drug free yeah okay
Posted 14 years agoexcuse me while i rant a little here. as someone whose speech and (lack of) fashion patterns has got them labeled (incorrectly) for many years as a stoner, i have a bit of a bone to pick with something i've been seeing on FA.
i've noticed a kind of smarmy arrogance smeared all over the drug-free furs page. i don't think it's intentional, but it's there. that kind of "if you want to destroy your life fine with us ^_^_^_^^" feeling. and i sort of feel like i ought to say something about it.
do you drink coffee? you do drugs.
do you drink alcohol? you do drugs.
do you drink tea? energy drinks? also drugs.
hey, ever take a painkiller? high-ho-drugsyo.
need ADHD meds? anti depression meds? seriously.
someone out there is going to argue that caffiene/energy drinks aren't like "real" drugs. i'm here to tell you that's bullshit. caffiene is crazy addictive. it stomps all over your liver and your guts. if you take enough of it, you will hallucinate. i have hallucinated due to caffiene. if you take too much of it, you can OD and possibly die. my squeaky clean christian grad student buddy OD'd on caffiene and needed to be hospitalised.
is it about getting a high? is that what it is? drugs that make you high are bad? well, when i was in school overseas in japan i was given a medical cocktail that i had to take every day to fix a sore throat that left me positively loopy. does that make me a bad person? are people who lean towards nyquil when they get minor sicky symptoms bad?
trying to take a moral high ground about drugs is such a god damn slippery slope. everything is such a sloppy grey area, where the laws of individual states and countries don't even agree on what's "bad" and what isn't. unless you're 100% hardcore straight edge, you really can't even attempt to take a holier-than-thou stance. there's so many moral potholes and quandries, how can you even begin to justify to yourself the thought of "well i'm superior to ____ because *i* don't do drugs, and *they* do." do you know their individual situation? their history? do you know they're not PRESCRIBED the very drug you're smarming at them over? or, even if they're not prescribed, how do you know they didn't have a medical reason for it regardless? federal laws may say one thing and local laws say another. or someone may get an out of state prescription. sometimes these drugs are the only thing between people starving after chemo and being able to eat a normal lunch. acting like a condascending jerk to them because of their medical needs? not cool.
why do i feel like i can mouth off about this? i tried to go 100% hardcore straightedge for a year. i cut out caffiene, booze, tylonal, everything. and you know where it got me? in the ER with a 106f fever on a saline drip with a morphine additive. it's not easy. it's actually pretty goddamn dangerous.
really the only sane stance to take on it is this:
as long as what you're doing doesn't hurt the people around you emotionally or physically, who cares what you do.
and really, smarming all over other people? isn't winning anyone over to your side.
i mean just by virtue of their general civility, i'd much rather hang out with people from the pro-cannabis furs group than the drugs free furs. and i don't think that's the ultimate goal the drugs free furs were going for. :\
i'm not trying to decry being drug free. many people are, and they're really very cool and nice folks. i'm not trying to decry drug use either. many people use drugs who are also very cool and nice folks. but what i AM trying to decry is that people willfully ally themselves under a banner whose mouthpiece is NOT a cool or nice person and really is just looking for a reason to kick around folks who make different life choices than they do.
so just you know. think twice before putting a banner on your page that leads back to a bunch of nasty jerkwads talking about how great they are and how the "drugged lifestyle" is full of "haters."
also you know maybe. talk to a few people who actually do drugs before you formulate stereotypical opinions. i'm not saying talk to them about drugs (though it may shock you to learn they're not going to PRESSURE YOUUUUU into trying them too) but just talk to them like you would any other normal person. you know. before you judge them.

i promised to help my dad work on his website today, and think about it this way. if i'm going to be 30 on saturday, how old do you think my dad is? how much do you think he knows about maintaining a website?

if i have spare time today it'll be spent sketching inhuman and prepping the house just in case my father-in-law swings by this weekend. there's the slimmest chance of it occuring. so yeah probably not much art today.
two days til my birthday aaaaa

frostbite
Posted 14 years agoso i typically wear some pretty thick socks indoors this time of year. i keep my feet dry. i don't go in the snow at all if i can avoid it. i wear some big, warm, dry boots when i do have to go out in snow.
never the less
indoors, in a heated house, i got mild frostbite on some of my toes.
i am pretty sure i'd die of exposure if i went outside for more than like 15 minutes and it's not even 'that cold' by new england standards.

Posted 14 years agookay, it's towards the end of the month. i've been under the impression that this sort of marks the kick-off of the convention year. having never really been on the furry con circuit i could be entirely wrong. however...
i feel like trying my hand at badges. badges would be:
-coloured (deleter and copic markers)
-full body OR bust shot (your choice)
-laminated
-20$
if you're interested, shoot me a note. since this is my first batch of badges the price is going to be 20$. if this winds up being a regular thing i may raise the price. i haven't decided yet.
i'm also open for regular character commissions and stuff, if you click yon link down there. i still need to raise my end of the mortgage for the month.

the RAM switch seemed to help
Posted 14 years agookay, so the computer's been running two-threedayish on this 512 RAM with no freezes.
it had some serious lagtime when i booted up photoshop, but again. that's expected when you're running on like half the memory you previously had. also, that exceptionally finnicky weird wirrrrring noise has gone. i've never known RAM to make noise, but maybe it was something stupid like the stick was only half-in and vibrating?
either way if the laptop makes it to thursday without crashing, i'll start scouring newegg for new RAM. i can't go about 4gigs because i'm running XP pro and its brain can't concieve of a number bigger than 3.5 :O hopefully this will make it easier for me to find RAM. or cheaper.
we're really trying to save money wth the house right now. our oil tank is almost empty, so we put the heat down to 49 and busted out the space heaters. it is so viciously cold. i had to wear gloves to work on the last comic page towards the end there. the cat is fine - she knows how to climb under blankets. the rat is also fine - threw her an old shirt and she made herself a warm little nest in the corner of her cage.

computer issues continue

anyway.
so those who've been following my exploits elsewhere already know my laptop's been having some...issues. namely every so often, for no apparent reason, it just freezes and refuses to unfreeze. it's 4+ years old, australian, and has travelled a LOT.
i already replaced the HD, which didn't seem to help much. it ran fine for a day or so and then froze again. most of the time, the freezing takes place at night - when it's shut, not in use, but still running. so i thought it was perhaps when the drives went into power saving mode.
but it also sometimes freezes when i'm using it during the day at random intervals. i'd say it freezes about twice a day, on average. the time between the freezes varies. there's no one particular program it freezes up on/after.
so if it's not the HD, it must be either the mobo or the memory. if it's the mobo (motherboard, for you non computery types) then i'm just fucked and need a new computer. i doubt i'll be able to afford one so i'll probably just be without any way to get art online for an indeterminate time.
if it's the memory, which i hope it is, i can just buy new memory and replace it.
so now i'm testing the memory. i've swapped the old stick (a 2gig) out for some old smaller sticks (512mb) and am just seeing how it goes. it runs slower now but that's expected. if it manages to go about three days without a freeze, i'll try to raise some money at the tail end of this month to purchase new RAM.

weighing the odds on furry fiesta
Posted 14 years agoi'm trying to decide if i can go or not.
it'll cost like 200$ per person (alf wants to come to) to get down there and back, as well as in. and that doesn't count food.
my current feelings are if i can make what i need for the month (which is something i'm not sure if i can do or not) and then start making extra, i can go.
home bills take priority first, though. i have electric, phone and mortgage still to worry about plus my monthly credit card payment. so. we'll see.
i dunno, hope i can make it. i haven't been to a con in a long, long time. and never been to a furry con :B

how not to ask for art
Posted 14 years agookay this is just your standard "i'm an artist and this shit is annoying" journal.
so i posted that silly picture of me and
fivel the other day, right? i didn't tell lisa i was gonna draw it, and it's not even meant to be "payment" for netflix in any way. i just like lisa, she's my friend, and it seemed like a fun little one-shot thing to draw at 8am while i was watching masque of the red death on netflix.
seriously. that's about all the thought that went into it.
but sure enough, shortly after i post it i get an IM from some dude.
this dude has been following the comic for years but has always (always) attempted to weasel free art out of me. i mean whatever, everyone likes free art, but we're talking six years of every conversation with this guy boiling down to "so you gonna draw for me wink wink?"
i'm not a dick, but i am possibly an idiot because i keep giving this guy the benefit of the doubt. so rather than close the box as soon as i see him say "hi!" i actually respond. this time our convo went a little something like this:
"hey so i have netflix too" he says
here i'm thinking oh maybe he's going to offer some movie recs or something. yeah right.
"so you can use mine next time" he continues.
uh
what? why would i jump from different peoples' netflix accounts? that's just dumb. i tried explaining there was no point, since i was already using lisa's and all that. also i know lisa will laugh when she sees my assorted movie selections scrolling across her "recently watched" and i'm NOT so sure about this guy.
"oh well if she loses it you can use mine."
thanks buddy but i think it's far more likely that if lisa couldn't afford it for a month, those who use it (me and some of her other friends) could pony up a few bucks to keep it in service.
the implication of all of this was p clear.

Posted 14 years agookay so MOST everything moved over seemlessly. i'm not sure if gin's got the admin area of sunyshore working yet or not, but again. anyone good with zencart willing to help, send me a note and i can point you towards her.
for a while there e-mail broke but it turned out that all it was was haxar had to turn the e-mail port on on the server. PHEW! so all of my e-mails work again for those curious.
the inhuman wiki is still only semi-functional, and the subdomain doesn't work right now because of that. the issue there is that i exported the old mediawiki database and just imported it onto a fresh install of mediawiki. the text is all there - but the templates and images all broke.
it's something i'll probably do eventually but is time consuming and stupid. WASTING MY TIIIIIIME
speaking of time, it's almost my birthday :B well by almost i mean at the end of the month. i'm gonna be 30 which is pretty far out to me :O i guess that means i can yell at kids to get off my lawn and disbelieve that killer klowns from outer space are attacking at any given time.

for a while there e-mail broke but it turned out that all it was was haxar had to turn the e-mail port on on the server. PHEW! so all of my e-mails work again for those curious.
the inhuman wiki is still only semi-functional, and the subdomain doesn't work right now because of that. the issue there is that i exported the old mediawiki database and just imported it onto a fresh install of mediawiki. the text is all there - but the templates and images all broke.
it's something i'll probably do eventually but is time consuming and stupid. WASTING MY TIIIIIIME
speaking of time, it's almost my birthday :B well by almost i mean at the end of the month. i'm gonna be 30 which is pretty far out to me :O i guess that means i can yell at kids to get off my lawn and disbelieve that killer klowns from outer space are attacking at any given time.
that said all i really want is inhuman fanart/fics/fanstuff in general. pitchow!

and i can say it now - they've changed. they used to be good. they used to send out monthly newsletters with updates. tech support (up until about a year ago) would bend over backwards to help you. you needed something installed and it didn't go right? they'd hold your hand and walk you through it.
now they don't give a damn.
i suspect the real cause here is that with the mass exodus from godaddy, dreamhost got a LOT of inbound new customers. with this influx of new money, old accounts got the back burner. the shared servers got crammed full to overload. old accounts were told it was there fault and to buy a VPS, and dreamhost banked on their previous dialogue with those customers to be believed.
the way it used to be run, i'd have expected them to run out and buy new servers to accomodate their overload. not this. but to prove my point, they just had an enormous downtime across their whole network yesterday. hi ho overloady-o.
anyway, it appears the migration to haxar's server went off with only minor hitches. there's a little bit of an issue with sunyshore's cart admin interface that i'm sure can be cleared up. i think the wiki is still broken, but we might tackle that today. it really depends on haxar's free time, and since the body of things are operable at the moment there's no extreme rush.
the next big steps are
1- getting dreamhost to give me a refund. half will go to gin, half goes right back into the college loans fund.
2- working with
wolfwings to create the new code for inhuman's site!

i'm currently in the process of shopping around for different hosts. with 9 domain names, 3 people, a board, a zencart, 400+ comic pages etc to haul with me it's a bit of a considerable move to make. we need at least 70gb of bandwith per month (the more the better) and at least 20gb of space (again, more is better) and i wish i knew what we needed in terms of memory, but dreamhost is very sly about keeping that out of the eye of the consumer.
i'm also writing to dreamhost in an attempt to get at least a partial refund. i JUST (with the help of you guys buying art) purchased hosting for the next TWO YEARS with them, and now this horsehockey begins. i want that money back so i can take it wherever i wind up moving to.

the standard would be 3 panels per page, at 30$ per page. limit 3 pages, unless it's a special project. prices would go up from there.
if you have just a theme in mind or a script i can work with you on it. or if you have a bigger project, that could work too.
would anyone be interested in this? they would probably be in the style of unintentional mishaps (quasi-cutesy characters, flat-ish colour)

Posted 14 years agothough to be honest i'm beginning to get kind of a sinking, sick, angry feeling. it's seeming an awful lot now like what he was doing was waiting by the computer to see what my reaction would be, and that he was "testing" me. please remember i'm essentially a stranger to this person. to do this to a stranger is extremely cruel, fucked up, and sick.
as a result of that, if it was the actual intent or not, the foot-long catfish died last night. i was supposed to transition it to a larger tank and out of the bucket. it was living when i went to bed. it was dead when i went down this morning.
i'm just rather mad all over, really. the fish was dumped on me by someone irresponsible who didn't care what happened to it and then had the audacity to e-mail me later telling me to take care of it and what its name was. derpy's actions were dumped on me, and now it seems they were just an attention ploy.
i suppose the word for how i feel today is just 'disgusted.'

Posted 14 years agoi normally wouldn't do this, but a fan of the comic just sent me a suicide note. they've told me not to tell anyone, but i'm not a douche.
i don't know anything about this guy. i don't have his address. i don't have his phone number. if you do, please PLEASE contact the authorities. PLEASE call him. i've e-mailed him back saying not to do it and to please come talk to me, but that's all i can do.
i apologise for passing this on to FA, but the guy honestly needs help that me being across the country and only an artist he knows can't provide. i can't get there fast enough or get anyone who can help there fast enough. if you can, please do something. or at least hold him in your thoughts.

Posted 14 years agowell not willed. more like had it dumped on me. it used to be my stepfather's, but he's apparently sick of it.
the thing is ten years old and somewhere between 9-12 inches long. its species is a Featherfin Squeaker. he sent a tank...but the tank is filthy, covered in dust, and in pieces in the basement.
i tried to rehome the fish through a giant fish forum, but the person who said he'd take it flaked out last minute several times in a row and everyone else wanted us to drive it all over creation to their homes for no compensation.
so it looks like i'll be keeping it?
currently it's dwelling in a bucket by the kitchen radiator. i've bought some aquarium sand and a large filter, and tomorrow will set about Deep Cleaning the tank it came with.

gynnyr swung by and hung out. they're moving down to maryland in a few days so this is like our first/last chance to see them for a while.
it was fun times. we got chinese, watched new beavis & butthead and generally just laughed it up. apparently gynnyr was really sleep deprived, cause he found the voice we use for ren really way too funny and the otamatone brought him to tears with laughter and joy. it was p. great
when it was time to go gyn drove his car straight up onto a big boulder that borders our driveway.
then off of the boulder, where he got stuck.
so we all had to push his car back onto the driveway, and hopefully it didn't like explode on their way home.
but it wouldn't have been a visit from gyn if if didn't involve some kind of completely rediculous near-disasterous adventure. god damn those two are great :,> ty guys
