So. I didn’t poor but in the chaos of moving my charger stopped working. It made getting online difficult on mobile and I can’t exactly upload and interact well on my phone. Add in I finally get the place and I move in but I have next to no cell service and the ISP isn’t set up yet so it’ll be another few days before I’m truly back. Alright so I've been rather silent for a while now. Figured I should probably say something so you know I didn't like get kidnapped in Indiana or something. I made it to Chicago and I'm officially here.

Well TL;DR the house my roommates and I were set to have? We didn't get it. Rented out from underneath us for whatever reason legal or otherwise but still 100% shitty. We're not homeless thank goodness. But conditions will be a little cramped for the short term. I've got employment now, and I think I'm already loving where I am despite only having had training and been invited out to meet most of the coworkers outside the office.

Like everything else in life - it ain't perfect at face value. But I'll get through it, and will probably have a better appreciation for it going forward. But for now? I'm officially in Chicago. I drive in Chicago. I'll be working in Chicago and I'm gonna love it and make the best of it.

And please, beware of people going around with FA profiles that are just your name with a (-) after it. The system lets them take credit on some links if someone has deactivated their page, but even worse, it looks like the real deal when they note you about commissions, payments, etc. I admittedly fell for it but since I wasn't looking to spend what I originally bid before I was outbid in a ych, I didn't end up buying into it.

I've never done a convention before. And honestly, this is all pretty damn new to me. Now, I'd helped set up conventions before - my college hosted a Kigacon some years back, I've helped a comicon, and so on and so on. So this is all not entirely new in the physical sense. But in terms of experience, this is my first furry convention to be sure. And I'm going to MFF in December. In person. Plane tickets already purchased and arrangements made. The whole nine yards.

And I am equal parts hype and anxiety over it lmfao. I dunno, I guess a part of me is afraid to step away from the "behind the screen" part of things? Like some people I'm going to be meeting up with already "know" me irl, so it's not going to be too weird, I think.

It's definitely been a wild ride thus far. Sometimes I don't even know just how or where or why I've done the things I did, or got to the place I'm at now, but I kinda did it in a way.
5 Days from now last year I was walking across the stage and obtaining my Bachelor's degree. I'm the first in my family to traditionally go to college and get out with a degree. At that point, with my mom's and dad's extended family there, my youger sisters screaming their lungs off near the Science building under the shade of one of the big trees of the great lawn, my professors done up in their robes looking proud as hell (especially my advisor, who to date still remains the Political Science Department's resident memelord), etc etc., I thought I could go no further up.

I started a job at a small local law firm, working basically as a paralegal, filling out applications to and subsequently even getting accepted into law school. I moved, like 3 times, and had to say goodbye to a lot of friends who all moved back home upstate while I remained where I am now. I started my semester, and within a couple months I was finally taking a plunge and becoming active in the community we're all in here. Art sharing, art buying/making, stories, (yes even RP shenanigans) and more. I found not just a part of myself that I didn't quite realize I WAS before, but I also was fortunate to discover a lot of friends in the meantime. There were some hiccups along the way: friends who are no longer friends, some mistakes that I made, some people who showed their true colors and who burned bridges with me and others....

...world events like what's been going on like crazy pretty much since the beginning of this year...

...but after all that happened, good or bad, I'm still incredibly happy to see what has become of myself, what has become of (mostly) everyone who I've met and engaged with, and much much more. Even now, I have plans for the summer and (hopefully) the fall semester starting August, depending on how things go internationally with current events as they are.

I say all this to say. I somehow lived a lot more of my life in the last 360 days than I might have lived for the entire 21-ish years of my life before them. And I look forward to the next year that comes from it.

To those who helped me along the way - y'all are the real MVPs. To those who clashed with me along the way, I ain't mad (mostly) and I do hope y'all are okay and find peace. So I'm a law student. I, like many law students, shove that fact (sorry lol) into roughly 60% of my conversations. That of course being a conservative estimate.

That being said, there's some things that I learn in law school that are INCREDIBLY useful for us in the outside furry world. Things my Property professor likes to call "25-cent legal terms." So here's a couple terms for people to learn about.

INTENT vs MOTIVE

Intentional actions is defined by the 3rd Restatement of Torts (paraphrasing) as an action that someone voluntarily makes against another person, anticipating or having knowledge to a substantial certainty that something is going to happen because of hte action taken.

Motive is defined as the logic or reasoning behind the action that someone otherwise voluntarily makes.

Now that we have that out of the way, I'll rephrase both in the most simplest terms.
Intent is the "what" of your actions. Motive is your "why" of the action. If I pull a weapon on you in a dark alleyway, I know for a fact that you are going to believe to some degree of certainty that I'm going to attack you regardless of whether I do it. I may have wanted to show off something cool or maybe the "weapon" was really a gift. But the reasoning or my motive is irrelevant when I know that "Hmm... bringing you to a dark alleyway to show you this cool bat I found might make you think I'm gonna swing it at you."

Now take that logic and apply it to anything, including but not limited to a conversation or even a comment on someone's profile/ piece of art. If you do something knowing how someone may respond, especially if that response is in the negative, then maybe you shouldn't do it? "Oh I was just bantering." "Oh I thought it would be funny!" "Oh I didn't mean for it to come out that way"
Those responses become moot because you were so focused on the "why," you failed to realize WHAT you were doing.

So yeah. TL:DR think about your actions. And not just "why" you do something. Because if we're still hung up on "what" you did, maybe the reason isn't the issue here at all, and the action itself is.
