And the winner is... Mother!
General | Posted 13 years agoSo by popular demand, Mother has won the vote. You strove to collect its bountiful breasts and now they're heaving above your sated desire. Reap the rewards of your struggle, as shall I and all your kinsmen; afterwards there will be a discussion and new vote round ye olde square table.
THTU;DR* Mother won. I'll post a new vote in the next journal instead of this one to make things less confusing.

Film Discussion: The Dead Zone
General | Posted 13 years agoWhat a great suspense story! Great production values and probably the most coherent rendition of a Stephen King story ever! (At least one with supernatural elements; The Shawshank Redemption is a pretty good tale too)
7/10 for me, it was cool seeing Christopher Walken not be a parody of himself.
Also the vote for next weeks movie is here guys. REALLY need ya to vote and be part of a bigger puzzle :D

And the winner is... The Dead Zone!
General | Posted 13 years agoUnfortunately we didn't get nearly as many votes as in the past. Consequently, this is the first week I didn't post a reminder to everyone who was watching about the new vote that was up, even though they get a notification among their journals. Basically I didn't want to come off like I was nagging people to enjoy movies or enjoy being part of the group... but if you guys would prefer me to say 'hey it's time for a new vote' then I can work the time into my schedule to do so. Anyway!
The Dead Zone is the winner for this week! Mother came in second place so it crosses over along with two new contenders, who will win this time? Start your voting now!
1.) Mother http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPcijFQ4PpU (4 votes, whoopee!)

3.) 21 Grams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZXR9ZrRR2c (1 votes, hopeful harry?)
I hope to see more folks vote this time and I'll try to post to everyone's page!

Film Discussion: Mary & Max
General | Posted 13 years agoThis is probably one of the best animated movies I've seen, if not one of the best movies I've seen period. For a film with constant narration, I never felt pandered to or annoyed, more like it helped temper the heavy elements with a kind of playfulness that kept you from getting too overwhelmed with grief. And there are many moments where the pain quotient goes off the scale, especially depending on how well you can relate to the extreme loneliness these characters feel. I can definitely relate to Max and his black and white world view; even if I see myself as doing a bit better than himself there are still many ways I can work on my own Aspergers. The ending was pretty sad but suited the movie, also I'd say all people who have Aspergers and people who know others with said learning disability should watch this film and maybe they'll better understand their friends.
I give this 10/10 and definitely will see it again, and I plan to own this film one day.
What did you guys think?
Also the vote for next weeks movie is included in this journal please keep voting so we can see such awesome movies as this one: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3312921/

General | Posted 13 years agoFirst off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has watched this group, whether because they want to be a part of our movie-watching merry making or just giving props to the amazing service we know as Netflix, I was quite surprised by our modest success. New people seem to watch every week and that is pretty exciting, to know there are others who really care about movies besides myself.
The winner for this week is Mary & Max, be sure to watch it whenever you have free time, and a film discussion journal will be posted on Saturday sometime.
As for next week, MAYAEWK is passed along again, along with two new contenders. Who will win?

Film Discussion: Winter's Bone
General | Posted 13 years agoFor fear of taking any points other people have, I'm just going to say I liked Winter's Bone a lot and would love to hear what others thought about it!

And the winner is... Winter's Bone!
General | Posted 14 years agoKinda funny how the past three weeks we've had movies with two word titles. Just to mention a silly thing I noticed. Anyway! It was another close race but the winner by a nose is Winter's Bone. Starring Jennifer Garner, the lead in the upcoming 'The Hunger Games,' she plays a girl searching for her derelict father. Who knows what she'll discover along the way, about him and herself? It's a dark, earthy film, and pulls you in to this backwoods world. I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks about it, especially since it was shot mere miles away from where I used to live in Missouri.
As for next weeks vote, The Constant Gardener was pushed out of the running, the new second place being MAYAEWK! So below, LET US MAKE HASTE WITH RESPECTABLE VOTES AND HONOR with that and two brand new films to observe! And though I appreciate the votes, that's only half of this endeavor, I'd really love to see more input from those who see the films and what they liked about it or not :)

Film Discussion / Furry Movie Night: Fri March 23rd, 2012
General | Posted 14 years agoMarathon Man was an exciting movie, filled with twists and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat most of the way through. Laurence Olivier was spectacular as the sinister Nazi dentist! Spotty sound design which resulted in muddy dialogue near the front half, along with a few plot holes that were only more apparent after you'd watched the film kept it from being a bona fide masterpiece, but overall it's something I'd watch again, I'd share with friends, and I'd make silly sexy noises after getting to see young Dustin Hoffman's nice looking ass. 8/10 for me! What did you all think? Post your opinion below, along with your vote for next week's film among the three we'll be picking from!
Since 'The Constant Gardener' was second place once more, it once more ends up among our top three contenders. Maybe it'll win this time, who knows? Coupled with it are going to be two films I've actually seen before, that I consider more or less masterpieces in their own way and would love to share with you guys if either one got voted, though I'd definitely like to see The Constant Gardener too.
1.) Winter's Bone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O8F8JtSVmI
2.) Me and You and Everyone We Know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNPPgP81EOI

Film Discussion AND Furry Movie Night: Fri March 16th, 2012
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, Rabbit Hole. I thought it was a poignant movie, well acted with a musical score that helped to lighten the mood and move the film along while not being intrusive. Little flourishes of tunefulness sweeten the dark story being told here. At first, even with the couple's loss, it was hard to immediately relate because they seemed to be upper class Americans, and in these troubling economic times that's a hard thing not to focus on. But I was able to look past that and see them as people who are hurting, a couple who had surely been through many ups and downs before losing their child but this obstacle was bringing them to their knees and possibly about to split them apart like it does to many others who suffer a huge tragedy. I cared a lot about the characters, got mad when they were assholes, and felt better when they accepted their problems and tried to work through them, albeit in somewhat unusual ways.
It was a hard movie to watch because of the heavy emotions, but overall it was worthwhile, and nowhere near as harrowing as, say, Requiem for a Dream.
I would give this film an 8 out of 10. What did you all think about Rabbit Hole?
Part 2 of this journal contains the new set of films to vote on! As previously mentioned, The Constant Gardener wins another shot at getting picked this week because it won second place, and will compete against two new, possibly great films. Let's see who wins!
LET US VOTE FOR THE MOVIES BELOW WITH HONOR RESPECT DIGNITY AND TRUTH!

We'll have a film discussion and new vote journal up on Saturday night :)
It was a close race though and since it was so close, we'll be carrying 'The Constant Gardener' into next week's vote. This is how it will work from now on, where second place gets a 'second chance' so to speak, along with two new movies :)

Furry Movie Night: Friday, March 9th, 2012
General | Posted 14 years agoTo make things much easier, and especially because some folks don't know about as many movies to suggest or are hesitant to watch things outside of their comfort zone, I'll be picking the films to vote on by myself but there will still be a vote. If/when people want to make suggestions that is still welcome and all ideas will be considered for later weeks but it will still be between me and whoever else is moderating the group with me (so there's some extra incentive to help out with what is a super easy job). I will pick films from different genres, different years, and different levels of mature content so there's always plenty of variety and no one feels like all three choices to vote on are variations of the same thing and lose interest completely. Since this group is about new experiences and sharing them with other film lovers, not driving someone away who hates black and white foreign films and never wants to give them a chance!
So, below are the choices to vote on for this Friday. I really do hope we get many folks voting and wanting to be involved, as even during my period of retooling everything and deciding how to run the group we got three new watchers, so definitely welcome them into our cinematic world!
Also, I will no longer be voting unless to break a tie which I will do late Thursday if two or more films have the same number of votes. This way there is no bias implied as to which of the movies below to vote on I like 'more' because they will all be a new or enhanced experience for me :)
LET US TRIUMPHANTLY VOTE FOR:
1.) The Constant Gardener - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4iTjavIkbk
2.) Rabbit Hole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9iJH2P96dM

Complete Overhaul Underway!
General | Posted 14 years agoI won't give up yet, and plan on changing the format of the group a little bit. When I've got time over the weekend to flesh it out I will, and you can be sure it'll be posted by the end of Sunday night for all of you who are still interested in not only watching movies, but doing so in a manner more like a 'book club' setting than a movie theater, where everyone can be open and honest about their opinions of whatever film we watch. I'll post a new journal with the new format as well as posting it on the group info once it's done.
Thank you again everyone for the support and being a Netflix fur xD

Stepping Down
General | Posted 14 years agoI've enjoyed the short time this group has been up and worked hard to make it successful, but it seems as if I've mostly failed, considering there's less and less participation as the weeks have gone on, and I don't wanna feel like I'm nagging people to vote or suggest movies if it's really not important to them.
So I'm offering to hand the group to someone else who thinks they can make it more successful and maybe have a different approach to drumming up support for film lovers everywhere, because I would love to be part of a Netflix furs group and watch stuff with folks since I don't get the chance to have a real furry movie night in real life... or maybe I would keep running the group but would change it up a bit from how we do it now, if you guys have any suggestions please respond in this journal or if you're interested in running the gruop :)

Furry Movie Night: February, Friday the 24th
General | Posted 14 years agoThe movie that won was: Wristcutters: A Love Story
Congrats Reimori, your pick one two weeks in a row!
Since there were only three suggestions, our vote for next week is only among three films and they are:
The Fly (remake with Jeff Goldblum)
White Chicks
The Secret Of Kells
My vote is for The Fly, and my suggestion for the next time is Winter's Bone since that's a super good movie that I hope people vote on and it was filmed not too far from the city I've lived my whole life. Also, I truly believe in this group but perhaps don't have the best ideas to expand it or even better integrate our existing members to participate more frequently so if anyone else has suggestions that would be helpful. So remember, everyone vote AND suggest new films, the whole point of me starting this group was my passion for films, and not watching them by myself but sharing with other folks and then sharing what these works of art inspired in us :)

General | Posted 14 years agoThe animation was amazing, per Pixar standards. So was the voice acting. The story was more meh, however, really banking on people's nostalgia glasses even more than trying to establish a new franchise to make everyone lots of money like Cars and Cars 2 did.
So 7/10

Film Discussion: TiMER (spoilers!)
General | Posted 14 years agoWith many movies of this type (Romantic Comedy), the success is measured less in how unique it is, and more if you're attracted to any of the leads. It's a plus if everything is put together not only adequately, but with actual artistry. Though the idea was clever, a lot of the movie was spent with me ogling the drummer because he was cute and surely anyone would be lucky to hang out with such a nice guy. Some of the jokes were funny, but I wasn't really connecting with the lead much besides her perpetual singleness. By the end of the film however, when it turned out she got the TiMER removed AND she wasn't going out with the drummer... I appreciated the bittersweet ending because it appealed, again, to my singleness and depression. This is one of those rom-coms you show to friends who are too chipper and they think it's right as rain all the way through, until getting closer to The Notebook of an ending than How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.
The icing for me, though a minor thing, was how a beautiful song from Iron and Wine I'd only heard once and forgotten about many years ago played at the end. For those of you interested in hearing it in full, here ya go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8aPyBr-_S0
Overall I'd give the film a 7, because it was well made and the TiMER aspect was interesting, though I probably won't remember much about this movie besides the ending and the song.
*The whole soundtrack was filled with indie music, which felt kinda weird, except of course for the final tune.

Film Discussion: Reservoir Dogs (Spoilers!)
General | Posted 14 years agoThis is a film I've seen at least a half dozen times and enjoyed every occasion. Especially the part where they're training the undercover cop so he can get in with the gangsters. But after you've seen the ending once, it does lose a bit of impact so I'd probably give this film a 7/10, because of the great acting, tight script, and how it laid the foundation for Tarantino's even better films such as Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, the latter being the least pastiche like of his films.

Film Discussion: True Grit (the Remake)
General | Posted 14 years agoI hadn't seen this film before, but ended up liking it a lot. Save for some parts which were questionable to me (like prolonging the drama of whether the girl would live or die, considering how she's narrating the beginning of the film like she survived the ordeal) or what seemed to be green-screen horse riding at the end... the cinematography was superb and really put you in the period. Matt Damon didn't take me out of the film nearly as much as I'd thought he would, though I'm still not sure the mustache worked.
All in all, I'd give it a 7/10, and I'm happy to have seen it but I'm not sure it's a movie I'd see again anytime soon.

Film Discussion: 1984 (Spoilers Ahead!)
General | Posted 14 years agoAh... 1984.
Many American kids have read this in high school or earlier and had discussions about the text, but I missed that completely, not getting a shot at this marvelous story until a year or two ago. Boy was I blown away by the gravity of the message. A few slow parts here in there, but overall a powerful story.
Even though I'd read that the film adaptation was excellent, I was still skeptical because 1984 was such a GREAT book. Suffice it to say, they did a damn good job. I'm not sure the movie and the book ended the same way though, and I wish they had spent a tiny bit more time establishing the Richard Burton character as a father figure (I forgot his name shame on me XD) to Winston but... otherwise this was pretty much how I'd imagined it in my head. And little to no exposition to boot, so great!
I'd give it an 8/10 but what did you guys think?
(also for those who missed it, we're still voting and suggesting films for next Friday in this journal: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3110109/ )

Furry Movie Night: January, Friday the 20th, 2012
General | Posted 14 years agoWe will be watching 1984 because it had the most votes. Those whose movies didn't get picked, feel free to suggest the same ones or different ones for the week after next!
The randomly selected (via random.org) films we'll be voting on this week are:
1.) Trainspotting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUOTs55KY40
2.) The Parking Lot Movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcT9rylhEdY
3.) True Grit (the remake) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo-RDJb4W28
3. +) Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_KnUi3t2JI (NSFW)
(This movie is not part of Netflix, and will probably be around 10 dollars or so to stream as part of a Video on Demand feature. Not sure what websites you can even buy it from but the film is supposed to be available on Jan. 27th and I'll DEFINITELY be watching it in addition to what we vote on. Tim and Eric aren't for everyone's tastes, and I wouldn't even call them geniuses, but they crack me up. Anyone else who wants to shell out the dough to see this and talk about it that'd be so cool!
So all you have to do is vote for the movie above you want to see most, and post a new, Netflix-streaming suggestion! Just like this:
Vote: Trainspotting
Suggestion: In The Loop
Total Votes: 7

3.) True Grit: 4 votes
Suggestions:
In The Loop - Coco
Reservoir Dogs - Birdflew
Kagemusha - Rayfoxsith
The Scent of Green Papaya - Riyeko
