Getting organized - new portfolio gallery
Posted 15 years agoI'm finally getting around to getting some of my photo work into a more organized and consistent portfolio; I've got photos scattered all over, but finally have a place for the good ones to stay. If interested, first batch is up, but still have most of the last year to get in there.
My portfolio can be found at:

I'm a photographer!
Posted 15 years agoI had what I feel was my first 'professional' photo shoot over the weekend (even though I didn't make any money.)
I have only worked with friends before; heck, mostly I have worked with coral/floral 'still'-life. But I have also done some amazing professional-quality work with some patient friends (thank you, Flask), which prepared me to try my wings with people I don't know.
This was the first time I've worked in a serious artistic way with someone I didn't know; an amateur model, eager to work with an amateur photographer to help build each other's portfolio's. And we're both so happy with the results we're eager to work together again.
But perhaps even more than the photos, I'm delighted by the process... part of the intent of this was to work through the stress of building a rapport and giving direction with someone I didn't know... and it came more naturally than I expected. And managed to stay professionally distant in what was an inherently intimate photo shoot.
But more than that, it was the first time that I felt that the technical aspects of photography were second-nature enough that they weren't all-consuming... was first time I really felt like I spent most of my attention looking through the lens instead of at it, and got much better compositions for it.

First art show!
Posted 15 years agoI'm delighted to say I have my first exhibit up in an art show at the university! If any of you locals should happen to find yourself on campus, swing by Kendall to check out the faculty/staff art show; I have three photos up: a couple macro favorites, and one of
Flask's sexy self:

Submission not deleted by user
Posted 16 years agoHeya Folks,
I've always been surprised to find how many submissions on my watch list get deleted before I see them; it seemed odd to me that so many people would have second thoughts on their art submissions.
Well... it happened to me. Not that I had second thoughts or deleted my submissions, though it may look so. No, apparently that 'deleted by the user' message actually means that the submission was censored by FA's admins.
Two photos of mine were deleted for alleged AUP violations. Well.. one was.... the other I've no idea, as there was no note accompanying its deletion, just a silent swing of the censor bat.
For those that saw the photos in question, you already know that the photos are tame - handsome Flask modeling in underwear, and no more racy or profane than the Sears catalog. Somehow, on a site that has 'art' of cubs being raped by children, a photo of a hot man in his underwear went over the line.
I've asked to have the decision reconsidered.

No FC for me
Posted 16 years agoHeya folks,
Since I had talked to a number of you about it before now... wanted to let you know that I changed my mind and canceled plans for FC in January. If any of you are out here and make it up north, please look me up! And to all of you attending, have a blast!

Of Dragons and Dungeons
Posted 16 years agoLast Saturday,
AceKitsunami,
Ishinryukun,
Pucacorgi,
Flask and I played Dungeons and Dragons for the first time together in what will hopefully become a long-lasting campaign. We're playing 4th edition, and come from varying RPG backgrounds. As the greying bull of the group, all of my D&D experience was with AD&D (or even earlier versions), so 4th edition has been an interesting change.
We got a late start, but had a blast - to the point that even though we were all getting pretty tired by the end, I think the coming of dawn surprised us all!
After a mysterious attack on our town, we chased the villainy to its lair and fought a couple mighty battles before we found the darkest of beasts - a thankfully immature, yet still mighty blue dragon. After an epic battle, the beast lay slain - and AceKitsunami (in his guise as Tsunami the Ranger) got the killing blow!
We will continue the saga this Saturday and hopefully for many more to come.

Alleyways
Posted 16 years agoHappy Summer Solstice, everyone!!
I started a new photo project today, that's been in my head for a while. I live in an older neighborhood - my own home was built in 1928 - and has the alleyways that were more common in that less crowded time.
I lived with only a bike as my transportation for six years in this town, three in school, three starting my professional career. And in those years I learned to haunt alleyways more than streets whenever the opportunity presented itself. Its a face of the city that only the trash haulers, homeless, and occasional cyclist are likely to know.
And though many of the alleyways of my town are merely veins for the trash and recycling systems, gems are hidden throughout the city. Sometimes its an alleyway intersection that looks like a set from Stand By Me, or an overgrown English garden, an RV palace, or a lush Japanese garden, each open to the world but hidden in an obscure corner of it... the alleyways of this old town tell a much more interesting story than the streets, and at a storyteller's pace.
So I'll be taking a year's worth of photos of, from, and in the alleyways of my neighborhood. Its also an excuse to force myself out more and to experiment with different lenses and techniques - and to walk to work at least once a week. I hope that I can sift from the debris of those photo sessions enough pieces to puzzle together an interesting story.
Today was largely a scouting mission; I took an ultra wide-angle lens and monopod to get big quick shots. I also used a cicular polarizing lens to help with glare and to make colors pop in the midday sun. Not a lot of 'keepers' but it sparked a lot of ideas. Posting a few to my gallery in a moment.

Obey the Cheesecake
Posted 16 years agoYay! I had my first furparty last night!!
Pucacorgi,
AceKitsunami,
Ishinryukun, and
Flask came over for dinner and a movie - though we never did get around to a movie. Everyone had a fun time and we all made new friends. :)
Dinner seemed a success - vegetarian black bean chili is one of my favorites, and its always a good sign when even carnivores go in for seconds. And the cheesecake... its true power will increase over the next few weeks, as all four of them are haunted by its memory, and drawn inexorably back for more...
I got some great photos that I'll be putting up in a moment... a studio session with
Flask, as well as some great ones of the furband playing RockStar. :D
Thanks again for coming over last night, gang - it was a blast. Can't wait to start our D&D campaign! :D
