Hey, do you like free games?
Posted 5 years agoFollow my Twitter at https://mobile.twitter.com/baxterwilde1 and I'll occasionally announce streams where you could win a free game! Or follow and watch because you enjoy interacting with people while watching video game footage! Or because you enjoy the idea of watching someone be awful at them and mercilessly mocking them for it! It's all good.
Also, I have a frankly ridiculous amount of art I haven't uploaded yet and probably should at some point.

Reminder: Split Commission
Posted 6 years agoAs a reminder, I'm trying to do a split commission with BadCoyote. I'll be contacting him next Friday when I get paid, but I'd like to have a partner chosen by Monday or Tuesday so we can work out details and a budget before I contact him. That gives us a few days to brainstorm and come up with ideas we like. Here's a link to his pricing information. I'll pay the higher base price; all I'm asking is that you pay the lower second character price, and maybe split the cost of a background if we want to include one. I'll pay the premium for special effects like lighting and such, if it's part of what we come up with.
Your budget doesn't affect your chances of being picked over someone else. I don't care if you can only afford a sketch or if you want to go for something colored. I'm doing this because splitting the cost of a commission makes it more accessible to everyone.
As a reminder, this is the character you will be trying to get it on with.

Split Commission
Posted 6 years agoHey fuckos.
In 2 weeks when I get my first full paycheck since being rehired and none of it will be scheduled to go anywhere, I'm gonna celebrate by contacting BadCoyote about getting a commission. Like the last last time this happened, I'll be choosing a character belonging to one of you to join me.
Unlike last time, though, I won't be giving the slot away for free. Sorry.
I want to work with one of you to get a commission we both enjoy. I'll pay the higher base price and the premium for extra details while all you have to do is pay the lower second character slot price (and maybe split the price for a background, if we decide to do that). Essentially, we'll be working together to determine our budget, which will thereafter determine the quality of the image we can get, any relevant themes we want included (such as the inclusion of magic or a specific setting), and the overall appearance of the commission.
So tell your friends! Tell your family! Shout it from the rooftops!
Or just get the word around to anyone who might be interested.

D&D Game Reminder
Posted 6 years agoStill need a couple more players, if you or anyone you know might be interested.
I'm considering running a D&D campaign starting here in a few weeks. It'll be on Saturdays starting around 7-8 pm US Central time (that's UTC -6... in most cases. We're still doing that absolutely archaic "daylight saving time" thing). You'll need to have Discord and an account on Roll20 (both of which are free) to be able to play.
Message me if you're interested

Free art winner
Posted 7 years agoI want to thank everyone who was interested (which was a lot more people than I honestly expected). Chunie was ready to move me into his active commission slots, and I chose a character submitted by LancerBuck.
I do want to give a shoutout to Thrakos for submitting another character design I absolutely loved and highly considered using, and will probably be in contact with him in the future about another commission.

hun's commission waiting list. Yaaaaaay.
But why am I announcing it? Well, it's gonna be a 2-character commission, and I want to include ONE OF YOU as the second character.
Yeah. You heard me.
This is gonna be a picture of my character getting very roughly dominated by another one of your choosing. Well... of your submission and MY choosing.
So, here's how this is gonna go down.
1) Submit characters you want to see fuck my brains out in a semi-public setting (possible an alleyway at night; details will be worked out once he actually begins the drawing process). Please feel free to submit multiple characters.
2) The final character selection is mine to make. No complaints from anyone once I make my choice. That being said, of course, if the person I select withdraws for any reason, I'll have to choose another.
3) Tell your friends! I'm not very well-known and I want to include anyone who's interested. So please spread the word.

Dark Souls 2
Posted 11 years ago"... Yeah, it's pretty good. *Closing credits start to roll, but are cut off* All right, all right!" Ben "Yahtzee" Crowshaw, Fallout 3 review.
Let me be frank outright. From Software has done themselves a massive disservice by intentionally linking this game to Dark Souls. As a sequel to Dark Souls, it falls very flat. As a Souls game in general, it's a great addition to the series. All of the charm, magic, and controller-snapping frustration that made Demon's and Dark Souls special is there. But this is no more Dark Souls than Dark was Demon's Souls. The established world canon is tossed out the window in favor of a brand new story, in a brand new country, which might just be Lordran after it's undergone several thousand years of terraforming without any major cultural advancements happening possibly due to everyone suffering from amnesia every few generations (which begs the question of how that differs from being set somewhere else entirely). So the question remains, why a sequel? They could have called it "The Marvelous Adventures of Stabpipes McUndeadguy" and it would have had approximately as much to do with Dark Souls as it does now.
Anyway, let's break this bad boy down.
Story- I'm very lukewarm on DS2's story, because it seems to be more about the lone undead than how fucked the world is and how it go there. I don't care about the undead. He's just a douchewaffle blindly following the advice of some old lady whose face melted off. It's the world's story that deserves telling. There's also a problem with flow. You go to Drangleic to find a cure for being undead (because fuck this "being immortal" shit) and somehow end up attempting to overthrow the monarchy without any transition from one goal to the next. It's also hoisted a lot more than the story in DS1 was, which is something I was concerned about when a direct sequel was announced. DS1's method of storytelling allowed for the player to establish their own involvement in the story canon. DS2, by comparison, forces the player to be simultaneously more and less involved in the story overall. Everyone is always soliloquizing about your motivations, but again, you don't really know how you transition from one goal to the next. You're just kind of being strung along, which is another reason why I prefer the story to be about the world rather than the undead we're controlling.
Gameplay- What do you want? It's a Souls game. There are a couple new weapon types to contend with (my absolute favorite of all being the Twinblades, including among pre-existing weapons) and a new type of magic (Hexes were important enough to get their own spell type but apparently not important enough to get their own kind of catalyst). Ultimately, you have a shield and something to poke your enemies to death with from melee and ranged combat. If you don't figure out a system of which pointy thing works best for you, you'll find yourself being re-purposed as wallpaper quite often. Some changes have occurred. You now lose maximum health every time you die, but can revert from Hollow to Human anywhere if you have the items. There are healing items besides Estus Flasks, so you only start off with 1 and need very rare, often very HIDDEN, items to enhance the number and strength of your flasks. Enemies now die after being killed 15~ times, so you can't grind anywhere for very long. Overall though, it's still a Souls game. If you can play DS1, you can play this.
Bosses- DS2's 31 bosses soundly trumps DS1's 26 (including DLC), but there's considerably less variety. About a dozen of the fights are just with big guys in armor (two of the bosses are, in fact, one fight against a big guy in armor and then later against two of the EXACT SAME big guy in armor). A few of the fights are meant to evoke DS1, too. The Belfry Gargoyles, for example, fight almost exactly the same as the originals, there are just 5 instead of 2 now. Najka is a scorpion lady that fights very similarly to Quelaag. The Royal Rat Authority is a big dog that starts limping when it gets low on health. They don't really get points for copy-pasting so much, but it still presents plenty of challenge and decent enough variety. Though there's nothing as visually engaging as the Gaping Dragon who apparently left an appointment mid open-heart surgery to fight us, but they do get bonus horror points for the giant spider broodmother nesting in a dragon carcass. I couldn't kill that thing fast enough.
Strategy- The Infusion system can't really be quantified alongside DS1's upgrade mechanics. They're considerably different. In absolute fairness, DS2's Infusions are better due to being streamlined and simpler, allowing every weapon to be Infused with (almost) any element (including status effects now!) at any point during its upgrade process. You can infuse catalysts with elements to boost their magic output (Infuse a staff with a Palestone to boost Sorceries or a Darknight stone to enhance Hexes, etc.), and add Infusions to boss and unique weapons. You can Infuse shields to boost that specific defense property. As with before, it's all about finding something that works for you. Because I can shoot people in the face with magic all day, but if you tried to tell me to make a greatsword-toting melee character, I'd be dead 5 times in the first 5 minutes.
Graphics- KINDLY FUCK OFF IF YOU THINK TOP-TIER GRAPHICS ARE THAT IMPORTANT. (The graphics do look better, and they didn't really skimp on gameplay to get it there, so there's that, I guess, if it's THAT fucking important to you.)
Conclusion- Like I said before, if they had called it Something Else Souls (Deadly, Dragon, Dominatrix, etc), it wouldn't draw the ire of being directly connected to Dark Souls and could be more freely judged on its own merits. But they DID connect it to DS, and so are challenging people to hold the games up to be judged together. We'll, however, take it as its own game, and such, it's an amazing addition to to the Souls franchise and shows that From Software still more or less know what they're doing :P
Also there was a point on a big rope bridge suspended miles above the nearest thing resembling ground swaying in the wind where I almost fainted from vertigo, so hooray for immersion, I guess X3

Posted 12 years agoTo the people leaving FA. Good for you. Tell us where you're going and get the fuck out. We don't need to hear your jackassish opinion about how you feel betrayed that some douchewaffle with damning allegations against him was appointed to the staff. The issue doesn't involve you and never has, so stop being babies about it.
To the people staying on FA. Good for you. Shut your goddamn mouths. We don;t need to hear YOUR jackassish opinions about how you think you're so much more mature and well-adjusted than the people leaving just because you're not affected by the possibility that an accused rapist has direct access to your personal and private information and conversations.
To the actually intelligent people who are expanding onto multiple forums, including FA, and aren't making a big fuss about it one way or the other. Good for you. You're probably the least insufferable of the lot.

Perhaps it's fear
Posted 12 years agoI've come to realize that the idea of there being nothing after death is actually quite a frightening concept, if you stop to think about it. Is this why people so readily grasp on to any ideas or religions that offer the promise of life after death? The uncertainty of it all? The fear of there suddenly being nothing where there once was the potential for everything? Will there even be a "me" once I'm gone? What is death, anyway? Can it actually be experienced by anyone but the living? What makes life worth living if there's nothing to come of it? On that note, what is life? What defines it in such a way that it can be taken away by an ever increasing number of things?
These questions, and questions like these, originate from a depressed state of mind, but as they continue, each one sparks a flame of curiosity that slowly overcomes my depression, until I'm just left with the "me" there was before. Instead of some daunting, unknowable force, death returns to simply being another adventure everyone has to face eventually, somewhere down the line.
And then I have to get ready for work because it's almost 1 and I've been sitting around waxing philosophical instead of getting dressed. Again.

Rayman
Posted 12 years agoKinda surprised, in all honesty. Those who know me know that as far as games go, platformers are neither my strong suit nor even games I really enjoy. I don't dislike them, but I tend to find most platformers (like just about anything with Mario in the name) really lacking in character.
Rayman Origins, however, is quite a breath of fresh air in the stagnant room that is 2D side-scrolling platforming. Every musical score is fantastic, the environments are beautiful, the controls handle fluidly, and the toony style and character expressions give the game personality and a fun atmosphere.
Plus, I'd totally do Rayman. For srsly. Even with him being a quadruple amputee with his hands and feet magically floating in proximity to his body.
As of posting this, Steam is offering Rayman Origins for free with the pre-purchase of Rayman Legends, available to play in about 3 and a half days. I picked it up despite not being a fan of platformers due in part to Yahtzee's review of Origins, which was admittedly more than a year ago, done in conjunction with Super Mario 3D land, but it really stuck with me. I don't always agree with everything he says about every game, but I do respect him as a game reviewer, so I figured it would be worth a try. Plus you get two games for cheaper than what one game usually costs nowadays :P

New year stream!
Posted 13 years agoStarting tomorrow (December 31st) at around noon (EST) I'll be streaming movies and games into the new year. What I stream will depend on whether I can find what I want at the store today, but even if I don't, I will still stream :P
Potential activities include...
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children
The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising
Madagascar 3
Various Disney movies, including, but not limited to, The Great Mouse Detective, Mulan, Hercules, Atlantis, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and such as that...
Polar Bear Cafe (Japanese audio, English subtitles)
s-Cry-ed (English audio)
Excel Saga (Japanese audio, English subtitles)
Daria
Any games I have in my Steam library. Lately, it's been things like Batman: Arkham City, Prototype, NiGHTS into Dream, and Dragon Age Origins, but none of the 60 I have installed shall be counted out :P
Guild Wars 2
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Potentially console games if I can find a component-to-USB hookup at Wally World today. Otherwise not :P
So, yeah, come and ring in the arbitrary division of time with me! Forego your friends and family in real life to hang out with me online :P
Will probably include voice, and may include guests should anyone want to help provide color commentary :P

Emotions
Posted 13 years agoFor a while, it seemed my emotions were dominated by the negative energies of life. Anger, frustration, jealousy, heartbreak... It was hard to overcome them and focus on what was good in my life.
But now, as if to counteract that, my heart has shut down, and I've entered a sort of "guarded" state. My capacity for feeling emotion has been severely restricted. The negativity that consumed me is gone, but so are all the positive emotions I was able to feel. It's hard to explain.
Here's an example of what I mean. For anyone who's seen "Grave of the Fireflies," you know it's a heart-wrenching tearjerker. I watched it for the first time last night and was barely moved at all. It's not like I didn't understand the situation was horrible. I just felt very little in the way of sympathy or sadness.
I've been musing whether or not this state is actually better than the way it used to be. I might have been frustrated and crass, but I also had a sense of humor and enjoyment. It's hard to decide. This doesn't seem like a bad way to be, really.
I'm sure things will return to normal eventually. Maybe. Or whatever approximation of normal exists for me. Time will tell, I suppose.

I'm sure things will return to normal eventually. Maybe. Or whatever approximation of normal exists for me. Time will tell, I suppose.
Random thoughts
Posted 13 years agoSome of you noticed that I posted some sketches yesterday to my scraps gallery. I'm going to try and upload sketches at least 4 days a week. I'd do it more, but school and homework sort of get in the way (though, ironically, I actually posted the second one yesterday during class). I might not be very good, but seeing as how I've just started, it's not like I expect to be X3 Hopefully, I'll get better as time goes on. Incidentally, I'd appreciate critique on any and all future sketches.
Ampersand is truly perplexing me. He's becoming incredibly popular among the fans of Weaselgrease's works (and Wooz himself). This is made all the more confusing since I developed his personality and history on the fly after the first sketch of him was completed. I hadn't originally intended to make such a deep character, and I certainly had no expectations of him gaining this kind of recognition. I would never have guessed that a character that was designed on a random whim would basically start to rival some of Wooz's more well-known toons, and has more or less become the canon love-interest of one! (This doesn't apply to MadDog's stories, but rather as part of Wooz's universe as a whole).
Massage therapy is going well~. My teachers all have different styles, which is not inherently a bad thing, but it does make it difficult to keep up which teachers want me to do what a certain way. I heard that after this semester, even though I'm going for my associate's degree, I can get my certification (which basically means I can charge for my massages, fuck all what the college says). I may look into that. I'm looking forward with no small amount of excitement to both reflexology (foot-focused massages) and reiki (energy massage) next semester, but that's somewhat counteracted by my disdain for business class, which will require me to dress up every week. Oh well. It's only for one semester. I still haven't decided if I'm going to specialize in any area of massage (animal, sports, therapeutic, medical, spa, etc...). I have time to think about it. I'm leaning towards spa, but it's still early.
Anywho, I need to do some more chores around here and finish up my homework for tomorrow. So I'm off! *Ninjapoofs away*
