Tips for a Great Oklacon!
General | Posted 14 years agoHey all! We're less than a week away from the 9th installment of the first furry outdoor furry convention in America, now the largest in the world! Oklacon will take place Oct 19-24 at Roman Nose State Park in Watonga, OK. With over 267 furs on the preregistered list, we stand to have our biggest year yet. Considering our crazy-awesome growth and the huge number of new faces registering this year, here's a list of some tips and directions to make your getting-there and enjoying-it experience the best it can be! :)
1. Come to registration with your gov't issued photo ID, your car tag number, and if you're under 18 as of Oct 20, your NOTARIZED signed permission form. Cash is king at registration, and if you forget to bring cash, an ATM is located at the lodge on your way into the park. While not required, it never hurts to have a copy of your PayPal receipt.
2. RNSP is a wildlife refuge as well as a state park. As furries can appreciate, the rangers are very concerned about the protection of the local wildlife and preventing the land from erosion, and for this reason, a park ranger may ask you to move your car if they feel it might create an erosion problem. PLEASE DO NOT SPEED ANYWHERE IN THE PARK. Unfortunately, some park visitors have done this and struck and killed horses that can freely move through areas of the park. We're excited to see you too, but once you enter the park, slow down! The 25 MPH speed limit is not only for your safety (and to prevent you from getting a ticket), but for the protection of the wildlife.
3. Remember to bring a pillow, a blanket, a warm jacket, and a sleeping bag, even if you're staying in an A-Frame. Temperatures should be great next weekend, but will dip into the upper-40's at night and it's breezy in the canyon at the park. When camping, you can never bring enough underwear and socks, and if you're an avid hiker or climber, remember to bring a canteen or reusable water bottle.
4. Alcohol is permitted, but anything beyond what you can buy in a C-Store (hard liquors spirits) must be kept in cabins, lodge rooms, or motels in town. The hard stuff isn't allowed by state park law on the Group Camp site.
5. We're different. Very different. Hotel cons have a certain predictability and a certain feel. We have a totally different pace and experience. It's important to show up excited and open to new ideas. At Oklacon, people don't hide in hotel rooms to drink, they get out to explore, hike, sit on bluffs and talk under the stars, sing next to the campfire, and commune in a way many furries haven't had the chance to before. While Oklacon isn't like hotel conventions, no two Oklacons are ever the same either. So, whether you're a OCON newbie or a veteran, come with an open mind and heart, and let's kick off a week of great times with the 300 best friends you'll ever have. :]

Preregistration is closed! An awesome year is in store! :D
General | Posted 14 years agoGreetings all!
Oklacon Preregistration has closed, and the final preregistration number is 261, which will easily push our at-the-door attendance over 300. Once again, your generous support and enthusiasm will bring our family together for another week-long of events, fun, and community as we gather from Oct 19 - 24 for Oklacon 9. More details on preregistration stats, including some charts, can be found here: http://oklacon.livejournal.com/60544.html
Oklacon is entirely committed to it's charity, Safari's Interactive Animal Sanctuary, and we'll have a lot of great opportunities to help them feed hungry kitties this winter through charity poker, to table-top games with buy-ins for charity, to a renowned charity auction. Both we and the hungry, exotic animals they care for greatly appreciate you all. Together, we show that furries are capable of great things, both individually in our efforts, and collectively as we work to do great things for our animal kin.
So, pack well, bundle up, and get ready for the biggest, best Oklacon yet. We can't wait to meet the new ones joining our fold, or our old friends returning home again. See you there!
