I haven't opened for commissions in a while - I used to get decent traction on Etsy but it seems so overrun with AI art I don't think I can compete. And last time I mentioned something on twitter, I got completely overloaded with bot DMs.

it's all about depth

Hello all, if you've been following me for a long time you know that I don't normally post super personal stuff nor do I ask for help especially financially. However my family and I are in a situation where we need to provide care for our older cat... he's 16 years old (at least) and has recently developed oral squamous cell carcinoma. Basically a giant mass of mouth cancer, which as it sounds, is really painful for him, and makes it difficult to eat. He's on medications for it but the outlook does not look good. Maybe 2-4 months left, the vet says, if we're optimistic. Take into the fact that we're also going to be moving within the next couple weeks, which has a lot of our cash tied up at the moment, including basically all credit card bills. Also gas and food are fucking expensive right now, as we're all painfully aware of. So things are getting really sticky.
I'm taking commissions to help with his vet bills - mainly right now the pain and cancer medications are the biggest cost. But if he gets to be too frail and in pain I am not going to prolong his life unnecessarily.
We lost another one of our cats exactly a year ago to cancer as well and he suffered the last couple of weeks. I don't want to repeat the same thing.

I feel like doing a painting, but I don't have any ideas, so I'm opening for a painting commission slot. I haven't opened for a painting commission in literally a year, and don't plan on opening for many in the future.

My stipulations:
-SFW only - no nudity
-I am going to try out 'hourly' pricing. Starting at $45 an hour with a $45 deposit for the first hours' work. I'm a fast worker for an artist, though (I've been told this by other artists, haha). Estimated hours to completion is anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on detail.
-One or two characters. Maybe 3 if it's just a little animal or something.
-Preferably outdoors or semi-outdoors setting; organic-feeling or space background preferred. Sci-fi or fantasy situations encouraged. No military. No sitting around indoors on couches or bed.
-Some creative freedom required. A character, mood, and/or general idea encouraged; but please don't tell me exactly what to paint to the point where I'm just your paint for numbers monkey.

well, mostly.

it's been a long, rough year and a half. subtractions and additions to the family, including pets, sadly. lots of changes in work situations. since june i've been burying myself in web design/development to forget. i also think i just hit a wall artwise. right now i just can't do art for money. i need to pivot back to using art as emotional therapy, and compartmentalizing 'work' from 'passion'. thankfully i'm in a situation where i don't have to work full-time hours - i'm getting regular non-art-work that's much more high paying so i don't have to put in 40 hours a week at a job i only like 20% of the time anymore just to pay the bills.

i will probably be doing a lot of artwork about the 'looming spectre of death', as norm macdonald said, who i was supposed to go see live one month after he fucking died. and that was like.. the least of my fucking worries this year. it's always cool when you have to go back to therapy for the first time in 10 years. unfortunately the horizon looks like it'll get darker before it brightens.

but the tide always goes out, and the slow march of time continues, and the waves of grief come in longer and longer intervals. you're still alive. i'm still alive. we're here. it's fall. another year is almost over. the frost made the leaves fall unrealistically fast on the sugar maple tree this morning, small fairy trails of ice covering the car, our breath in little puffs.

I did have to take a temp part time job to make up for a lack of commission work back late last year. plus having to save up for some personal stuff. Also owning a house is expensive lol. But that means i'm down to 2-3 days a week working on commissions, and just the fact that i'm a slower worker now too, for some minor health reasons, plus i'm just old now lol. i don't like having a backlog and having a temp job means i don't have to rely on commissions for my sole part of the household income. so i'm just going to close them down for now and open when I have the current set complete.
If you sent me a note and I agreed to take your commission, I'll still be taking it, but none after today for a while.
