May leave the FBA
General | Posted 14 years agoBetween depression, work, and a crapload of other serious issues, I may leave the FBA for good. If any of you think it's because
buckhopper is gonna turn the site upside down, I want to tell you that you've got it all ass-backwards: He had to take over the site because I did jack-all with it! Even between seasons, when I had a chance, I didn't do anything, leaving HIM to struggle with Google Docs.
Nor did I do much with the Royals, leaving a big storyline unresolved (spoiler: Dreysanius broke his wife's arm in an arm-wrestling match over the remote; at the hospital, she had a bad reaction to pain meds).
So, long story short, I'm not exactly a good contributer to the FBA, so who wants the Royals, and who wants my FBA-only characters?

FurFright Journal
General | Posted 14 years agoI have returned from FF.
First, the one problem I had: I wish if someone had gotten sick of me playing my recorders, they'd let ME know instead of telling the con staff. I'd have gladly held my peace in the sign-up line.
That being said, I'd gotten a lot of people who liked my recorder, especially jamming with those on the piano. When I get a chance, I shall post pics of my recorders for your viewing pleasure.
It was good to be with
doccougar and to see FBA fellows
jtigerclaw,
katalina,
farallon,
Christaphorac,
o-kemono and others there.
I also got to get a LOAD of commissions, which I shall post... eventually. I haven't a scanner at the moment.
The commissions that I got were:
Kenter Acrutar reading in Church Slavonic to his grandfather Josef Alreya (
Christaphorac, waiting for sketch)
Tors Beers cornered (
Rabbi-Tom, complete)
Tors Beers after a fight (
Rabbi-Tom, complete)
Dreysanius with a young Kenter, Kenter holding a wrestling trophy (
HollyAnn, waiting for sketch)
Dreysanius with Sonya Acrutar--at least, that's what I think I asked for (
O-Kemono, waiting for sketch)
Dreysanius fighting with Josef (
Turkituk, waiting for sketch)
Emperor Zaykar (
Shuri, complete).
Oh, and I hope the rest of you enjoyed my recorder playing. Eventually, I shall have sheaths for them so I can carry them around fully assembled.

Anyone have room at FurFright? I will be in attendance.
General | Posted 14 years agoI'm arriving on the 12th and will be leaving on the 17th.
UPDATE:
Actually, I've managed to book a room at the Super 8 Hotel, so all is good. :)

More good FBA News:
General | Posted 14 years agoThe page for setting up new teams is finished. Now the El Paso Whips and the new Winnipeg Team can be added. One question remains: what to do about the Royals' changed status.
BTW, Buck Hopper--did you get my request for a retcon?

FBA Admins! Important News!
General | Posted 14 years agoAt last--at LONG last--teams can be edited. There will--someday--be a page where you can change a team's three-character code. That page isn't even started yet.
However, an existing team CAN be created. My next project WILL be creating a page where teams can be added.
I am so sorry for the very long delay. It's been literally months since I touched these pages.

Life's getting better... And an RMH Retcon
General | Posted 14 years agoI have a USB keyboard, which is working well. My E-Mail porogram was being a goit, which means that the e-mails from the guy I irritated weren't coming through (all I will say is that all is well between us).
If I can get
buckhopper's permission, I'm doing a bit of a Retcon on the Rocky Mountain House Royals.
Brock Horace Thiessen never played.
When the Royals became a pro team, he stopped actually playing and became their first coach (although, being 76 at the time, he was definately the oldest coach in the league, and he remained in the saddle for 20 years). Having some professional experience behind him definately helped, but... Let's just say his biggest obstacle to getting a good team together was the team's owner. Alan Smith clearly had no idea how to run a team, which resulted in a virtually monolithic lineup. The team has made no trades since its founding, partially because Alan was a git in the early years, partially because he had a habit of making drafts based on personal whim, resulting in players that nobody else really wanted. The RMH became a big stain on someone's resume (though most former players ended up on other teams after their contracts ran out).
They do hold the record for oldest rookie, though. One of the members that DID stay on the hardwood when the team joined was in his late 30s.
Also, I have been asked about my concept of "rookie captains"--rookies who are team captains--and how the HECK that would happen. It's very simple: Every rookie captain has occurred during the respective team's debut season. The first six occurred because, as 1961-1962 was the FBA's debut season, EVERYONE was a rookie. The Hamilton Mariners and Rocky Mountain House Royals had it happen, as they were already existing teams, and thus had captains. Technically, a rookie captain could happen at any point of a team's history, but for obvious reasons, it's only during a team's debut season--if then.
Further question to Buck Hopper's player (I hope he reads this). Could Buck Hopper recognize an "athlete" who has no idea what he's doing, even if the sport in question is NOT basketball?
Oh, and one last note: I've been 31 for a bit over a week (since the 15th, actually). Depressing thought.

Well, life's become more difficult...
General | Posted 14 years agoAnd it's pretty much all my doing.
To begin with, I have to type this entry on two keyboards--I accidently spilled Schnapps on my laptop, and a few keys aren't working. I have a USB keyboard--but it's not entirely functional either, which means I need both.
Second, in a shared universe I (sorta) participate in, I managed to piss off the guy in charge Royally by making canon suggestions that were quite simply retarded. You know who you are, and I'm really, really sorry.
So if I'm not around much, it's a combination of looking for a USB keyboard that works fully and trying to get the taste of foot out of my idiot mouth.

I figured out something I've been curious about for YEARS:
General | Posted 14 years agoThe lowest common multiple of every integer from 1 through 100 is 69,720,375,229,712,477,164,533,808,935,312,303,556,800.
That is all.
That is all.
Okay, Harper...
General | Posted 14 years agoYou've got your majority. You stocked the Senate with your own picks.
Time to show if you were sincere about reforming politics.
Oh, and Duceppe? Seems like Quebec is as sick of you as the rest of Canada is.

Canadians, GET A CLUE!
General | Posted 14 years agoMy biggest pet peeve about a lot of the anti-Harper crowd is they refuse to believe that he was not in control of parliament. A Minority Government is when Party A holds the most seats in the House of Commons, but less than parties B, C, and D put together. For example, Party A might hold 45% of the seats, but B might hold 30%, C could hold 20%, and D could hold 5%--in other words, A does not have the majority.
We have five parties: The Conservatives, The Liberals, The New Democrat Party, The Green Party, and the Bloc Quebecois (this one has absolutely no business being IN parliament, but they are.)
Harper was in this position. Yes, he promised a lot of reforms. Thing is, to ram those reforms through, he would have to get the support of one of the other parties--none of which wanted those reforms.
Those parties forced him into some stupid budgets that he didn't want to put through, but it was put them through or have the government fall. That was his position.
I'm voting for Harper, and I will reserve my judgement for when he's ACTUALLY IN A POSITION to do what he promised.
Until then, leftloonies, GET A CLUE.

Still alive...
General | Posted 14 years agoI haven't died or anything, just hit a MAJOR wall of work mixed with apathy. Seriously, that's why virtually all my furry projects--the Basalt City Chronicles, the FBA in general (specifically the website and the conclusion to the Acrutar abuse scandal), everything--have been gathering dust.
I want to get back at these things, but my mind has basically crashed lately. Hopefully, I can get back at it, but I dunno when that will be.
Until then... yeah, I'm still breathing.

Website Update
General | Posted 15 years agoOkay, I did some work on the Player entry form, and I think it works. Haven't tested it out on the actual site but my copy works okay.
What I did was create a table of special characters. Using JavaScript, clicking on a bit of text that says "special characters" in the top-right corner will allow you to choose characters from their base letters (using the English Alphabet). Clicking any of the base letters will show you the options based on those letters. So I no longer have to worry about displaying names like, say, Stefan Kikovic or Jakob Lyska, both of whome have weird letters in their last names.
In short, the player entry/updating form is pretty much complete.
Also, I've a page that allows you to say which team a player is on.

IMPORTANT FBA SITE NEWS
General | Posted 15 years agoOn the Players Information page, there is a new item added: "Teams". Through this, you can select which team a player is on. However, I am still working on depth charts and a way to describe free agencies.
Writing Projects and lack of output.
General | Posted 15 years agoWell, I think I'm going to post "After The Punchline", even though
paulshep hasn't okayed it. It should have been posted around July, but never was. So, sorry Paul, I can only hope you like it.
Secondly, I've been really slow on the site and on writing. I'm sorry. With my workload, I am SAPPED. I have had absolutely no creative drive in months. It sucks. :( I need to continue on the FBA site; I need to write the conclusion to the the saga where Sonya gets her arm broken--by her husband; I need to continue on the Basalt City Chronicles; I need to continue on my HTML book...
And I'm freaking sapped.

Finally got my database ERD done...
General | Posted 15 years agohttp://admin.furrybasketball.com/Database.svg I must say, Scalar Vector Graphics don't work all that badly for this sort of thing.
On the other paw, it's a little humbling when experts look at my database design and shudder...

Needed: A Good Name For A Daytime Women's Talk Show

It's now official:
General | Posted 15 years agoThe FBA database is now more complex than the Coach Random one ever was. I never used VIEWs with the old Coach Random database, but I am with this one. I had to to so in order to get the game rankings right.
On my site coding:
General | Posted 15 years agoI have been asked by some why I don't ask someone to join me in this website work. My reason is simple: I have a very singular way of doing things, and the code gets to be quite complex.
If someone can figure out the following query, and even make it more efficient, I'll gladly send them a copy of the coding and the database backup. I know what the query does, since I wrote it myself.
The SQL Query:

General | Posted 15 years agoI've read
addlesee's writing on the Furry Fandom, and giving it some thought, I realized that pornography is one of my biggest problems--to be specific, my obsession with it.
One thing I did today was go through my favorites list and unfave almost all the (with I think one exception: I faved it because it was funny, not because it was sexy). It also allowed me to view favorites I haven't looked at in a long time. For example:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1254608/ -- By
silverwolfentertainment.
Dreysanius Acrutar, working on his muscles. He was a pro wrestler until he was left a parapelegic in a motorcycle accident. His loved ones got him out of his funk by getting him into powerlifting, where he met fellow parapelegic Josef Alreya, who became his coach. Through Josef, he met his future wife Sonya. He now runs the Wild Side Wrestling Federation, and Josef is one of the coaches there. The two maintain a very visible presence backstage, and more than one backstage vignette has featured the two getting into (as Mr. Addlesee would put it) a pier-sixer.
He HAS made his share of mistakes: Parondor Calhoren was a body builder hired because a) he was REALLY tall (7'6"), b) looked damned hot in tights, and c) a friend of Dreysanius. The results were horrible. (Parondor did go to a wrestling school after a few months, returned a couple years later, and is now reasonably skilled and massively over). And an actual in-ring wrestling match between he and his father-in-law, meant to solidify themselves as big badass bears, only succeeded in creeping out everyone in the audience.
Oh, here the two inlaws are together: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2325937/

The BenDragons. Oh, the BenDragons
This was an idiotic idea I had years ago when I was part of the Redwall Online Community. They were 8 brothers (and later 1 sister, who was created by someone else) who were evil wolves of demonic heritage and one was very openly a vampire (the rest were vampires too, but were more subtle). Oh, and each had a title corresponding to a colour in the rainbow except for the eldest Kabiathar the Black and his sister Mesyra the White. The others were:
Kalthorakh the Red
Katraskar the Orange
Khandrakh the Yellow
Olkran the Green
Kholdragus the Blue
Kharack the Indigo (the one pictured here)
Katreyvan the Purple
Kharack is, well--he is deeply religious, having given himself over entirely to his ancestor and deity, known as the Darkest Dragon. Because of this, he was essentially a demon incarnate and by far the most murderous and destructive of the brothers (Kabiathar's very careful using him. Turning him loose is like tearing down a house by dropping an atomic bomb).
Oh, last I heard, one of my friends from that time (same guy who nicknamed me Mr. Initial Man years back) was playing a character named Kammyln the Amber. We agreed he is the son of Mesyra and Kalthorakh, and not a mote nicer than his parents. Yes, his parents were siblings. That's not meant to be hot, that's meant to be disgusting and a sign of how degenerate the family was.
A related group of characters were the Windschreieners, which also shared their appetites. They weren't much better.
addlesee's writing on the Furry Fandom, and giving it some thought, I realized that pornography is one of my biggest problems--to be specific, my obsession with it.One thing I did today was go through my favorites list and unfave almost all the (with I think one exception: I faved it because it was funny, not because it was sexy). It also allowed me to view favorites I haven't looked at in a long time. For example:

silverwolfentertainment.

Unwatching and site news
General | Posted 15 years agoOkay, first of all, I'm removing several accounts from my watchlist. These people either do a great deal of artwork I'm uncomfortable with, have styles I don't like, haven't uploaded in years, or simply have nothing in their accounts. If you see something about a removed watch from me, it's nothing against you; I'm just doing some housecleaning.
Also, I'm gonna look for homes for my websites. Yeah, I may put up a new Furnation website for Coach Random; it's virtually the only website that will work as a static page.
My own website won't work so well like that, and the FBA webpage pretty much needs PHP+ an SQL-based database.

Furtopia is shutting down its webhosting service.

Oh. Crap.
The Coach Random website has been XML for a long time now, and I could seriously make it simple HTML; it's not gonna be updated now (It's been what? 7 years?)
My own website would be a pain in the butt, but I could do static HTML for that.
The FBA website? Not a freaking chance. It NEEDS MySQL and PHP to function, and that is the end of it. Any suggestions?

Now we can properly add players:
General | Posted 15 years agoThe stats page of the Admin section is finally up. admins can enter physical stats (height, weight), along with season stats (PPG, RPG, APG, SPG, BPG, FG%, PT%, and 3PT%). I've also added some data-checking to make sure the stats can be inserted without raising a SQL error.
jtigerclaw,
buckhopper, and
steviemaxwell, you're all in the system and can log in as adminstrators. If you need your login info, I can send you a note.
I do NOT have a page yet in place which assigns players to teams, numbers to players, or sets up depth charts--yet. Nor do I have a trade table yet (I'd need info on how that works). But slowly but surely, the webpage is getting done.
I'm REALLY sorry this has taken so long. Maybe next season, I'll have it done, and Buck and the rest can simply take charge.
Technical Stuff
The error checking was designed to keep the form from submitting information the database couldn't accept. The "submit" button (actually an input element) was set to type "button", which does not submit the form. However, I added an onmousedown event that did a bunch of error checking. The onmousedown event is triggered when you press down on a mouse-button; onclick is when you press and release. If there was an error, an alert box popped up warning you of issues. If all was well, the button was changed to type "submit", which, upon releasing the mousebutton (which made it a mouse click), submitted the entire form.
I still have to use JavaScript to build the queries, as I do believe that their is a limit to how many $_POST fields I can submit (at least JTigerclaw and I ran into this problem with the XML-based website's box-scores form, though Furtopia has changed since) and the player stats form can easily go over that limit. Building the query through JavaScript allows me to assign the resulting query to a single field, and send THAT through the $_POST instead.

Feeling Overwhelmed...
General | Posted 15 years agoOne of the biggest problems I have with the FBA site is my singular way of doing things. I take pride in perfectly valid HTML, valid CSS, and JavaScript that doesn't raise so much as a warning.
But there's more: I've got a bunch of functions and so on that I've made for use on the website, and I'm not sure how much sense my database looks. I know I have to set up a page for player statistics, I have to set up a page to assign players to teams, I have to set up a page to set up depth charts, I have to...
I'm thinking I have to learn to trust someone else with the framework I set up as well. But... what if the site only makes sense to me?
I really hate to sound pretentious, but if I let anyone else work on the site, I want someone who really knows what they're doing.
