Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated
Posted a year agoI realized I hadn't written a journal here in four years even though I have kept my gallery updated in intermittent chunks. A lot has happened! We had a pandemic! I got top surgery! We went back to cons again! Last year in early autumn, I developed a cervical spine injury that didn't get properly diagnosed until January! Holy hell. That last one there is why my gallery here hasn't been updated since September. I've talked some about what happened as it was developing, and again once I'd started making progress in physical therapy; suffice it to say the whole thing was incredibly painful and debilitating, and while I have started to feel like myself again, the emotional recovery from such an experience doesn't necessarily happen at the same rate as the physical recovery. However, I am still here! And that is something!
► What's next?
As my ability to work was severely affected during the worst of my injury, I'm getting back on track now with my project schedule, personal goals, gallery updates, and convention planning. I'll be updating my FA gallery later today and responding to some comments I received over the last while. Next up, you can find me at FURNAL EQUINOX March 15th-17th (so this coming weekend as of writing), where I'll be splitting a table with
catmonkshiro at J2. I'll be open for commissions there for the first time since last summer. My next planned con after that is Anthrocon, where I continue as staff making the Friends standees and other signage and graphics as needed. In between, I'm hoping to bring back some shop favorites that have needed reruns for a long time and introduce some cool new stuff, too! 🐛 Lots to do!!
► Help make the magic happen!
I'd be lying if I said the past half a year hasn't been incredibly difficult, and the support I received from my patrons has been stupendously helpful and encouraging. I retooled my tier system for the first time since I first launched in 2016 and now have more reward options, including a tier where you get to vote on some of the things I'll make next and a limited tier where you can get a sketch request from me every month. Please check it out if you haven't in a while or weren't aware I had one! I try not to be too annoying about it, but I absolutely appreciate everyone who decides to fund some of their favorite artists existing in one way or another. Even a tiny pledge makes a difference in creating stable ground for creators to work from.
Thanks for your attention for a bit! I hope you've all been keeping well and enjoying what I've been posting since I last had much to say. Maybe we'll run into each other at a con sometime. Until then, back to the drawing board for me!

NEWS! Nominated for Ursa Major & Bug Updates
Posted 5 years agoIt's been a little while! Here's what's up!!
► Ursa Major Award Nominations!
I'm stunned and delighted to announce that TWO of my works from 2019 have been nominated in the "Best Published Illustration" category! These are community-voted fan-driven awards, so make sure to have your say - voting is open NOW! You can see the nominees in each category and proceed to cast your own ballot here: https://ursamajorawards.org/voting2019/ While I'd love it if you consider my work for the prize, please take your time and give all contenders thought to decide which you truly think is best. Thank you to all who participate!!
► Telegram News Channel
If you haven't heard, I now have a Telegram news channel - no chat, no fuss, just alerts pertaining to my art including new merch & designs, convention appearances, and commission openings. It's https://t.me/mothmonarchnews - easy breezy.
► Biggest Little Furcon Badge Art
BLFC hired me earlier this year to create one of their registration badge art options! "Vespa Futura" is the resulting piece; I submitted a version formatted for the badge to BLFC but also just finished a print version with additional detail that would've been obscured by the badge format, which I posted here today! Attendees can select this art for their badge during pre-registration, or modify an existing registration in their account to choose it before the convention.
► Blast Radius: New Game+ by Pepper Coyote
I've been working with Pepper to create the cover art and do layout/design for his new album, which is a re-release and re-recording of the original Blast Radius album from 2015 with new songs and soon to be available in several formats! His Kickstarter for it wrapped up at the end of January, but you can still take a look there for more info on the project. At least on the design end, almost everything is just about ready to go, so I'm excited to see how it all turns out by the anticipated completion this summer.
That's most of what's up at the moment! My next convention is Furnal Equinox, after which I'll be both preparing for BLFC and hunkering down into my Anthrocon work for the year. It's been stressful but also very satisfying keeping so busy. Back to the drawing board!

A Note on Respecting Each Other
Posted 6 years agoA message from
catmonkshiro and I -
We've been trying to work out how best to talk about a certain issue for a while now. It's tough to get into because Shiro and I always want people to feel welcome to talk to us and be friendly and to engage with our art, but sometimes we need to draw boundaries for our own health and well-being. While we were away, we decided to sit down and figure out how to open up about it; we hope you understand we say the following with appreciation and care for our audience in mind.
We want the streams and our general communities to be positive, supportive environments. Sometimes people have had a rough day or might need to vent a little; we welcome you to enjoy our art and each others' company to lighten the mood or take a moment away from your troubles. That being said, please remember the stream is our workplace, and we are trying to focus and create the art that ultimately keeps us fed and clothed – you are peeking into our offices, and we ask you to respect the space in that way. To address the issue directly: we are artists, not therapists, and the chat is not group therapy. We are not trained or qualified to assist with serious or in-depth long-term problems. Taking over the chat for extended periods with heavy complaints, derailing conversation regularly with blunt negativity, or sending us private notes with extensive detail on personal issues expects us and our audience to fulfill a role for you that we cannot safely fill. It is deeply uncomfortable and inappropriate, and it does not show respect for our boundaries or allow us to best maintain our own mental health. It essentially demands we drop what we are doing, take time away from working for our clients or from needed breaks, and try to come up with solutions for difficulties we are not professionally trained to address. We've had conversations as a fandom that hiring an artist does not automatically buy you their friendship, and this falls along similar lines.
We do want to be helpful, understanding, and supportive. Unfortunately, we are often powerless to offer any meaningful help in serious situations, which has only aggravated folks in the past who expected something of us we are not trained or equipped to provide and found our efforts to respond wanting. We decided to talk about this at the end of our vacation after we have had some time away from streaming so it is clear we are not targeting one person or referring to one incident. We absolutely don't mean to say that problems or negative things can never be discussed at all; we just ask that difficult topics are broached with discretion and respect for all involved in the conversation. Thank you.

Anthro New England & Furnal Equinox!! YCH Collab and MORE
Posted 6 years agoIt's been too long so TIME FOR AN EDITION OF THE BUG KING NEWS:
► Anthro New England!
I'll be at ANE in just over a week! Come find me at Table 13 in the Dealer's room. I haven't been to Boston or this con for several years and am really excited to be back! Hope to see some of you there & enjoy some heckin' good chowder while I'm at it.
► Furnal Equinox!
If you haven't heard (and a lot of you haven't, it seems), I am a guest of honor at Furnal Equinox 2019! I'm delighted to be one of the featured guests this year as an artist long-involved in furry fandom but relatively new to the Toronto community. I'm gonna be doing a whole bunch of stuff at this con, including but not limited to:
· A double spread of my art & merch in the Dealer's Den!
· Several panels of work in the Art Show!
· A panel on how to get out of your own way and Make Stuff, currently scheduled for Friday evening!
I worked very hard on a number of art assets for Furnal Equinox, including all levels of registration badges and the con shirts, so you'll be seeing my work around a lot! Please come by and see me. I may be a guest, but I'm there to have a great time with you & contribute to the memories and fun for everyone!
!! Furnal Equinox YCH! !!
I'm collaborating with the fantastic Okami Kemono (
o-kemono) to create a great group YCH in theme for Furnal Equinox! Take a look at O-kemono's post here & hurry - some slots are already gone, but there are still several available if you want in! Anyone who autobuys their slot will be able to pick up a complimentary print of the final image at my table at Furnal Equinox!
With all that said, time for me to get back to drawing & design! There's lots to do as always. Commissions are full for now, but I'll be open again at & after Furnal Equinox.
P.S. Have you seen my mini-directory website about my work? Check it out at mothmonar.ch!

Time to Go!
Posted 7 years agoJust a heads-up that I'm going to be moving within the next few days. I'm finishing preparations now, and soon we'll be on the way! I'll be resuming work on post-Anthrocon projects as soon as possible, and then getting to the post-move queue as expected - while I will need a bit of time to settle in, it shouldn't be too long a wait! Thanks so much for understanding!
AC's coming up + Starting A Queue/Waitlist
Posted 7 years agoAnthrocon is in about a month, and hoo boy do I have a ton in store for folks there this year. The Friends of Anthrocon will be returning along with a few new surprises - and I got stories about those, let me tell you. Find me at the con. (You can bring me a coffee if you like.) I'll have a table at C20 full of all the latest buggy and furry merch and artwork along with continuing favorites, and I'll also have several panels of original works and special prints the art show! And I will be alongside the fabulous
1coin presenting the Friday night bug panel this year! In addition, I might have art somewhere even outside the convention... more on that when it's confirmed. COME TO PITTSBURGH, JOIN THE PARTY! I'll even be at a dance or two when time permits. I may go to work, but the spirit moves me to dance.
Moving & The Queue
Now, as some of you know, I am moving this summer. I'm finally moving to Canada! This will require some time before and after to pack, unpack, set up the work station again - you get the idea. I don't want to overestimate when my availability for commissions will resume or promise people things I can't deliver. Even so, I've had many inquiries for projects, and a lot of you have told me you're willing to wait. So I have a plan.
Instead of my usual method of scheduling projects on specific days on a calendar, I'm going to start a waitlist. If there's a project you'd like to get from me after the move, you can let me know, and I'll gladly put you on the queue. There'll be no need to pay anything until your project is coming up next. I can generally estimate that commissions may resume late August/early September, but that may wiggle around a bit depending on how smoothly things go. I'll do my best to keep everybody posted. Once my schedule situation is sorted out and I've got my footing again, I'll mostly likely cease using the queue and return to scheduled projects (after everyone on the queue is taken care of, of course). Thanks for understanding!!

Post-FE & Spring Shop Sale & April Comms!
Posted 7 years agoAnother one of these multi-purpose journals, yeah? Here's the skinny on the latest in Bug Town!
Furnal Equinox
I had a lovely weekend in Toronto with many, many friends and got to draw some cool art for folks! I was greeted with a surprise early on:
hbruton got me a "Welcome to Canada" cake since word has got out I was finally granted my PR confirmation! Another one of the highlights for me was definitely pulling a prank on
kagemushi and
tienlong. I'd been messaging each before the convention to help me surprise the other one, but of course neither knew they were being double-crossed. Their reactions were great, and it provided some entertainment for folks at the Charity Show! Here's a video of that part of the show, and here are the links to the two pieces that were presented. Whatever shenanigans will I get up to next...?
FE 2018 was also the first con where I was legitimately excited for Closing Ceremonies - not that I wanted the con to end (they always do too soon), but a secret I'd been keeping for a little while was revealed there! I will be a Guest of Honor at Furnal Equinox 2019! I'm super looking forward to making neat stuff for the con and helping create an awesome, fun experience for next year's attendees. Join us in Toronto!
✨ Shop Sale! ✨
We're having a spring sale in the shop through Friday! All orders are 10% off with code "LADYBUGS" and include a small bonus item! Orders over $20 will additionally include a selected "seconds" pin. Click for more info & pictures here, or just go straight to the shop right here. "Bee Yourself" pins have recently restocked along with brand-new "Yin Yang Cats" pins, and we've got loads of other pins, stickers, bandanas, etc. all ready to ship out to you! GO GET BUGS!
New Commission Type: Classy Commissions
I had a number of inquiries after folks saw the new Kage & Tien pieces for traditional commissions in that vein. Well, we're doing it! I am taking a very limited number of "Classy Commissions" for completion in April/early May. You can get all the information here. Regular commissions are also ongoing. The next round of Elementals will probably be in the late spring or summer. Get in touch with any questions!
Other Notes
I'm working on a new mini-website that will contain all my links to art stuff, shops, info, resources etc. I've made! I've tried to connect everything in the past but I think this will really go a long way to help folks find everything I'm up to since I have stuff scattered across the internet. Stay tuned! I got a really cool URL for it: mothmonar.ch (Right now it just goes to my FA here, but I'll be redirecting it to the site when it's ready.)
Other Notes
Next cons are BLFC and AC! I would love to make it to Canfurence as well but unfortunately already have a family obligation that weekend. After that, we'll see until MFF. I'm going to be trying for Dealer at MFF again; fingers crossed!
That's all for now! Hope you've been doing alright and have liked my recent work and ideas. I got more coming up soon! Stay buggy!

Kickin' into gear! Commissions & shop open for 2018!
Posted 7 years agoYou read that title right! Now that I'm back from FC, commission bookings are now available for February and beyond! My prices are all up-to-date in the commission tab (I'll be updating the examples a bit too, but the info should all be the same). Some have changed because I've had to reevaluate my work/life balance for my future health & well-being, but I've done my best to keep things reasonable and fair for the quality of my work. As always, anyone with an existing booking will have their project completed at the originally agreed price - that's only fair! Feel free to send a note or email if there's something I can do for you! If you've been in touch about scheduling something for this year already, I'll get back to you shortly.
The shop is also back open as of today! GO GET BUGS at MaryCapaldi.com/shop! Inventory has been updated post-con, so some items are in short supply; nevertheless, I've got a wide variety of bugdanas, stickers, enamel pins, washi tape, prints and more! I'm hoping to add new pin designs this year, a couple new bandanas, and some new products such as patches, too! Stay tuned!
FC was a fun con, and I got to draw a few neat badges for folks - thanks a lot! I also drew the Fox & Pepper After Dark show again by Fox's request. I've been having fun drawing shows, and the performers always enjoy seeing the results, though I have to be a bit choosy about how often I do it as it can cut into time for paid work. Tips and patrons help with that, but I do understand not everyone can or wishes to tip. I had a few very sweet tips sent to me for my birthday last month, which helped me purchase a new monitor on sale for my workstation! I'm looking forward to creating a lot of cool stuff this year to make folks happy.
My cons upcoming for this year so far are:
- Furnal Equinox (95% sure I'm going atm)
- BLFC (dealer!)
- Anthrocon (dealer, planning for art show, also still staff there is no escape)
- MFF (no idea this far out what the plan is)
I'm purposefully leaving the autumn open because I'm probably going to have to move then. More on that later. It's good, don't worry.
That's all I got at the moment! Hope to see you, hear from you, maybe even work with you in the near future online or at a con! Stay buggy!

Stay buggy!
Flying Too Close to the Sun
Posted 7 years agoSo, 2017 was quite the year. I did a bunch of conventions, met and drew for many fabulous folks, created more standees for Anthrocon, came out with lots of new bug merch, and had many more creative adventures. I'm grateful for every new watcher, every commissioner, every customer in my shop, and every Patron or Ko-fi tipper along the way. I can't do all that I do without this amazing community of you who believe in me and my work. I can't express enough how thankful I am for your support in every way, especially before I need to discuss something a little difficult and a little personal.
You could easily say that in pursuit of doing as much work and making as much art as possible in the last few years, I was burning the candle at both ends. Maybe in the middle, too. I very often cut my sleep short, skipped weekends to get more done, and drank an absolute excess of coffee to stay alert at my tablet longer. This has been my approach to productivity for several years now. For a while, it worked, allowing me to draw long hours for a few weeks at a time before I'd crash and sleep for an entire day, then rinse and repeat. I pushed myself to my limits constantly out of a sense of dedication and desire to somehow "deserve" being able to do art for a living if I worked hard enough. (There's still plenty of sentiment out there that art isn't real work, and artists deal with it in various ways.) I knew I could permanently injure my wrist or arm, so I did stretches and focused on non-drawing work when my body needed to rest. But I didn't know there were other ways to harm myself doing this... and that came back to bite me.
In October, I began having stomach pain that wouldn't go away. It started fairly mild but increased in severity over the course of more than two weeks until I finally saw a doctor. Based on my symptoms, I was told I'd developed gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) and needed to be on a two-month course of medication. The doctor felt it was likely caused by the amount of coffee I was drinking as well as the lack of sleep and level of stress I had been under almost constantly. The pain cut back my ability to work, as did the side-effects from the medication. I had to take time off despite myself, and some people's projects had to be reshuffled so I could manage them at a reduced pace. I spent Canfurence maintaining my nutrition with meal replacement drinks, as I couldn't eat most foods, and later I skipped doing Artist Alley at MFF because I was still dealing with pain and side-effects. I only went on these trips in this state at all because I knew my friends would give me the will to get through the whole mess. I've only just started to feel normal in the last few days, after finishing the course of medication and shaking off most of the side-effects. Whether I've fully recovered remains to be seen. I'll be wrapping up a few delayed projects in January – those affected by this situation were already made aware and have been very understanding, for which I am grateful.
The reason I mention all of this is not to make you feel sorry for me or put any kind of blame or guilt on anyone other than myself. My illness stemmed from my decisions and was the price for actions I took of my own accord. I mention it for a few reasons. First, some of you were worried about me after I mentioned during posting my Inktobers I was not well – this is what was happening. Second, if even one person reading this is living a similarly unbalanced lifestyle, let this be a warning of how you can harm yourself. I didn't have a warning and wish I had. Third, and perhaps most relevant to the majority of you, there are going to be some changes in my commission setup for 2018 onward. I want to make as many people happy with art as I can and create the best quality artwork that I can, but I also want to be making artwork for a long time. Time to take care of myself is no longer optional and will benefit both my health and my craft long-term. I'll soon be publishing new information on my schedule/availability and prices going forward. These changes will be carefully considered and as fair as I can make them for all.
Tonight, I was just able to have a burger for the first time in almost three months. It was incredible. You never appreciate food quite the same way as when you haven't been able to eat much for a while. Please take care of yourselves, too. I hope to see you around online or at conventions in the future.
Thank you once again for your patience with me and for your continued interest in my work. There's a lot I plan to do this year, including projects some of you have been asking for! Stay buggy (and healthy) out there!

Status Update + Themed "Elemental" Commissions!
Posted 8 years agoHappy October (and Inktober, to my fellow participants!) The weather is finally beginning to taper off a bit where I live and give way to autumn. I hope you all have been doing well!
What's up, Moth?
Since I know some of you are wondering about the immigration situation, I'm reporting that progress has been made! Canadian immigration requested some more info from us, which we provided, and also sent me to get a medical exam done (mainly to prove I don't have any serious contagious diseases, nothing too wild) which I did mid-September. That should be most of what they need from me to process the application. It'll be a while yet before Shiro and I hear anything further, but for the time being, we seem to be in good shape. We're seeing each other as we are able and just had a week together recently.
Commission Stuff
A big thank you to my many commissioners this year! I've had some fun repeat customers and unique one-offs. I've booked all available space in the October schedule at this point and have a few ongoing projects left to finish up as well. If there's something you'd like me to make for delivery at MFF or for a holiday gift, you should start thinking about that soon and get in touch also soon to make sure I can book you in time. (Remember, you don't have to pay immediately when you book, only when your slot is coming up!) For November, I want to change things up and do some themed commissions as a break from the typical mix-n-match of stuff I get normally! Here's all about that:
✨ Elemental Commissions! ✨
I'm a neon elemental - what are you? I'm open for a special series of commissions featuring your character as an elemental of your choice! You can pick from the periodic table, "earth" or "nature" elements, or even nontraditional concepts such as "chaos" or humorous ideas like "boxes". I'll depict your character among the element, bending or controlling it, exhibiting some of its qualities, or "being one with" it in some other way, perhaps even a combination! What speaks to you? What do you feel expresses the nature of your character?
These will be full-detail digital pieces with a significant level of artistic liberty. I want to be able to choose a great pose and interpretation of the element to make the image as cool as it can be. You'll provide your character's reference and your element choice. You can also give me some general notes on anything you specifically do not want, important details not to miss, etc. I may make changes to your character's clothing, if they wear any, or to their appearance (such as glowing eyes or markings, fur patches that fade into the element, etc. as the image calls for). I may also ask some questions about your character's personality to help me choose an appropriate pose or expression. You can choose to see a sketch check or be surprised with the final result as you desire, but I will not be making major changes at the sketch phase unless I have made a serious error in drawing your character.
I intend to create an image with my own character as a proper example; for the time being, here's a commission I did recently for Kaito (cw for blood) that is similar to what I'll be doing though more basic. These commissions will vary by your element but will include significant detail and may include environmental or symbolic components as well.
These will be $125 USD each, booked for creation in November. Payment is due 72 hours (3 days) before your slot. I will need your reference and element when you book so I can iron out any further details in advance of your booking. Let me know below if you'd like to get one, and I'll get you started!
The following people have already expressed interest when I discussed this project in the stream; please each of you let me know if you are officially booking now that you know the details or if you would prefer to drop out:

Thank you!
Other Notes
If you made it through all that (or skipped down here, haha), I hope you like bug stuff! The new holographic beetle stickers have been so popular in my shop I've ordered a restock already. I also have some really cool new things coming out on Monday that react to UV - you'll see! Cooking up lots of fun new merch has been keeping me busy. Take a look around and snap up your favorites at MaryCapaldi.com/shop!
For upcoming cons: I didn't get a table at MFF, but I'll still be there. I intend to apply for art show panels whenever they make those available. I did get a table at FC and will be there with a big assortment of sweet bug swag + commission availability to boot! After that we'll see what happens.

ANTHROCOOOOOOONNNN
Posted 8 years agoIt's that time of year again!!! This is gonna be my NINTH Anthrocon, hot dang. Here's what you need to know about my activities:
Dealer's Room Table C20
Come find me for a glorious assortment of buggy stuff as well as sketch and badge commissions and art prints! For the first time, I will be offering digital commissions ON-SITE. That's right, I can draw and print you a digital badge at the con! Sketches can still be done in your sketchbook or on loose bristol, of course. You can also grab stuff I normally have in my shop, from pins and charms to bandanas and buttons! I'll even have a very short-run edition of sketchbook zines available, and I'll doodle right inside the cover just for you if you want. Come on doooown!
Art Show
I'll have three panels of originals and prints up in the show, all framed or matted/bagged and ready to go! Don't miss out! Once I have my panel location, I'll tweet it and have it on display on my table sign.
BUG PANEL!
The fabulous Upstar was unable to make it to AC this year, so I am taking up the panelist mantle on top of the scrillion other things I do and will be hosting the Insect Meet & Greet on Friday at 7pm! All stripes of bug fans and bug-curious folk are welcome.
New Standees???
Remember the Friends of Anthrocon I created for AC's hotel partners last year? Well, they've kept me on as staff and there are five new characters this year! Be sure to check them out at the con - you can peep the Anthrocon twitter feed right now for teasers!
I hope to see many of you, friends old and new, in Pittsburgh this coming weekend! Safe travels if you're attending; otherwise, have a good weekend and see you when I get back again! 💖

Announcements!
Posted 8 years agoHey folks! Time for some news and information. I'll keep this brief-ish as I know you've got other important things to catch up on and art to look at and stuff!
Upcoming Cons!
I'll next be at Furnal Equinox in Toronto, March 17th-19th. I will be away on a short break during the convention and for the rest of the week after.
After that, you can find me at Anthrocon in Pittsburgh, June 29th-July 2nd, where I'll have a dealer table and intend to display in the art show as well. I might be running a panel this year, too. More on that later...
After that, I'm not sure what's going on until MFF! I might fit a con into the fall but we'll see.
Patreon Updates!
I've made a few changes to my Patreon to improve the experience for all my generous patrons. I'm also considering a Discord server for my patrons though still weighing pros/cons. Please take a look - we're only $6 away from my first goal and there are still 2 days to pledge for next month's rewards!
Commission Information
I've been thinking about my commission work for a while. Lately, I've been putting increased time and effort into my commissions to really make them the best they can be. I always want to give commissioners art they'll be pleased with, and I've had some folks recently even tell me that I delivered pieces well beyond their expectations. That kind of feedback is so encouraging!
As many of you know too, I'm on the immigration trail to Canada to live with my husband
catmonkshiro. We're planning ahead for our future together and getting our lives in order. Moving, paperwork fees, travel... all these things cost money. I'm more than willing to bust my ass to earn it and have been doing my best with that through a combination of commissions, my original merchandise, and Patreon. These imminent plans and future needs along with my growing investment of time and effort into my work has led me to a decision. I've actually been putting this off for a bit, but I think it's time.
I'm adjusting my commission prices. Not by any huge amount, just a margin I feel reflects my work while being fair to you folks as well. Even when I have to make these changes, it's important to me that things are reasonable and justified! Here's an overview on what to expect as of April 3rd, 2017:
Standard commissions: 1-character is now $75, 2-character is now $95. More characters are still available but priced on request.
Badges: Most badges are increasing by just +$5, except for Deluxe badges, which are not changing price.
A few other items will also see minor adjustments. Full updated information is available on my commission information page. (All prices in USD.)
If you've already booked a commission with me or received a quote for an upcoming project, don't worry - this doesn't affect your project! I'm booked through March as of last night, so this adjustment only affects totally new bookings starting in April. Thanks for all your support and understanding.
Bug Adoptables?
I recently had some interest into me making adoptable bug characters again. (I've only ever done a couple adoptables, so if you don't know, I really prefer to do each character as its own unique design rather than using a template.) So far I've been asked to consider scarab beetles, moths, and butterflies; I also have some ideas for bees. Is there anything you folks might like to see?
Thanks for coming with me on my creative journey, whether you've been here since the early sculpted charm days or just watched yesterday. 💖 Have a good day and week!

Back to Work + Question for Y'all
Posted 8 years agoHey folks! I'm back from my travels for the time being, including an incredible weekend tabling for the first time at Further Confusion. I met lots of lovely new people and was, as always, delighted and touched to hear how many were familiar with and enjoyed my work. I hope to come back next year if all falls in my favor. Despite a small health issue during the weekend, I had a great time, and I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a few extra days in California with a local friend who fed me sushi and got me back into crocheting a bit.
Anyway, I've returned to my work desk proper and am in the process of updating my queue and getting in touch with current commissioners. Thanks for your understanding and patience - my time away in December/January was a bit more extensive than in previous years, but it was very rewarding and refreshing. I've booked out the remainder of January with work at this point, though I do have slots available in February for those of you who would like to schedule projects! I'm open for all my regular items and will be taking a special batch of Valentine's cards again soon as well. More on that before long!
Hope you all have been well and had a good holiday season and beginning of 2017.
My shop has been on hiatus while I've been gone but will be reopening with some updates this week! I'm doing post-FC inventory and should have everything from pins to prints available online again shortly. There's some exciting new merch ideas I'd like to explore this year if it all pans out. Fingers crossed!
Not too much else to say at the moment. I have some new things to upload, and I'd like to catch up on what folks have been up to in the past while.
Come to think of it, I do have a question for you folks about how you see me and my work. I run a dealer table at a few cons a year and typically, the person you'll meet behind the table is me unless I've had to run to the bathroom for a moment or something. However, I've repeatedly had people come up to my table and ask me questions like:
"Where's Moth Monarch?"
"Will Moth Monarch be back soon?"
"Are you a friend of Moth Monarch?"
Once I even had a dude look straight at me and tell his buddy on the phone that "Moth Monarch" wasn't at "his" table at the moment.
This is pretty baffling, to be honest, and I'm trying to figure out why it happens. At first I thought maybe it was because people expected a guy, as people have assumed my husband to be me when he's watched the table for a few minutes. Then at FC I had a friend help me out a few times who looks so much like me (short, glasses, dark hair, etc) that people ask if we're sisters - and folks thought SHE was Moth Monarch. There were times we were at the table together and people either assumed she was the artist or we were jointly the artist. But not me. For some reason, I regularly get people who don't believe I'm me.
Here's me at my FC table last weekend.
And here's me with an incredibly adorable moth fursuiter.
I'm a goofy-looking human with hair that makes no sense. I wear a giant badge and have hardly any legs to speak of. And I draw the bugs! Maybe I'm nothing special or exciting, but that's okay. I'm me, and that's what I'm supposed to be.
Anyway, maybe I'll eventually figure out what that's all about. Until next time, be well! Stay safe! Believe in yourself!

Going to MFF! Quick Notes
Posted 9 years agoToday is the last day to put in an order for MFF delivery! You can use the sale ending tonight even for deliveries. Just include your badge name for the con and some contact info at checkout (a number to text is ideal) and I'll refund your shipping and find you with your stuff! See more on the sale & my shop here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/21824819/
And here's some of the usual info people are interested in with conventions:
Hotel & Travel:
Flying in Thursday, leaving Monday morning. Staying at the Aloft with
catmonkshiro,
danraccoon, and
alphazeron!
Are you bringing art? Selling? Etc?
I will have two panels with originals and some lovely prints in the art show! I won't have a table this time, though.
Con plans?
Let's hang out, draw, play some games, generally have a good time. I'm up for partying if your idea of partying is mainly very chill. Come find me with my big-ass Moth Monarch badge! I don't bite and I love meeting new folks.
A little about me
I am a 5'0" pale person with short dark hair, dark eyes, and glasses. I'm 26 years old and married. She or They pronouns are both OK! My badge is pretty huge, so look for that. I'll be wearing a bright red trenchcoat when outdoors.
Are you friendly?
Say hi! Don't be shy! Please don't hug me out of nowhere, but most people I know at least a little bit are OK for hugs. I'm happy to go for a meal together but I do have some dietary restrictions (for this reason I don't accept most gifts of food, sorry!)
Basically, let's have a good time - it's pretty much Holiday Con! Hope to see a bunch of you there!
---
After MFF, my next con will be FC, where I'll be in the art show and dealer's room. I'll also be at Furnal Equinox in March and Anthrocon again (as always) in June/July. I might have another con in there somewhere, but I'm not sure yet.
I have a few commissions I'll need to finish up when I get home before I can take any more work. I do have some special little projects I am anticipating doing in December, though, so keep an eye out - the snow icons will be making a comeback, for one, quite possibly with a twist! I've got a lot of neat plans for next year and ideas cooking in my head. Thank you all for coming along for the ride!
Finally, you have a few more days to join my Patreon for this month's pledge rewards. If you join at the Bug Club tier, you'll get a very special holiday ornament as your monthly gift! Check it out! :D

Happy Halloween! Some Updates & Comms Open
Posted 9 years agoI finished Inktober! Not bad for my first year doing this challenge! The complete set starts here on FA, or take a gander at the grid for 2 through 31 at a glance.
TONIGHT IS YOUR LAST CHANCE to pledge to my Patreon for October - you can get the high-res files for all of these and more at the Sketchbook Access level, or join the Bug Club tier to choose one of the ORIGINALS to take home! More info on that in this post. November's reward if you choose to stay on is going to be a cute wooden holiday ornament of my original design, so this is a great time of year to hop on board in general.
Commissions for November are Open! This includes but is not limited to MFF badges, standard and full illustration commissions (singles and sequences), sketches, and more! Comics are also now an option, though I will not be taking them very often. Slots in November are LIMITED, so get in touch with me soon if there's something I can do for you! Basic information available here; feel free to get in touch with questions or to inquire about a custom project.
In the meantime, I've been working on a variety of projects including designs and products for the shop and a new fine art piece. The new enamel pins to raise funds to help the bees have received a good and strong response; there's still time to preorder "Bee Yourself" or "Queen Bee" if you want to help pollinators and get an awesome pin for doing it! Spread the word if you can, too!
Finally, my next convention is coming up quickly! I'll be at MFF in Chicago, December 1st-4th. I won't have a table in the Dealer's room but I will have two panels in the art show with special prints and a few new originals available for bid! MFF has really become "holiday con" for me and I very much enjoy spending the time with folks hanging out and doodling together when I could be parked behind a table. Even so, I'll be up for art and shop deliveries during the convention if there's something you want from me!
That's it for now, I think. Enjoy your Halloween!! Thanks for sticking around with me and taking a look at what I do now and then. I appreciate it and hope you continue to enjoy my work!

Got Married!
Posted 9 years agoSo yes, I'm back now from Toronto where
catmonkshiro and I were recently married! I miss him a lot already, but everything went just fantastic with the wedding itself and we had a lot of fun in the company of a small group of close friends. Some pictures have been floating around social media - here's one of my favorites, and a few more taken by one of our bridesmaids.
At this point, I will still be living in the Philly area until immigration grants me permission to live and work in Canada. This is going to take a while - almost certainly well over a year, possibly longer. I'll be visiting Shiro as much as I can reasonably afford and fit into my schedule while working on commissions and bug projects as I have been doing up until now. Since people have been asking about when I'll be moving to Canada, I thought I'd clarify that up-front here.
I'm getting back to work and will be tackling the remaining projects I wasn't able to wrap up before the wedding. I also have a few commission openings for this month still available if you'd like me to make something for you! Get in touch & we'll get you set up!
My next convention is MFF in December, where I will be in the art show, but I won't have a table. After that, I'll be at FC in January - I will have a table as well as panels in the art show!
I will be returning to streaming this week, and Shiro and I have some surprises in store for everybody in the coming few months. More specifics and news when we get there, pretty much! We're kind of recovering from wedding brain (seriously, planning even a small one takes a lot out of you) and will do our best to return to normal operations as quickly as possible. Thanks for understanding!!
Hope you all have been well while we were away. It's finally starting to cool down a bit in this area of the world, and I'm looking forward to autumn (my favorite season). What's been up?
See you around!

Trying to keep my head on straight! Update
Posted 9 years agoThings have been hectic around here, so I figure everyone deserves an update!
Since AC, I've been juggling family matters, wedding arrangements, and getting commissions done! Unfortunately, this left me a little slower than usual for a while, and there are ongoing interruptions here and there as things come up, but I'm still doing the best I can and will keep at it. I have been in contact with just about everybody regarding their orders and will get caught up ASAP! I should be able to make considerably greater headway the rest of this week and next week than was possible last week.
For those of you who have a badge print coming to them with their AC takehome order, please be advised I had to get more ink for my printer and it is currently on the way from the company. It's due here Friday, which means I can print and mail the badges that are finished over the weekend. If you need your badge print urgently, please let me know and I will see about alternate arrangements to get it to you sooner.
I will have very limited commissions available in the first half of August, but you should get in touch with me soon if you want to schedule something then! Otherwise, you may book in September if you like; as usual with me, you can book a slot and only pay for it closer to the scheduled date. My standard commission types & prices are here.
!! THIS PART IS EXTRA IMPORTANT !!
I'll be away from my workdesk from August 18th - September 3rd, during which time
catmonkshiro and I will be away getting married. I will probably not be available for business matters in that stretch. It is totally OK to note or email me then, and I will get back to you when I return to work! However, I do ask that during just that time, people avoid contacting me for business or bug IDs on Twitter specifically. These things have interrupted time away before, and I don't mean to be rude or make myself inaccessible to people, but I think it's not outside the realm of reason to request some discretion on just one social site around the time of the wedding. Thank you very much for understanding. ❤️
Finally, for those of you who want SWEET BUG STUFF from my shop, the NATIONAL MOTH WEEK sale has been running again this week and will continue through Saturday, the 30th! Just use "MOTHWEEK" at checkout for 15% off your entire order - that includes bugdanas, buttons, art prints, EVERYTHING! Only at marycapaldi.storenvy.com :D
OH! And there will be a patron-sponsored stream on Saturday, the 30th, in the evening (EST) featuring my work and projects rather than commissions. I'll be giving notice when I start, so please feel free to come in, hang out, and ask questions! Made possible by my lovely patrons, who will be thanked during the stream!
Be well & I'll have more art to post soon!

Back from AC!
Posted 9 years agoWhat a con it was!!! This was my first year on staff, and the secret project I was working on in May started to be revealed as I was en route on Wednesday: THE STANDEES! Seven of the eight convention partner hotels each had their own roughly 6' tall mascot, all drawn by me. They were super well-received and I was thrilled to see everyone's reactions and to be recognized for my hard work. I had record sales this con as well - thank you SO MUCH! - and got to meet (or meet again) so many, many wonderful people. I even got to go to the first ever Insect Meet & Greet, hosted by 1coin, where catmonkshiro helped me give out ROCK THE BUG LIFE ribbons and we did a random draw for a stag beetle plushie. Tons of other cool things besides! I could write a con report from here to the moon!!!
This week I'll be gradually getting back into business now that AC has come to a close. I have received some notes about take-home orders and will be getting in touch with everyone in the next few days. My fiancé,
catmonkshiro, will be in town here with me for another week, so I am not returning to full-time business immediately, but I don't want anyone to feel ignored or out of the loop! So don't worry, I won't forget you. :)
I will be posting reasonable web-sized versions of the art for all the Anthrocon standees shortly, now that the surprise is over, for anyone who would like to see them.
We also got post-con inventory taken care of for my shop items, and the shop is now reopened! Some things totally sold out during the con and will need to be reordered when possible, but there are still some buttons, charms, bandanas, etc. available - go get your bug goodies!
My next convention will be MFF, where I will do just the art show; after that, I'm happy to say I have been accepted into FC's newly expanded dealer's room and will be in California once again in January! I also intend to do the art show there. After that, who knows...
I'm sure there are other notes I'd like to make and things to bring up that are presently slipping my mind. I will try to talk about them all later. Right now, thank you all so much for all the love and support! Be well! Have a good rest of the season! And STAY BUGGY!

ANTHROCON | COME TO B20 AND OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
Posted 9 years agoYEP, AS ALWAYS, this bug is gonna be at ANTHROCON HELL YES heck yes
I will be at B20 in the Dealer's room, next to
agentelrond! I'll have a whole stack of the latest sweet bug swag as well as art prints and commission slots! You can also find some brand new originals and specialty prints in the art show - three whole panels of 'em! Come on down and say hi! I have super-cool NEON GREEN ribbons for Patrons and anybody who makes a purchase at my table (while supplies last, but I got a good stack of 'em so we should be OK).
On top of all that, there's gonna be a wicked neat surprise attendees should first encounter pretty soon after arriving. It's the result of the "secret project" I've mentioned a few times now. Super looking forward to hearing what people think!
AND I'm gonna do my darndest to show up at the very first bug panel on Friday night. I mean. It's me!
As a final note, since there were a few episodes of confusion about this last year... I'm not a dude! I don't use the phrase "SHE IS KING" for nothing!
Other info from that AC meme that may interest you:
When will you be arriving and leaving?
Wednesday afternoon / Monday afternoon
What do you look like?
I am short, white, with short brown hair, dark eyes, and glasses. But really, just look for the huge honkin' Moth Monarch badge. I might also have a little crown at some point...
May I approach you/talk to you?
Please come say hi, it's OK! Just use your best judgement - if I'm walking in a hurry or already engaged in a conversation, I might not be able to break off right in that moment to have an extended interaction with you. But I promise I don't bite! I try to be friendly and welcoming and I discourage that "oh no this artist is too good to talk to me" mindset people get into somehow.
Can I touch you?
Handshakes are OK, hugs are usually OK. Let's keep it in that department!
May I take your picture?
I'm going to want a copy of it, but usually I'll allow it.
Do you do free art or trades?
Sorry, commissions only. This is my business; I support myself with it.
Do you plan to volunteer?
I'm staff now. They got me.
SEE YOU THERE I HOPE, IT'S GONNA ROCK

Anthrocon Badges! Sketches Open Too! & Gossip
Posted 9 years agoANTHROCON BADGES ARE OPEN! AC is coming up fast and I only have so much work time left, so I'd really recommend you get in touch as soon as possible if you'd like a badge ready for you at the con. Check out some examples here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/20135658/
Furthermore, I'm thinking of taking a few clean sketches to be done in the next week or two - $10 bust, $25 full body (USD). Possibly with flat color for a little more. Let me know if you're interested!
Regular commissions remain open, though very limited slots in June remain.
Also, I'd like to mention that lately I have been made aware that there may be some things going around about me, my business, and my practices that are untrue. Please don't believe everything you hear! If you are told anything that sounds strange, it's OK to ask about it - I'd rather people do than assume things about me. Thank you for understanding.

Thank you so much to the new patrons who joined this month! Today is the LAST DAY to sign up for May pledges and receive June rewards. Pledge as little as $1! Bug Club level patrons will be receiving this fabulous button set as their special gift this time!
---
Finally, after the FA shenanigans that have happened recently, I've made an FN account and will be trying to get it and my Weasyl up to speed in the next couple weeks. My FN is: https://beta.furrynetwork.com/mothmonarch/
See you around and be well! Stay buggy!
I am done the secret project at last! Back to regular work for me, so I should be uploading again pretty shortly. Thanks for your patience and understanding!
ANTHROCON
I'm gonna be at AC because of COURSE I am. I'll have commissions available and a healthy stock of bug goodies at Table B20! I'll also have three panels in the art show with new originals and special prints!

May Update & What's Ahead
Posted 9 years agoSo! Some quick notes!
As you might've already noticed, I will be quieter this month and won't be streaming or posting as much art publicly for a little bit. I have taken almost no commissions for May because I am on a very large project I am not able to disclose at this time. I will also be away from my workdesk for a little while, tending to wedding arrangements with
catmonkshiro and attending What the Fur. Things will pick up again in June, and I am already booking commissions for that month (you do not need to pay for a slot until I am about to begin). So please bear with me for the next few weeks. Feel free to get in touch if there is something I can do for you, particularly if you need it for Anthrocon, as I have limited time I can still allocate for badges and con-delivery projects.
On that note, I had a lot of fun recently with this art deco badge commission and would welcome further AC theme commissions should anyone be interested. My regular badge offerings are also available - see my info here.
There's new stuff in the shop, especially the cicada and stag beetle charms and the new set of bug buttons, so make sure to check it out here! I will have buttons, bandanas, prints, and other merch from my shop at AC as well if you're attending and would rather snag it in person!
Finally, on a more personal note, I recently received a sweet as heck custom plushie of my character, Moth Monarch, that I commissioned from Sewgoods Plush. Here are her photos if you want to see - I'll be periodically posting more of the plush on my Twitter in various places and with fun props as I have done with Lily, my other plush moth by Sewgoods, in the past.
Thanks and hope you all are well! Have a good week!
