GalaCon
Posted 9 years agoSo.. What started as an afterthought after watching the top ten pony videos of some moths back, slowly became intent, and now I'm (almost) all packed and ready to head out to GalaCon in Germany.
I'll be driving the car of my mother's boyfriend, over 500 km, and staying on a small camping some 45 minute drive from the venue. Not ideal, but a heluva lot cheaper than a hotel room. And strangely, it seems that is the closest camping! I might also stay a few nights longer, simply to enjoy camping by myself.
I have no idea what to expect at GalaCon. Should be interesting, at the very least, and I will enjoy the drive out too.

OH Canadaaaaa!
Posted 11 years agoI in Toronto this weer for the International Astronautical Congress. I get to present my first scientific paper at an international conference.
My supervisor was coming with me, until a family emergency last week forced him to stay home. Still he brought me in contact with one of his other colleagues who was going (same flight too), and I found a nice con buddy in him.
It's fun, but my wife and daughter miss me horribly.
(and I miss them too...)
Gotta present on Thursday.
Gotta sleeeeeep now! -_-
Cheers!!

They're home!!
Posted 12 years agoThank you, everybody who kept Ellysa and the little one on their prayer. I was so scared when I wrote that last journal! But they arrived home today, and now my family is whole again!
I'm so happy!
I'm so happy!
Good news, but SOS!
Posted 12 years agoHey Everybody
Good and bad tidings, all wrapped into one. I need you guy's help..
So things have been moving along surprisingly fast. The IND (immigration service) took only one month to make their decision that Ellysa and the little one will get their residence permits, instead of three months that is normal in the Netherlands. Apparently the local IND office doesn't have a backlog like most of the Netherlands. So that is very good news! As soon as I knew, I booked the tickets, so she could come here in 3 weeks' time. Of those 3 weeks, today only one week is left. She flies, 29th of October.
Ellysa's parents, however, wanted them to stay till Chinese New Year, end of January. Now I never intended to give them that, given the way Ellysa suffers over there, but until 2 weeks ago, everybody - including me - thought their residence permit would come no sooner than December. So Ellysa's parents were angry that I suddenly was planning to book tickets to get them home, and out of there, in only 3 weeks. Well I (or rather Ellysa in my name) bought some gifts, to show that I did understand that it was all very sudden an that they would be shocked. Some cloth Ellysa's mother wanted to make clothes, and some picture frames with pictures of Ellysa and the little on in them. It worked and, albeit reluctantly, they accepted their early departure date. (End of January they thought... That's 3 more months! They crazy??)
So that is all the good news. Now the bad stuff. Fair warning, It's pretty heavy. Still, I would be thankful to anyone who would read it anyway.
In the mean time, already starting the moment Ellysa was back in Indonesia, her emotional state has been deteriorating. Fast. She erected an emotional wall around herself, trying not to feel... even blocking her feeling of love for me and her little one. I suppose she needs that wall, to fend off the emotional blows she receives from her family (mostly form her mother). But it doesn't take a psychiatrist to realize that that cannot be healthy. She is now doubting herself, doubting whether I made the right decision for myself to marry her or not, thinking she isn't good enough....
I am at my wit's end. I keep reminding her at every opportunity that she IS a good person, that she can hold it till then, that she should not listen to her mother, that is it only a few more days and it will all be better when she is here... But I don't seem to reach her anymore. Half the time she is not online, because of her mother is angry once again, so she doesn't dare. The day before yesterday, it was because Ellysa forgot to close the thermos can. I swear, if I didn't know better I'd think Ellysa's mother is trying deliberately to break her before she has the chance to fly here. But the truth seems to be that she simply has no sense of empathy for Ellysa. She really doesn't see her pain.
Every day I pray and meditate. But... Ellysa is doubting that she will make it. And that is scary, because, she has been there before. She knows what it takes to push her over the edge. So when she says that.... And there is nothing I can do.
And there is nothing you guys can do either... except pray for her safety and their arriving home with me... So I want to ask you....
Please pray for her.

I know I haven't been on FA for a long time. Sorry about that. Just been really busy.
I am now married, and we've moved into our new apartment. We still don't have internet, I've now got my mobile phone tethered. I will give you guys more news and maybe a couple of pics if my wife agrees, later. Right now I just want to let you guys know I haven't forgotten about you, and that I am busy, but doing quite well :)
See you later all!!

MSc Thesis and trip to the airport
Posted 12 years agoSo last Wednesday I handed in my Master Thesis report. Only the presentation left, which will be all the way on July 2nd. The prof is abroad until then.
This afternoon i will borrow the my mother's boyfriend's new car (great guy, that!), and go and pick up my two sweethearts from the airport.
FINALLY

FINALLY
I got an apartment!
Posted 12 years agoI mentioned in my last journal in passing that i needed to find a place to live. This is because where I live now, while luxurious for a student, is waaaay to small for housing a wife and kid. So i needed to find a place where i could house them.
And I did it! Pure luck, really.
it isn't perfect. It's got 3 bedrooms, but they're all pretty small. The largest one will hold a double bed, but you'd only be able to just walk around it in an L shape, and the two other room are less than 4 m2, i think. Also it looks out over railway tracks, and it catches a lot of sun, probably making it hot in the summer.
But hey, I found a place, while, if I crunch the numbers, i have to conclude that i beat the odds significantly, in finding something on time, where i could house my family. And we can always keep looking for a better place after we move in. My stars have really puled though for me (for us!) these last couple of years!
Friday, my ladies will arrive!! CANT WAIT

Two Important Announcements
Posted 12 years agoWell, important to me, anyway
I will hand in my Master thesis report about two weeks from now. Then sometime in June I will give my presentation. And assuming my work is up to standard, I will be Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from that moment. BUT I'm not stopping there! I've got a PhD position, so that with a bit of luck I'll be Doctor in (ideally) 4-5 years’ time. Not that I care much about the status of such a title. It is just that, well, I like working on a university better than at a company, and a PhD position is a paying job. Not a very high-paying job, but it is a 4-year contract.... A. FOUR. YEAR. CONTRACT. In THIS day and age!! Which means 4 years of financial security for me and my fiancé.
Did I just say 'fiancé'? Well, yes I did, and that's perhaps the biggest news.
Ellysa and her little one will come to the Netherlands again (on tourist visa), at the end of May, and on June 18, we are going to get married! She's now got all the documents, and has them legalized at ministry of foreign affairs, legalized at ministry of justice, legalized by the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta, and translated by an inaugurated translator. The city where I live has seen the papers yesterday and they have found them to be in order. God, that's a lot of work. More so for my sweetheart than for me. Except, of course, I need to find a bigger place to live now. >.<'
After Ellysa has stayed as long as she could on her visa, we will all go to Indonesia for a week, with my dad, for the wedding party there. After that I will go home alone, and apply for Ellysa and her little one’s residence permits. Which hopefully will come out in three months, so she could be home again just in time for Christmas. Permanently. The end is in sight!!
Oooh one month, before she comes!!
(PS: Kitt Mouri, you have a PM if you haven't seen it already!)

Hasrbo
Posted 12 years agoSent this to Hasbro. I seem to do this a lot, recently.
Just adding one to the pressure.
==========================
Dear Sirs
It has come to my attention that a lot of MLP content, mainly on YouTube is being taken down recently.
I must ask you to reconsider your recent policy on this, not only for the benefit of the MLP fandom, but also for your own benefit!
YouTube videos are an essential part of the fandom. Consider that if MLP related videos are taken down too often, people will stop making them. Many hours of work generally go into each video, and if people risk having them deleted, they will stop bother to make them. The fandom will become a lot less active, less lively, and people (makers and watchers) will forget MLP and move on with other ways of spending their free time. Especially in the off-season.
A lot of bronies are people with jobs and money to spend on collectables. When they lose interest in MLP, that will seriously hurt your merchandise sales figures.
Also consider this. You cannot stop people from seeing your episodes for free. BitTorrent is simply too accessible. You can't stop it, or 20th Century, Paramount, Disney or any of the other big names of the film industry would have done it by now. All you can do stop is the non-profit MLP-fun sharing community on YouTube. And that would be shooting your own foot.
It is the momentum of all the content uploaded on YouTube (and elsewhere) every week that keep the fandom alive and attractive to be a member of and to participate in in the off season and even lets it grow. Grow in the off-season! How many cartoons have that? I myself joined in the fandom in the off season, just after Season 2 ended. If you take the momentum out of the fandom on YouTube, your fandom will shrink, and ultimately you risk losing everything you have built up in recent years.
MLP means the world to me right now. It is helping me though a tough time in my life where I see the worst side of humanity gnawing away at my fiancee and I live 11,000 km away and can't do a thing to help her. I need the non-cynical FUN! But it is the fandom however, mainly on YouTube, that helped me though the off season. I would have sought my distractions elsewhere without it, and might not even have remembered to come back for season 3.
There are so many Bronies with similar stories. MLP was the seed of something great that makes the world a better place for so many people, and allowing YouTube content to flourish was the water that made the seed grow. Don't kill it now, nourish it.
Please reconsider

Embarresment to Boy Scouts all over the world
Posted 13 years agoSent this to the Boy Scouts of America. Dunno if they'll read it, but maybe it will add one to the pressure.
===========
Dear Boy Scouts of America
It was on the Dutch national news today that in many parts of the Boy Scouts of America organization, gays are not allowed to become a member. I myself have been a Boy Scout here in the Netherlands for 10 years. I used to be proud of that. But now I am embarrassed to tell any of my American friends.
I have even been an adult volunteer for a while, as a leader of the youth group. In that role we have a profound effect and on, *responsibility* for the upbringing of these children. What do you want to teach them? Are you not now teaching intolerance and disrespect? That goes against the core values of the Boy Scouts that I have grown up to be proud of!
But now I am embarrassed to call myself a Boy Scout.
Come to your senses. This is the 21st century. Discrimination against Gays is a harmful, even to your youth members you aim to protect, as it will prohibit them to become responsible and ethical members of society. It is not of this time. Do something about it.
Regards,
Pieter vV

On my way home, driving in Jakarta
Posted 13 years agoWell, I'm typing from Dubai Airport now. On my way. Got more than 9 hours to kill here today. >.< Well, that made the ticket over 150 euro more cheap. Easy money in a way.
It was a good visit. The little one only stayed with us for one night. Officially she couldn't stay with us because she had a cough and a running nose. I'm told she usually gets a cough when she eats too much cake and pastries... Which they kept giving her anyway.
But at least Ellysa and I got to stay at an apartment, and not with her parents. I would have gone mad if I had to stay in that house again. But this time we got the privacy we wanted and the room to let our relationship grow. But I do regret hardly having the little one with us. The little one wanted to stay with us too. We did visit her daily, though.
I also learned how to drive in Jakarta! I'm a little proud of that, I must say. Not that I could not drive before, I have a driver's license for over 9 years. But in the Netherlands, we drive in the right side of the road, and there are rules, many many rules, that are observed very well. In Jakarta they drive on the wrong side of the road, and there are no rules. People even ignore the lines that mark lanes. You want to get onto a busy road? Then you basically push the nose of the car slowly into traffic if you think the next car can stop, and then hope they are paying attention. Which, surprisingly, they usually do. And the motorcycles? They are like ants. EVERYWHERE!! And here are potholes, bajajs (3-wheeled mini taxi's) and people pulling karts. Also, Ellysa's family car (Toyota Kijang) is quite a bit bigger than my dad's, which didn't help. It's sort of a crossing between an SUV and an MPV. Except the Kijang has been around since long before either acronym was invented.
But with Ellysa's guidance and co-driving I eventually got used to it.
Saying bye bye was not easy, as usual. But not nearly as bad as last time when Ellysa had to go back to a home where she really really didn't want to go back to. But with a little bit of luck she can move in with me before this year is over.

Off to see my Sweetheart again
Posted 13 years agoHey y'all
I'm done packing, and I'm actually finished 15 minutes ahead of time, so I can write this journal. I will visit Ellysa. We will live in an apartment with the little one this time. Thankfully, cause I don't fancy living with my in-laws again, I came home with quite a hangover and literally about three pounds lighter from stress, last year.
Everybody, can you cross your fingers and help me hope Ellysa will pick me up from the airport alone tomorrow? I want that first moment with my love alone, and not with mother in-law there to be the 1st thing I see when I arrive. Ellysa isn't sure she can stop her mother from coming.
I can waaaait to hug my sweetheart again... And I'm looking forward to spending time with the little one again too. She's growing up and after her visit to the Netherlands last summer, you can sometimes tell she misses me too.
It's time now to put on my coat and close the suit case (which is still gonna be a bit of a trick...!) and catch the bus

Congratulations USA + end of antibiotics treatment
Posted 13 years agoI was trilled to see on the news website the headlines that Obama was re-elected. I know it's not my country, but the choice of president undeniably has repercussions all over the world. And you choose the Harvard graduate who choose to serve the community for a limited wage over the mediocre guy who just wants to get rich and powerful and calls that a service to the community.

In other news, they just removed the IV from my arm, the antibiotics treatment is finished. Today I will go back to my apartment, and tomorrow back to work, or the day after that. It depends a little on how my apartment looks. I didn't think I'd be gone for more than 3-4 days when I left, but it turned out to be more than 2 weeks! My plant has probably laid itself lifelessly down on by carpet, and I don't want to think about what my refrigerator will look like! >.<;
But my lungs are nice and quiet, now. Have been for about a week now, actually. But that's a good thing: after what is seemingly overkill on antibiotics, very often a relatively long period of good heath follows.
So I'll be back on track with my master theses research in no time, and with all the other plans that are connected with that. :)

Posted 13 years agoYesterday they let me out from hospital. I got a potable IV so i can finish the treatment at home, and once a day a nurse comes by to change the unit. My lungs feel quite good now, even though
I'm just halfway through the treatment. But that is good, in my experience a good overkill of antibiotics is usually followed by a long period of good health.
I'm at my mom's now. On one hand, I'm eager to get back to work, but on the other hand, I don't feel like going to the office/lab with the IV. When I went to the hospital, I was about to do measurements on CFL lamps, so there isn't much i can do from home. I'll do what I can though.
On the Indonesian front, it's hard to say from here, but things don't seem to be quite as bad as they were the last time the maids quit. Which... is only relative. I think it's mostly because Ellysa doesn't take her mother's taunts quite as seriously as before. Which in the case of her mother is a good thing, trust me.
I got a lot of drawing done too. Aside from Lani's piece that I finished, I'm working on the 5th installment of the "our future" series, which is coming along. I turned Ellysa's frown upside down with a teaser of that, the other day <3. And I've been doing a fun experiment, trying to figure out what my fursona would look like in MLP style. It's sort of a variation on making a pony version of myself, which a lot of ppl have done these past few years.

Hospitalised, and tidbits
Posted 13 years agoWell the bacteria that have taken up residence in my lungs from time to time start to protest for a regime change. The did so last week too, but being the cruel dictator that I am, I contacted my general (the doc). The General advised to take no chances so he ordered the cavalry (antibiotics per IV) to to crush the opposition before the protest (infection) can become an up-rise (pneumonia).
In other words, I'm in hospital again, but it looks like we're in time to stop it from becoming too serious. The most annoying part is that I'm working on my Master Thesis right now, and any delay now will directly lead to a delay at finding a job later, and hence my sweetheart will have to live in Indonesia that much longer as well. Which is not only hard for Ellysa, but also bad for her child, since Ellysa's mother really creates a bad enviroment. On top of that, the maid in Indonesia has suddenly quit her job 2 days ago, making life for Ellysa that much more difficult, at least until they can find a new one.
In all, not a very good weekend.
At least my Thesis work is going alright. Just gotta get back to it again, asap. And I got time to draw now, with my trusty tablet pc setup: http://i740.photobucket.com/albums/.....ps3426b961.jpg  So that is good, at least!

A thanks and some News
Posted 13 years agoSorry about the downer of a journal (on DA) a few days ago. Still I'm thankful for the comments on that journal. Thank you.
Ellysa and her little one arrived home safely. Ellysa's mother is very angry with me now, because we weren't online on skype all day, every day with her. I know Ellysa and I do that when we're not together, but who here doesn't understand how that is not the same thing?? (Especially considering the mountain of stress she often brings to Ellysa and the rest of us when she is online). We were still online for several hours, most days. I'd say that should be enough for her to keep in touch with her (grand) daughter. Anyway, it's better she is angry with me than when she is angry with Ellysa. Ellysa has to live with her. For me it's inconsequential.
Our relationship grew and it all went very well with the Little one. I´m really happy we did this. Our dreams came a lot closer to becoming a reality this summer.
Monday I will start work on my Master thesis. This really is the home stretch, after this I will be Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. That is such a mouth-full, that has to guarantee I can get a job! But let's not get ahead of myself, I still have to work 7 months minimum to achieve that. I hope I can arrange to go to visit Ellysa again around Christmas. My Master thesis is with the same company again as my internship. This means I already know the place and the people, so that will give me a bit of a flying start. I hope that I can finish this in a timely manner and then find a job... then I can start working on letting Ellysa and the little one come here more permanently. :)

Landed!
Posted 13 years agoGod it feels soooooo gooooood to hold her in her arms again. And what has the Little One changed! Really no longer a baby, but a walking talking tod, living fully in the here and now.
So they are here now, laying on bed, making a start at sleeping off their jet-lags. Their journey was safe and peaceful. The Little one only cried when the plane was going down because that hurt her ears a little. The only bad thing is that Ellysa didn't get to sleep at all.
Right now it's 10:30pm, and I'm eating dinner alone. Ellysa can't be bothered to wake up to eat. Which I can forgive her rather easily, since she has been awake for about... Ooh, I think 41 hours. >_< Poor girl. Still, she says she's home now. And when she does wake up, hungry, the dinner I cooked is only a microwave-heat-up away for her.
I sometimes think she is a little like FlutterShy. Very timid and soft spoken, seemingly passive. But when it comes down to it she is strong and competent and really pulls through. And today is not the first time she has shown that side of her! Now if only I could get her to believe that! (see what I mean? Just like Fluttershy.)

Internship, and one week from today...
Posted 13 years agoToday I finished my internship. Got a good grade too! Beforehand I was pretty worried my health would slow me down, but it didn't. Still, I slept around the clock for 2 nights, every weekend, so working 40 hours + twice a day 40 min on the bike is about max what I can do.
On to more important news now though: in the next few days I'll be buying pampers and a lot of other baby related stuff, 'cause.... one week from now, I will pick up Ellysa and her Little One from the airport! (so no, we're not pregnant =P ) I'm really counting the daaaaaaayssss!!!
But my sweetheart is very nervous about the flight. 2 times 8 hours is quite something to do with a... quite vocal 3 year-old. A few days ago she had a dream about it. And in that dream... It all went quite well!! Which we take as a good omen.
GODDDD I CAN'T WAAAIIITTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(oh, and I'll be posting the 3rd one of the series soon too. Incidentally, we'll be making this one a reality soon!)

One month from today
Posted 13 years agoI can't believe I haven't written a journal about this before!
At first I was planning to go to Indonesia again this summer. Because we'd predicted that taking the little one to the Netherlands would be difficult. But when my dad told me that when she is a little older, it will probably not be much easier, I started thinking maybe it is better if Ellysa came the the Netherlands this summer.
So Ellysa and I have been working behind the scenes on a visa for her and her Little one. We were lucky too. Because the day after I bought the tickets Ellysa's mother decided she didn't want Ellysa to take the little one. But I had just spent about 1900 euros on plane tickts, so she waass toooo laaaatttteeeeee!! *sticks out a big fat tongue to mother-inlaw*
At home, Ellysa has to compete with her mother for the little one's affections. Her mother has been seriously undermining Ellysa's mother-daughter relationship by making Ellysa go to her shop every day (including weekends) all through 2011 and by taking over sleeping besides the little one at night too. If it was painful for me to watch while I was there last Christmas, I can only imagine how bad it must have felt for Ellysa!! Especially since she got blamed for the state of her mother-daughter relationship too. Somehow Ellysa's mother thinks 3 hours a day should have been enough to maintain a good mother-daughter relationship with a 2-year-old. *bangs head against wall* >.<
Anyway if Ellysa were to come alone without her little one, after being away from each other for 6 weeks there will be nothing left of their mother-daughter relationship, and it would be cheaper for me to buy Ellysa a hangman's noose.
But in the prospect of her granddaughter going to the Netherlands, apparently Ellysa's mother has (more or less) seen the light and since Christmas Ellysa has been staying home a lot more, which means her relationship with the little one has improved considerably.
One month from today, July 30th, I will pick her up from the airport for a 6 week visit
Ellysa and my mom really want to meet too, since my mom has been just a HUUUGE support for the both of us for the past 2 years!!
Also, this means we will have fulfilled our second wish: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7394573

Internship and semi-poofing...
Posted 13 years agoTwo weeks into the internship and at least 3 decelerations that I had to sign to promise I won't sell any military secrets to the Russians later... Ah, well that's what you get when you do an internship with a company that builds radars for naval ships. I doubt I've actually seen any secrets so far though.
Anyway, so far I like it. The first week was a little slow, partially because I just started reading background info about the various tasks that they have in store for me, and partially because they were refurbishing an electromagnetic anechoic chamber, which meant the lab smelled of glue, and I would get trouble breathing within 30 sec. *remembers the smell and waves the imaginary glue fumes away form his nose*
It looks like next week I will start measurement in a sort of reverberation chamber to see what an antenna picks up of radio frequencies that it is not designed to receive. I think it will be less than is usually assumed, for certain types of antennas. Looking forward to that!
Basically I have to work 40 hours a week. I can choose my own works schedule but the plant is open between 7am and 7pm, and I like the freedom it affords me. The only thing that I don't like it that I feel like I'm only working, eating, taking care of my lungs, and sleeping. And not much else. I can't see my sweetheart online much, because in the morning she is busy with her little one, and in the evening, after the little one sleeps, her internet connection mysteriously and oddly consistently stops working, lately. :( But I savor the times when I can see her. And I call her during my lunch break.
Anyway, that is the reason that when you guys post something that you would normally expect me to comment on, I might not have, lately. I still keep an eye on this place, but as commenting always takes up most of my FA-time, I need to be very selective. It is very difficult for me to get 8 hour nights when I work 8 hours, though the 2nd week was not nearly as bad as the first. So maybe I might get more talkative again over time.
Time now to start doing my lungs, and go to sleep. Nite guys!
[edit] Oh yeah, that oral exam I mentioned in my last journal, I got a 6 out of 10 for it, which is a pass! The academic in me isn't too happy with only a 6, but it sure is convenient that I don't have to follow a course next to my internship or thesis later, that would be very tough. But since I don't have to I can now 100% focus on the internship and thesis!

Internship... ON THE HOME STRETCH
Posted 13 years agoFinally starting the home-stretch to my master's degree tomorrow. Its' a 3 and a half month internship, and after that my thesis. (this Friday will be hopefully be my last oral exam, so I will be finished with all my courses.)
I should be finished woth everything by the end of next academic year. (otherwise I will run into trouble with my internship)
FINALLY!!!
I will be doing my internship with Thales Nederland. I wanted to do it with Thales UK at first, but my contact there, after saying she would get back to me that same day, subsequently stayed silent for a whole moth, in spite me trying to contact her almost daily. I mailed, called and even called her cell phone! Turns out, I heard via-via, that she had an international intern last year, for whom she had done a lot of work to get budget for, and then he didn't show up. She had such an hangover of that, that she didn't want another international intern. Now that is fine, but she could have told me so, instead of wasting my time and letting me hang for a whole month >:(
BUT i got in here in the NL easily enough, and it is just 30 minutes on the bike, and if all goes well I will do my thesis there too, in the same area, which will give me a running start. And I might still do a 2 week exchange program with a uni in the UK to get that little international note on my CV that I wanted too. And I will get paid too. Not much, but hey are not required to pay me at all, so I'm quite happy with that. That will help with my student loan (or with getting my Sweetheart here!)
I'm exited to go there tomorrow, (if not a little nervous.)

Angel Day
Posted 13 years agoToday is Angel day. Or, more accurately, it's the 2nd anniversary of Angel day.
Angel day was the day, 2 years ago, when I sent Ellysa an email again after years of silence. And it is the event that started our relationship. We call it Angel day, because Ellysa says I've saved her life. (If you don't know what I'm on about, this journal here tells the story: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1942662/ )
I know I haven't written a journal yet about my latest visit. There is a reason for that, but I will do that soon.
Happy Angel Day, Ellysa!!!
