out, so we can have a 12 person game! We are also working on bringing back some video gaming. The ideas right now are a Rock Band Battle and a set time to meet those who have a PSP/DS. Please email if you have suggestions.
Looking for an opportunity to gain volunteer hours during the convention? Come demonstrate or run a game in the gaming lounge. You don't have to be a "Game Master", just have a willingness and patience to show others how to play. We will also be looking for people to help with the Poker Tourney and to watch the room when we might need a break.
Also, we will be continuing the annual Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament to benefit Tiger Haven. Look for information in the future about how to sign up and help us raise money for the kitties. We are also looking for donations for prizes, so if you have something in mind (artists and dealers in particular), email either caritas_skunk[at]windstream.net or demariana@gmail.com.
--=={ Fursuits, Fursuits, Fursuits!!! }==-
We have no better hotel than at MFM for Fursuits! All of the hotel floors have ramp access!! No elevators if you don't want to use them! August 30, 2010: Last day to request a membership rollover to next year or a membership transfer.
Registration FAQ:
Why are prices higher this year?
Just like everyone, our costs have been increasing too. Unfortunately, since registration is where we get 95% of our budget, some of the costs have to be past on to the attendees. This is our first hike since before 2001 and we are always striving to make sure we make the most of every dollar that our attendees give us!
Are membership refundable?
Memberships are refundable up to the end of preregistration. After preregistration, we have to make orders for the convention, so your money will be spent at that point. If you wish to request a membership refund, please email registration. Your membership will be fully refunded, minus any service charge we incur in processing it. Rolled over membership and voluneteer membership are not refundable.
Can memberships be rolled over til next year?
You may request that your membership be rolled over for one year. This must be requested before the Wednesday before the convention. Previously rolled over memberships and voluneteer memberships may not be rolled over. If you wish to request a membership rollover, please email registration.
What happens if I can not attend and don't request a refund or rollover?
Any membership packets not claimed at the door during the convention will be mailed, free of charge, to the mailing address provided to us when you registered. This will happen about a month after the convention.
I can't make it this year, but I have a friend who can. Can he have my membership?
Memberships are transferable up to the Wednesday before the convention. You are responsible for any money transfer involved and once you request a transfer, it will not be undone. This means, make sure you trust your friend to pay your or have the money in hand before requesting a transfer. Also, we will not act as a matchmaker, you must have the person's information before you request the transfer. If you wish to request a membership transfer, please email registration with the informaiton of the person to transfer it to. Please note that they are not guarenteed to have a tshirt in their size if their size differes from yours if the request is made after August 1. Membership transfers will not take place at the convention.
I have multiple names. Can I have multiple conbadges with my different names?
No. Only one badge will be issued per membership. The badge if your admission ticket to the convention.
What forms of payment do you accept?
For preregistration, cash (only if given in person), personal check, money order, PayPal, or credit cards (through PayPal). For onsite, currently cash, personal check, money order or travelers check. We may be adding credit card processing, so please check back later.
I'm under 18, can I attend?
All minors will be issued a red badge to show that they are minors. If you are 16 or 17, you may attend if you have your parent's permission. They must fill out and have noterized this form for you to attend. If you do not provide this form, membership will be denied. If you are below the age of 16, your parents or guardian must also attend for you to attend. If you have any questions about this policy, please email registration.
Why must I have a picture ID with my birthdate to register?
Having a picture ID makes our lives much simpler in the long run. If you have preregistered, you MUST have a picture ID to claim that registration. This is to protect you from having your membership stolen. Also, if you appear to be under the age of 18, you again MUST have picture ID to prove your age. If you appear to be under the age of 18 and you don't have a picture ID to prove you aren't, you will be treated as a minor and, unless you have the minor consent form filled out, you will be denied membership. The judgement of age fall solely on the head of registration and the executive staff of MFM. This is to protect the convention and the dealers from any issues that might arise from dealing with minors. Memberships that can not be claimed because lack of ID can not be refunded or rolled over in any manner.
Minors (under 16) attending with their parents do not need to have ID.
I don't have an ID, what do I need to do?
We understand that there are still some people out there without picture IDs. If you do not have a picture ID with birthdate, please bring a notarized letter with your physical description and your birthdate.
I still have questions...
If you have any questions, feel free to email registration and we will try to help you.

--=={ Tiger Haven Auction }==--
Donations have already started coming in for the Tiger Haven Charity Auction!

--=={ Writing Track }==--
The Writing Track is gearing up for a variety of events for experienced writers, readers, and anyone curious about the art. Our yearly Writer’s Meet & Greet will offer a chance to socialize with fellow writers over
free snacks and drinks. We'll also be doing a basic talk on the Writer‘s Toolbox, a set of techniques for beginning and advanced storytelling.
Military SF is the theme of another of this year's talks, from at least one writer who's got experience in combining furry fiction with the art of war. We'll also talk about Writing For Games, involving both tabletop
and online role-playing games.
Finally, we're considering using you for our experiments. Do you like both gaming and writing? We'd like to try a world-building crossover in which two groups of people design and run a short tabletop RPG adventure for each other. Interested?
Contact me with feedback and other ideas at <kschnee@xepher.net>. See you in September!

--=={ MFM Critter ConSuite }==--
This year's Critter ConSuite will once again have a wide variety of snackies for this year's attendees with the traditional Cafe Karina Bagel Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Karina is contemplating ways of integrating this year's theme into both decor and food. Suggestions will be cheerfully welcomed and considered.
--=={ MFM Masquerade }==--
MFM wouldn't be the same without the Masq. Never fear though, there will be a Masq this year. If you are a fursuiter or pawpetter you are invited to join in and present an act. Just contact Blue Heeler SunFire for any details or information. It's fun and exciting.
The crowd filters in with lights half on. There is anticipation in the air, talking between friends, sounds mashing together. This all quiets down and the anticipation goes higher as the lights dim in the seats,and the stage brightens up. The MC tiger comes out and introduces the first act..... which could be you. Yes, You should start thinking and planning about what act you are going to perform in the MFM Masq. We have some good established acts, but are always looking for more. Now's the time to work on it, and figure out all what you wish to do. You'll be glad you were in the 2011 Masq.

--=={ MFM First Aid Hints! }==--
Looking back on the past year, my constant begging for people to drink lots of water had a large impact on MFM. I am proud to say that everyone remained well hydrated and I had no reports of over exhaustion from our suiters or our attendees. It is my hopes that this year, our trend of having only very minor medical incidents continues. That being said, there’s a few things I want to bring up. Last year was sort of a strange year here in the south, the temperature was lower than normal. However that can’t be counted on happening again, so this year, PLEASE remember to make FULL use of the headless lounge. Also, the staff from the hotel made sure that the water coolers in all the public rooms were always stocked so, as is my usual saying, drink more water.
To our Suiters, please remember that your body sweats to lose heat, but you also lose a lot of important salts and electrolytes, so it is my suggestion to have yourself a sports drink or two every day. I do not meant energy drink, as those do not help keep things normal in your body, I mean Gatorade or Powerade or something along those lines.
Also, a touchy subject but must be said, PLEASE SHOWER! The facility staff actually came up and thanked me for mentioning that in the video last year. While the staff at the Convention center/hotel is extremely diligent and very courteous, it is our own responsibility to be careful of stinging insects and snakes. If you see a snake, don’t touch it! I know that sounds like it should be common sense, but I’ve personally seen it happen.
IF you are allergic to stings/bites from insects, PLEASE CARRY YOUR MEDICATIONS WITH YOU! I cannot stress enough the importance of this. While yes there is the ambulance about 2 miles down the road, by the time the 911 call is made, it then has to go to the dispatcher, then out to the ambulance crew and they then have to get up and get into the ambulance and get to the hotel, your looking at possibly more than 5 minutes after the 911 call is made. Sometimes that isn’t fast enough. I have no intention of scaring anyone by saying this, but this comes from a professional paramedic, who has been working the field for 10 years now, and has been attending MFM and working medical for the past several years.
Just remember that here at MFM, we are “under construction” so keep your eyes open for the signs and workers that are out there to make sure you have an enjoyable time and safe convention.
See you there!
--=={ MFM Security Information }==--
Your MFM Security staff is diligently preparing for our first convention in our new home. You can easily recognize security staff at the convention by looking for the bright Animal Control Vests they wear. Please take a moment to read our code of conduct, and ask for clarification on any rule you are unsure of. This is going to be our BEST year yet, and your Security staff will be there keeping watch.
Even though we have moved to an area with a substantially lower crime rate, there are some basic things you can do to protect your personal belongings whenever you travel. Remove all valuables from your car. This includes GPS, Cell Phones, computers, and even radar detectors. Do not have items out in the open to temp passersby. Lock your doors, both car and hotel room, and do not leave cash or valuables out in the open in your room. Following these simple precautions can help make your MFM 2011 an enjoyable weekend. Are you interested in working with Security at the con? Just contact our Volunteer Coordinator and request security.
See you at MFM

--=={ Dance/Karaoke Information }==--
For a small convention with about 600-700 people, we do pretty well in terms of having a variety of things for people to do and see.
The dances and music events in general have always been kindaaaaaaaa Meh. It was like
1998: holy shit a packed house, everybody dancing, robot dancing!
1999: more lights, more sound...little less people
2000: lots of light, lots of sound....less people....
...and so on and so on and you get it, you get it.
So when i took back the dance 2 years ago, I dreamed of a total revitalization of the thing. Obviously this is a work in progress.
The first year it was just one dance event
the second, we had dance and karaoke available and tried to cover a wide swath.
So this year, we're changing the game again.
We will not be bringing back Happy hardcore. Not because we didn't like it. We did, but hardcore has a limited audience, and MFM really is a small convention.
We will be dividing the nights into themes.
Thursday Night will be our Karaoke Mixer and Impromptu Top 40's/ Lounge Called "Night Flight"
Friday Night will be our House/Dnb/Dubstep/Etc/Electronica Night Called "Off the Grid" -Art for poster tentatively being provided by beowulf
Saturday night will be our Top 40's Pop and Hip-Hop Night entitled "The Bump N Grind Haus"
Sunday night will be our Old Skool Jams and request lounge called "One Last Round"
To Our contributors from last year, we appreciated all that you did, and we'll be calling some of you back for an interest check to see what your plans are.
So My question is now, If you're a DJ, and we asking only Pro and Semi-Pro Jocks here, to step up and give us your best stuff.
We're planning a bigger promotional engine this year to get more interest in these events, and also the possibility of some monetary incentives to play MFM (not being specific because we don't know).
Before there's a lot of belching and whining about what "pro" or "semi-pro" is, Let me stop you. Pro means you played lots of other events, parties, shows, have a proven track record, and know how to read the crowds, making lightning fast decisions on the fly, and be a real draw for conventions"
Semi-pro people, like parties, bedroom DJ's,Second life DJ's, etc. We want you too. Come to MFM, prove your skills, show you can hang with the big boys, and help promote yourself.
--=={ Share Your Interests With Others }==--

See below for booking instructions and special information - You MUST book your room directly with the hotel!
--=={ T-Shirt Contest }==--
PLEASE READ THESE RULES IN THEIR ENTIRETY BEFORE ENTERING.

--=={ Gaming Information }==--
Wanna come out and play?

--=={ Tiger Haven Auction }==--
Donations have already started coming in for the Tiger Haven Charity Auction!

--=={ Writing Track }==--
The Writing Track is gearing up for a variety of events for experienced writers, readers, and anyone curious about the art.

--=={ MFM Critter ConSuite }==--
This year's Critter ConSuite will once again have a wide variety of snackies for this year's attendees with the traditional Cafe Karina Bagel Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Karina is contemplating ways of integrating this year's theme into both decor and food. Suggestions will be cheerfully welcomed and considered.
--=={ MFM Masquerade }==--
MFM wouldn't be the same without the Masq.

--=={ MFM Security Information }==--
Your MFM Security staff is diligently preparing for our first convention in our new home.

--=={ Dance/Karaoke Information }==--
For a small convention with about 600-700 people, we do pretty well in terms of having a variety of things for people to do and see.

--=={ T-Shirt Contest }==--
PLEASE READ THESE RULES IN THEIR ENTIRETY BEFORE ENTERING.
The rules for 2010's T-Shirt Contest are:
1) What's up for grabs?
There are three chances for your artwork to be selected for MFM's T-Shirts.
Attendees Choice - The winner of the Attendees Choice will have their artwork featured on the front of the MFM T-Shirts. This is chosen by you, the attendees.
Director's Choice - The winner of the Director's Choice will be featured on the back of the MFM T-Shirt.
Staff Choice - This will be chosen by the staff and be featured on their staff shirts
Each winner will receive a free attending membership.
It should also bear either "Mephit FurMeet" or "MFM" as well as the year or corresponding anniversary number (i.e.: 2010 or 14). Entries that misspell the name of the convention will be disqualified.
Our theme this year is "Welcome Home To Where The Wild Things Are - Southern Style"
Cutoff Date for Submitting Entries is 11:59 PM Central time on Thursday, July 1, 2010.
6) Where do we send it?
Please submit all entries to tshirt2010[at]mephitfurmeet.org
7) Other things.
Each artist may enter up to three pieces for inclusion in the contest. The administrator of the contest shall abstain from voting. The rules for voting will remain the same as in past years, where for a vote to be valid, the corresponding email address must be subscribed to one of Mephit FurMeet's mailing lists. IP Addresses will be logged, and MFM reserves the right to disqualify multiple votes from the same IP.
8) Some stuff you need to know (Better read it, it affects you!)
By submitting an entry to the Mephit FurMeet T-Shirt contest, you are granting Mephit FurMeet and its parent corporation, Mid South and Tennessee Anthropomorphic Arts Association (MST3A) an irrevocable, non-exclusive license to use the entry for promotional purposes. The original creators of the work are permitted to use the work in their own portfolios and promotions. Mephit FurMeet and MST3A reserve the right to review all entries and not allow any entry that it deems inappropriate (i.e.: drug/alcohol references, violent or sexual content, or possible trademark/copyright violations).
MFM shall in no way be responsible for entries that are lost in transit, either via email or postal service. If we do not receive an entry before an established cutoff date, the entry will not be included in the contest. Also, if you do not submit both required versions, your entry will not be included.

--=={ MFM Spirituality Track}==--
We are looking for panelists! If you can share your expertise or you have resources you would like us to include in this year's topics, please contact us. I guarantee we'll have you working overtime. We've been very busy since September. The cultural theme chosen for 2010 is The Cradle of Civilization: Your Furry Journey Begins Here! Here's our tentative panel proposals:
Life is what happens when you're making other plans.
Circumstances have forced a change of topic. We'd initially intended to cover African mythology in celebration of MFM's new life but we discovered, to our dismay, that so very many of the books were missing from our libraries, out of print, or prohibitively expensive that we simply couldn't give you the quality programming you've come to anticipate from us.
Enter, strangely enough, the movie "Lawrence of Arabia". We watched it...and then read his autobiography...and then read his biographies. Through the infamous Uncrowned King of the Desert, we discovered a culture with even older roots --- older than Africa, older than Egypt.
We proudly present to you The Cradle of Civilization: Your Furry Journey Begins Here!
We'll be looking at the mythologies of the people who lived in the deltas between the Tigris and Euprhates in what we now call the Middle East. This is a series of cultures rife with anthropomorphic potential: scorpion bodied men, gryphons, all manner of mythological and existing beasts. Think "The Mummy" or "Epic of Gilgamesh", shifting sands and lost ruins, undiscovered intellectual treasures! Drag out your khakis, strap on your pith helmet and join us as we explore this area so rich with human and anthropomorphic history.
We will, of course, also be offering the standard panels you have come to expect:
Introduction to Meditation - Don't know how? Need a refresher? Just need a moment to calm your mind and relax away from the joyful chaos of a furry convention? This panel goes over useful techniques requiring no mats, complicated poses, or incenses. We'll give you the basic tools you need for contacting your spirit guide or totem animal.
Guided Meditation - Put what you learned in the first panel to good use. We'll take you on a carefully designed journey which will allow you to explore your psyche and open yourself to messages from the animal world. This year, weather permitting, we'll have the opportunity for the very first time to perform this meditation in a natural environment. Who knows what you might discover?
That's Bull...- Very prominent and important in Middle Eastern mythology, we'll be taking a closer look at the common cow. Why was it so important to them? How did it come to be associated with kings?
Come find out, you're in for a treat...an that's no bull.
By special request, we are doing an encore presentation of The Bear. If you missed this one last year, you will definitely want to catch it this year. We plan on bringing back one past panel each year by special request so let us know which ones you want to see. These do not have to be related to the year's chosen culture.
As a compliment to our meditation panel, Simtra will be offering a short yoga class. Learn some animal poses and get the kinks out of your body so that your mind can concentrate on other things.
If you want to follow along, you should periodically check out our blog on the MFM web site. We list which books we'll be using and, when possible, where you can get them. We also have a wish list. If you're feeling generous, buy us books! Each year, we rack up enough library fees to rebuild Alexandria. Want to know what we need? It's right here:

We have so much more planned. Further dispatches as events warrant.
-=={Physically Challenged in the Furry Community}==-
Join Rukario in an entertaining and informative “round-table” discussion about being physically challenged in the furry community, and some personal experiences on how the Furry Community has impacted his life.
Fursuiting for the Physically Challenged
Panel Description:
In this panel Rukario, a fursuiter from New York City, discusses challenges about being physically challenged and being an active fursuiter, discusses the rewards and the challenges of how costuming has impacted his life. In this roundtable discussion, participants ask questions, and active participation is encouraged.
--=={ Gaming Information }==--
Wanna come out and play? This year's gaming track will have lots of opportunities for you to play your favorite games and learn some new ones as well. The gaming lounge is open most of the con, starting
after breakfast and running at least until after the unofficial traditional game of Are You a Werewolf? around midnight. We will have lots of games (board, card, strategy, etc.) but you are welcome to bring your own as well.
Looking for an opportunity to gain volunteer hours during the convention? Come demonstrate or run a game in the gaming lounge. You don't have to be a "Game Master", just have a willingness and patience
to show others how to play.
Also, we will be continuing the annual Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament to benefit Tiger Haven. Look for information in the future about how to sign up and help us raise money for the kitties. We are also looking for donations for prizes, so if you have something in mind (artists and dealers in particular), email either
caritas_skunk[at]windstream.net or demariana@gmail.com.

--=={ Tiger Haven Auction }==--
Tiger Haven is a safe haven for big cats.
The auction held each year at Mephit Fur Meet is often the largest single contributer to Tiger Haven.

--=={ Video Room }==--
The MFM Video Room, serving your Viewing Pleasure!
The Video Room Staff is psyched to bring together a brand-new video room befitting the brand-new hotel, featuring a new high-quality 7.1 surround sound system, a huge 8 foot screen and plenty of seating. We also hope to screen selected features in higher resolution, bringing the VR closer to a theater experience than ever before. Continuing on the successes of last year, we're bringing you a fresh batch of Furry, including new releases, some classic favorites and rarely-seen treats with free popcorn available throughout the con. Other new and exciting developments may be forthcoming, including something for those who like to heckle bad movies and even for those who like to draw. The MFM Video Room - making sure "welcome home" includes a living room.
--=={ Writing Track }==--
The furry fandom has a special take on several artforms; graphic art, puppeteering and fursuiting all come to mind. But only furry authors thrive on the stuff of pure imagination, undiluted by mundane material limits and free to cast their spells upon the canvas of the naked mind. At our new home in 2010, Mephit's Writing track will explore the nuts and bolts of how to craft art from the stuff of dreams, as well as offer chances for furry authors and publishers to just get together and talk shop. We've been exploring the creative process for many years at Mephit, and have had a ton of fun along the way. So, come join us and see what it's all about!
--=={ MFM Art Track }==--
Artists wanted (SHAMWOW!)
We need you, please come and draw, paint, sculpt, weld,tattoo(well...maybe not tattoo..or welding) or whatever you specialty is and email me at smurfs4ever @ hotmail.com about hosting a panel.
I promise we will have easels that actually work this year;)
--=={ MFM Critter ConSuite }==--
This year's Critter ConSuite will once again have a wide variety of snackies for this year's attendees with the traditional Cafe Karina Bagel Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Karina is contemplating ways of integrating this year's theme into both decor and food. Suggestions will be cheerfully welcomed and considered.
--=={ MFM Masquerade }==--
MFM wouldn't be the same without the Masq. Never fear though, there will be a Masq this year. If you are a fursuiter or pawpetter you are invited to join in and present an act. Just contact Blue Heeler SunFire
for any details or information. It's fun and exciting.
The sound echo'd around the town. The whistle, that same whistle that always meant the same thing. This time, it was different. Well, the whistle wasn't different, the fox running down the street towards the whistle was different. He was late, yes, that's what the whistle meant, he was late. As he rounded the corner, he could see it. The boat was slowly back paddling away from the shore. He cried out, and fortunatly the deck workers noticed him and didn't fully raise the gang plank. There was a few shaken hands between them as the fox got closer and closer. He took the pack off his back and tossed it, hitting the ramp as with practice. He then jumped himself, arms flailing. There was much discussion on the deck of the boat, until the fox pulled himself up on the ramp. Some coins changed hands as one of the gentleman stepped forward to the fox. "Someday, You won't make it." The boats whistle chimed off again as the mighty ship started down the lazy river. "But you made it this time, welcome home." The deckhand patted the fox on the back and lead him towards the interior.
---
That's right, time is approaching for those immortal words, "Welcome Home." Of course with thoughts of MFM coming up, the famous Masquerade is also approaching. Time is shorter than you might think, so make sure you are planning and preparing for the excellent acts that always grace our stage. Of course, our sound doggy would like to remind you that you should bring a CD or USB thing with only your song on it. Double check your song on a different source than you recorded it on to make sure it works regardless. I will have the sign up on Friday night, and would like to know what acts are being planned. Sunday is practice then the performance. The theme of this year is Southern Hospitality.

--=={ MFM First Aid Hints! }==--
Greetings from the land of cold weather!!
After a nice, cold, snowy winter here in Pittsburgh, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of some very important things. We on the Medical staff are here to help you have a healthy and incident free con experience. With that in mind, we would like to remind everyone that as wild as the weather can be, MFM has traditionally been very hot and humid. PLEASE drink plenty of water. I know spending time in fursuit is fun and that some suiters see this as what they should do the entire con. We want you all to have fun and enjoy yourselves, but please take advantage of the Headless Lounge to stop for a while and cool off and drink something. And for our non suiters, feel free to drop by the con suite and grab something to drink. Its easy during these times to get some very serious medical problems, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. And please remember to have a fair sized meal during the day, your body will need all the energy it can get to enjoy all the fun activities that are planned. On a personal note, i would like to encourage everyone who takes medication to make yourself a list of all your medications and allergies and keep them near your license/ID just in the worst case we have to have someone taken by ambulance. We just want everyone to have a good time. Again, please remember that we are here to help you, so if you need medical assistance with something, find any member of staff and ask them to contact the medical team. Thank you all and I hope to see you all there. Also, the medical staff does not have any drugs. We do not carry Aspirin or Tylenol or Motrin or Advil or Bennadryl. If you have allergies or headaches or anything else you need medication for, please bring it.
On behalf of the entire staff, the medical staff would like again to welcome you home to our new home, Whispering Woods. Our Medical head, Goliath, who has been coming to MFM since MFM 2004, and is a practicing paramedic and paramedic instructor, would like to announce that this year he is proud to have restructured the medical staff to serve you better. He would like to welcome Ashley Fox and Tigeris Tiger, his assistants, and the rest of his staff to a new beginning and new procedures. If you are experiencing any medical issues at the convention, feel free to stop by Con Ops on the Mezzanine level and ask for a medical staff member. We will have a dedicated room to discuss things with you and try to do our best to help you out of public con space where everyone could crowd around you. Also, any staff member can contact the medical staff, so if you’re out and about and need a member of medical, find any staff member and ask them to contact us. If you have medical experience and would be interested in helping out at various times during the con, please come by Con Ops and talk to Goliath. If he isn’t there when you stop by, please leave some contact information with either the med/security dispatcher or with any other Ops personnel and they will get it to him.

--=={ MFM Security Information }==--
Your MFM Security staff is diligently preparing for our first convention in our new home.
Following these simple precautions can help make your MFM 2010 an enjoyable weekend. Are you interested in working with Security at the con? Just contact our Volunteer Coordinator and request security.
See you at MFM
Alex

--=={ T-Shirt Contest }==--
PLEASE READ THESE RULES IN THEIR ENTIRETY BEFORE ENTERING.

--=={ MFM Spirituality Track}==--
We are looking for panelists!

--=={ Gaming Information }==--
Wanna come out and play?

--=={ Tiger Haven Auction }==--
Tiger Haven is a safe haven for big cats.
The auction held each year at Mephit Fur Meet is often the largest single contributer to Tiger Haven.

--=={ Video Room }==--
The MFM Video Room, serving your Viewing Pleasure!
--=={ Writing Track }==--
The furry fandom has a special take on several artforms; graphic art, puppeteering and fursuiting all come to mind.
--=={ MFM Art Track }==--
Artists wanted (SHAMWOW!)
We need you, please come and draw, paint, sculpt, weld,tattoo(well...maybe not tattoo..or welding) or whatever you specialty is and email me at smurfs4ever @ hotmail.com about hosting a panel.
I promise we will have easels that actually work this year;)
--=={ MFM Critter ConSuite }==--
This year's Critter ConSuite will once again have a wide variety of snackies for this year's attendees with the traditional Cafe Karina Bagel Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Karina is contemplating ways of integrating this year's theme into both decor and food. Suggestions will be cheerfully welcomed and considered.
--=={ MFM Masquerade }==--
MFM wouldn't be the same without the Masq.

--=={ MFM Security Information }==--
Your MFM Security staff is diligently preparing for our first convention in our new home.
Following these simple precautions can help make your MFM 2010 an enjoyable weekend. Are you interested in working with Security at the con? Just contact our Volunteer Coordinator and request security.
See you at MFM
Alex

Into the future
Posted 15 years ago2009 was an interesting year for sure. LOTS AND LOTS of changes, some good, some not so good. It has been a big learning experience for me.
So here is looking back at my year end wrap up from 2008
First the goals....
I'm still sticking with the plan of new things, new adventures, new achievements.
(I def did pretty good with this!)
I want to get a 2nd bike (still keeping my other one) just want to have something that is heavier (mine is only 360lbs) for longer distance riding. I want to do a couple longer distance rides in 2009.
(Well common sense prevailed and I traded in my bike for my new one, a Buell XB12XT Ulysses. It's the ultimate bike I wanted and it just really fell into place how things happened)
Camping! I'm planning on at least one camping trip!
(sighs didn't make it)
Continue on getting myself into better shape. I think I'm going to be due for an asthma meds change after the first of the year so hoping that I have as good or better success than I have had so far. It's nice to be able to breath better.
(Doc increased the asthma meds dosage and also looked at the pain study I went through and am borderline for a change there. The pain study showed I was border line between level 2 and level 3 and I really don't want to make the jump to the heavier meds but will depend on if I can get my back into better shape)
Explore and learn more about myself and try to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
(I did pretty good I think. I re-united myself with my family after 25 years. Met nieces and nephews that I had never met including my next older brother's son Scott who he and I really hit it off)
Just try and generally get more done. This past 18 months have been hard and more times then not, things didn't get accomplished the way I wanted because I was just mentally worn out and no motivation or energy to get a lot done.
(Got a lot done and still more to do. The move upstairs while no real preplanning done will make things lot easier for everyone. Also getting ready to lighten the load on a lot of "stuff" that I have that is just collecting dust that someone else might enjoy)
I want to expand a bit with my catering. Having access to a brand new commercial kitchen will help a lot!
(Now have regular clients with weekly jobs, it's nice but tiring!)
Def looking forward to wanting to be more active and get more exercise.
(This will continue into the new year!)
And what all went on this year.......
The year started interestingly and I did have a lot of positive things happen in my life over 2009.
I also had some big negatives. This included letting go of my best husky friend Mitchell after 14 years the week after my birthday. His health had been getting slowly worse to the point he could no longer even stand so I had to make the decision to let him go. I was there with him all the way through holding his paw and petting him and he was never left alone. It was tough but something that I had to do. Now 6+ months later, I'm starting to think about maybe getting a puppy/younger dog sometime this year. Just going to see how things go. I def want it to be a Husky or Malamute (or mix). I know I probably can't afford more than a pound puppy which is fine since that is what Dusty is. Actually have a possibility and will see how things work out there. Both Dusty and Kima are up there in age and when the time comes that one or the other moves to the next plane, I don't want them to go without canine companionship since both are such social dogs. So adding sooner it will help keep them maybe feeling younger having a younger dog around and less trauma/stress later.
My panic attacks have pretty much subsided with the occasional tight chest and small freak out. I have only had a few times over the year that I had to take my "magic pill". The worst thing about them is that they 99% of the time trigger an asthma attack which I think is worse than the panic attack itself. My biggest trigger is still high stress situations where I feel cornered. I have learned to deal with a lot and still learning.
Spike's dog Titus had to have surgery a couple weeks ago (he is doing great) and to help him out we swapped floors (Titus is on restricted movement for 8-10 weeks) of the house so we are now upstairs and Spike and Titus are downstairs. Dusty was soooooo not happy about the move at first but I think actually she perfers it upstairs now more than down. What was Spike's bedroom (for those that have been to the house) is now the upstairs living room and we have a separate bedroom (where Maui slept when he lived here) and a combined guest room/Silver's studio. We still have a lot of containers to sort through/get rid of stuff but it's really looking good. We had to put some $$$ into shelving and stuff because there is only one closet upstairs but it's worked well. Just have to figure out the rest of where stuff goes. The upstairs bathroom has been slowly getting redone with a nice curved shower curtain rod (it's amazing how much that opens up a small shower) and a few other things we still want to do in the bathroom when we get the time/money.
I have been doing a lot of back end work on MFM getting things for like the Con Suite and Karina to make her life as easy as possible. It's going to be an amazing year I think. This really is a new beginning. Ironically.....I was asked to give a job reference a month or so ago and our great rep that was at the Holiday Inn, Karla is now working at Whispering Woods and will be overseeing the group (not to mention the butthead GM at the Holiday Inn was fired a couple weeks ago) So lots happening there on the MFM front.
Looking forward to getting my W-2's so I can do my taxes. I get the sales tax back on my motorcycle, YAY! I can get my cushion built back up that has taken a pounding lately for things.
My nephew Scott has come to visit. It's def been a fun visit. I def know I cannot keep up with a 21 year old and let him do his thing! Sleep is a very wonderful thing!
Bad Dog has been busy. As of 1/1/10 we now have our 3am license!
Well enough ramblings! Happy hopes that this year brings everyone much happiness and good health. Just remember, to always appreciate who and what you have in your life. It's great to want things but you shouldn't forget or take for granted what you already have!

Saying goodbye to a member of my family
Posted 16 years agoSaying goodbye to a member of my family.
I knew this day would come and prepared myself the best I could.
I had to say goodbye to Mitchell Friday. I got to the vet about 430pm and they had a room ready for me. I had Mitch wrapped in a towel in my arms. He sat in my lap as I petted him and rubbed his stripe. The vet tech came in and spread a blanket out on the floor and I moved down there with him. He layed quietly there with me. I didn't let my hand off of him the entire time. Dr Burrell came in and explained everything and made sure I wanted to be there and I said yes. The iv cath was put in and Mitchy didn't make a move. As the drug was pushed into the pic not a sound or anything, he just layed his head down and went to sleep. I was petting him and talking to him the whole time. Doc did his exam and confirmed it was done and gave me some time with him. I regained my composure and went out and got some special treats for the other guys and just sat in the truck for a while as the tears streamed down. I got a call from Heartland Pet Cremation even before I left the parking lot to tell me not to worry that they already had him and would make sure everything was taken care of properly.
My Mitchy Dog

Last night when I got home from work and then from FUSE I couldn't get Mitchell to eat anything, not even canned food or treats. He hadn't moved from where I had left him yesterday morning. I got him to get up and helped him into the kitchen and he did get a drink of water but that was it. This morning he hadn't moved from where he was last night and didn't even come into my room where he usually sleeps every night.
I had pretty much already decided that if things kept going down hill I wasn't going to let him be miserable or suffer. I made the final decision last night when I got home and saw the shape he was in. So this morning I arranged to take off early, the vet to be ready when I got there and the cremation service to be able to pick him up tonight still. I was able to keep my composure pretty well through all the phone calls. I had already found the urn I wanted and it's being custom made in aromatic cedar and will have Mitch's picture on it printed on metal that won't fade. The maker of the urn and the cremation service are working together and I should be able to bring him back home where he belongs the end of next week.

Mitchell has been with me for almost 14 years. I got him from a breeder when I still lived in Houston. He, Dusty and Kima have been with me through some of the toughest times of my life. No matter what they have been there for me. Mitchell was always my dog and pretty much where I was, he was. He slept every night on the floor side of my bed. I actually have gottem to the point when I get up at night knowing where to step as to not step on him even if I'm mostly still asleep.
I know I'm still going to be looking for him for a while when I get home. He would usually pop out and say hi as soon as he knew I was home. Even of late, when he was pretty much blind he would yip till I answered him and he could know where I was.
I have had more and more ask if they could do anything. I'm planning on doing some type of special memorial for Mitchell. I'm thinking either a sculpture or a piece of art or something. I'll try and figure out what when I can actually compost thoughts more fully. If anyone would want to do something, I set up a special paypal fund for him and his memorial.

Mitchell you will always be a part of me, your happy smile and bright eyes, your silly little happy yips. You will always be loved, always be missed, and never ever forgotten. Thank you for the time with me and the happiness you have brought into my life
I'll close with the Rainbow Bridge Poem
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I love you Mitchell

A new year, a new ad!
Posted 16 years agoIn this day and age, stability is something that is a rare thing. Life has been good to me. I have stable home, while not fancy, it is comfortable, a good job that pays the bills and 3 wonderful dogs (only slightly spoiled) so I'm not looking to move from Saint Louis area. What I am missing is a best friend. Someone to share good times and bad, to go on walks, window shopping, or just doing silly spur of the moment things. I love to try and to live life to it's fullest so if WoW or SL is your life and all you are interested in and shriek at the thought of going outside, I'm probably not the one for you. I bike, motorcycle, hike, love working in the yard or cooking (I'm a trained chef) ,It's not all go-go-go though! Things like cuddling up and watching a good horror movie, watching a rain storm or what ever catches our fancy. In other words just enjoying life the best ways possible. I have a WIDE variety of kinks and fetishes and while not locked into any, I definitely enjoy more flavors than just vanilla. I'm a definite switch and would like someone that enjoys both sides of things as well.
Looking for friends and hopefully find a friendship that develops into more. Someone to share laughs and good times with and is there when needed for the tough times too. I have become much more health conscious and want someone that takes care of themselves. I do love meeting others though! I'm a professional event planner and professional chef. I have been know to be found here and there and especially at MFM (the Furry Sci-Fi con I run in Memphis) I also host several events in the Saint Louis area throughout the year as well as being very active in the gay community and event planner for the Bad Dog Saloon here in Saint Louis. You have to be comfortable with being in the limelight on occasion and be able to handle being with someone that will, while not flaunting it, end up in the center of things. I don't hide who and what I am and the other person should feel the same
Here is what I'm looking for in someone
Someone that....
Likes to be outside
Likes variety and to try new things
Is not a picky eater and willing to be adventuresome
Doesn't mind/enjoys having a kinky side but still like romance
Likes to kiss and cuddle
Isn't afraid to help around the house
Likes to go out but doesn't mind an evening at home
Doesn't mind that I'm openly gay (but can tone it down when needed) and active in the community
Is willing to participate with me in events and volunteer opportunities (I love doing things together as a couple)
Is willing to be there for emotional support when needed
This is a mutual thing. I want to be there for them as they are there for me
Like I said I'm looking for new friends...near or far. Never know when that special someone will suddenly happen to stop by!

Tshirt Art Contest!!!
Posted 17 years agoThe bar I hang out at (and am the activities director for) is looking for a new design to be used for the bars dart teams. This is something that they would like to be easy to print on a shirt (one or two colors) something that kind of would be a good logo for the Bad Dog Saloon and also something that some how encompasses darts (darts, dart board, etc) The Winner will get a prize and one of the tshirts.
Let me know if you are interested or want more details!
Here is the bar's website http://www.baddogsaloonstl.com

--=={ Live Music At MFM! }==--
This year's live music will be provided by Hali.
Matthew Ebel, aka Hali of Firpine (or Hali Heron in Second Life) is a full-time bird and full-time musician. He's been playing piano since he was 5 and touring as a professional musician since 1999. Active in the Furry community since he was 14, he's one of the few osprey in the entire fandom.
You may have heard his classic FurryMUCK theme, "In The MUCK" back in the heyday of telnet. You also may have heard his tunes like "Drive Away" and "I Know You're There" on a few podcasts over the past two years. Recently he's played such prestigious Second Life venues as the Playboy grand opening and the STA Plaza for the Electric Sheep Company, among many others. He even backed up country star Billy Currington at the Grand Ole Opry in 2003.

everyone has to participate in, this will give those that want to, a chance to remember the happy times. A chance to say thank you for those special influences in our lives. We are adding to our special memory book again this year to remember those that have impacted our lives

Saint Louis Pride 2007 *RSVP's NEEDED!!!*
Posted 18 years agoThis year Saint Louis will again be having an awesome weekend of activities for Pride and the Furs will too!
When? June 22-24, 2007 (yes, I know the other things happening that weekend)
Friday night we will be meeting up for dinner at Qdoba at the corner of Arsenal and Grand for those arriving early enough. Then over to Mokabe’s Coffee House for coffee (it’s right across from Tower Grove Park and Qdoba at the corner of Arsenal and Grand)
Saturday we will head off to breakfast and then to the Pride Fest at Tower Grove Park.
Saturday afternoon the group needs to vote on what we are doing….
Your choices are……
Potluck at the Big Blue House.
We ask everyone to bring what they would like to throw on the grill and also a salad, side dish or dessert to share (should feed 6-8 people) We will have plates, plasticware, cups and ice tea. If you want anything else please feel free to bring it.
Or….
For something a little different this year, going to Incredible Pizza http://www.incrediblepizza.com/ for dinner and games. (no plans for fursuiting since Sunday will be such a hard day on fursuiters)
Saturday evening we will take a group to the Bad Dog Saloon for drinks, darts, pool and socializing
Sunday, we will be meeting up at the BBH at 8am SHARP! and then grab a quick bite of breakfast at Hardee’s and then over to the Parade route for line up. Bob and Jim, two of the owners of the Bad Dog Saloon have graciously offered to let us suit up at their house which is just about a block and a half from the parade route.
This year we have again been invited by two groups to join in their parade entries
Cheap TRX, who will be doing a “Pirate” themed entry in the parade
And…
The Bad Dog Saloon, who will be doing a open community (everyone is welcome gay, straight, trans, bi, lesbian) and “Canine” themed entry.
If you want to be in the parade, I need to know which entry you want to be a part of!! This is VERY important!!
If you don’t want to be in the parade, it’s all good! Outside of Cheap TRX is a perfect vantage point to see the parade!
After the parade we will head to Chris’s Pancakes and Dining for lunch.
This is an “All Welcoming” weekend. Everyone is invited and welcome to participate in what ever they wish to. This means you don’t have to be Gay, Bi, Lesbian, Trans to participate. It’s just a perfect weekend for everyone to get together and have a good time! The “No Drama” sign will be up for the weekend.
I do still have just 2 rooms left at the rate of $78 per night plus tax at the Best Western Kirkwood Inn. If you would like one of these rooms, I need to know by 6/17.
If you would like more details or want to RSVP please email mideonwerewolf[at]gmail.com I need to know which events you are planning to attend, which of the Saturday dinner options you prefer and if you are planning to be in the parade, which entry you want to be a part of. I need all RSVP’s by 6/17 so we can plan accordingly!
