what i really like about my job. cheesy job rant time
Posted 13 years agookay, guys, if you don't like cheesy or things that are so cute it's barf worthy, you're not going to want to read this, lol. i'm literally going to talk about children, teddy bears, santa claus, wishes, and magic this whole time.
okay, so, first of all, i work at build-a-bear in downtown disney, which is right up against disneyland.
already the happiest fucking place on earth, then they added teddy bears
the job is rather tedious and repetitive... they have my main job as a stuffer, which is when you have your bear chosen out, and i'm the person who helps you stuff it and i talk to you and everything. i have to do the same thing every time; hi kid, do you want a sound, do you want a scent, do you want a beating heart or a regular heart, okay step on the pedal, let's do the heart ceremony, k put it in your bear, yayyyy done
i used to work with children taking photos, also in downtown disney, which made them laugh and stuff, and that was fantastic! i loved my job! but there's a couple things that make my job truly special that is completely unique to it, and that's what the children do when you stuff their bears. it's truly actually magical, in my opinion. when you do the heart ceremony (when you pick out a little heart to put in your stuffed animal), no matter what i make you do... dance, play, etc, i always ask them to make a wish and kiss the heart before they put it in their bear, and that's when the magic happens. you can tell when a kid is ACTUALLY making a wish with all of their heart and they truly believe in it, and it's the coolest thing in the world. every single one takes a big breath, holds that heart a little tighter, and shuts their eyes tight. it's so cool. to me, that makes all of the tedious work totally worth it, just for that little magical moment.
right now it's "holiday time" at build-a-bear, so i talk about santa a lot to little kids. this is another cool part. if you really take the time to talk to a kid, you find out how smart, funny, and great they all are. when i ask them about santa, they'll go on and on about how good they've been that year and what they could do better, but that they hope santa will come. i had one kid say that all they wanted from santa that year was a big hug. i had another kid who told me that their favorite part about christmas is making cookies for santa, because she wants him to be happy. they were both around five or four years old, and they were really smart and cool. it really makes me wish that i still believed in things like santa claus and the easter bunny, and all of that (haha, i just went to see rise of the guardians too, and i fucking LOVED it. ask me for a movie review), because i want to feel how they feel! they still feel magic.
really, some of the absolute funniest and coolest people that i've ever met are little kids and toddlers. some people don't like kids 'cause they're loud, young, still not sure how to handle some basic things like being polite, etc... but really, when you talk to as many kids as i have in the past year, they are ALL amazing. they might be on their best behavior for mommy and daddy, sure, but they all have interesting things to say. at my old job, this kid who just turned five told me everything he knew about every single indiana jones movie, star wars movie, about all of his legos and that he was already on the third harry potter book. when i told him to give me a high five, he ran back a little bit, and full on charged me with the best high five i've ever received. he was such a cool kid. his name was atticus. another little girl, at this job now, when i was stuffing her bear said the funniest damn thing ever. when i stuff a bear, i always tell them that i'm making them super smart when i stuff their head. i swear, this little girl said "don't make him too smart. i want him to be kind of dumb so he'll listen to me." i laughed my fucking ass off forever. i'm still laughing about it. she was only 7 years old! her name was brianna. right now, we have seasonal stuffed animals like rudolph, clarice, and the grinch. tonight, this little girl named jasmine got a rudolph toy. i've never seen someone so happy to get a toy in my life. she grabbed my hand and jumped up and down and told me that she dreamed about getting a build a bear for as long as she could remember, and when she saw rudolph on a commercial, he was the perfect one and she was so happy to finally get him, and it was a dream come true. she's eight years old. she was jumping up and down, and when i finished him, i turned on his light (his red nose glows), and the look on her face was wonderful. i gave him to her, and she held him so tight and bounced up and down so much, i thought she was going to rocket into space.
that's what makes me really happy. the kids might not remember me, but they'll remember that truly magical moment forever. they may not remember the exact feeling, but they'll feel their childhood and the nostalgia, which feels so amazing, and they'll remember the magic. it's why i collect pokemon and listen to the old theme to ecruteak city before i go to bed sometimes. that nostalgic feeling that reminds me that there will always be a little magic left in me.

Posted 13 years agoit has become nearly impossible for me to find a faux fur color even remotely close to juno's markings (on her face, underside, legs), and i've come to the conclusion that i'll probably need to have some white fur custom dyed. i'm way too afraid to do it myself, and i'd be completely willing to pay someone to do it. i'd buy the fur and ship it to them, they'd dye it, etc, everyone's happy. now, the question is, who would be willing to do this? do you guys know ANYONE who would be willing to dye some faux fur? PLEASE post. i'm commissioning

but we've run into a problem
juno has three shades of a greyish color, her lightest coat, markings, and darker markings (her saddle back)
they have some fur chosen out for her lightest grey shade and her saddle back markings, but we don't have a charcoalish color for her main markings, and it's necessary to have it a lighter color than her saddle markings
i need your help, guys! please please PLEASE post some faux fur websites!

and today and thursday are my last days working at my shack EVER 'cause it's closing on saturday foreverever
which is so fucking sad
BUT I AM THE MASTER AT FINDING COOL JOBS APPARENTLY
AND IT IS TIME FOR A NEW BEGINNING

i get to keep my friends from the other booths

this has made my week SO MUCH BETTER
i've already been invited to build a bear's christmas potluck

Posted 13 years agowell, i found out today that my booth at disneyland is being shut down for good on november 3rd.
thank goodness that i applied to build a bear and got the second interview, but that still doesn't guarantee me a job...
i'm so depressed and distraught over this
i absolutely LOVE my job
i don't even care about the money
i've worked there for five months and i haven't even spent a single paycheck yet
all i care about are my coworkers and my customers
i love to see the children laugh and smile
i love to talk with my coworkers and have fun taking pictures and just generally being super happy
this is so depressing
i don't NEED the money, necessarily
but my coworkers do
they need it
i feel so terrible for them
especially my boss, who's worked there for 8 years
this is awful
fuck, man
i cried for a good hour after he called me
and my other coworker julia texted me
she was so sad
what i feel REALLY bad about is that we have a 65 year old man working with us six days out of the week to pay for his home
he lives all alone, and his family is in arizona
he's just barely getting by, it's so terrible
i was just talking to him today in fact, and he was telling me that he needed to get an extra job, 'cause he couldn't handle just scraping by anymore
i wonder how he feels now
it makes me so sad

out of the eight girls, they chose me for the second interview c:
i took some time to show them some of my sewing projects, and they were ecstatic!
they scheduled me for my second interview tomorrow! i'm so excited!
i really hope that i have this in the bag

super duper duper terrified of the dark
like, it's so bad it's crippling
and i'll stand in a lit doorway for an hour or so, too scared to take the five steps it takes to get back to my room
but my dog is fucking awesome
and she'll come rescue me
she's super tiny, but i feel so safe
sometimes she'll bite onto my sleeve and tug me down the hallway
or she'll lead me into the kitchen if i'm looking that way
she'll wait for me if i get too scared and freeze up, or she'll do a trick (she dances) and make me feel better
she's so cool, guys
what's extra cool is that i didn't teach her to do this, she does it on her own
i got hungry just now, and i wanted to make tomato soup with some cheese
but we keep our soup cans outside
and i was too scared to go out the door (my eyes were playing tricks on me and i thought i saw something in the living room oh god)
