FCN Cancellation and thoughts
Posted 12 years agoFurry Connection North (FCN) was one of my most favorite cons. From the start, it was deemed more of a relaxation/party convention. I always felt that FCN was a nearly "perfect" furry con. I believe a lot of start up cons and existing cons can learn a LOT from what FCN did to attract attendees and make this con so enjoyable to all!
I remember back at the start, registration was a measly $25 or $50 to sponsor and to get what: free beer and food in the sponsors lounge!! O.O What a way to get people to sponsor; I think back in Ann Arbor nearly EVERYONE did and from there, things exploded with rave reviews.
Let's start with the hotel: The hotel and staff were awesome; right away I could tell there was a great rapport from the staffers and how they viewed us. The layout was great; large, squatty hotel, no elevator issues, easily walkable. The centralized bar made for a great hangout area with a huge foyer; the con space was very nicely laid out with ample room. Because of the main lobby area, you could hang out with friends and see practically everyone. The hotel was also conveniently located by a few fast food and chain restaurants which were within a 10 minute walk. Hotel parking was ample. The only minor issue was because of FCN's growth, the hotel was bursting at the seems with con-goers; with no fault to the hotel
The programming: IMO the programming fit nearly perfectly with the size of the con. As the con grew, so programming, offering a Dance Comp in the con's later years; there wasn't the need to add all events right away like a lot of new start up cons feel the need. The programming from the start IMO felt a bit lighter and well scheduled so con-goers could have more time to relax, which I thought was key to making this feel like a small/intimate con; regardless of the size.
The staff: GirTyger and staff (IMO) had seen a formula for what people like and don't like at cons, and tried to improve upon it. I felt they did an excellent job, creating a great formula for success, and the number of attendees showed this. Who needs ANOTHER con in Detroit of all places, especially with larger cons like FWA just a few weeks before, and MFF in a fairly close locale? Well, the need was warranted, as 2013's attendance was over 1200 in just 6 years!
The attendees: Of course without attendees, you don't have a con. FCN was able to attract so many great attendees and GoHs, probably spawned from its own reputation. As far as cons go, this con had a much more diverse pool of people, not just locals, but several international visitors as well.
The mood of the con: Once again: Party con! Furs love to party, and I got to host an epic room party that rocked in 2012. Sure we were noisy and got warned, but when you're up stairs, and you get noise complaints from several floors DOWN, i guess maybe we were being a bit loud. In general though, there was very little harassment from security and staff and people were led to make FCN their own thing.
I could go on and on about how much enjoyment I had at FCN; so much that this con superseded any of my other events that went on during this weekend. For example, my barbershop choir show (our big fundraiser) was scheduled for the same weekend next year, and I had firmly said to my chorus that I would not be in attendance, because FCN was that important and special to me, as a volunteer person and attendee.
Of course I'm sad to see FCN disbanding after having such a great run; and seemingly without warning, but I respect the decision of the staff. I believe that there must have been some underlying issues which made it tough, if not impossible for someone to step in and take over. People, in general, do not understand how much effort and time it takes to be involved and run a con. Heck, I can't even claim that. I do staffing and a lot of volunteer work for cons, but I'm not behind the scenes throughout the year making things a go; it's like a part-time job and the few months leading up, it's a full time job! 90% of people just show up, enjoy, and complain about things that don't work vs. everything that does work.
I cannot thank
GirTygrin and his staff enough for their hard work and dedication. You guys have created so many wonderful memories with your successful convention. It feels like we're losing a dear friend. FCN, you will be greatly missed by us furs!

Fursuiting Con?
Posted 12 years agoToday, there was a debate about if there were too many cons. I mentioned that if a new con comes up, for me to attend it would have to bring something new and fresh to the fandom. So, I mentioned a con gear heavily toward fursuiters/fursuiting.
Ideas: Permanent "warehouse" for fursuiters to romp in with a fun ball pit/toy area, simple mini golf course set-up, other fun games such as dodge ball area, picture area, fursuiting walk/trail area, an arcade area, a bowling area next door. A set of fursuit games once a day with real fun prizes.
Lounges with coolers of cold water and energy drinks, etc. Permanent dance area.
Just things quickly off the top of my head. I feel that this would have to be some place cool weather climate, like October/November, or March/April unfortunately conflicting with other cons. Also would have to be a major airport hub for ease of access and a place where there is not a con currently. Hmmmms.
Opinions?? I can just dream I suppose :)

Stormcon IV RSVP!
Posted 12 years agoGuys,
STORMCON OFFICIAL Announcement!!! (In conjunction with Nbowa's birthday).
If you would like to attend Stormcon IV, September 7-8th, please click on the link and sign up here by filling out all of the columns: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet.....mp;usp=sharing This includes if you have interested in poker, need a place to stay Saturday night, and then finally if you would like to do a brunch somewhere.
I reserved the Zoo Hill pavilion in Bever Park, which is in a slightly different location from last year. It does have electricity, so feel free to bring crockpots, fans, etc.
I'll be providing the meat and buns (get your mind out of the gutter), so please bring a side to share, or bring some pop. Note: we are allowed to drink at the park, cans and bottles only, so if you'd like to bring an alcoholic beverage such as beer or wine coolers, go ahead. Of course, if you are underage, you are not allowed.
Once again, I'm going to keep my residence dry.
I'm sure there will be questions, so please ask away! :)

Posted 12 years agoUgh, in just over a month I'll be closer to 40 than age 30. SOMEONE MAKE TIME SLOW DOWN!!! :P
Megaplex in 2 days, OMG, everything is happening so quickly, ack!
In other news, Stormcon IV is still scheduled for September 7-8th. Nothing planned as of now, but I'll probably rent out a pavilion in Bever Park again and have a fursuit walk in the park. Out of towners, take note! :)

"Non-Random non-con trips"
Posted 12 years agoMy last two trips have been less than random. Instead of going to a convention, I have decided to visit good friends. (random blabbers ahead)
Trip 1: Canada-eh! June 7-17th. Visiting
Vlen along with a random stop over at
BCBreakaway's and his partners place. Vlen and I go way back from the days of the Lion King, and since he had visited me several times in the US, I figured I should at least return the favor once! He was an amazing host, booking us for a nice villa in the mountains around Banff, booking us into the Fairmont Banff Spring Spa, and general awesomeness of eating lots of yummy foods. BCBreakaway and I only recently met around January on a random mass chat that is Twitter, and started talking, finding out he also lived in Edmonton, and was ALSO Asian! WTF man! He and his partner treated us to a wonderful meal and relaxation time just east of Edmonton in their lovely abode. Some of our craziness in fursuit BC posted on his FA for those curious: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10858320/ (playing Mahjong, us being Asian of course :P)
Trip 2: North Dakota: July 3-7th
Rrruff flew up to visit me in Iowa and we immediately headed out of here, since this place is borrrring! We visited a long time friend of mine,
Snapcat along with his partner,
ThorWhiteLegs. We indulged in a wonderful meal of steak and shrimp, played some poker and golf. The next afternoon we were off to visit mutual friends,
FerricFox and
MoonBlazeWolf in sultry, ND. Random fursuit fireworks appearance in Moorhead then some randomness of tennis, golf, disc golf with
Express and
Yonoa and more eating! Yay! Again, treated to wonderful hospitality and more relaxation. Of course, being in Fargo, I had to see the movie and reenact the scene: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11022428 (and some other pictures on Ferric's FA page). Another great trip, another awesome group of furs in the Fargo area!
I think I really needed these non-fur con trips. But next off: Megaplex, so hope to see you there!! :)

Comments vs. Reality
Posted 12 years ago"I'm not touching that statement with a 40' pole" is a comment I recently said on Twitter. Being me, I instantly thought of my job and I can extrapolated in my mind to say this:
"I'm not touching that statement with a 40' class 4 southern yellow pine utility pole, treated with creosote". Hmmmmm doesn't quite have the ring does it? :/

Deserved thanks to photographers!!
Posted 12 years agoThis is something I don't always show or get around to saying, so I'll sum it up here: I'm absolutely grateful for people taking pictures of me at cons/meets/events and then link me to them. Also, I extend a gracious thanks if you deem me as photo worthy for FA. I always love to see my character in action, as it helps me with future photos and performance. :)
I really am appreciative to those who take the time to do this seemingly boring task, and I know there's a lot of you out there! *hugz the lot of you*

FWA, complete! Fursuit lounge comments pls.
Posted 12 years agoFWA 2013 is in the books! I know, everyone knows about elevator con, and the hellish wait times, but that will be resolved next year. I always have supported FWA, and will continue to do so!
I had a great time staffing; I was basically one of three in charge of maintaining the fursuit lounges, and keeping the riff raff out. I got some great feedback, and would some more.
Feedback so far, towels were great, water was adequate.
Needs a mirror or two.
Disinfectant spray for head driers
Fursuit repair station (thread, hot glue gun, etc).
Any other feedback would be very much appreciated, lounge related or fursuit related. Thanks! :)

High speed interwebs, opinion.
Posted 12 years agoSo, they lowered the price locally here on 65Mbs internet. It's only $30 more than I'm paying for 15Mbs a month. Do you think the extra 40Mbs is worth the $30/month extra, or is it a wank?
Golf at FWA?
Posted 12 years agoHey, last minute I know, but is there anyone interested in golfing at FWA? There's a group of 5 of us going, and we have 2 tee times, 10:20 and 10:30 Friday morning for Wolf Creek http://www.wolfcreekgc.com/ It's $52 + tax. We'd leave the lobby hotel at 9AM.
It would be great to have one more! :)

I'm a sucker for sales. - Kohl's.
Posted 12 years agoSo a new Kohl's opened up just 5 minutes from my house. That spells DISASTER!
I open up the "Grand opening" letter from them, and sure enough, 30% off coupon! (You can get 15%, 20%, and 30% off). So, crap I do need new luggage, let's see if they have what I want...
The first time was a sign, I show up with coupon in paw, but without my wallet. Back for a second run...
I park and finally go into the brand new store, everything shiny and squeaky clean. I head over to luggage, and sure enough, SALE! :P Reg price: $340, on sale half price. (no one ever pays full price). So they've already got me; they have what I want, and so I proceed to roll it out. And on the way I happen to grab two bundles of socks and a new pair of khakis, other "essentials." So, they ring it up, take off my 30% discount: $165. Regular price for all items: $438, The cashier circles my savings, "you've saved $273 today!" And then she proceeds to hand me $30 in Kohl's cash, usable between March 11th and 31th. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, this all goes on your Kohl's CHARGE card too! So that's another whammy!
I look at my 30% off coupon, it's good through March 13th, so of course, I can go back in, use my 30% off coupon again, and get $30 of "Free" stuff with my Kohl's cash (well more like $39 worth, 30%). So they've basically secured that I'm going to go back in the store and they've got me in a loop! :P
I'm a sucker, but this type of marketing works, since I feel like I'm "saving" vast amounts of money and getting "paid" to do so :P
Oh well.. *marks March 11th on his phone and sets alarm*

FCN Dance comp INFO (reposted from Huscoon)
Posted 12 years agoHey dancin' fuzzies!
Are some fursuit dance competitions getting too large? Do you dislike the fact that some competitions have 60+ fursuiters trying out for them? Do you want to tryout for a dance competition and not want to overly stress out about whether will make it to the finals? Do you want to do this all while still being in the midst of the some of the best fursuit dancers this fandom has to offer? Then come to FCN for our 2nd Fursuit Dance Competition!
Last year, we put over a dozen talented fursuit dancers on the floor in a show that was as fun as any other dance competition at a furry convention. For 2013, it will be much of the same.
Just like last year, we welcome solo acts, dancing couples, as well as fursuiting crews to show off their talent, offering more ways than ever to show off your moves! Also, just like last year, "crowd reaction" will be a factor in the final score. Because when you get half of the con attendees packed in the ballroom, you want them chanting your name!
If you are interested, a link has been included explaining the fine details of this competition. If you have any questions, contact Huscoon via e-mail at huscoon(at)gmail(dot)com or through AIM, Yahoo, FA, or LJ under the username "huscoon."
Thank you and good luck!

*RAGE* Pool table - stupid furs :P
Posted 12 years agoOk,
Someone must have either sat on or laid on my pool table again... I was using it tonight and there's so much drift in the balls, it's actually unplayable in its current state. :P
Pool tables are NOT TABLES, BENCHES OR BEDS! I just paid $75 to get it re-leveled, and I'm going to have to get it re-leveled again. For the immediate future, no one will be allowed to play!!! My pool table cost over $2500 and it's a precision piece of equipment. It's made of 3 pieces of slate, so the joints get warped when load applied to them.
*rolls eyes* I can't believe how disrespectful some people are... Especially after I've stated this before.

Lifetime foodz!
Posted 13 years agoIf you could buy a ticket for "Free unlimited lifetime food" at your favorite fast food/restaurant, how much would you spend, and what place would it be?
I'd actually probably choose Panera or Subway (Subway is more widespread, and a quicker in/out while Panera is better quality). And I think I'd spend $10,000 for that ticket! :)

Rooming at TFF?
Posted 13 years agoThanks all for the replies! I got it all sorted out! See you at TFF!
Well currently I have a room to myself at Furry Fiesta due to circumstances. I'd like to change that, so there are two options I see:
1) I'd either have a couple of people to share with me or
2) I could join with someone else that has room space and cancel my room.
I do have a double bed room Thursday through Monday. Note me about either option and I'll respond. Thanks! :) No real requirements besides you are courteous and will pay your share! :) Preferably someone I know but not a biggie either way.
Thanks!

I do have a double bed room Thursday through Monday. Note me about either option and I'll respond. Thanks! :) No real requirements besides you are courteous and will pay your share! :) Preferably someone I know but not a biggie either way.
Thanks!
