A Reflection/Analyzation of Flora's Day Off
General | Posted 3 years agoI tried my best to replicate Tom's style, and I hope I made it quite convincing for most. I usually overanalyze things, and there are some things I want to type about that piece so I can get it out of my system.
When first started sketching out the piece, I was out of practice drawing female bodies, so there might be something wrong with the final submission. I did discover however that Tom most likely used 1/2 of a base circle to figure out chin placement. I mostly use 1/3 of the base circle to figure out chin placement, so I was a bit confused at first. The colorings of the sketch was hard to replicate, but I found out how to derive shades from Tom's base sketch color. Other than that, Tom's base is what I consider "normal", as in his sketching process follows general guidelines etc.
Drawing bodies is great and all, but I haven't actually drawn a mattress being sat on before. At first, I tried replicating Flora's dakimakura design, but I didn't like it. I tried my own thing (the preview), but it still felt off. I eventually settled with trying to replicate Mike's dakimakura design. I didn't know how to replicate that design, but I experimented a bit. I do not know what Tom's art program is, but by using an airbrush around Flora and using a finger tip tool, I was able to somewhat replicate the design with a few more adjustments.
I replicated Tom's processes from his sketches and what he tends to do to create things such as sweat, but why does it still feel unofficial? And that people would probably know that my submission was not from Tom at first glance? I think what makes Tom's art unique is his subtle sketchy line art. Although for many people Tom's blue-and-white line art seems to be extremely well defined, when I looked closer and overanalyzed it, I found that it has that certain sketchy feeling that I cannot replicate easily with my current abilities. I simply cannot sketch as well as Tom right now. Well, if I wanted it to look "official" I could've with enough time (like making line art thicker (edit: I did lol)), but I'm still exhausted from analyzing pixels.
What do I think of my piece? Well, I think it is acceptable. A few more adjustments here and there and I would've made a more convincing piece, but that's OK. Flora's face seems a bit off for me though, and I do not know why.

Maybe I didn't flip the canvas...
PS: If I want to color this, would definitely need to trim the line width.
