I don't often reply to comments, because I usually can't think of anything witty or constructive to say, and making a post that just says "Thanks" seems, to me, like a waste of space.

College?
Posted 18 years ago(Note: I don't know how to write personal journal, so forgive me if this gets random/confusing)
For a while now the idea of dropping out of college has been in the back of my head, but over the past few days it's become a serious consideration. Right now I'm a freshman (in my second semester) at Columbia College Chicago, studying photography. I came to this school to study film production though, but changed that when I finally accepted that I'm too shy to be a directer or a producer, too horrid a writer to become a screenwriter, and just not interested in becoming a random part of the crew. I switched to photography because it seemed interesting and more secure than doing something like painting. I can't paint or do any of that sort of art on a regular basis, anyhow; I learned that a long time ago. Now I'm starting to learn that photography is just as subject to my mood swings as drawing/painting/whatever. But that's not what I'm writing this journal about...
I really don't know what I should do. I've tried making lists of why I should stay in school or should leave school, but I look at them and I just feel... indecisive, uncertain, dumb, etc. I'll try my best to write out why I think I should or shouldn't stay.
If I were to stay in school and finish the four years, get my degree, etc. then I guess I'd have an education, and I'd probably be able to get a decent, stable job. My parents would also be happier, probably. Negatively speaking, college will cost a shitload (one year has already cost enough, and even though my parents are paying for it, I still feel bad for costing so much). I'll also be stuck in Chicago (unless I change schools, but it's too late to do that, and I have no clue where I'd go. Anywhere would probably be just as bad). When I first chose the school I though that being in Chicago would be good, because there'd be lots of opportunities and people to meet and places to go, but... It's not been. All I do here is sit in my dorm room and stare at my computer screen. I don't have a car here (it'd be too expensive), and I'm too timid to learn how to use the trains and busses, so I'm stuck to staying within walking distance of my dorm (and there are surprisingly few things within walking distance of my dorm, even though it's in the heart of downtown Chicago). I know I should just get up my courage and learn to use the trains and shit, but... I don't know. I don't know if I have that much courage. I'm a cowardly bastard... Anyway, also about college, I just don't know if I have the motivation to keep up with my schoolwork. I feel like I'm in my senior year of high school again. I just can't bring myself to do work anymore. It's not like I'm even being asked to do that much, and I have tons of free time... I guess that's just my problem though. Whatever...
If I left school, I'd go back to Missouri, and live with my mom again. I'd try to get a job (god knows what I'd do) and just... I dunno. I really don't know what I'd do. Would I be able to motivate myself to do anything? Would I be able to find something that I enjoy and that isn't subject to my mood swings, something that I could study if I decide to go back to college someday? By leaving college, would I just become lazier than I already am (if that's possible)? Or by having a job, would I be able to build some kind of a positive work ethic? God knows if I could even get a job, though, I've never had a real one before, and the last time I tried to apply, I filled out the application, but was too shy to turn it in... *shrugs* If I could get a job, I could at least save up some money so that I wouldn't have to rely on my parents so much. I could also save up enough to go visit the people I know from online, but... I don't even know if I want to do that anymore. I've not really had good experiences with meeting people from online...
Anyway... I guess if I stay in school, I'll get an education and a job (possibly), if I can motivate myself to do the work (god knows where I can find the motivation, though), and if I leave school, I'll try to get a job, save up some money, and figure out what the hell I want to do with my life, maybe. I guess if I stay in school, I'll get an education and a job (possibly), if I can motivate myself to do the work (god knows where I can find the motivation, though), and if I leave school, I'll try to get a job, save up some money, and figure out what the hell I want to do with my life, maybe. I really don't know what to do... Sorry if this is all just confusing...

[ ] I have tripped on my shoelace and fallen on my face.
[ ] I have choked on my own spit.
[ ] I've seen the Matrix a bunch of times and still don't get it.
[ ] I type only with my pointer fingers.
[x] I have accidently caught something on fire. (I'm checking this because I can't remember if it was an accident or not...)
[ ] I've told a cop to freck off and gotten screwed for it.
[x] I've attempted to sip out of a straw but it accidently went into my nose, rather than my mouth. (The sad truth is that your nose does not have taste buds...)
[x] sometimes when I think of something funny, I laugh out loud and people look at me weird. (Ever seen the movie "Arthur"?)
[x] I've caught myself drooling.
[ ] I've accidently caused an explosion.
[ ] If someone says the word "fart", I can't help but laugh. (Not fart, but buttmunch...)
[ ] I've turned into a "do not enter" one way road plenty of times. (Does twice count as plenty of times?)
[ ] Sometimes I just stop thinking & zone out
[x] It is POSSIBLE to lick your elbow. (Yes, it's possible for me to lick your elbow)
