Huge news for Genetic Engineering

Now lets hope this also applies to companies like monsanto.
Patenting DNA is just sick... But I don't believe this ruling is broad enough to cover completely artificial DNA.

Linden Labs Fucks us all over again
General | Posted 12 years agoSo, Linden labs has changed their terms of service... 3rd party exchanges are now banned.
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/.....e/ba-p/1996185
this means I can no longer sell L$, meaning secondlife money is truly just monopoly money now to me. Now I might be able to sell through a friend or some such still, for now... but only if I know some one in person whos willing to let me borrow their paypal or what not.
So fuck you LL for ruining my business.
This also means if you want to commission me, you're going to have to pay in bitcoin or cash in mail. :\

Neverwinter really doesn't
General | Posted 12 years agoNeverwinter really doesn't want you to group up.
if you are in a group, you cannot leave an area unless your entire party is standing at that exit... this includes party members who are currently offline... and party members who are 20 levels under you and in another zone. This means if you are trying to go to the same zone, you have to leave party, THEN you can go to that zone and rejoin the party.
Getting around the map is a nightmare, you cannot leave an instance except at a specific exit to the zone... some zones have multiple exits but the one i'm currently in only has one, one that will take me 15 minutes of jogging to get to... There isn't even a "hearthstone" alla WoW or TP Scroll alla Diablo. Nor a waypoint system like guildwars. (Though once you do get to the end of a map you can choose where you are going freely.) The problem with this, I wanted to do a dungeon with a friend, meaning we both have to be at the dungeon entrance, which is a 15 minute run from the entrance to the zone... However he has no clue how to get there, so I had to run back to show him the way... 30 minute jog. I guess they REALLY want you to buy those fucking mounts, huh?
I've ranted on this subject before, but standing still to cast... drives me fucking insane. neverwinter's combat is clunky, slow, and awkward. Movement interrupts some abilities, some abilities don't allow you to move. So there is this weird hirearchy of what abilities override other abilities, and the "move" dodge overrides everything except being knocked down held or disabled. Of course the only class with "dodge" is the cleric, because that makes sense :D Oh and its a "utility power" from 4th edition D&D, other classes get a sprint, or teleport or what not.
So not only can you not move while attacking, there are these constant aoe zones you are supposed to get out of, except you can't move except when you click dodge. Or if you stop attacking and wait 1-2 seconds for the animation to finish, THEN you can walk out of the AOE, but by that time its probably gone off. XD So its like it wants to be guildwars 2 (which has a very nice dodge function) but forgot to allow you to move...
But then I unlocked my "divine power" or some such bullcrap... and suddenly while attacking (a channeled ability) I can move around while attacking! it made the game feel so much better... except I can only use that power for a very limited amount of time and then its back to painful suffering movement.
The user interface is pretty pisspoor, and the default ability key layout sucks terribly. q,e,r are your encounter powers (essentially, powers with a short cool down) right and left click on the mouse is your at will powers (no cooldown, but a short attack animation time) then 1,2 are your "daily" powers (essentially an ability you can only use after building up a "limit gauge" like mechanic) then tab is your something weird power, and shift is your utility power. then 3,4,5 are your quickslot items
From that layout, it would have been perfectly easy to put your at will powers on an auto attack, allowed you to move around with them.. then only forced you to stand still while casting your other powers... and maybe just gave us a 1 through 0 hotbar like EVERY OTHER GAME ON THE PLANET and let us lay things out as we pleased.. Maybe a couple extra hotkeys for q and e. (I personally rebound e to moustbutton 4, then moved r to e, so my thumbbutton just causes an AOE blast :P seemed like a good idea)
Oh and then the priest has two types of "limit gauges" :P the normal daily power one, and a divine power one... which changes her entire skillset to do something slightly different.
Last but not least, the writing is boring, the quests are linear and lead you by the nose.. (litterally, there is this golden sparkling trail leading you to EVERY FUCKING LITTLE THING YOU NEED TO DO) I get it, people are lazy, but at least make us put some thought in to it instead of "follow the yellow sparkle road" for 40 hours. You don't need to read anything to play, just click 1 repeatedly to accept quests, then follow the gold sparklies, click 1 again on whatever they lead you to (or kill everything in the area) and you are done with the game. :\
I'm not asking for hardmode getting lost in the wilderness game... but I would like at least a semi-open world with multiple ways to complete the quest... Maybe I'm just spoiled by guildwars2, every "quest" is always there if you are in the area, and there are multiple paths to solve it... kill soemthing.. collect something, help something, maybe even do something unexpected. I guess in my mind, guildwars2 is the ideal, if you can't at least match it, you're MMO is going to be terrible.
I do hope they fix the problems in neverwinter, I want to make maps, I want to essentially GM this shit, but as it stands now, its looking like I won't be able to keep playing without ripping my hair out :P

SL Region redesign
General | Posted 12 years agoSticky had a major facelift... Got rid of the old tower, now its a beach resort! oh how... lame? :P
Seriously, nothing to be all E-Peen over? D: No massive 500 meter tall spire, no floating rock islands? So sad! ;.;
But anyway, half of it is being rented out as parcels... the other half is the group area.

I, HATE, SOUR... POWER COMPANIES
General | Posted 13 years agoIf you have ever had to deal with Dominion power, or one of the other monopolistic power corporations out east in the US, you probably know.
We had a tiny snowstorm here, not more than an inch or so of accumulation. It didn't even get below freezing.
So of course, everyone here drives like a fucking maniac, businesses close, and people cry blizzard. Also something strange happened, all over the state, power lines were broken, for one reason or another... including a one block area starting at my side of the street.
This says two things, not only are these sections of the power grid fragile (no backup lines, badly maintained lines, no tree trimming) it also says Dominion is an incompetent company.
These power outages are wholey preventable, there is NO REASON FOR THIS CRAP. I've lived all over the country, you know what they do? Follow each line once a year, maybe twice, remove the branches laying on the lines, clean up around them, trim the trees, and do a little preventative care.
Here though, they wait for something to break, then spend a day to a week to fix it. After the hurricane back in 2011 (i think) we were without power for 9 days because they couldn't find a single tiny fault in their network... Where we kept telling them the fault was (a giant fucking tree fell in to the street and took out the fragile little curl in their power network) We had to fucking walk them up the street before they realized that "oh, right, your power actually DOES come in from this direction."
This time we called them, told them exactly where it was, they were happy to say "yah sure, whatever you say bub, will be fixed by saturday."
So, in the middle of winter, (hey it is snowing, and did get below freezing last night) we are expected to be without power for 4 days, mind you we have electric heat. And this goes for the 50 or so other houses around this large block. Just because they felt it was a better (Read cheaper) idea to wait until something broke.
I don't buy it, they aren't being paid by those 50 some houses, our house is rather power hungry with dozens of servers and lights on 24/7, others may be similar in the neighborhood. So its likely our house alone would happily pay the 2 hours of pay the guy would need to come down and trim the trees once a spring and check the line for degredation. How much money do they lose, because they don't want to pay their employees to do a good job?

Inspiration is evil
General | Posted 13 years agoI started writing about 1pm yesterday. It is 5:30 am today.
Except for food and bathroom breaks... I really didn't stop writing. I'm only stopping now because I'm too exhausted to continue.
When inspiration strikes, you obey.
30 pages written in essentially a single sitting. 22,000 words. It also isn't finished. At least another 10 thousand words to go I'm sure.

Porn & Hentai
General | Posted 13 years agoSo, was kinda horny tonight... Rare occurance for me. I hunted for something to entertain.
Porn does nothing, its boring, woo naked bodies, maybe sexually explicit, but static moments without context or terribly written scenes.
I looked up some hentai, it was even worse. Am I the only person who wants emotionally driven plot and development with my porn? :P

General | Posted 13 years agoNew Scripts for Demon Wangs
General | Posted 13 years agoSo, I decided to port my demon penis to my new script set.
Sadly the new scripts are sculpt agnostic, so i had to drop the animation scripted stuff for now. Eventually once I get animations working for the v4 scripts i'll add them back in.
However, it reduced the script overhead by a TON from something like 50~ scripts down to 5 or 6. Plus it is able to use my new hud.. (though i REALLY need to get to modifying the hud, the color picker and texture picker is fickle and badly thought out)
But anyway, works nicely, also helped me track down and fix a few dozen bugs in my scriptset that i hadn't touched before since I hadn't before used it in a penis.

I made a Weasyl
General | Posted 13 years agoSHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
General | Posted 13 years agoTera: Rising, I am disapoint.
General | Posted 13 years agoSo, I downloaded it and gave it a try today... I... was dissatisfied.
The game felt very much like the worst parts of wow crossed with the worst parts of FF11.
Not that it was all bad, but my initial experience... I played 10 minutes and almost quit outright when the prologue mission I was on broke making it impossible to beat.
So then I jumped to the main game, and played until about lvl 7. The questing system is so cut and dried WoW like, that it was painful. I got sick of Wow's quest years before I quit wow. the only 3 types of quests I found were, go here, kill things; go here, kill things; bring back things; go here, talk to some jackwagon to get the next fetch quest.
Maybe I'm just hooked on guildwars 2 now. I have seen what a quest system can be, and I can't go back to the predictable, ignorable, pointless drivle. Kill 5 kobolds and report back to me is NOT my idea of adventure. This my friends, is what we call grind for the sake of subscription time. But tera no longer has a subscription... drop the act.
Story is my big thing though, when I am playing a game, I want to be immersed in the world, to feel a part of it. Tera drops you in, knowing nothing, and then gives you a few paragraphs to read in your story quests.. referencing things that I didn't have a clue about since the prologue mission bugged out. (Oh and I was suggested to restart the game to fix the bug.. but that deleted ALL OF MY PROGRESS in the prologue... wtf?!)
The story missions were the same damn fetch and go talk to asshat over there as everything else as well! I really disliked guildwars 2's storyline, but at least there I had interesting things to do, I just happened to think the story was badly written, thought out, and most of the characters rather annoying. (Except your mentor when you join a faction).
Even wow had more story, its true you didn't have any forking or anything, but at least you had an interesting narrative with some fun things to do.
Now to the better side, Tera's graphics are quite nice, and the races interesting... Though not sure what to think about the 1000 year old pre-pubescent girl race, wearing a nightgown with her panties showing... fucking koreans :P The classes are kinda standard, ranger, warrior, wizard, cleric, rogue... not much else to say about it. I tried a ranger. Starts you out with 2 skills, dodge and shoot. and you have to stand still to use your abilities. (So much for the "In tera you have to keep moving!" bullshit.. Sorry, guildwars does that a thousand times better, even WoW allows me to move and attack at the same time!)
The last thing I want to poke a finger at, community interaction. Tera limits your communications drastically. You cannot talk in public until lvl 5, you cannot talk in global until lvl 20. You can whisper people from lvl 1 though. Also, there is absolutely NOTHING to push people to group up. In fact I only saw maybe 3 or 4 people, and they were init-tagging monsters to get the kill. Yes, tera uses that godawful system that, whoever gets the first hit gets the reward. There seems to be some EXP sharing method, but they didn't count toward quest. Oh and from what I could tell, you could take other people's loot too. ( I know I took some one else's accidentally)
All in all, there is nothing new here in the beginning, nothing to grab my attention, and a lot of backsliding from the modern MMO. But I couldn't stomach it far enough to see if there was any more.

Webdesigner, go home you are drunk.
General | Posted 13 years agoWebsite designers these days are a breed of moron I have concluded. I used to be one of them, back when the only tools we had were weak javascript and maybe some server side stuff like first gen ASP or PHP. I quit about the time "DHTML" and CSS were becoming popular.
Some where between then and now, efficiency went through the window, usability went through the window. Some sites make even some of the Geocities pages look well designed. Just a few minutes ago I noticed one of the sites I read regularly broke the back button functionality. They did it with some weird redirect.. so you go to a link, then the link redirects you to the page you expect you to go. So if you hit back, it takes you to the redirect, not the page you were at before.
......
This is unforgivable. Basic functionality of a web browser should not be compromised I don't know what they are trying to do, but I'm sure there is another way they could accomplish it.
This same site recently implemented the horrendous social media buttons... for each post, maybe 20 posts per page. Each social media button is in its own iframe inside a div. There are 7 social media buttons for each set. That is 141 pages loaded for every single refresh 140+ different copies of the js files loaded on every single page. Making a connection to a website is not free, it takes time, even on my 35Mbps connection it takes time. Every time I load the page, refresh the page, or whatever.. it freezes for between 2 and 10 seconds. Freezes, not just laggy, not just slow loading, the whole fucking browser window locks up. I will be the first to admit iframes have their uses... but THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. Write a single fucking java script, implement 7 functions in it, call those 7 functions from 20 different places with different parameters, depending on the post. There is absolutely no reason for this inefficient garbage!
Do you know what this made me do? It made me use adblock to block social media buttons. My browsing has never been better! Sites that used to be slow are now snappy, sites that were buggy now work flawlessly.
Webdesigners, check yourself, you're ruining your own usefulness. Learn some damn efficiency. Sure ram is free, processing is abundant, but when you are making a 3.5ghz processor take 10 seconds to render a page... YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.

Fuck skype in its fucking fuck mouth
General | Posted 13 years agoOver the past 3 years, I have grown more and more dissatisfied with skype, its business model, and its trustworthiness. Then every few months I run in to a new article pointing out something stupid skype has done... or It does something involving me that just seems down right idiotic.
The latest one, is they are being accused of selling personal information on one of their users to their previous affiliation. They gave out personal information of a teenaged wikileaks supporter to paypal. This was done without a warrant, without any government involvement, just buddy buddy sharing of private information.
Then with all the hubbub over the chinese spying, americans demanding the ability to spy on communications, and so forth... I'm about done.
I'm running a teamspeak server, and murmur/mumble server... if folks want to voice chat me, they can get on there. Video confrencing I almost never do, but if they want to, they can join me on a google hangout, or in googletalk.
If I need to show my desktop there is join.me or livestream.
So i'm going to open my murmur/mumble server to anyone to use... nes.mooo.info

Web Efficiency
General | Posted 13 years agoHas anyone else noticed the insanity lately with how heavy websites and web browsers are?
This is the biggest smack in the face of "web apps" Web applications are more often heavier and slower than non-web based variants. Of the pages I have open right now, google+ is eating 240mb of ram, twitter is eating half a gig, wikipedia (mostly text anyway) is eating only 50mb where as a google hangout is eating an entire gig. How is this even remotely reasonable let alone possible?
I've written websites, and programs... They don't take that much resource, I'm sorry.. a 40kb website (including images) shouldn't require 40mb to render, this my friends is pure fucking unreasonable.
Web programming is pretty and all, but why for the love of hell does it have to be so inefficient?!

Part-Time

For centuries humanity has worked to make things easier. Automation, steam power, electricity, robotics... things that made things take less time to supposedly give you more free time...
There was once a dream where americans only had to work a few hours a week to earn a living wage... where everything that needed to be done was done. Of course that isn't entirely practical, there are still many fields where it takes long hours and hard work... but most of these are in the intellectual fields now.
But the pay didn't scale. The upper few in a company reaped the benefits of that easy work, getting more for less. Buying stock in a company no longer meant giving money to a company so they could improve and receiving compensation... now it just becomes a money mill, chewing away at the assets the company makes.
So people still need to work 10-12 hours at minimum wage to get by... but arn't even given that oportunity since automation has made them vanish.
We are in a transition period, a very painful one... many jobs are drying up because they have become obsolete, but our society is still based around the concept of having these man hours. You are less of a person if you do not work 8+ hours a day. You are a "leech"... But corporations are taking advantage of that by turning purely to part time employment where they can get away with it without passing on the benefits.
