Work trouble with a silver lining
General | Posted 7 years agoSo, recently, I have been applying for programming roles like a madman to no avail. I have had some interest but none of it has lead to work. They either hire someone older than me or just never offer me an interview or a test so I've had to go on Universal Credit in the UK whilst I look for work which is something new to me and something I didn't really want to do but, food and rent take priority.
I have however decided to pursue other stuff. I've decided to get back into 3D art which is what I used to do for work and I might get back into traditional art as well. I was never a character artist, more environments, textures, VFX, and lighting, but I might give it a shot sometime down the line.
I'm also looking into piercing apprenticeships in my area which is something I've been interested in for quite some time now, even since before I got my first piercings so that could turn into something pretty cool. I'd probably never do genital piercings because there's a lot that could go wrong, but everything else is fair game.

Animus Q&A
General | Posted 7 years agoHi guys, I thought I'd clear up some things that people have been asking me about Animus.
Q: Is this built in the pherian engine?
A: I can see why you think that, but no. This game is made in Unity. Pherian was also made in Unity but it had a lot of editor extensions and customized frameworks that I can't use anymore since Studio Dragonwolf was bought out for its worth. Animus uses core Unity Components to ensure cross-platform compatibility. Some things might have been added to base components, but they are all engine native objects.
Q: Is this gonna be free?
A: That's actually a tricky one but it's one that we're exploring. After how bad pherian did in terms of income vs downloads and active players, which came to a ratio of 0.13 people per capita, we're not sure we're going to release it for free.
I also think that in the interest of keeping minors from accessing pornography, it'd be best to keep it patreon only for a little while before we went public on Itch.io or some other platform.
Q: I don't have a patreon, is there some other way I can support you guys?
A: We're looking into this as we speak. There might be some use in a ko-fi account or some other way where you can get stuff for your support, but we're not sure just yet.
Q: Are you making this so you don't have to touch pherian anymore?
A: I don't have the rights to work on pherian anymore. I also don't work for the people that are using it for other stuff now. Like I said in an earlier journal, I was told that they wouldn't be scrapping the project for the tools i built and they would be remaking it but with a lot of additions.
If you have any more questions, give me a shout either on here or twitter.

Yes, I'm making a porn game
General | Posted 7 years agoAs you may have seen, or heard, or played (if I've let you), I am developing an adult-oriented game for the furry fandom seeing as my employer decided that they'd be letting me go.
It's got everything you could ever want. Adventure, taverns, wenches, wars and a lot of hot, steamy sex.
I'll post more details here in a little bit, but for now, we're working on character creation, code prototyping, and world-building as well as setting up a patreon and a Ko-fi and all that good stuff.

Soft Boiled Elk, Pherian, and the future
General | Posted 7 years agoit's time to talk about pherian
So, there's some new developments with Soft Boiled Elk and our ownership of Pherian. We're going to be revamping the game, turning into more of an open world styled text adventure with engaging visuals and we'll be working with a newer, faster code base.
what we're doing
We have been spending a lot of time looking at what we have and what we want at the end of it. We have come up with the following ideas so far:
•3D environments with real-time physics, lighting and particle systems
•More in-depth character creation
•nicer user interfaces that you can hide and show on click.
•multiple save slots
•online save backup with a pheri-online account (a free service we are developing)
•an automatic updater independent from Itch and gamejolt update methods (you need the itch or gamejolt launcher to update without redownloading a game. With ours, it updates if you have an internet connection)
•a full soundtrack.
•local, area, and world maps for free travel
•battle and inventory systems
were always open to suggestions
If you want to suggest something for Pherian, we're open to suggestions of what you think would make pherian a better game.

I'm back in Control
General | Posted 7 years agoSo, a lot has happened since my last journal. I got the opportunity to start another software company, only I did it properly this time. I am the Creative Director and Lead Gameplay Programmer for Soft Boiled Elk (The missing hyphen is on purpose) and my partner is the managing director because I should never be put in control of large decisions.
We're working on three games right now and using tools from Pherian to help us flesh out another IP. Unfortunately, Pherian is still not in the pipeline to be finished and I'm not sure when it will be commercially viable for us to do so.
It'd be cool if you would like our facebook page though. Any support during start-up phase is much appreciated.

The future of Pherian isn't looking too hot :(
General | Posted 8 years agoI've been quiet in the fandom for a little while now, I know that I said I'd have a progress report up in a month and a bit but things have changed. While I was able to raise some money from the development of Pherian and from Ko-fi, it wasn't enough to work on the project full-time and as a result of this, I have had to get a job working as a software engineer for another company.
The contract I signed stated that whilst I could still write my own software, I wouldn't be able to make money from it through either full price sale or shareware "donations" or have the ability to test personal software in the workplace.
I know that this is shit, but there's nothing I can do about it. I need to work to put food on the table and pay bills. My fiance may have a job and get carers allowance but £190 a week won't pay the rent, bills and food shopping so it's only fair that I sacrifice something to be able to go out and split the cost.
In the future, I may be able to blow the dust off of pherian and continue working on it, but for now, the project is being shelved.

Pherian is back in development
General | Posted 8 years agoI've started work on the next part of pherian. Most of late August and most of this month was spent prepping for University and moving out of my house and into the halls of residence here at Derby. Just putting this up in case any of you thought I'd abandoned the project. That's not happening.
I will have to find part-time work in order to live which may mean development is slower though because I haven't made much money from it, but that's okay. I make furry stuff as a sort of labour of love thing. After Pherian is finished, I might charge a dollar maximum for it, but that's it.
I'll see you all in a month and a bit :)

Pherian 1.0.2 and what i've learnt
General | Posted 8 years agoPherian 1.0.2 fixed some more problems with the scene switcher.
I’ve learnt that, even if you’re making a game and surviving off of your severance pay, you should hire people part time to do QA instead of getting friends (which you trust) to play your game and give you feedback, because often times, your friends don’t tell you everything you need to know or sometimes won’t actually test your software at all.
You can download them from the links below but I highly recommend you also download either download the Itch.io launcher or the Gamejolt launcher for quicker and easier updates so you don't have to download brand new patches and then delete the older build from your machines.

Pherian 1.0.0 and hotfix 1.0.1
General | Posted 8 years agoPherian is now out in early access with its prologue hitting digital "shelves" yesterday. This was followed by a hotfix that fixed some issues that Zener had outlined and what I thought were serious problems. I'm still working on fixes for other things that don't affect gameplay enough to warrant a hotfix at this time*

*: most minor issues will be worked out as development goes along.

My fursona is being used by other people
General | Posted 8 years agoI went onto Omegle just to see what the fuss was about. Typed in furry as my interest and found someone using Miko as their role play character and listing off a massive set of kinks and fetishes that I'd never even heard of until today. Obviously, I'm slightly pissed off because the image is taken directly from here, same URL and everything. Not only does it make my character look a little dodgy but it could also harm me in the long term because I'm trying to release a legitimate game at the moment and whilst I want people to associate it with myself and Studio DragonWolf, I don't want people to associate it with a version of the character that betrays what I've been building Miko up to be over the last 14 years.
If the person doing this is reading this journal, I know that I can't technically stop you from doing this, but the least I can do is ask. You seemed to get annoyed when I told you that I owned the character and you stated that America is a free country, you can do what you want, before promptly calling me a faggot and closing the conversation.

I announced Pherian today
General | Posted 8 years agoToday, I told the world about Pherian. It's my first solo game since leaving my job as a games programmer to go to University and even though I know what I'm doing, it's still kind of scary to tell the world what you're up to. I showed a little bit of footage directly from the game as well, hoping that'll interest people a little bit even talked about a demo.
Fail fast, follow the fun used to be my motto with games but since I'm pouring a serious amount of effort into Pherian, I'm going to need a new one

I joined the Furry-ous Squad
General | Posted 8 years agoHey everyone, I recently joined a Youtube group called The Furry-ous Squad as a content creator and an editor. Our most recent thing (as of writing this) is a Jackbox stream that's legit funny.
You should go check it out and subscribe for our future videos. They're awesome and I help edit them in my spare time.

I made a games studio
General | Posted 8 years agoHello everyone, MikoWulf here.
I recently started a games studio for developing and publishing my games and digital choose your own adventures for multiple platforms and hopefully getting something to the PS4 and Xbox One platforms or whatever comes next a little further down the line. I'm also going to study computer games programming for four years at Derby University after studying three years of Computer games design at the Wakefield College in England.
Start small, scale up. Fail fast, follow the fun.
