Gaming meet tomorrow, and also a survey!
Posted 10 years agoHeyhey, the gaming meet is tomorrow (as in Friday, since I'm writing this instead of being asleep). As long as things dry up a bit, grass parking should be fine (but if it rains at all in the next days, probably not). I don't want anyone getting stuck this time. Most of the retro shelf is boxed up, but you're still welcome to play any of them, just doing early prep for Fur the 'More.
If you attend the meet, please do me a favor and take this survey.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V67YFDS
I'm trying to see what you guys are comfortable with if, at some point in the future, I added some kind of optional payment to go along with attending. If you've attended it before and would like to continue to do so, please take the survey. If you haven't and don't plan on it, don't worry about it. I plan to keep it free indefinitely, and any money would go toward replacing controllers, getting new chairs, possibly even buying snacks. If your response doesn't fit with what I listed, or you have a question about the meet, leave a comment below.
P.S. The last Friday of next month coincides with Fur the 'More, and it's not that I'm NOT having a gaming meet, it just happens to be down in Virginia during the con.

Q: How are you getting there?
A: Possibly in the Fur the 'More moving van, or in my own car, figuring that one out.
Q: Who do I address you as?
A: Milt. Miltonius. Prime. THE GAME MASTER.
Q: How old are you?
A: 28.
Q: Where are you staying?
A: Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Corner.
Q: When will you be arriving and leaving?
A: Possibly on Wednesday, leaving Monday.
Q: Who will you be hanging with?
A: Whoever goes to the video game room, and with a handful of other friends.
Q: Who will you be rooming with?
A:
rally_ranger
isatism
Q: Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
A: Video game room, or asleep in my room.
Q: What/where will you be eating?
A: Staff meals, Walmart snack runs, the one or two times people can pry me away from the VG room.
Q: Will you be having a room party?
A: No, my room is anti-party. Sleep, hygiene, and well-behaved people.
Q: Will you be drinking and/or getting drunk?
A: I may drink a tiny bit, but nowhere near enough to get drunk.
Q: What is your gender?
A: Ambient/hip-hop.
Q: How tall are you?
A: A little under 6'.
Q: If I approach you, will you chat with me?
A: If I'm not helping an attendee, setting something up, or playing Rock Band, then possibly.
Q: If I see you, how should I get your attention?
A: Say "Hey Milt" or break something (will result in negative attention).
Q: How many furry conventions have you attended?
A: Anthrocon (04-14) MFM (05) and Fur the 'More (13-15). And the last two New Year's Furry Balls, if that counts.
Q: Do you own a fursuit?
A: Nope.
Q: Can I hug or snuggle with you?
A: Hugs are fine.
Q: How can I find you?
A: Video game room, the guy with the combined sense of pride and paternal attentiveness to seeing everyone having a good time.
Q: Can I buy you drinks?
A: You can buy me tons of refreshments from Walmart, since it'll be cheaper, as long as you're not buying me alcohol. Unless it's Mike's or Smirnoff Ice.
Q: Can I take your picture?
A: PLEASE TAKE MY PICTURE. One of the problems inherent in staffing (and not wearing a fursuit) is rarely showing up in pictures. Take as many as you want.
Q: Do you do free art, trades, commissions, badges?
A: I'm bringing $thousands in video games and TVs, think of that as free art.
Q: Do you have a table in the Artist Alley / Dealer's Den or a panel in the Art Show? If so, what are you selling?
A: Nope.
Q: Do you plan to volunteer?
A: I volunteer a good chunk of my life to staffing.
Q: What's your goal for the con this year?
A: Get feedback.
Q: Anything else I need to know?
A: The gaming rooms are in through the main lobby, go right, walk past the elevators, and they're right there. Bathrooms are somewhere close by. Eat at least two meals and try to get some sleep. And shower.

Going to Furbowl from MD? Willing to do me a favor?
Posted 10 years agoIf the answer is yes to both, I need someone to pick up a netbook I'm having set up for use at Fur the 'More from someone in DE, but there's no way I can make it to Furbowl (working every Saturday, boo). I'd be paying them in advance, all I'd need you to do is 1) be someone I know and trust, and 2) keep it safe until I can get it from you. Let me know if anyone can help.

In case anyone wants to add me, will probably post some pictures from the gaming meet or conventions.
Getting the gaming schedule finalized, it's going to be pretty weird this year. Since we didn't get much attendee feedback on what they wanted to see, we're going with what we'd have the most fun running. Expect things like Soul Calibur 2, Mount Your Friends, Kirby Superstar, Pokemon Stadium 2, and lots of other old/weird games.

Tokyo Sushi farewell meet.
Posted 10 years agoTokyo Sushi, one of my favorite restaurants, is closing down soon (owners are moving back to Thailand). I want to have a proper send-off event since a handful of us have enjoyed it in the past. Friday, March 20th, around 8:30pm, since I'll likely be working that night and will be driving down there as soon as I get off. If the owners announce a closing date sooner than that, I'll have to bump it up.
If there's enough interest once dinner is over, we might head to Crabtowne for some arcade games/pinball.
Tails/ears should be fine, but please leave the fursuits at home. Please RSVP via Surple ( https://www.surple.com/group/miltsgamingmeet/599 )"

Want to run a gaming event at Fur the 'More?
Posted 10 years agoContact me ASAP, I'm working on our schedule. Lots of open spots if you have something you'd prefer, we're open 24 hours a day (through noon on Monday, even). Already have things like Smash, Mario Kart, a bunch of retro stuff that I like, but a couple that don't have someone running it yet.
Surple is up for February gaming meet. RSVP today!

Bam, there we go. Parking will be a good deal tighter this month, due to losing the grass as a potential parking spot. Please try to carpool, either from your respective homes or from Cici's. We may be down a TV this month, so if anyone wants to bring one for the Wii U, let me know, I'm looking into cheaper HDs at the moment (though a few other things take priority before that).

Gaming meet problem FAQs, a.k.a. HEARD YOU BEEN TALKIN SHIT
Posted 10 years agoHey there! If you're reading this, I'm assuming you've been to my gaming meet before (or you just like reading things I post). Over the years, I've known some people have had some issues with certain things, which is perfectly understandable. I love hearing feedback/criticism (when it's given in a comment or private message, not second-hand complaints). Knowing people are enjoying themselves means a lot to me. So hey, have a FAQs! Apologies if it sounds a little harsh, I've been in my head most of the night (i.e. working closing on a Saturday), will try to be concise and possibly even helpful.
So-and-so doesn't like me! I don't feel welcome!
Everyone has the right to like/dislike whoever they want. I'm not going to demand everyone be best friends, but I expect everyone to be courteous. If you have a serious issue with another attendee, please tell me in private, or ask me to step aside to calmly say something, one-on-one (not with your friend standing next to you while you talk about taking someone out in the woods and kicking their ass because you "respect (me) too much to do it on (my) property").
If you feel uncomfortable with someone/the crowd enough so to dissuade you from attending, I'll feel a little bad but accept that. It's always nice seeing people who look forward to seeing a bunch of friends and doing some gaming, but we're definitely at that awkward point between large party and small event. Growing pains.
Most people are there to game. Nobody HAS to be inviting or make you feel extra welcome (aside from me, to an extent). I rarely encounter anyone at the meet who is outright disrespectful to others for no reason whatsoever.
There isn't enough space/aren't enough chairs!
Most rearranging that I've done over the years has been to allow for more attendees. I'll continue to do so to make things more efficient, short of getting rid of my bed and getting a futon (screw that, I've done it, futons are uncomfortable/I don't need more people farting up my bed).
Regarding the chairs, a while ago I asked if anyone would be willing to put money toward getting some chairs. I am incredibly appreciative of everyone who did so, I really hate having to ask anyone for money, and we collected enough to get the five newer ones (which were in good condition, but subject to the same issues chairs develop over time with butts in them). However, that does not guarantee that you will get a seat. One of the few downsides to having higher attendance numbers means chairs fill up quick. Saying "so-and-so put in money to get chairs, you didn't, please vacate this seat so they can use it" feels like a really shitty thing to say to anyone. Now that I've got more spending money I'm keeping an eye out on Craigslist for decent-quality folding chairs (preferably smooth metal with padding), three or four more for now and then we'll see how that helps.
Why is fursuiting not allowed?
Fursuiting is technically allowed, with big fat asterixes surrounding it. If you have complete spacial awareness (don't knock shit over), are not asking for special fursuiting treatment (I can give you water, that's it), and are not doing it as an attention grab, I'm okay with it! However, it's a gaming meet first, so while the majority of attendees are furries, I'd prefer not to include anything that gets in the way of anyone gaming. Tails and ears are fine, but by no means mandatory, and follow the same rules (please be careful not to knock anything over).
Parking is an issue!
I completely agree, I wish we had more parking/didn't have to cram people in. Unfortunately, since I'm living with family (who are nice enough to put up with tons of cars/noise once a month), I have to abide by their parking rules. Leaving a spot for my mom's car closest to the house, a way for my dad to pull in once he gets back from his music gig, and don't park in the grass closest to the parking lot (it gets waterlogged). And sadly, it might get more complicated since we just dug a drainage ditch, meaning the grass is off-limits for now. I do appreciate everyone carpooling back from Cici's, being willing to leave your car there for a few hours.
You said something mean to me!
If I did honestly say something mean, I apologize. It gets stressful sometimes, having a bunch of people (including a bunch I rarely see/have not met before) in what counts as my bedroom, tons of noise, people wanting my attention from multiple directions. Hectic can be fun sometimes, and it keeps me in shape for convention staffing, but I occasionally have to say something stern/harsh. I do have my preferences about keeping things from getting damaged, what is okay/not okay to use. I've also gotten kind of a mental callous from years of staffing/having to yell directions from people, so I may get a little louder/possibly meaner than intended, and it usually isn't my intent to offend.
Cici's sucks! Why can't we meet elsewhere?
It's not the best, I agree, but it's spacious and cheap, and is the best option we have right now that doesn't limit space/cost more. You don't have to eat there, you could just hang out and talk, or eat elsewhere and meet us at my place afterward. I won't take offense at either.
Why can't you offer anything other than water?
I see the gaming meet as an extension of just wanting to hang out with friends and game (which it initially was, after numbers dropped and stayed down for the Mid-Monthly Meet). I don't like the thought of charging friends just to come over and hang out with me. Even when it gets close to 30 friends, jockeying for space. Please keep in mind that having drinks/snacks for people who aren't me requires additional money, and while I'd love to have a fully-stocked fridge and cooler for people to raid, it just isn't in the (non)budget. I'd rather focus on getting more games to play, replacing controllers, other things that everyone can use and keep making use of.
I've gone to your meet and you haven't been to mine!
I know, and I feel bad that I can't, especially now that I work all three days of the weekend. I'd love to attend more meets, if only to be there and hang out for a bit, but time is a priority nowadays (especially since I have to request off for my own meet in advance, in addition to conventions I work at). If I can find the time/motivation to, I'll try to be there.
Are you planning on moving the meet to somewhere with more space?
Not at the moment, no. Seeing how long we can get away with not charging people out the ass just to get together and game. As much as I'd like to, it would be require 1) payment from me (meaning payment from you, or being SUPER EXTRA AWESOME and shelling out a couple hundred on my own) and 2) moving close to my entire collection back and forth each month.
Other problem!
If you have any other issues, please comment below or send me a private message, and I'll do my best to address it. I do take everyone's comfort/fun pretty seriously, and if there's an issue I'd rather do what I can to fix it (unless it's either slightly more complicated than I can fix on my own, or you get more out of having something to complain about).
Edit -- I am in no way saying anyone who has had these concerns or has felt negatively toward the meet shouldn't attend. You're still quite welcome to, and I have no plans to treat anyone different for having complaints.

Future of the gaming meet (in regards to parking).
Posted 10 years agoSo, we all know that the grass next to the parking lot absorbs a lot of water. Having to park there isn't always the best.
Good thing -- My dad is digging things out to allow for better drainage when it rains.
Bad thing -- There is now a ditch between the road and the grass, meaning nobody can park there for the indeterminate future.
This means that we have to make a better effort to carpool from Cici's/wherever you're driving from. This also means that if the parking lot is full, you literally will not have a parking space (aside from the side of the road, which I don't know if I can recommend considering how people drive around here). It's not something I'm happy to be dealing with, but I needed to share it with you guys, so we can make it work. I'm going to go back to running a Surple page, hopefully not having to cap the number (or at least number of cars that can be brought), but I'll tell you if I make any other changes.

You can stare at me playing Rock Band for free.
Do you do trades?
Likely no, unless it's something dumb and cheap for something equally dumb and cheap.
Do you take commissions?
You can pay me to play Rock Band, I'll take requests and I have little shame.
Attending parties?:
Not likely, I even left before the staff parties started last year.
Do you dance?
Not even Dance Central anymore.
Do you drink?:
A tiny bit.
Can I buy you a drink:
If you're getting me one of the very few kinds of alcohol I'll accept (various Mike's and Smirnoff Ice, or JOHNNY BOOTLEGGER)
How can I find you?
Console staff table or my Rock Band setup. Or Twitter.
Are you nice?
Are you overly sensitive? Probably not. Are you understanding that I put up with attendee idiocy? Somewhat.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Wait til I'm not in the middle of a song or helping an attendee, approach me from the front.
Are you attending any panels?:
Possibly the Custom Rock Band/Rocksmith panel, or the Two Best Friends Play panel.
How do I identify myself to you?:
Unless I see you often, please don't assume I'll recognize you, I'm around thousands of people and am usually looking our for people running into me/damaging my instruments.
Interested in helping Fur the 'More gaming?
Posted 10 years agoI'm looking for one or two people who might be interested in staffing either side of gaming. One person is switching to another department, another might not be able to make it and I can't risk being short two people (esp. in order to stay open 24 hours). If you're interested, and fit most of these critera --
- have staffed game rooms at other cons
- comfortable interacting with attendees in a friendly/civil manner
- know how to set up TVs/consoles/controllers, switch out batteries
- can put up with me getting loud/frustrated at nothing in particular without shutting down
- interested in running events and providing input/opinions for the betterment of the room
- comfortable meeting up prior to the con to transport equipment to the hotel
- (optional) own a fair amount of stuff you're willing to bring/let other attendees use
- (optional) you're a night person and willing to work the overnight shift (will supply extra batteries/music box)
-- let me know ASAP and we'll get something figured out.
Alternately, if you're not interested in that, I'm more than happy to take requests for games we should look into, tournaments that we (or possibly you) should run, and general feedback.

Attending NYFB? Interested in helping the VG room?
Posted 10 years agoI'm looking for one or two people who are
- attending New Year's Furry Ball
- wouldn't mind watching the staff table in the VG room
- willing to take attendee badges in exchange for handing out controllers/games, and taking them back/returning badges
- are reasonably trustworthy/can deal with potentially-drunk people
I'd likely need you for an hour or two, unless you're interested in sticking around to help more. Willing to buy you a drink or something to snack on in return for your help.

Question regarding furry popularity.
Posted 11 years agoWhich do you find more appealing --
Having hundreds of thousands of "friends" (followers) and comments due to art/fursuit pictures?
Or having significantly less followers/comments but higher percentage of actual friends/people you talk to?
I can see the upside to both, sometimes I feel like it's impossible to get info out because I'm talking about actual events and planning, and not just fapwork or suit shots, but it makes the times people do contact me more meaningful. There's no right or wrong answer.

11/28 gaming meet Surple page, RSVP if you can
Posted 11 years agohttps://www.surple.com/group/miltsgamingmeet/563
Let me know if you think you'll be attending, I'm trying to get a rough estimate on how many might be there. Share if you'd like, I'm going to tweet it a few times over the next couple of days. If there's anyone interested in checking it out for the first time, you can point them my way.

Gaming meet on 11/28!
Posted 11 years agoYes, it's happening on Black Friday, which happens to be the last Friday of the month. If I ever need to move the meet forward, I'll make sure I put out a warning far enough ahead of time for everyone. Otherwise, please assume it'll always be on the last Friday of each month.
Same deal as always, same time/location. Will try to have a Surple up tonight once I'm off work. Will have Smash Wii U running, possibly on a second TV (which someone still hasn't picked up, but is welcome to keep here til they need it back), will very likely have my GC adapter by then but if you have one as well, you're welcome to bring it. Same goes for Amiibos, if you'd like to see yours duke it out with mine (which I've been neglecting to train, work has been hectic).
If you need any additional information, send me a note or comment and I'll be happy to help.

New Year's Furry Ball!
Posted 11 years agoI'm definitely going to be there. And surprise, surprise, I'm involved with gaming again.
At the moment, we're planning on running
- Smash Bros for Wii U
- Rock Band
- a few retro setups
If anybody has any questions, or knows anyone who does, send them this way (or to the Furst State forums, where I also posted), and I'll be happy to help to the best of my knowledge.

Surple page for Halloween gaming meet!
Posted 11 years agohttps://www.surple.com/group/miltsgamingmeet/552
Please RSVP if you're pretty sure you'll be there. Updated the basic info, will try to go back to having one each month (since some people do use it).

Gaming meet on 10/31!
Posted 11 years agoThis month's meet happens to fall on Halloween. If I had pushed it up a week, it would have meant working on Halloween, so I might as well have some fun with people and get the most out of it.
I recently picked up a Wii U, so there will definitely be some Mario Kart 8, as well as plenty of Smash Bros. for 3DS (looking forward to 4-player Smash Run). I don't have anything major planned, but you're welcome to dress up, I'll try to get some snacks and drinks (which you're welcome to help out with), and I might push playing some spookier games.
If you can't make it, no worries, we'll see you another month. I know Halloween is a big event for some people, go make the most of it, and have a great time.

Gaming meet this Friday! (9/26)
Posted 11 years agoYup, same time and place as always. If you have any questions, let me know.
Still working on getting rid of the pool table, more room would make things much nicer for flapping elbows wildly.
Already thinking ahead to next month's meet (which falls on Halloween), any thoughts or comments on that?

Help me plan for Fur the 'More gaming!
Posted 11 years agoI'll probably do one of these every few months, and I'm not expecting everyone to FUCKING DROP EVERYTHING and swarm to them, but I really want your input. I know what I like to play, but if I'm running a game room, and I can do so, I want to have a better mix of what everyone wants.
So far we'll definitely have these
- some kind of Smash tournament, possible multiple -- depends on interest, who offers/MAKES SERIOUS EFFORT to run them
- lots of retro gaming -- I'll be bringing tons of old games, controllers, and CRTs
- RETRO RANDOM ROYALE -- in some modified form, went well last year and at Anthrocon
- Mario Kart 8 -- if at all possible, I know a few people who own it, might get a WiiU by then if I find one cheap
- Tetris Attack -- open to Pokemon Puzzle League as well, depending on feedback
- plenty of tabletop events -- Magic: the Gathering, a wide variety of other card and tabletop games
Is there anything in particular you'd like to see? Anything you know will be out between now and May? Is there anything you personally own that you'd enjoy setting up and playing alongside others? I'm not going to stroke my ego, if you had any issues with the game room last year, and there's anything you think would make it better this year, let me know (either in comment or in private) and I'll take it seriously. Input is important, and I'm a lot happier knowing I'm doing this for you guys, not just me. I could stay home and hang out in my room if I wanted to do that.
Please keep in mind that, if you have a newer console and would want to play a game specifically for that, we urge you to consider bringing yours. We'll take very good care of it, follow any specific instructions you have, and will definitely appreciate it and give it back when we're done. We're growing but don't have a large budget specifically for gaming, so we need a little help with costlier consoles and games.

Life updates, work, etc.
Posted 11 years agoLately I've been working a lot. Been at Ledo's for a few months now, since a month or two before Anthrocon. Been working six days a week for a while, sucks sometimes. Weekends are mostly non-existent since it's a restaurant, have to request off to make it to my own gaming meet. It's not BAD, I'm just realizing how much of my life centered around being off Fridays/Saturdays.
Most days that I work, I don't really want to do much once I'm off other than go home and relax, and maybe play Terraria/stay up til I know I'll only get a few hours of sleep before work. The one other furmeet I can possibly make it to is the Ledo's meet, which I can't motivate myself to attend because that'd mean I'm at a Ledo's every day of that week.
Hopefully we'll be hiring someone else for my position soon-ish, meaning I'll be able to make it out and do more. Having more money is nice, but most of the reason I've been saving is because my motivation is shot, and I just wind up staying home and eating cheap stuff.
Things are well, just mildly stressed and strained. I miss a lot of people and places, but it'll be better when I don't have to scrape for convention money. Still excited for Fur the 'More, if anyone has anything they want to see there, let me know. We'll definitely have everything we had last year (more than likely) as well as tournaments for Smash (realistically, the 3DS version and WiiU version, not sure if Brawl will return).

Gaming meet warning!
Posted 11 years agoAt the moment, my AC isn't working. There's a SMALL chance it'll be fixed by Friday, but giving everyone fair warning, it might get pretty warm in there. If you want to duck out this month, I wouldn't blame you. It shouldn't be an issue in September (especially with temp going down), but if you'd rather not get a bit sweaty this month, my place might not be a good choice.
Aside from that, looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it.

Gaming meet on 8/29, and updates.
Posted 11 years agoYes, the meet is happening. I've been swamped with work, haven't had time to post anything/make a Surple. Same time and place as always.
Haven't been able to attend any meets due to working weekends, which sucks and I miss them, but eh. Having money is okay. I miss hanging out with people, I'm still up for it, it'd just have to be after work most days (the days that I open and get off at 2 or 5), or really late. I've been playing more Terraria lately, just made it into Hardmode with a few friends. Just celebrated my birthday, thank you to everyone who messaged me.

Your opinion on my use of Surple.
Posted 11 years agoDoes anyone really care that much that I use it? I know that in time, as numbers grow, I'm going to have to set an attendance cap, and I'd likely use Surple for that. But for the time being, does anyone actually enjoy that I use it? I like seeing who is definitely planning to attend, gets me a bit excited for things, but there's always twice as many people who just show up.
