Prelude to the 2014/2015 season
General | Posted 11 years agoWelp, the offseason and preseason are over with and all the final roster cuts have been made and yes Hank Williams, Jr., we are ready for some football. I just wanted to make this journal to go over the basic info for the season in case anyone has forgotten as well as do some end of season predictions just for fun.
-#1, Make sure you're watching the group. On the new prediction form is a place for your FA name, if that name you provide doesn't match our watch list it will be disallowed; this is to prevent folks from making multiple prediction accounts.
-This season's games will be presented to you via a link to a simple Google form with the listing of each game and your two choices. Pick one winner for each game and submit. You can expect matchup journals every Monday.
-While all games for the week will be shown on one sheet bear in mind that if you submit your picks after the first kickoff for that day of play only games on remaining days will count.
-You are more than welcome to voice your picks and/or opinions to any and all matches and outcomes of the games of that week in each journal provided but providing picks in only the journal will not count for scoring, only picks submitted through the Google document will be scored. The caveat to this is that changes to your predictions will be allowed but only in the comments section of that week's journal, and only up until the first kickoff of each gameday.
-At the end of 17 weeks the 10 players with the most overall wins will move into the Playoffs which will follow a similar format. In the event an NFL game ends with a tie you will gain neither a Win nor a Loss.
-If there are any ties they will be tie-broken as follows: 1) more weekly victories (i.e. number of times that player was the weekly winner) 2) more Perfect Picks (a perfect pick is achieved when a player correctly predicts every matchup in a week) 3) more Hero Picks (a Hero Pick is achieved when only a single competitor correctly picks the winner to any given matchup).
-If FA should go down at any point in the season like it did last year this is your one notice of a backup plan. You can email your picks to VXR-Razor[at]hotmail[dot]com with all the normal rules pertaining to getting your selections in before each day's first kickoff. Make sure you include "NFLFurs" somewhere in the subject line and your FA name somewhere in the body. If you send me an email with no subject and the only text is your picks I will toss it out. Do not use the email method for week-to-week picks, only if FA is down.
-As always, have fun. Respect your fellow player's opinions. I expect friendly ribbing especially between division rivals, but keep it civil.
Now that that's all out of the way let's discuss the end of the season because that's what any good football fan does before week 1. Supply your thoughts of division winners and SB XLIX matchup! This is just for arguments sake, these don't count towards anything in the prediction challenge.

Preseason Week 4
General | Posted 11 years ago-During the regular season you are welcome to note us your selections in advance if you know you might be away for the weekend but we'd prefer if you could just fill out the weekly form with your picks. (Journal will be posted every Monday)
-You do not have to put score predictions in during the season but feel free to do so if you wish. Score predictions will be part of the Playoffs
-Use the provided link in each weekly journal to make your picks. You may comment in the journal to change your picks up until the first kickoff of that night of the week. Once the kickoff for Thursday, Sunday, or Monday occurs no more predictions or alterations for that day will be allowed. If you miss a day feel free to make predictions for the other days of the week. if you are submitting your picks after one of the game days has already begun bear in mind that only your picks for the remaining days will be scored.
-At the end of 17 weeks the 10 players with the most wins will move into the Playoffs which will follow a similar format. In the event a game ends with a tie you will gain neither a Win nor a Loss.
-Finally, have fun. This group is here so you can enjoy furries and football =P

Preseason stuff and Preseason Week 1 open!
General | Posted 11 years agoSo, The Giants strike first this season and the opening game of the 2014/2015 NFL season is now over after they defeated the Bills 17-13 in the Hall of Fame Game and we can now look forward to game 1 of the Regular Season; but first 4 weeks of preseason games!
These next four weeks will give us time to test out our new prediction system to make sure it's easier for you guys and for us before the important games start. The basic rules for participation will be as follows:
-Make sure you're watching the group, on the new prediction form is a place for your FA name. If that name you provide doesn't match our watch list it will be disallowed; this is to prevent folks from making multiple prediction accounts.
-This season's games will be presented to you via a link to a simple Google form with the listing of each game and your two choices. Pick one winner for each game and submit. You can expect matchup journals every Monday
-Finally, have fun. Respect your fellow player's opinions. I expect friendly ribbing especially between division rivals, but keep it civil.
Two side notes; 1) since the Google form will reduce the amount of predictions anyone will see and since
redyoshi is the one who maintains this page and all the data he will therefore post his picks publicly in each journal just so there won't be any finger pointing if he does really well (which he won't) and 2) if FA should go down at any point in the season like it did last year this is your one notice of a backup plan. You can email your picks to VXR-Razor[at]hotmail[dot]com with all the normal rules pertaining to getting your selections in before each day's first kickoff. Make sure you include "NFLFurs" somewhere in the subject line and your FA name somewhere in the body. Do not use the email method for week-to-week picks, only if FA is down.
That's all the info for now, if you have any questions let us know!
And on that note I give to you the matchups for Preseason Week 1! Click here to make your picks

A new season approaches
General | Posted 11 years agoLooking back now it seems like only a couple weeks since the Super Bowl, dreading the monotony of the off-season. Yet here we are only a week away from the start of pre-season games! Not including the silly Hall of Fame Game on the 3rd.
The pre-season games this year will give new and old players alike the chance to hone their presumption skills before the real season begins and it will give us here at NFLFurs a chance to try out a new prediction format to reduce our manual data entry and increase accuracy. The core will stay the same; you're still picking winners just not in the journal itself anymore.
Before that though I want to try to get a head count of who all may be interested in participating this year. Commenting in this journal does not gain you access to "season 2" nor does it preclude you, I just want to see how many players I might be looking at this season. Last season there were a total of 19 entrants though on average it was only 12-14 per week. This year we want to up the stakes; if, by the end of the regular season we have at least 25 full-time players (for this to be achieved each of the 25 need to have participated in at least 75% of the season, that's 192 games of 256) there will be a prize for the best record at the end of the Regular Season, likely a gift card to, say, the NFL.com store. If we can achieve 40 players then the Playoffs winner will also be in the running for something nice. There are still absolutely no monetary contributions required from you guys and there never will be.
So leave a comment if you think you'd like to participate this year, and tell your furry football friends if they haven't joined already! We'll have another journal up before the first pre-season games.

Draft Completed
General | Posted 11 years agoSo the draft happened...yup. If you didn't already follow your team's picks the full results can be found Here. The Buccaneers, Raiders, and Falcons are viewed as having the best draft while Benglas, Chiefs, and Bills seem to have unanimously made the worst selections based on their needs. Only time will tell, eh?
While we sit back and wait for training camps there two non-affiliated announcements; whereas our group here doesn't focus too much on the fantasy football aspect there are a couple of recent options:
1)
FAFFleague is a football simulation where you can create characters and manage your own furry football team. If that sounds like fun then this is for you.
2)
jingles007 is looking for players to join in his Yahoo fantasy league http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5690113/

General | Posted 11 years agoWe are exactly 2 weeks away from the NFL draft and "experts" from all over the sporting world submit list after list of preliminary drafts trying to anticipate where the brand new rookie talents will land. Do you think you know? Then join the NFL Furs group in NFL.com's "Predict the Pick" and see if you can correctly predict any of the first 32 draft picks on May 8.
We've got a private group set up just called, "NFL Furs" and if you go here and under the Groups tab you can search for the group name or you can try this link to go directly to the group, either way you'll need to sign up at NFL.com if you haven't already and when you get to the group you'll need to type in the password, "furriesareawesome" to join. If this all fails then note your email address to us and you'll get a direct invite. This doesn't affect the 2014 Prediction Challenge in any way but have fun regardless!
In other news the schedule was released today!
Let us hear what you think the biggest Home and Away game for your team will be this season.

Who did your team get that you're excited about? Who do you want that's still available?
40 days until the Draft, yeehaw!
But tell us, who surprised you with their spending and who disappointed you in letting someone go?
Who did your team get that you're excited about? Who do you want that's still available?
40 days until the Draft, yeehaw!
A solemn note
General | Posted 12 years agoWe give a fond farewell to William Clay Ford Sr. who was the owner of the Detroit Lions. He passed away on March 9th at the age of 88 and was the last surviving grandchild of automotive legend Henry Ford. His passing came in his sleep after battling with Pneumonia.
Rest in peace, good sir.
Rest in peace, good sir.
Bucs' New Look part 2
General | Posted 12 years agoWe were treated to a decently snazzy helmet upgrade last month and were told the uniform reveal would be in early March, well Here it is. Hints of creamsicle unis, hints of hockey jersey, are those digital clock numbers?
Let's hear your thoughts. Personally I think the numbers kill it.

Off-season Updates
General | Posted 12 years agoThe #1 ranked free agent is off the block now as New Orleans has placed their franchise tag on TE Jimmy Graham (the franchise tag is a designation each team can place on one of their unrestricted free agents which keeps them on the team for another season at the salary of an average of the top-5 paid players at that position without impacting the team's salary cap). Graham's salary is now just a hair above $7 million but his "camp" is expected to file a grievance with the NFL to have Jimmy paid as a wide receiver ($12.3 million) since more than half of his snaps in the 2013 season were in the WR slot.
Other notable recent franchise tags are the Jets' kicker Nick Folk and Panthers' defensive end Greg Hardy.
Other notable players that are still under free agent status (to name but a few): Redskins LB Brian Orakpo, Bills S Jarius Byrd, Raiders DE Lamarr Houston, Dolphins CB Brent Grimes, and Denver WR Eric Decker.
Big news as of today is that the NFL has announced the salary cap for 2014 has increased by a cool $10 million bringing the figure up to a total of $133 million. The League believes this is for the good of everyone but the fans think it only helps keep aging players. What are your thoughts?
The NFL Scouting Combine is now also over and while there are a lot of numbers to digest we'll list a few players that could vie for that #1 overall draft pick. Jadeveon Clowney, DE South Carolina, has been in the #1 talk for a while now and he backed it up with an impressive performance; Blake Bortles, QB UCF, was the only one of the big name quarterbacks to actually throw at the Combine and looked sharp in the throwing drills; Brandin Cooks, WR Oregon State, voted #1 college Wide Receiver definitely showed the part; Aaron Donald, DT Pitt, at 6'1" 285lbs Donald had plenty of nay-sayers but managed an impressive showing; Mike Evans, WR Texas A&M, biggest questions around him were his speed but he clocked in an impressive 40 time and looked good just about everywhere else.
And since I feel like writing more I'll list the top performer of each Combine drill:
40-yard Dash -- Dri Archer, RB Kent State -- 4.26 seconds
Bench Press -- Russell Bodine, C North Carolina -- 42 reps
Vertical Jump -- Ryan Shazier, OLB Ohio State -- 42"
Broad Jump -- Lache Seastrunk, RB Baylor -- 11'2"
3-cone Drill -- Daniel Sorensen, FS BYU -- 6.42 seconds
20-yard Shuttle -- Brandin Cooks, RB Oregon State -- 3.81 seconds (tied the record)
60-yard Shuttle -- Brandin Cooks, RB Oregon State -- 10.72 seconds (set the record)
That's all for now!

Bucs' New Look
General | Posted 12 years agoSo we may now be waist-deep in the Combine statistics and you can't find any news of anyone other than Manziel but in the midst of all that we were treated today to the unveiling of a brand new Buccaneers logo! At least, that's what we were lead to believe last week. Myself as a logo designer was very intrigued for what may be in store. Jump ahead to today and we learn that it's going to be an "enhanced" design rather than a re-make. Warren Sapp and Gerald McCoy did the honors of unveiling this: Enhanced Logo
You've still got the pewter and red, the flag is markedly larger, almost swooping around the back like an old Eagles' helmet. Then there's the "chrome" facemask that everyone has been buzzing about and as Sapp was keen to point out, the skull now has angry eyebrows.
That's not all though, on March 5th the Buccaneers will be unveiling their home and away uniforms. Last time they changed their look they won the Super Bowl so maybe 2014 is their year now? Super Bowl XLIX Champs, Tampa Bay. <_< >_>

Superbowl Weekend Matchup
General | Posted 12 years ago4 weeks of preseason games, 17 weeks of regular season games, and 3 weeks of playoffs have led the 2013/2014 season to where it is now: a matchup of seemingly epic proportions between the NFC's #1 Seattle Seahawks and the AFC's #1 Denver Broncos set to do battle at Superbowl XLVIII in "NY/NJ"
Seattle has held their ground all year and have allowed the fewest yards against and the fewest points against, they'll be put to the test as they will try to halt the high-flying offense Denver has to offer which, unlike Seattle, put up the most points and most yards this season (not to mention countless records broken by Manning and the team)
The Madden camp has already done their annual video game prediction which had the Broncos winning by 3 in OT (31-28) and they have a pretty good track record since they began this prediction method in 2004 (7-2).
Weather for the big game has been a huge topic of discussion since MetLife stadium is open to the elements and is the furthest north a Superbowl has ever been played.
Will cold weather play a factor? Will a key injury turn the tables? Will aliens use our distraction to their advantage and take over the world? We'll find out on Sunday!
While the turmoil of the NFL season is set to come to a close the NFL Furs group has its own Superbowl showdown between the last two standing Prediction Challenge participants Brute-force and Paskhowl!
Standard rules apply, you two so predict away! You have until SB:XLVIII kickoff.
Sunday February 2nd
Seahawks (15-3) "@" Broncos (15-3)
-Some out there might forget that the Seahawks used to be in the AFC West with the Broncos so they have a decent history with each other but they have only had one playoff meeting and that was back in 1983. In recent years Denver have only faced Seattle in preseason games so it's safe to say there's really no recent matchup history to talk about. #1 defense vs. #1 offense. Let's go!

The AFC playoff race is looking a lot clearer than the NFC going in to week 17. In the AFC Denver, New England, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis have all won their respective Divisions whith the Chiefs securing the 1st Wild Card. The Dolphins currently sit in the only open slot remaining as the 2nd Wild Card with the Ravens, Chargers, and Steelers still mathematically in the hunt.
In the NFC the only certainty currently is that the Seahawks and Panthers will be in the playoffs but every seed is still up for grabs as no one in the NFC has clinched their division (This was written before Week 16s MNF). Currently "in the hunt" are Philly, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Arizona, Dallas, and Green Bay all fighting for the final 4 playoff tickets.

Playoffs announcement!
General | Posted 12 years agoTiebreakers for the regular season are as follows:
More Overall Wins
Less Overall Losses
Number of Weekly Victories
Number of Perfect Weeks
Number of Hero Picks
Here is how the playoff system is going to work:
-While there will be a regular season winner based on total wins those victories won't carry you through the playoffs. You'll have to use your prediction prowess to get you through each of the four Playoff weeks if you want to be crowned the Season Champ.
-The top 10 players with the most wins in the Regular season get into the playoffs (using the tie-breakers mentioned above if necessary).
-During Wildcard Weekend those 10 players will compete in a free-for-all weekend similar to those of the Regular Season with the 8 best predictions moving on to a single elimination bracket-style run to the finish. Should tie-breakers be necessary we will be using the formula explained below.
-These 8 remaining players will recieve seeding #1-8 based on their regular season records. Bracket will be a standard setup of 1vs8, 2vs7, 3vs6, 4vs5.
-Brackets will not be moved or re-seeded.
-Since score predictions will be involved those will be the tie-breaker. Wins come first but ties are decided by the lowest total difference between your predicted score and the actual score combined between all games of that week ((difference between your home score and the actual home score)+(difference between your away score and the actual away score))

(If you notice in the second image Kai would have won this matchup because he went 4-0 for the week against Paskhowl's 2-2, but -if- id had come down to the score tie-breaker Paskhowl would have won.
-All that's left is to ask you guys if you would prefer, since the playoffs will be a bit more competitive, to submit notes/emails only instead of making your predictions for the week public in a journal? Let us hear your thoughts on this topic!!
And if you haven't yet don't forget to make your picks for this week! Week 16!

Number of Perfect Weeks

Week 16 Regular Season Matchups
General | Posted 12 years ago-During the regular season you are welcome to note us your selections in advance if you know you might be away for the weekend but we'd prefer if you could just respond to the journal with your picks. (Journal will be posted every Monday)
-You do not have to put score predictions in during the season but feel free to do so if you wish. Score predictions will be part of the Playoffs
-You may use a team name or a nickname when making picks otherwise we will just use your FA name.
-Please list all selections in one comment (Or in a continuation of your original comment if you are breaking up your picks for Thursday games, Sunday games, and Monday games). They can be as in-depth or as simple as you want. You are free to change your picks up until the first kickoff of that night of the week. Once the first kickoff for Thursday, Sunday, or Monday occurs no more predictions or alterations for that day will be allowed. If you miss a day feel free to make predictions for the other days of the week.
-At the end of 17 weeks the 10 players with the most wins will move into the Playoffs which will follow a similar format. In the event a game ends with a tie you will gain neither a Win nor a Loss.
-Finally, have fun. This group is here so you can enjoy furries and football =P
