So basically the one thing I want to buy myself for Christmas is a new phone. I've got an Alcatel One Touch Fierce that I've had for about a year and it just...isn't great. It's getting to the point where it lags, the camera is awful, etc., etc. I'd really like something a bit newer, basically. Okay, so, story of what happened last night.

Friend has this giant Godzilla figure that has what looks like speakers in the chest. We assumed, well, it must make noise and, therefore, must have a battery compartment somewhere. So we open it up and find it and there's no screw bit for the compartment, trying to flip it up doesn't work, what the hell? So I grab my multi-tool and we try prying it open with the knife, with the screwdriver, with other parts, nothing.

So I figure, it's gotta come off, right? So I'm working at it with the knife part and talking and I guess I just bent weird and the knife folded in on my middle finger. I didn't realize until I felt something 'thump' against my hand and half of the blade was embedded in my flesh.

(mind you, i had also just beforehand turned the blade so it was facing away from me, trying to be safe so it didn't slip and stab me)

Blade comes out of my finger, blood rises up, finger goes in my mouth and I exit Lauren's room so I don't

a.) bleed on her things
b.) pass out because that's what happens sometimes when i realize i am not invincible

So I sit in the kitchen with my hand above my head and it's twenty or so minutes and it's still bleeding. We wait just a little longer, to make sure I'm feeling well enough to get up and move, then we head off to the ER to get me some stitches.

(also akron general's er is amazing)

ER visit was shockingly quick. I got two stitches bundled with the news that I may have severed or nicked a tendon (right now i have what's called 'mallet finger', where i cannot straighten out my finger completely) and that may require surgery depending on the severity. I also had to get a tetanus shot because the last time I had one was probably when I was a child.

(getting the stitches themselves was nothing, whatever it is they do to pull the skin back and clean it beforehand was awful)

I've got a splint now with an extension piece that goes down to my palm to keep my finger straight, which is annoying as shit. But pain hasn't been too bad overall. They gave me a prescription for percoset, but I probably won't bother filling it.

While I can still kinda draw, my middle finger is obviously where I rest my pencil at, so I GUESS I'M NOT DOING THAT FOR A LITTLE WHILE. Kind of a bummer, but hopefully it won't be for too long after I see the ortho surgeon and get things rolling with that.

Okay, so, I generally don't gripe about not being able to pick up commission work, especially since I went, like, two years on a commission hiatus (which was great, don't get me wrong, it was the best idea). But now that I want to do commissions and I feel comfortable doing them....there's nothin'.

I think I've picked up maybe five things of paid work in the last couple months?

I can't figure out what's 'wrong'. I have a pretty wide range of prices and I always state that what's not on my comm sheet can always be inquired about. I'm offering both digital and traditional stuff (though i need to do a price sheet for traditional work, i suppose now) with pieces from headshot sketches to full color badges.

I've been posting everywhere I have a site (here, facebook, instagram, tumblr, weasyl, sofurry, reddit - those primarily), but I haven't been posting so much it's been obnoxious, I don't think (cause i know when i see people doing that it can get kind of annoying). I've been using appropriate tags on the places that have tags, my stuff has been signal boosted by both friends and relatively popular artists in the fandom (waitress/hensa and anya/loadedpistol in particular).

It's so frustrating because I'd like to be doing commission work and I'd like to be bringing in a little extra cash to help with all the crap going on in my personal life (bills, vet bills, other bills, etc., etc., the never-ending bills of adulthood).

I just...I don't know what I'm missing or what I maybe should be doing, where else I could advertise, what else I could do to get more interest at all.

Suggestions??

Does anyone know if Furbuy/Dealer's Den is worth it for selling original pieces?

So I went ahead and bit the bullet and set up an account for commissions/ychs/adoptables and all that jazz over at obliviousally-comms. I've cleared out most of my old commissions from here and uploaded them over that way. I'll probably pull over some other stuff I've done, too, like freebies and the like, to help bulk some of my newer material out.

Does anyone have and pros/cons of having/managing separate accounts for stuff like commissions or specific subject matters? I'm thinking of making a separate account for commissions to help clean up my gallery and have a fresh place to pull in new watchers and potential customers.

Just doing inks and flat colors for a friend's badge commission, is all! No mic/music, I don't want to bog down my connection, but I'll be chatting!

Samcat is doing better! We're not completely out of the woods yet, but he's been improving a lot just over the last two days. I've been giving him cat milk to help with the fact that he can't eat/it hurts him to eat right now until the antibiotics start doing their job full time. He ate a little wet food last night and actually chewed some instead of just licking the juice/gravy.

He's been in better spirits, as well, a lot more alert at things and purring/lashing his tail about. He chirped at me today, too, which was great to hear.

So I'm trying not to get my hopes too high, but it's SO relieving to see some improvement in him. I'm hoping what the vet thought could be something more serious is just a cat flu or a severe respiratory infection, because SO many cat illness symptoms overlap into each other (lethargy/mouth ulcers/weight loss/etc are such common symptoms they show up in almost all cat illnesses).

My little Samcat was ill before Anthrocon and I thought it was a typical cold - which he's gotten in the past and pass relatively quickly - but when we came back he had lost a lot of weight and was barely eating. I took him to the vet today and, while he tested negative for FIV/Feline Leukemia, the vet said that she rarely sees cats in his condition recover from the state he's in. He has some ulcers on his mouth and is dehydrated, as well. She suggested putting him down and said that it may come to that even with aggressive hospitalization (which i cannot afford, it's something like $400/day) and/or antibiotics.

So I brought him home with some vet prescribed painkillers and antibiotics in hopes that maybe there's that slim chance he'll bounce back and put on some weight and be okay, but I'm anticipating the worst outcome because at least then, I'll be prepared.

I'm open for commission stuff (and i may do other stuff aside from what's there - like inked/colored full body things and stuff like that) in hopes I can maybe get him full bloodwork done (it's $100) and see if maybe we can narrow down what's wrong with him and if there's any hope of getting him healthy again.

At Anthrocon this year I ended up getting a handful of inquiries about commissions/badge stuff and the like! A lot of local folks knew I wasn't taking commissions, but they weren't aware I'd re-opened for stuff. So I think, when I get home, I'm going to post new commission prices and stuff so they're visible and folks can see what I'm open for.

It'll probably be conbadges, sketches/inks, maybe some simple flat color things. Nothing huge, not going to make myself available for ANYTHING, because that's what burnt me out last time. But I figure I'll take commissions when I feel like drawing them and then close when I'm starting to feel burnt out or something.

So we're riding over to Pittsburgh with a friend (we live in ohio, about two hours away, but our car has been out of commission for the last year and a half), but he's leaving on WEDNESDAY and we don't have our hotel room until THURSDAY.
