Suggestions for general improvements
General | Posted 13 years agoHello! This evening I made the killer mistake of looking through the galleries of all my favourite artists. It was really fun and inspiring but now I kind of want to ask; what do you think I could do better? Just in general, really, not looking for "this picture was terrible because..." type stuff, more like "Work on this! Do more that!".
(I don't usually ask for specific critique because I'm horrendously sensitive and tend to read most criticism as "you might as well just kill yourself" - I'm trying to be better at manning up, but I'm not quite there yet :D)
Personally I think I need to work harder on shading. I like hatching a lot but I keep making horrible blurry messes of shading where it would probably look better with crisper edges and stuff. But I'm too scared of getting it wrong to do anything too stark!
So please please give me some pointers on what to improve on/get rid of so that I can improve and make more people happy~

Commissions: Full!
General | Posted 13 years agoOkay so I got some time off work, so I'm opening for a few commissions!
Just a few, mind, I'm a really slow arter and I don't want to get swamped. Although, being a gator, you'd think I like that. BUT I DIGRESS.
Prices as follows:
Full colour, full body, no/super-simple background: £8.
Full-colour half body: £6
Lineart, full body: £6
Lineart, half body: £5
I'd rather do one character only, but if you want multiple characters or a reference sheet, make me an offer! I mean cash money! I'm happy to take direction about poses and stuff, and also yes, I will draw your character in Adult Situations - but I reserve the right to say no if it's really not my thing. I'll submit that stuff to my other account,
quilldesade
I'm only going to take five for now - reply here or DM me on twitter QuillGator for a spot. Oh, and payment is by Paypal!
So far:
brockworth - DONE
pandaririn - DONE
shirosirius - DONE
evilmercenary - DONE
Magnus_Streifengrauer - DONE
benjien - DONE
smudgerat - DONE
darth-kitsu - DONE

General | Posted 13 years agoOkay so I'm sort of having a week off work soon and since I'm kind of hoping to get an awesome gator tattoo at some point, I figured I might open for commissions.
It's not definite yet so I guess I'm just asking whether anyone would be interested in a fullbody, full colour pinup-style picture, and how much do you think I ought to charge? I'm thinking £8 but I'm worried nobody would be willing to pay.

New account
General | Posted 14 years agoOkay so I got a new account for adult arts - I don't imagine I'll be using it all that often, but I've moved all my more risqué stuff from here over to
QuilldeSade
And I don't even have an avatar for it yet, because I haven't finished creating my new fursona D:
So if I drew adult stuff for you in the past, it can now be viewed at my new account.

New Year's Resolutions!
General | Posted 14 years agoOnly in art terms of course, no need to broadcast my personal life :D
1. Further refine my style! People sometimes actually say they like my style and it's distinctive and stuff, and that makes me really happy. But I think I need to improve. Make it more consistent. And darker!
2. Learn to paint backgrounds. I have been wussing out of that for far too long. I've been reading up on colour theory and how Hanna-Barbera's artists used to do it in Ye Olden Times, and I think that style of background would really suit the things I draw. So expect backgrounds!
3. POSSIBLY see about making a new character and even a new account to uh...explore more adult things? Sort of for the purposes of self-expression, really. Probably mostly involve pictures of furries being tied up, but eh, I never said I was imaginative. Just depraved :D
Oh um, anything else? Things you think I should work on? Maybe? Do let me know.

Headshots/busts
General | Posted 14 years agoI took on a couple of requests a while back and for some reason I'm having huge trouble with them. Both are pretty detailed and specific and I guess it's been a while since I've actually drawn anything "properly" and it's kind of stressful. Can't seem to think of poses/themes, in particular.
So I thought - practice! With headshots/busts! Free ones!
I guess I'll take, um, three? Is three okay? I think any more would be too much. I might do more though. Reply if you want one!

I'm officially broke!
General | Posted 14 years agoNot a begging journal or anything uncouth like that; just thought I should say that due to my official status as Having No Money (my funding for next year fell though so I need to get some thousands of pounds together by October, zomg), I won't be able to go to any meets for the foreseeable future, and also since I'll have to look for some part time work as well as all the studying, I don't think I'll have much time for arts.
So consider me on hiatus from everything until I can get enough money together to sort myself out! And wish me luck!

Free Art (full)
General | Posted 14 years agoFree Art is now closed!
I'm just going to pick my three favourite fursonas and draw those since I got more replies than I thought it would!
Probably Katbat, Kite and Ririn, but I might add more if I have time <3

Kind of a self-indulgent request
General | Posted 15 years agoBut uh...indulge me?
I'm one of those gators who is always dissatisfied, you know? Like whatever I do, I always half-want to do something else, or do it differently, or something. So I never feel like i can settle on an art style because I'm always drooling over other people's work and thinking "how did they do it like that?!" Also means I always, always hate my own work.
My request is: tell me, what do you like best in my gallery? Favourite pic? Preferably not just "the one of me" because that kinda defeats the point :P
But yeah, tell me what kind of things I've drawn that you like because I never have any idea what works and what doesn't and I'm sick of being such a butterfly!

MY NAME IS QUILL
General | Posted 15 years agoMonths and months ago I changed it.
Murmur is just the name that happens to be on my FA account.
MY NAME IS NOT MURMUR, MURMER, MURRMURR OR ANY OTHER PERMUTATION THEREOF.
My name is Quill.
Thank you, and goodnight.

General | Posted 15 years agoTiny, tiny, tiny drawings
General | Posted 15 years agoDoes anyone else find it really hard to draw on a scale larger than, say, A5 at the very largest?
I'm just curious really, ever since I can remember I've made all my drawings really small and whenever I try to make them larger I make tonnes of silly errors. It's fine for scannable sketches but for traditional colouring it really sucks!
So yeah, anyone else have this? Or even the reverse of it?
[Curiosity did not kill the cat, it got eaten by the even more curious giant alligator.]

its kind of bad
General | Posted 15 years agoWhen you see your own art (quality and popularity) going downhill but there's nothing you can seem to do about it!
Gah, must just be having a bad patch or something.

The old "feral vs anthro" thing
General | Posted 15 years agoLately, not that anyone cares (and why should they, anyway? But that's another even less interesting rant) I think I prefer feral animals to anthro ones.
Not Disney though!
In fact, I don't even bother looking for anthro art anymore, I just come in here to check messages.
Maybe I should be practising drawing real animals instead of manimals?
Does anyone call furries "manimals"? Can we start doing that, if not? Feminists can call them "womanimals" if they like.
Maybe shouldn't write journals when this tired, k?

Pixel Art/Sprites
General | Posted 15 years agoMy graphics tablet broke, which is sad, but its meant that now I have time to learn how to do sprites/pixel art.
So I got Pixen for my macbook since I heard it was good, opened a new file and.. I have no idea where to go from here!
Does anyone have any tips or tutorial links? Anything at all for the absolute beginner would be great!
Thankyou!

General | Posted 15 years agoAnd I have to send it to Germany to he repaired, which apparently could take a month.
Guess I'm on hiatus til then. Oh well, maybe I shall work on my beecatsuit, and maybe practice drawing with a Real Actual Pen.
A bientot, furs!

Getting Art You Kind Of Don't Really Like Much
General | Posted 15 years ago(Note: This is not me trying to say I hate any art anyone has given me! At all!)
So.
I am really, really inconsistent in my drawing quality. Sometimes I think it's actually half-passable if you look at it in the right light and there's an R in the month, and other times it looks like I've laid paper on a trampoline, stuck a crayon up my arse and bounced all night. Which is a dreadful shame and leads me to this:
Sometimes, I do art for a person who has requested it or paid for it or something, and I get the feeling that they don't really like it. Even though they say all the right things, there's a hint that they're not entirely satisfied with the final product.
And this is a bad thing, of course.
Question is, what happens when this happens to you? If it does happen to you of course...I'm sure most other people on here are more consistent than I am and better at drawing so it's probably pretty rare to get a dissatisfied customer! Do you bother the person til they tell you they're unhappy? Do you offer to change it, even if it's a request or name your own price, or something? Do you say nothing and just quietly draft and redraft your suicide note in perfectly formatted LaTeX?
From the other side: what do you do if you don't like your free/name your own price art? Say something? Or not?
I am a curious beecat tonight, aren't I?

Changing my art style a little bit
General | Posted 15 years agoSo commissions might be a tad delayed because I don't want to use commissioners as guinea pigs.
Not even if they were guinea pigs! Which they're not...sadly.
Two full colour half body pinup request slots are open so I can practice my new style ideas. Preferably a canine or feline, preferably male. Comment here if you want in!
I'm hoping my slightly changed style will be cuter, more expressive and uh, less shit.
But it might not work out so...yeah. Am practising.
