Chicago mayoral election...
General | Posted 15 years ago...is on Feb 22. While Rahm gets all the attention, I am putting my endorsement behind Carol Moseley-Braun. If you live in the city, be sure to vote, and don't let Rahm run this place like he was running behind the scenes at the White House! (I'm not sure I trust that guy.)
Oh, and a happy belated new year to everyone. May we all have many months of having to go and x-out dates because we fucked up and wrote 2010 by accident :p

difficulty
General | Posted 15 years agoThis month has been quite difficult for a lot of people I know, and I want everyone who has their friends and family to be with this year to not take for granted the generosity of others. Sure, the rituals can end up being contrite, and the weather isn't the best, but the holidays give everyone an excuse to at least see each other, and maybe have a nice dinner or something.
I'm encountering some financial strains which will probably get more difficult in the upcoming month or so. I had a vacation planned some months before when things were better, but due to a variety of circumstances, I may have to walk away from it. I've got a self-imposed project deadline looming around that same time, and many of my friends are also going to be having financial difficulties making the trip as well. While I don't want to let any of them down by not being able to make it, I'm weighing my options as to whether it would be prudent to continue to attempt to make the trip considering the additional investments it would require. That, and the logistics are becoming increasingly complicated.
Oh yeah, and just the other day, my computer fried and took out a bunch of my hardware all at once. That definitely didn't help things. Only just now have I been able to make the necessary repairs to get back up to speed with my work-related duties :\
So, anyway. Normally, I don't talk about this kinda stuff on my journal, but I figured it would help me put things in perspective. Coming to terms with a difficult reality is something which takes time. Originally, I was gonna try and take some commissions, do some ebay and etc. to try and make my little trip next month possible, but I don't think I'm gonna be doing that anymore. Sorry to disappoint anyone who might've wanted a commission from me; maybe I'll think about doing it at some point in the future, but who knows.
Please do your best to cherish what you have, and try not to be resentful to the ones you love this holiday season. Most people have good intentions, and it would be short-sighted and possibly even selfish to be that way. In this economy, lots of people are struggling to various degrees, but again, during the holiday season we're given the excuse to try our best to bring a small bit of happiness to the ones we love. Sometimes, no manner of good intentions can help from unexpected circumstances or disappointments occurring, so be prepared to have a lot of patience and forgiveness this year as well.
And finally, please excuse my excess sappiness. Good intentions, and all that...

Pixel artist woes ....
General | Posted 15 years agoWarning, this is kinda a work-related venting post...
Edit: Guys, I hope this journal didn't come out the wrong way; this is not a call for open applications. We've got a formal process for that. If you're a serious artist then you'll already know where to apply (cause we apparently listed in the main place for this kinda thing) -- otherwise I'll contact you if your work is what I want in this project. Thank you for your understanding. ~
Okay, so. I've been really stressed out and full of anxiety lately, mainly because the tile engine I've been working on for about the past year has finally reached a state where we can start making mostly-complete maps for the game. I've kept mostly quiet about this until very recently, because of various reasons. However, recently, my restrictions have been relaxed a little bit, as we've decided that one way to increase publicity to this project is for me to do some blogging about it, or whatever. That's something which you guys might start to see coming soon (possibly on the group's official site), but I digress.
See, as a result of reaching this point in the game's development, we're supposed to be "kicking it into high gear" and allocating the budget for assets, hiring people to make these assets, and setting more focused and specific deadlines on the way towards the game's commercial release. This is where it gets a little hairy for me, because since I'm behind a lot of the aspects of tying the game's form into its functionality, I've been put into the role of evaluating all the potential sprite artists who want the job of working on the game.
Now, as most of you know, serious professionals need to be paid for their works, and the prices they'll take for them vary wildly depending on how good they are, what the demand for their services are, and how much personal interest they take in your project. What my problem is, is that this is the first time I've had to deal with people who have no prior interest to this project coming in, who we're gonna be paying to do work, presumably to my specifications, using money that doesn't belong to me. This is extremely nerve-wracking to me, for some reason.
Here's the thing. There are a few artists in particular who I'd love to see do some work on this project. Character art specifically, since comparatively speaking, tile artists are a dime a dozen and the specifications for it are more technical in nature (ie: how shit fits into a tilemap) rather than artistic. Most of the applications we've been getting that I've been reviewing are simply unacceptable or unsatisfactory to me, for various reasons. Either the art quality isn't up to par, they don't have a good grasp on color theory, their style doesn't fit, or they just can't do a fluid animation if their life depended on it (a big problem, it seems, for way too many sprite artists!).
All I've really, really been wishing for is that some super-talented artist who does stuff just the way I'd like to see it apply, and not be asking for a pound of flesh from our art budget. It's not happened, yet. I don't know how the heck I'm gonna respond to all these e-mails if we don't necessarily find the artist we're looking for right away. I might have to lie and say that their application is "under review" and that we'll contact them if their services are necessary in the future. I really hate the fact that I've been put in a position where I have to respond to some of these things at all, honestly. I can sorta see by some of the 'folios why some 2d games just don't have the same "oomph" that they used to anymore in the art dept., since there's a whole lotta "just don't care" in there, and hiring multiple artists results in a mishmash of styles.
Anyway, here I am in a quandry while I wait for maybe a few days more receiving applications that don't seem serious enough until we stop taking them. I'm stuck between that, and going out and contacting some of the artists I'd like to do work for us directly, and not looking like I mean serious business. In a way, I'm hoping that by venting about it, I can work up the bearings to go and try and make those contacts. This is a commercial project, but our group's only got one big game under our belt, and it's a casual game, so I'm worried about trying to contact any serious-looking sprite artists. I'll probably have to wait for the formal applications process to run its course before I can contact them, anyway. In the meantime, I'll probably be somewhere between "seriously distracted" and "nervous wreck" while coding some more improvements to the internal tools..
I'm really hoping these contacts will pan out....

What's with the Sonic 4 / SFR comparisons?
General | Posted 15 years agoAfter about 3-4 people all in different places mentioned a comparison of these 2 projects, probably thanks in part to some mainstream videogame blogs highlighting the Sonic Fan Remix project lately and it going viral, I'm hearing a lot of comparisons about how 2 guys made a game that's "better" than Sonic 4. Or, at least demonstrating how an amateur game can be made to look as good as Sonic 4 and play better. I want to give you guys my 2 cents.
The graphics in both Sonic 4 and SFR are great. The music in Sonic 4 is awful. The music in SFR is uninspired, and the level designs are just poor copies of the originals. None of this shit even comes close in comparison to the level of polish and total gameplay experience as the first 2 Sonic games.
It will take a single-minded, dedicated team and assloads of money to ever make another Sonic game that people won't feel compromised on, because that is the standard level of quality that people had come to expect from them when the bar was set some 20 odd years ago. Think about that, and think about the games Sega was making back then, and how much they invested into them. On the arcade side, they spent insane amounts of money to make what were essentially movie/theme park quality experiences in an arcade cockpit. When the first 16-bit Sonic games were being made, the intention was to take Sega's 1st-class arcade experience and put it in your living room; a very lofty goal. That is where the bar is set, and it is set very high.
In conclusion, I think all this hype and comparisons between Sonic 4 and Sonic Fan Remix is ridiculous. It's like people comparing a mcdonalds hamburger to a whopper when you know what a real hamburger tastes like.
Cya.
P.S. If I made a short copybook/doujin of 8/12p for online sales, would anyone here buy it? Would you be willing to pay $5 for it? Sound off in the comments; I need some extra spending cash so I can make it to DC this January...

Hi FA admins
General | Posted 15 years agoI seem to remember these types of exploits being a problem in the past.
yak, you remember this discussion we had about a generic security function to pass arguments from any sort of user interaction which requires you to be logged in on the site? I'm not a web coder by any means (man do I hate web coding, call me old-fashioned), but I would have assumed that the least you guys could've done was to add a HTTP_REFERER check on the links which provide user actions or something.
This needs to be done for basically every single link-based action the site provides to logged-in users. Watches, faves, submission and journal removal, all of it. And you should probably throw in some other shit for good measure (sorry, again, I don't typically deal in web security but even to me the referrer stuff seems obvious) if you do end up writing a function to handle all the link-based actions. Pass them all to a single function first, then call the function on the server-end where necessary. That will reduce the potential issues you may have from these things in the future to a single point of failure, and you can adjust security in the calling function accordingly. A simple sanity check is probably a good idea with input boxes/things that utilize HTTP_POST data too, but I wouldn't expect it to be handled by the same calling procedure, just that you guys make sure to tell your coder(s) to have ALL user interactions first go through a single security procedure (or procedure type) first so that you don't accidentally "miss" one when you fix fuckups like this in the future.
One of the reasons I'm prompted to mention this is because even after
dragoneer put out damage control PR, the exploit is still all over the place, and it's not just about hidden comments. Any of you guys ever wonder why
lexyeevee is getting tons of watches lately? (That's also kinda why I'm not linking to his journal entry explaining this, since all of you guys who are still reading up to this point already know about it)
One last thing; killing the messenger might serve as short-term damage control but I thought you guys should know by now that it does not do anything to alleviate the underlying problem. The toothpaste is already out of the tube, now that people know this exploit exists. It's just a matter of who decides to use it and for what purpose. You guys are all fucked until all cross-site request forgeries are fixed, for as long as FA remains online.
I think Eevee (perhaps) hadn't learned the lesson the rest of us had back in the day about finding exploits in FA -- never do your own dirtywork and all that. If it were me, I'd simply warn you guys about going public with the information and wash my hands of any responsibility as to what would come of it. Realistically, the ball was still in your guys' court, but because Eevee himself decided to demonstrate the exploit to you, you decide to ban him, just like you did with the other guys before him ('sup, nrr). Would you really prefer an instruction manual to such exploits to be posted publicly instead in the future, and wait for a really bad dude to utilize it? Y'all should've hopped on the damn bus right away, before there was an opportunity to wreck havoc, and yet, I'm still posting here while pretty much all of these exploits are still exploitable.
(And a warning to anyone else thinking of using link forgery: The admins are watching, and will ban you for any shenanigans, so don't do it, even if it's funny or their fault for not fixing the fucking thing by now and is as easy as posting a link in an <img> tag )

Doogtopia Radio news
General | Posted 15 years agoHey hey. News on doogtopia radio front. Yes, it's still alive, miraculously. I removed a large number of songs from Rick Astley's discography, because they were frankly horrible, really boring, and really only interesting at Xmas time for the most part. There was some positive feedback from removing these. I was also asked to remove a lot of SAW music, but I'll evaluate how frequently it comes up before doing that. There's a nice bit of SAW (Stock Aitken Waterman, a production group big on the "pop 80s sound") on the radio but it doesn't completely sink the listenability. I might trim that, eventually, too, though.
Also, I was thinking of getting the latest couple Capsule albums which aren't on the station yet (blame fzsw for using new Capsule on his fursuit videos), so keep your ears peeled for that.
If you haven't heard Doog before, why not give it a shot? It's on 24/7, playing the finest in retro, jazz, chiptunes, demoscene and whatever else I usually like to listen to, all served up by a magical computer DJ completely at random :V

Adventure!
General | Posted 15 years agoHey hey. So, I figured I'd give an update on what's been happening with me lately. Last Thursday, I got my wisdom teeth removed. Man, it didn't hurt much at first, but by day 3 it was pretty terrible. The pills they gave me made me dizzy and act stupid, and tell people lots of personal shit. Nice. Also, they suppressed my appetite, which is bad because my body tends to process the shit out of what I eat before letting me pass it.
As a result, I had severe constipation on day 4 and 5, which was very very painful. That's what I get for wanting solid food so badly. Also, one of my stitches came out and I had to remove it myself, which is quite unsanitary and can be potentially dangerous. I'm scheduled to get the rest of them removed by my dentist this Friday.
Shortly after my surgery, one of my co-workers (who happens to live about 12 timezones away) decided that it would be a good time to talk to me about the progress of the long-term project I've been tasked to do pretty much on my own for the past year. Some crazy shit happened, and it seems that my job is changing directions. What this means is there's some bad news and good news.
The bad news is, for those of you who knew what it was I was working on (sorry, not gonna talk about it in this journal!), that project is being put on hold. It was taking way too long to develop, and I didn't have any help from the rest of the team, and just in the past month or so I started to give up entirely on completing it in MMF and switching to C++ instead (which would've created further delay in the project).
The good news is, the work I've done in the past year will not go to waste. I created a very powerful mapping engine, which will now hopefully be spun into an exciting hack-and-slash adventure game! And, hopefully, it will be done sooner, rather than later. ;3
As a result, over the past few days, I've been doing a lot of work writing design documents, coming up with some basic assets, and doing some coding tests (including learning High-Level Shader Language) which should all prove to be very useful once the game gets to the polishing stage. My primary inspirations for the project going in have been Neutopia, Crusader of Centy, Crystalis, and to a smaller degree Soul Blazer and some of the Ys games. The boss's primary inspiration for the project is TLoZ and LTTP, and has been heavily influencing the design documents. I know how popular such a game is, but I will strive to make ours stand out and be unique in its own right as the game continues to be developed.
I might have some stuff for you other devs to play around with like pixel shader programs, who knows. But in the meantime, have a little icon I designed so I can mess around with .fx shaders in visual studio: http://nobuyuki.gpknow.com/temp/fxfile.ico

As part of the release celebrations, Faerie Solitaire is now on sale for 30% off -- that's just $3.49, so why not give it a shot? If you're not so much into casual, maybe gift a friend or relative who is? >w<
Thanks so much for all your support over the years, guys, and I hope we can bring many new exciting games to y'all in the future. (Perhaps Kyubi might make a comeback one of these days?!)

FAMICOMPO 7
General | Posted 15 years agoat the very last minute, I decided to enter a song. Voting begins on the 5th. So, make sure to listen to all the songs and enjoy yourself!!!!!!
Here was a bunch of live stream recordings of our synclisten to the entries: http://justin.tv/surasshu
I will post my song after voting ends. I kinda want to fix it up a little bit and maybe extend it. I will say this, though, I was completely and utterly destroyed by pretty much everyone who entered. It was THAT competitive this year. So enjoy all the awesome tunes :3

kaittycatInteresting quote of the day.
General | Posted 15 years agoThis quote came from the supreme court case Lawrence v. Texas, the 2003 case which struck down Texas's anti-sodomy laws:
If moral disapprobation of homosexual conduct is ‘no legitimate state interest’ for purposes of proscribing that conduct ... what justification could there possibly be for denying the benefits of marriage to homosexual couples exercising ‘the liberty protected by the Constitution’? Surely not the encouragement of procreation, since the sterile and the elderly are allowed to marry.
Which justice said it?
None other than Antonin Scalia.
Perry v. Schwarzenegger, coming soon to a supreme court near you.

I think I learned something about submissions
General | Posted 15 years agoMost people apparently really, really like color pictures over black and white. I am wondering if that has anything to do with it making an easier to scan thumbnail or whatever, but the disparity to me is much more surprising than I would have thought considering the context of my subject matter (drawing-wise). I wonder if this extends to most artists.
Note: this phenomenon doesn't seem to discriminate between adult or clean artwork. If it's colored, it seems to get a statistically significant boost in hits
Edit: I should also note that I typically do not draw things in color, since I tend to oversaturate stuff lately, and my shading is not the best. It is much easier for me to get away with contrast in tones in black and white than it is in color, since my tendency is to leave the lower half of luminosity unused (LCD phenomenon?)

oh no chiptunes have gone mainstream
General | Posted 15 years agohttp://www.di.fm/chiptunes/
A bunch of people who I know seemed amused/bemused hearing their stuff on this station. It's news to me! However it seems to be a mix of authentic chiptunes, mod files, and hipster "8-bit" stuff, which pretty much I guess would make sense if this indeed is supposed to represent the mainstream.
Personally, I'm not sure what to think, but at least they tag and label the stuff, so in theory it should be pretty easy to get the songs if they're any good. Also, from what other people whose stuff was on this have been saying, it seems like di.fm basically just scraped free labels and places with lax licensing to be able to broadcast the stuff without having to run into copyright problems with any of the artists.
Congrats folks for breaking into a wider audience; let's hope that the good outweighs the luggage that comes with it.

The 80s song of the day :3
General | Posted 15 years agohttps://youtu.be/C7qCaCcfjXg
paraphrased quote from coda: "It's like a grown up demo song!"
Well, maybe an early 90s one, but now you know who they were copying before they decided to go "epic" flyby style. Very very short period between SLL's "HiNRG Pop" period and that btw! Very short, like 1989-1991. But still, it's part of my generation. This is squarely an easy-listening pop tune. Enjoy the cheezy goodness :D

Sometimes I wonder if these observations I make...
General | Posted 15 years ago...are lost on almost everyone, or what. Every once in a long while I notice something that gets me super psyched. This one I discovered a while ago, but I thought I would share it with you guys because of its relative obscurity. (Also at the same time I can test and see if I can figure out how to get journal youtube embedding to work :B )

Here's one of the more memorable scenes from Streets of Fire, a movie . See, while today, it would seem that a lot of people are on a "Retro" kick back to the 80s, but back in the 80s, they were on a 1950s Retro kick. Many of you old enough will remember this, but that wasn't the main observation I wanted you guys to notice!!!
If you guys are geeks, you're gonna love this. In the movie, the group performing the song is called "Ellen Aim and The Attackers". For some reason, even though I'd never seen Streets of Fire growing up, it reminded me the hell out of something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Then, whammo, a lightbulb went on in my head one day.

Good old Bubblegum Crisis, an anime staple of the late 80s and early 90s. This is 2:14 into the very first episode, and of course the music was a big added bonus to the series. It appears, though, that Blade Runner wasn't the only piece of pop culture that it made homages to! It's funny I'd never noticed anything like this before, but surely when BGC first came out, someone must've noticed. The group's name is called "Priss and the Replicants" in the anime.
I guess one of the reasons anime kept me going throughout the shittiest parts of the 90s was because a lot of the shows were still essentially stuck in the 80s (until it became mainstream, at least). Just thought a few of you guys might appreciate some silly parallels like this; it might kick off a few nostalgia machines in a few of you, even if this sorta crap might be relatively obscure nowadays :3
(Just like how for example, many memes from Golden Era cartoons have become very obscure; I hope that some of the quirks from my era are not completely lost and obscured by its new modernization of it...)
Edit: I'll figure out how to embed youtube videos somehow....

Haikus are easy, but sometimes they don't make sense?
General | Posted 15 years agoHaikus are easy
but sometimes they don't make sense
Refrigerator
Something's been bugging me a while about this haiku. A bunch of people know about it already, but for the life of me, I swear the origin of it came before the internet. In fact, the primary reason I write this journal is because I get this weird feeling that I originally wrote this haiku, or that I inadvertently stole it from another source when writing it. See, I submitted this very haiku as a school assignment from my freshman year in high school.
http://www.threadless.com/product/6.....s_are_easy_but
That was 1998. But as you can see, this guy's got it on a shirt claiming he came up with it his senior year in high school (he's 23, meaning that his claim of origination is about 5 years later than my very clear memory of this assignment and my class's reaction to it).
Here's where it gets a little hairy. In my memory, I felt like at the time, the haiku I submitted to class might or might not've been completely original. All I remember was that it was the most clever of all the haiku I submitted at the time, and the one that got everyone's attention. What I am hoping you guys can do for me here is try and find out where this haiku really came from. My suspicion is that I might've lifted it from one of the books I read when I was a kid, possibly one of Beverly Cleary's "Ramona" books, but I cannot find any information of the haiku online that goes back more than a few years. If it were in a publication, I think I would've found out by now by Googling it, but alas, no luck.
And yet, if it weren't in a publication, how could this guy have come up with the same haiku, unless it's just a huge coincidence (or perhaps already a meme by then)? You have to remember that internet memes weren't as prevalent at that time, so the only thing I can imagine other than lifting it from a book would be for it to have become a meme through teachers chain-mailing the thing around.
If you guys could help me trace the history and origins of this haiku, I would greatly appreciate it. This has bugged me ever since I first heard it again online a couple years ago. If on the unlikely chance I really did come up with this haiku and it's not just some funny thing a much more clever person penned years before I first did, I would like to know how it became an internet meme (and a t-shirt, too).
(Additional information, FYI: Most stuff I can prove that I had some involvement in that is meme status, I can trace backwards to where it first gained traction, because there's a clear record of it on my computer. This one predates Google -- and indeed most forms of social networking online -- so I'm vastly curious as to the ultimate medium whereby the meme caught on.)

FA ideas
General | Posted 15 years agobefore FA started to aggressively block programs which interact with it, such as FAGet and other harvesters (maybe not a properly constructed wget string, though....), I was thinking of some ideas to solve my problem of not really being up to speed on the FA stuff. Most of it had to do with doing what FA should essentially be doing already, which is to make all inbox data into streams which are appended on a regular basis (and also cleared on a regular basis).
Pixiv chooses to filter out a user's watched artists and displays them in a custom browse context, rather than keeping everyone's submissions in an inbox, which may be a bit heavier on the initial load (I couldn't say for sure) per user, but on a server-wide basis would have to push far less often per submission because there is no push to every user's inbox on each submission. That's the server's rationale for implementing it -- the personal rationale here is that I've got 15000 submissions in my inbox and there's no way I'll be able to view them all in a timely manner so long as I have more important things I've gotta do; contractual obligations and such. Same probably goes with most people.
My solution to that originally was to write an app which logged into FA and constantly nuked the submissions, while assembling them into a sorta custom feed on the client side and gave me pop-up notifies at an interval I set if I wanted, or just manually click to open a feed if I didn't. Part of the problem with this was that on FA's old login system, your session would expire if another client was found to be logged in as you, which apparently was done on purpose, if not for the reason of stopping 3rd party apps, at least as a happy side effect of their (formerly?) poor attempts to secure the site.
What FA really needs, if it can't completely adjust the tagging system to supplant the entire inbox, is to create mini RSS feeds for users which periodically prune themselves. In this manner, users can actually ignore content which is of no interest to them such as journals, and use their RSS readers to subscribe to content that is.
If FA were to completely rewrite the inbox and browse system, it should be made consistent with an advanced tagging system, which would probably simplify the whole thing. The DA paradigm, while cool when it first came out, is way too inconsistent to be easy to maintain and add new features to. When ArtPlz was in development, we took a tag philosophy early on, albeit with some strong moderator-influenced "category" tags, since back then no one was sure that such a system could really work site-wide and still be as organized as a DA-style one. Sites like e621, wildcritters and danbooru/gelbooru have proven that tag systems with a good community can practically maintain themselves.
Pixiv takes it a step further. Combining the advanced tagging seen in danbooru-like systems, they allow artists to set properties of submissions to allow for how much others can contribute child posts and tags to their submission. Any number of special properties can be added to a submission via tags or meta tags, making new features easy to implement and that such a system is forwards-compatible.
Pixiv added "manga" support later on, which was easily compatible with the existing system. One's "Watch list" is replaced with a custom browsing context which simply filters out all submissions by artist tag (with only the artists you watch tagged in the search query, automatically), again, totally compatible with the existing paradigm of tag-based browsing, with no crazy inbox stuff necessary for the bulk of the work server-side. Again, Pixiv took it a step further with regards to favorites, as when making favorites, the user can add their own personal tags to filter them out when using the browser in a favorites context. This is great for watchers who would like to organize or search their favorites, especially those who have a lot of them.
In many cases, as FA grows, the system which we currently have will continue to show its age, and the limitations will become more apparent over time. With no API to interface with the site (and worse, active discouragement of any client interface outside the browser whatsoever), working around these limitations will be restricted to the existing developer staff, while the rest of the users will simply have to suffer in waiting.
I once again will hope that FA will reconsider opening up 3rd party client interfacing with the site in the near future.

Push
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm pushing my previous journal off the front page. I'm still kinda unhappy with how naive I have discovered many of my peers to be, though. Whatever though, I guess that sorta justifies the whole drifting away thing I've been doing lately.

'Draw Muhammed Day' is shameful.
General | Posted 15 years agoAnd those of you who support it or FA's condoning of it should really be ashamed of yourselves.
BTW, tomorrow is "Draw a Nigger" day. While we do permit artistic freedom, Please keep in mind that derogatory, sexual and/or outright insulting niggers will not be permitted. Keep them clean, respectful. Derogatory niggers will be removed.

50000 page hits!
General | Posted 15 years agoWow, I wonder who was number 50k?! My first 40,000 hits came pretty darn fast. The last 10,000 took practically forever. I am assuming this is because I'm not doing as much OCS with my friends anymore, and I apologize for that. I'm aware that save for a few things I made here that became memes, I owe most of my visitors from back then to the 'sexy' stuff, haha. But for all of you who are following for my serious music and other projects too, thank you. I really appreciate that.
Here's to a bright future :3
