I don't know where some of you went to school, but in the off chance that any of you might've had, at any time, this teacher as an instructor in your life, and don't know her story - I'll share.

Mindy Bryant Lanoux was a glorious English teacher when I met her at Floresville High School. I had her for class one year. She was very young, only ten years my senior, but was clever and quick as a whip. Always peppy, she was more a cheerleader than an English teacher ;)

Time goes on, people move on, she went to teach in San Antonio and I lost touch. I found her again via the most sad thing possible: a Caringbridge journal where she shared her updates on the cancer that was going to kill her. A stage 4 metastatic melanoma left masses in her lungs and liver, and later all throughout. She was only 34 at the time of her diagnosis, and she fought like hell even though she was given a low survival rate at that time. She was a pioneer in many studies involving new radical cancer treatments, and she still tutored on the side to devote time to her passion for teaching today's youth, in spite of her pain and weakness.

The cancer claimed her life on September 1st. She was 37 years old. She left behind three kids, the youngest only 3 years old, a devoted, heartbroken husband, and many MANY students who will forever remember her light in the classroom.

Goodbye Mrs. Lanoux, I am thankful to have know you for as briefly as I did.

So I am an avid gardener and this summer has really been one of growth; I have found myself with WAY too damn many plants and am selling them off cheap so they get love.

I have:
4" pots of aloe vera, $1.50 each (x8)
4" pots of Jade plant babies, $2.00 each (x2)
4" pots of Holiday cactus, $1.50 each (x2)
Handful of live Spanish moss, $2.50 each (about 4-5)
Dauben water lily babies, 3"-5" tall bareroot, $5 each - these go anywhere from $15-25 online (x10)
4" pots of torch aloe, $1 each (x1)
4" pots of New Mexico agave century plants, $4.50 each (x2)

I also can make cuttings of catnip, chocolate mint, spearmint, peppermint, trailing torenia "summer wave", coleus (3 varieties), sedum, and red salvia if anyone is interested. The mints are very hardy and delicious, the torenia is a gorgeous hanging basket plant that does well in this weather, and the coleus grows very lush with a bit of daily water. Sedum is a succulent cactus, which is my specialty; I intend to start doing succulent container art as well as epiphyte displays for future decor sale.

I can ship Jade plants, water lilies, Spanish moss, and probably the century plants; the others will do best picked up locally. Do let me know if you all want anything, because I don't have room for all these babies and they just keep growing :(

If you want to know more about any of these plants just ask. Also, a water lily can be grown in a 3 gallon tub so don't let a lack of a pond hinder your choices ;) If you buy water lilies for any sort of pond or tub I will include a few baby black mollies for mosquito control.

It all began February 6, 2003. The Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder I was friends with via her son that went to school with me whelped another litter from the sweetest dog I had ever met up to that point. This litter had eleven puppies, and to the breeder's dismay, three were blonde with liver noses. She'd always bred Red dogs before, with black noses, and was biased against these little yellow potatoes.

It was one such potato that caught my heart. At three days old, I first held her. She was so pale she was nearly white. Her pink nose was precious. I was in love.

She grew, as all good puppies do, and was sold to a breeder in California at about 12 weeks old. She flew away from me with two siblings, and I resigned myself to her loss. I was happy beyond belief when she was returned a month later, due to some drama. I begged my mother to let me have this dog. I NEEDED this dog. And with high school graduation around the corner, I would have all the time in the world for this dog!

So I acquired Jade.

That summer, we grew up together. We learned together. We bonded. She was my best friend.

Jade accompanied me through college, boyfriends, moving five times, and the start of my marriage. She was always there for me, when no one else was, when it was too hard, or when I just needed the company. She eventually got a dog brother, and three cat brothers.

It was just last summer after my husband and I returned from a week-long trip in July that I noticed she was stumbling. It was ever so slight, I thought I was imagining things. Never the less, I watched her, always, and saw the progression. She was indeed stumbling, swaying, seeming weaker in the rear. We ran bloodwork, did radiographs, and put her on various things from painkillers to antiinflammatories, and nothing worked to fix her sway. All results were normal. My vet was stumped, and took her research further.

It was around September, I think, that she handed me a printout on Degenerative Myelopathy. She asked if the symptoms fit the bill. I was devastated. They did. So we sent blood out to a research lab that was running DNA profiles free of charge for research purposes, and her results were returned to us a couple weeks later.

Affected. My dog was affected for DM. And it had begun.

Slowly, but surely, she lost control of her rear legs, her bowels, her bladder. She lost muscle mass. She'd knuckle her back feet, causing wear on her toenails and the tops of her paws. She began falling earlier this year. It wasn't bad at first, a trip here or there only when she was being extra frisky, but it was happening. I watched on in horror.

By April I knew I couldn't let her continue to lose herself. Her mind was intact, the same happy dog I had forever it seemed, but she couldn't be who she wanted to be with legs like that. Her muscle wasting spread to her upper body, and two weeks ago I noticed she was knuckling in the front.

A month ago I made the appointment. THE appointment. The one that as I type this is making me tear up and I'm trying so hard not to cry, I haven't cried yet (not truly) and I don't want to give in, because I don't know when I'll stop.

And yesterday, a glorious Friday the 13th, I laid to rest my best friend of eight years. I held her as her wasted body slowly sank to the table, her chin on my knee, forever at peace. Her body is being donated to research for DM, and what is left I'll be getting back in a white urn with a ceramic impression of her paw.

Goodbye, Good Dog. I am so glad to have known you, even if you were taken from me too soon.

It all began February 6, 2003. My best friend's mother had just bred another litter of Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies, and this time there were some differences. Liver noses! Blonde puppies! Up until this point, only reds with black noses had been born. I was smitten by a little blonde girl with a pink nose. She grew up, was sold to a show prospect home, and shipped to California.

A month later, she returned (long dramallama story). I fell in love with her all over again, and begged my mother to let me have a dog. I was about to graduate high school, and I could have all summer to bond and train her before college. She finally agreed, and Jade came home.

Seven and a half years later (last July), Jade began to wobble. It was nearly imperceptible, but I knew my dog. I had her checked out at the vets. Bloodwork normal. Radiographs normal. I tried painkillers, anti-inflammatories, and other medications in an attempt to see if it was arthritis or whatnot. Her wobbling progressed. And by August I knew something more sinister was happening. My vet and I researched and researched and looked for what could cause this wobble, this degeneration in my dog's ear legs. She had no dysplasia. She seemed so healthy. And finally, with a deeply troubled look, the vet approached me with a printout. She said to look it over, and let me know if it fit the bill.

It did. We sent bloodwork to a research facility. For the official fax diagnosis a week later. Degenerative myelopathy. My dog's nervous system was falling apart, slowly causing her to lose the ability to walk in her rear limbs. Eventually, it would move to the front half of her, and she'd become paralyzed. Most dogs lose bowel and urinary control, and a lot of them do great in diapers and doggy wheelchairs. I could do neither for her, based on my home and my job at the time. Sure enough she became unhousetrained due to disease. She began to fall. In spite of how much I feed, her body has become thin. She is losing muscle mass. And I finally booked the appointment to put my best friend to rest. She made it to her 8th birthday in February, and I have three more weeks to spend with my darling, gorgeous girl. Life will never be the same. I feel it's not fair that I was forced into this position, with a disease like DM that is painless and only debilitating. Jade doesn't know why she's wobbly. She doesn't have a care in the world but to be a dog. If it were a painful or sudden ailment, then it's an easier decision to let go of one's suffering. But she seems so happy, and that's the hardest part.

But I can't let my friend continue to fall, and injure herself, and get thinner and thinner. I can't watch this. So I have made my decision. And it's the shittiest thing I have ever had to do. On the bright side, if there is one, I'm donating more samples after her passing to the research facility, to further find out the causes and hopefully find a cure for this disease. Jade's final gift to the world.

In case anyone reads this and is interested; I have two (female?) 5-6 month old kittens in my guest bathroom right now. They will be taken in and spayed Monday or Tuesday at a lost-cost for ferals clinic, and then I have the option of finding them homes, or releasing them back into the woods behind my parents' house - where they might get eaten by dogs or owls.

They are skittish around strangers but have already warmed up to me here in less than an hour. I think at this age they will tame down into fine pets. If you or anyone you know wants a kitten, drop me a line.

Let me preface this with: I'm an RVT (registered vet tech) and I work in a VCA animal hospital in San Antonio, TX.

While at work today, I was getting a quick history on two puppies that were in for their boosters. Standard is to get a weight and a temperature. Both were weighed, and put into a room; I then started asking the gentleman how his dogs were doing and if any problems had arose since we last saw them so that I could bring it up to a vet.

The pups were fine, so I grabbed the temps before I left to get their shots. One puppy didn't care, the other got nervous and looked back at me, clearly unhappy with what I was doing to his bum.

Imagine the shock and immediate laughter I had to withhold when the guy consoled his dog with, "It's okay, Ollie. Not like she's a furry or anything."

I'm at a bit of a crossroads regarding suits. My first and thus far only suit, my caracal, sits in pieces around my house, head here, paws there, tail MIA. I was never fully satisfied with the head, and desire to make it better - fix up the jaw fabric, make it a proper neck, round out the back of the head better and fix the now totally broken chinboard. I just can't find the motivation to do it, even though I know that once I get started, I usually get rolling and get a lot of work done.

So it sits.

I have bags of fabric sitting around in my spare room, and tons of material for creation blocking use of my kitchen table. I have a commission to finish before February and I finally have a sewing machine so I don't have to do it all by hand again. I know once I get going, there will be no stopping me.

Why can't I find it in me to pick it up?

My dragon partial as well, for Acting Up, sits around. The balaclava and elastic are done, the fabric just WAITING for a stitch, to transform into claws and tails... but when I look at it all, I think to myself that I could be better off playing WoW or reading something or visiting with my spouse.

I even seem to rather enjoy letting others abuse my caracal than I enjoy being in it. I probably spent what, ten minutes in it last time and then let Wolf wear it for the better part of gosh, at least an hour.
