adventures at FERMILAB
General | Posted 17 years agoToday I went exploring at Fermilab National Accelerator. If you guys don't know what it is, think "Large Hadron Collider" before there was a Large Hadron Collider. Security was pretty lax and since it was a Tuesday afternoon, there was almost nobody there -- giving me easy access to many places that might otherwise have required trying to talk my way past extra security checkpoints :V
Most of the checkpoints were unmanned, though, so I got some pretty sweet pics you guys are gonna love.
http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f.....b%20adventure/
3 pages of awesome stuff!! Starting off with the visitor's center, I moved onto the sculptures of Fermilab, and finally started to explore places off the beaten path to show you guys some of the gritty side of science.....
Be sure to check out the awesome underground entrance pics, the warning signs, and the van with the US Government plates!! Wild stuff :D

Please help a good artist...
General | Posted 17 years agoHello, thanks for reading. Sorry for not knowing exactly how to approach this, since I've never written a journal of this nature before, but I want to help a friend of mine who is a highly underrated artist get a few more potential customers by posting something about it on my FA journal.
My friend's name is
garu, and this is his first time taking commissions. When I found out that so far he hasn't had many (any?) customers, it made me kinda sad -- Mr. Garu recently took up a job working many hours at a pay rate that many people where I come from would call unfair wages, just so he could save up to visit the US. Specifically, he wants to go to AnthroCon in July! Because I knew that he could do a lot more for himself in the long run by taking commissions, I'd always given him the encouragement to try and take a few to help him pay for his trip, and to build confidence in becoming a better artist. The supplemental income would help so that hopefully in the long run he doesn't end up stuck in a crappy below-minimum-wage job forever, and has some freedom to further pursue his career as well.
Now, all I'm asking is for you guys to take a look at his art and see if you like it. Maybe consider getting your character drawn, or recommending Garu to somebody who likes his style of kemono art. I think his rates are reasonable, and as a bonus, he's an up-and-coming artist who's improving rapidly, so it's a good opportunity to get something neat at a good price before demand is high xD
Here is one of his latest works, and it is a really good example of what you can expect to get.
So what do you guys think? Maybe you can help out a friend of mine? I'd be pretty grateful if I helped with even just one commission, and I'm sure he would be too!
Here's his commissions journal detailing rates and samples:

Thanks again guys for reading this journal.

Coda linked this today, and I was like "woaaaaah". Great use of the YM chip and stuff. I love FM tunes (and hope to make more of them in the near future myself, especially in this style), but I was wondering... anyone ever heard of this guy? Know what his normal handle is when he's not making stuff in this style? I want more of this artist's music :9

FA Search function?

strange stuff inspired by "das nulle comikke the animation"
General | Posted 17 years ago
nullenigma went and showed me today something weird on sheezyart which seems to be a ripoff of the old animation I did for his silly comic of foxes and conveyor belts:http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ngKBdg66nRw&feature=related
I'm assuming this guy's a popular animator on newgrounds or sheezy or something, cause it has over 300k hits, holy crap. And of course there is no accreditation, but that is to be expected since my flash has been floating around the chan boards for a couple years now.
What surprises me the most is how much this popularized Vim's song. I'm actually kinda glad he's got the attention now, but I have to wonder if it's the kind of 'good attention' one would want, since most of them are pretty young people comparatively speaking! Guys who barely know or remember chiptunes as they were.... Anyway, there's your fun and interesting weird tidbit of the day.
P.S. I wrote a cranky journal on sheezyart (which I left around 2005) in response to this flash animation!!! I only kinda wish I was famous enough for people to know who these guys borrow ideas from. Guess that means I should just keep trying to make more new ideas in an attempt to stay fresh and original, yah?
Happy new year everybody
angry journalist throws his shoe at the president
General | Posted 17 years agohttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/bush
yes! It's true! While in Iraq, the president got two shoes thrown at him by an angry journalist. If anyone remembers the toppling of the Saddam statue, you might remember they were beating it with their shoes. In their culture this is considered a serious insult, something akin to being dirt beneath one's feet.

Who's going to Anthrocon?
General | Posted 17 years agoI was going to reserve a room at the Westin, but I couldn't find anyone who could help me split the bill that I knew other than my friend
garu ..... So, ideally, we'd want at least 2 other people to help split the costs of the room across the con time. Since I didn't register right away, it seems the doubles room options are no longer available with Westin, but they're OK for Doubletree.
What's the scoop? I've never been to AC before, and frankly I don't know what to expect. I'm really scared of going without anyone for us to meet up with there, since it's not a familiar place to me. Hellllllppppppp................

Governor arrested
General | Posted 17 years ago6AM, Tuesday December 9, Chicago's north side. Governor Rod Blagojevich was woken up this morning by a phone call from the FBI. Very soon after, he was arrested by federal agents for allegedly "shaking up" prospective candidates for Barack Obama's vacated senate seat.
For those of you who have an idea what that phrase means, it should bring visions of old school gangsters, because trying to get paid to "sell" the seat to a candidate was exactly what he was caught on tape claiming he was going to do / already in the process of doing. I imagine the 6am phone call went a little like this:
PHONE rings. BLAGOJEVICH picks up the phone and answers.
BLAGOJEVICH: "uhhh..... hello?"
PHONE: "Good morning."
BLAGOJEVICH: "hi, who is this?"
PHONE: "How are you? I'm detective John Kimble. Now I'm going to ask you a bunch of questions, and I want to have them answered immediately."
BLAGOJEVICH: "What, Quinn, is that you?"
PHONE: "I'm a cop you idiot! Haha, just keeding. Rod, dis is da Governator. I just called to tell you that FBI agents are at your house and have come to arrest you. You might want to get out of there in a hurry, or there will be a lot of people that are unhappy with the results and these kinds of things. I'd offah you a ride in my helicopter, since ah'm cuerrently trying to get back in bed with Maria (and these kinds of things), baht seence that seems like a longshot I thought I'd give you some advice, governor to girly-governor: Get out of the house. NAOW"

life stuff and xmas
General | Posted 17 years agoSo like, I suppose I'm getting ready for Christmas. Unusually, I've been not the happiest person this time of year, so for the people who care and stuff, thanks a lot for being around to cheer me up and all that. I'm hoping to get back into being productive sometime soon, and not as spastic with my contributions and all that other stuff. I've also been thinking about getting some people presents for xmas for my friends and family even though it's not the smartest thing in the world for someone who can barely afford it, lol... Not sure on that one just yet, but this site is an awesome place to get some cheap gifts (you can thank
smithtv for that find)
Anyway, for those of you who don't want to torture yourselves hearing about the problems of others, you can stop reading now. Otherwise, I'm about to vent on some issues that have been bugging me lately. Here goes...
First, I'm totally not liking this job I've been having. It's been 3 years and while the job is relatively easy, it's a huge brain drain and I feel like I'm wasting my life away on it instead of pursuing a career that matches my life goals. That being said, it's putting me through school...
Speaking of, I'm also really close to graduating school and it's like, putting me at a crossroads I'm not sure I'm exactly ready for, despite the fact I'm a few years older than almost all of my friends and feel rather worthless in this regard because of what little I've had to show for myself the past hmm, 5 years or so. No grand works or projects completed, only some half-completed things really.
Combine both of those things above and it compounds the problems with the idea of complete independence from los padres -- this is something I almost never talk about, cause it's not like anyone has to know this or anything, but I pretty much still live at home with one parent since all my siblings moved (or were kicked) out and the other parent spends most of their time now working in a union manufacturing job (omg like the kind you hear about in the news) trying to I suppose help pay the bills.
My income level does not grant me the opportunity to live on my own without someone to help split the bills, which effects how I decide to proceed with these goals that I have -- I do not want to live with somebody who I couldn't stand or couldn't trust, so I merely choose to continue to live at home and indirectly help pay mortgage via a monthly rent.
I pay a portion of rent that amounts to about the same as I would pay if I were living with a roommate or a couple of roommates in this area. The main problem is that I don't really know anyone around here that I can trust who I'd be bothered living with, and I am concerned that moving out would lock me into this shitty job or to this area which would make it quite difficult to fully pursue a career choice which would make me happy. I think I felt this way by the time I had quit my last job, so maybe it's nearing the beginning of another cycle.....
The economy concerns me with regards to job opportunities and more specifically, loans. The United States is a society based around debt. I believe the majority of people are taught to be materialistic and am strongly against borrowing money to pay for things I cannot afford the moment I purchase the product. Thus, I've spent 5 years putting myself through school because I refuse to take out a student loan like the rest of my siblings. On the other hand, my debt is (and always has been) zero, which despite my current feelings of entrapment, is a form of freedom which I believe is paramount to a happy lifestyle and escape from modern enslavement.
Now, however, it might not even be possible to get a decent loan should I need one to purchase a new vehicle (mine's getting pretty run down after almost a decade of constant use, and it's an american car), or more importantly, to pay for furthering my education to receive a more prestigious degree than the one I'll be getting soon (I was thinking maybe a BA from Massart or something). These goals are really only intermediary things which I'd hope would give me access to opportunities to find a career path which makes me happy, learn how to live with other people, and give myself the financial security I need to return to my younger days when I had the freedom to explore all the opportunities given to me (and in the process, finish a lot of unfinished projects I began so many years ago).
As the time draws near to take the next step towards those ends, the path seems unclear. I'm not sure what's the first thing I should do next, or what I should explore. I'm afraid of taking unnecessary risks, since my financial security would be at stake. I don't want to potentially lock away my freedom and resign myself to any of those things, be it a shitty job, being stuck at home, not being able to finish my education or my projects, or anything like that.
I want to be able to be creative again.
Thanks for listening. :x

elecman mashup mix by coda
General | Posted 17 years agohello! I thought since some of you guys enjoy mashups, you might enjoy one my friend coda did a while ago. Since I didn't have any part in making the thing (other than requesting a song to be smashed in!), I really have no business uploading the song to FA. However, I would like to give a plug for the tune in my journal because it's flippin' sweeeeeet xD

Journey - Faithfully
REM - All The Right Friends

"Blow-up" / "Las Babas del Diablo" transcribed...
General | Posted 17 years agoI re-formatted the English translation of a well-known story by Julio Cortázar known as "Blow-up" and put it up on everything2 for you all to read. This is a story I highly recommend. It is about a photographer who while developing a picture he took discovers something by accident while blowing it up that was extremely disturbing; enough to give him some mental trauma. It's not a long story, so check it out!

En español, usted puede leer "Las Babas del Diablo" en línea buscando a Google. Lo debe estar allí.
Haha, sorry, just practicing my spanish, I know it sucks... x_x

computer problems fixed (I think)...
General | Posted 17 years agoHey all,
I finally fixed most of my computer problems, and without having to spend loads of money, wooo. After narrowing the problem down to the sound card drivers, I reinstalled them and Data Execution Prevention magically went away. The sound was still not coming out of one of the speakers and couldn't figure it out why until I checked a forum and they said it had something to do with jumpers 9/10 on pinout JAUD1 on the motherboard regarding front panel audio. I remembered recently using front panel audio, so I stuck some headphones in there and wiggled it around a bit, and LO AND BEHOLD THE SOUND STARTED WORKING AGAIN. What a shitty case with a shitty front audio jack, it wasn't detecting right :V
Also FWIW, the $8 ethernet card I bought to replace my IC one was completely unnecessary, and seems to have also magically fixed itself. The external device never worked in this machine for some reason. Wish I kept the reciept. Oh well. I'll probably unload it on someone should they want it (you gotta pay shipping though!)
As for my ear................ It's somewhat better after a couple of hot showers, but it's still not hearing as well as my right ear. If it doesn't go back to normal tomorrow, I'll probably try the peroxide and alcohol chaser thing. Sorry dudes, I'd love to go to the ENT doctor, but I don't have health insurance and can't afford it. Go Obama go, where's my Medicaid? >:V

hearing problems / computer problems
General | Posted 17 years agoEver since the last day of my cold ended earlier this week, I woke up with a feeling like there's cotton in my ear, and so far I haven't been able to get it out. It's been about 3-4 days and I am still not able to hear very well out of my left ear (which btw, has always been a problematic ear for me).
I am somewhat concerned, but not too concerned as of yet. I've been trying to change the pressure on my eardrum to see if it's just because my sinuses are clogged, and I think this may be the case. I'm not sure, however.....
That being said, it's not like it's a huge deal right now, None of the songs I've made recently are in stereo 8)
On a semi-related note, my windows partition's been having assloads of problems, one of which being that my 4.1 audio is being demuxed to stereo for whatever reason I can't explain (It even does this in the channel test control panel!). I'm trying to figure out what to do, hopefully I won't have to re-install the drivers, since RealTek's a PITA to get "just right" and uninstalling it will make all my defaults switch to my USB headset (which would be a disaster)..... :T
On top of that problem, I'm also having Windows's Data Execution Prevention shutting parts of the OS down for no discernible reason (service host svchost) -- No, I'm not running any "weird" services :T
And finally, Ubuntu 8.10, if you have a modern machine, is a very very cool distro to try out. Multiple displays finally WORKS and the new glx driver from nvidia kicks ass. My only gripe is that I can't boot into it anymore cause bluetooth gets stuck in an infinite loop during init (is this a known bug?) 8|
Well, hopefully I can solve most of these issues x_x

What happened to Lucky Strike?
General | Posted 17 years agoAnyone ever heard of Lucky Strike cigarettes? You might have seen them in world war 2 movies or Cowboy Bebop. They are known as a quintessential American brand, but they are almost never seen in the US anymore. So, what happened to them? They are well-known outside the US. Me and
garu are interested in knowing !
P.S. he also says "nya" and "good luck with the elections" 8)
Edit: I heard one of the reasons it may not be well known in the US anymore is because they are unfiltered cigarettes, which is extremely unhealthy, even compared to other cigarettes (which we all know are unhealthy to begin with)...

Don't forget to vote on Tuesday
General | Posted 17 years agoNobu's voting tips:
Make sure you get to the polling place early. Your workplace is supposed to let you go early to vote on election day, up to 2 hours early in some places, so make good use of that time.
If you are a college student, you have the right to vote at your campus polling place; you don't have to go all the way back home to vote.
Try to avoid getting stuck with a provisional ballot; sometimes they just get tossed in the trash, and usually they're not counted (they're only counted as tie breaking votes).
Make sure you check the print out and verify the machine counted who you voted for accurately before casting the ballot.
Bring your driver's license, and it wouldn't hurt to bring your voter registration card, too. Some states will give you a hard time, so having these ready will make it more likely you won't get stuck with a provisional ballot.
If you are in California, vote NO on Prop 8.
If you are in Illinois, vote NO on the constitutional convention.
If you are in Maricopa County, for the love of god vote AGAINST Arpaio for Sheriff.
If you are in Alaska, vote AGAINST Ted Stevens.
Nobu endorsements:
President: Barack Obama (D-IL)
US Senate: Dick Durbin (D-IL)
US Representative, IL District 14: Bill Foster (D-IL)

PROTECT act gets its legal test
General | Posted 17 years agoI guess we'll find out once again that congress's latest attempt to ban artwork is unconstitutionally broad:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=18412
The last thing they tried to make it constitutional was to apply the Miller obscenity test to artwork in order to put it in its own "category", the same kind that governs obscene pornography. However, by definition, pretty much anything drawn with a pencil to paper has legal "artistic value" and thus either the courts will most likely rule that the comic books did not pass Miller or that PROTECT is unconstitutional.
CBLDF should be familiar to any of you in a certain artist's guild.

New flash loop TONGSQUAZ
General | Posted 17 years agoI took some clips from Yellow Magic Orchestra's classic video Tong Poo, mashed it up with monsquaz.swf and gave señor monsquaz a retro hair-do! What more could you ask for?
http://nobuyuki.gpknow.com/flash/tongsquaz.swf
You have to copy and paste the link or else it will appear as 404, please don't inform me of this, I already know!

I made a music video last night.....
General | Posted 17 years agoit would be cool if you would give it a listen for me, because I think the song is very awesome. Originally, I was going to do most of the scenes in reverse, but I scrapped that idea, so only the very first scene is. Please enjoy :3

edit: I probably should also give a special thanks shout out to
nightfox who I might have forgotten was the one who originally sent me this song >_<

General | Posted 17 years agoLike many other artists that have come and gone,
-n- has packed up and disappeared from FA without a trace. He was probably imho one of if not the best musicians on FA. Good thing I saved everything he uploaded before he left, but he didn't even leave a link to his website, so I have no clue where to get his new tunes now.
For those of you who may remember him for his art rather than his music, he did muscle kemono. Perhaps someone knows where to get his new music....

Wacky political candidate in Japan... no wait, America!
General | Posted 17 years agoHey guys, remember that crazy Japanese anarchist political candidate I covered last year that the government tried to take down off the internet cause he was getting tons of traction from 2ch? Well, now he's back, and apparently he wants to run for president of the united states!
Yes, now he seems like a bit of a self-parody, but in case you missed it last year, this dude was actually given airtime on television to run for governor of Tokyo. He ran afoul of election rules when he used Youtube to expose his allotted time to more viewers online and "go viral", and that's when the Japanese government started trying to take down the video wherever it got posted.
As it's now a matter of historical curiosity, (and since my old journal has a link to one of the removed videos,) you can see his last political shennanigans Here. I recommend you watch it to get an idea who this guy is BEFORE you watch the new video, which is much more absurd and insane. In 2007 this guy was an actual legitimate candidate for public office in Japan.
After you've watched the old video, here's the new one 8)
