Posting my tutorial for free
General | Posted 11 years agoquite some time ago, I created a tutorial for HTML: Website Creation In Plain English. It's outdated now, so I'm posting it for free, with plans to update it to HTML5.
So have a read, let me know what you think of it.

To post or not to post--that is the question
General | Posted 12 years agoWhether anyone would be interested in a radio play I helped write back in 1995 or if it should simply remain on the floppy disk where I found it.
Yes, I'm going through old floppies, and some of them still have stuff on them!
Oh, and Gene? How can I get a game installer intended for DOS to work on Windows 7?

Basalt City Retcons
General | Posted 12 years agoI'd like to restart The Basalt City Chronicles, and there's a few things I'm going to retcon.
1) Daniel's history. The horse that brought him into no-holds-barred fighting is named Yisugiin Tsakhia guai; a Mongol Horse. He is Dan's trainer and Keeper (basically controls what fights Daniel gets into, who trains him, etc.) The Wyld Stallyons are the name of the stable he runs. He's one of the better Keepers, but is kind of a shady character. Ted Clydesdale says the hardest thing he ever did was allow Dan to go back to Tsakhia.
(By the way, Mr. Catlow, how would I'Brolent regard someone who's not outright criminal, but shady?)
2) The Empire will not be quite as backward as it was depicted--there will be more than one computer, but certainly they'll all be museum pieces.
3) There won't be a set timetable for the Prophecy; there will be signs that the volcano's going to blow, but no set schedule.
4) Lord Kosgan. Yes, he still regrets the issues he had with his father, but his speech won't be as mangled--simply very formal and somewhat archaic.
There's a few other things I'll change, but those are the big things. Lorec will still be as big a troublemaker as ever.

The Ref Needs Glasses!
General | Posted 12 years agoApril 13, 2013 was the first day that a referee wore glasses at an Eston, Saskachewan Prairie Wrestling Alliance show...
Ah, who am I kidding, of COURSE it was the first time; this was the first PWA show in Eston ever.
It was a long drive. Here's the route I took going there and the route I took going home.
So, the good points: Sold-out show. My first time reffing (and yes, I have poor vision, I have a fear of putting anything in my eyes, such as contact lenses, and thus I wore glasses).
I think I did okay--certainly, the wrestlers didn't complain, but I did get a few pointers on being a ref (hey, I'm new). Now I know why Lance Storm says he doesn't remember most of his matches; I can barely remember mine either.
Afterwards, hometown hero Dusty Adonis took us all out to the bar, and then we headed for his house to sleep. I had an awesome time at the bar, remaining mostly sober (I did have a couple of drinks, but not many). I wanted to head home right away, but Dusty pointed out that the weather was so bad the roads were closed; no going home for me.
So I crashed with the rest of the wrestlers at his place. Man, talk about a crowded house!
Those were the good points. But there were a few bad points, too.
The weather. The drive. The bloody weather. The freaking drive. Did I mention the weather and the drive? Did I? Well, I'll mention them again. THE HORRIBLE WEATHER AND THE GODAWFUL DRIVE!
A snowstorm warning was out, and I had to deal with bloody awful roads. Both going there and coming back, I got stuck going on Highway 44 in Saskachewan. I slid off the road just east of Mantario going there, and got stuck ON the drifted-in highway just east of Madison going back. *Adds good point*: Farmers who get me out of some serious jams. I had originally planned to go back Saturday night, but the roads were closed due to the snowstorm. Sunday, I was able to return. I should have avoided Highway 44, and simply gon straight north from Eston, but I didn't, and, as I said, I got stuck on the highway.
I wouldn't have minded the long drive, but the weather made it quite the ordeal.
Ah, well. If there's another Eston show, hopefully the weather will be better. And now that I've reffed for the PWA, hopefully, I'll get to do it again.

Dear Gene Catlow and CatsWhisker...
General | Posted 12 years agoHow DO you guys avoid writing yourselves into corners? The reason my Basalt City Chronicles hasn't been updated in a while is, well... with the Prophecy, I've done precisely that. >_< I'm honestly tempted to cut the chapters (or move them to scraps) and restart.

Stuck
General | Posted 13 years agoI haven't updated A Fighter's Tale in about two years, and it's for a really simple reason: I'm stuck. I've kind of written myself into a corner, I can see the long view but not the short...
So, yeah. Not sure if one could call this a dead fic or one that's hibernating, but if I write a chapter that glosses over a LOT of what happens in the Basalt City--it's just trying to get the story GOING again.

General | Posted 13 years agoChanging my avatar
General | Posted 13 years agoMy avatar is almost half-a-year out-of-date, so I changed it.
Day of sadness, day of joy.
General | Posted 13 years agoI lost my canine companion of 13 or so years today. Randy became physically ill last night, so I scheduled an appointment with the vet. I also realized he was really boney and had no appetite. The vet flat-out said he was emaciated. Because he's so darned shaggy, it was hard for me to tell HOW skinny he was. If he had Rottweiler's fur, you could have seen his ribs, but he had Alsatian fur instead, which meant his fur hid it. Sadly, the diagnosis was lung cancer, which meant I had to have him put to sleep.
But not all was sadness today. I took my parents out for their 39th anniversary--I actually got to take my parents out for dinner.

"Website Creation In Plain English" CD Preview Online
General | Posted 13 years agoAs I stated in a previous journal, I have written a sizeable tutorial on (X)HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which is being offered on CD.
I have posted a preview version online at http://www.mrinitialman.com/BookDemo/ , containing the following chapters: Prologue, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents, Introducing (X)HTML, Introduction To CSS, Dynamic Behavior And Scripting, The Periodic Table of (X)HTML Elements, and Named CSS Colours. Please check it out and let me know if you're interested in a copy.
Those of you with Linux Systems and Macs, I'd particularly like your feedback for two features of the book: Holding down "P" and clicking on a paragraph, header, table caption, list item, or definition term, or image should bring up a menu that allows you to set a page break; holding down "I" and clicking on an image should allow you to resize the image. I've tested these on Windows 7 and XP, but I don't know if they work on other operating systems.

General | Posted 13 years ago"Website Creation In Plain English" CDs for sale.
General | Posted 13 years agoSince 2010, I've been working on a book called Website Creation In Plain English. At first, I thought that I could publish it as a print book, but that never came to fruition. But now, I believe I have something I can burn to CD and sell that way.
It teaches (X)HTML, CSS (which is how you decorate a site), and JavaScript (which allows users to interact with the page).
Each chapter is its own webpage, and you can view the code and see the code of webpages in completely valid XHTML 1.0. It has tools that go with the chapters themselves that allow you to set page breaks and image sizes to make the whole thing more print-friendly.
It also has some extra webpages. Two of these webpages help you find colours you like.; One helps you choose a colour scheme by showing how well (or how badly) colours go with each other. One shows you the code of a simple webpage and highlights various parts of it.
This is a tutorial written by a guy who's been doing websites the hard way for several years now--someone who's done them both the crap way and the good way, and knows why the good way works better.
And I'm offering these CDs for $20. Any takers?

Meme: Write Up The Band!

Seeing Ceiling
General | Posted 14 years agoSeeing Ceiling is my webcomic, which (sort of) chronicles my training as a professional wrestler and (if it works out) my time in the industry itself. The phrase "seeing ceiling" refers to getting pinned--which is going to happen a lot as I learn my way and while I'm still paying my dues (and even a late fee).
I am taking SOME artistic license in this comic--but not much. Instead of exaggerating, I'm giving you the gist of what really happened. For example,m the e-mail exchange between me and Lance Storm was much longer than the comic would describe, but he DID warn me about the unlikelyhood of getting into WWE.

News from my life:
General | Posted 14 years agoOn January 4, 2012, I will begin training as a professional wrestler. I'm attending the Storm Wrestling Academy (run by Lance Storm) in Calgary. I've never been so nervous in my life--for many reasons, some of which my Christian friends swear don't make sense.
So... 2012 is gonna be an interesting year.
