Foam - Game Development Update 4
Posted 11 years agoI believe the tedious or conceptually difficult parts of the games coding is behind me now. I stayed up late for the 3rd night now with very little sleep and got build 1.7.6 pushed. The only part of the game that I haven't even started working on in some form or another is boss fight coding so that to me is the only challenge left that I am aware of at this time. The rest I think should be rather easy like tuning player controls, adding game mechanics, and beautifying things up graphically with effects. It should be plug and play with standard enemies when the animations are done. I get into the bad habit of doing a lot of debugging as I add stuff which slows things down a bit.
Here's whats working now:
Spawning baddies, fish, power ups, and items works.
Collision code with baddies attacking player.
Collision code with player attacking baddies such as charge and sonar attacks.
Collision code with eating fish, collecting power ups, and collecting items.
Friendly NPC or tag team AI, Jellyfish AI is done.
Struggle slots system with struggle overlays and animations.
Player actions like charging, swimming, jumping, flipping, and struggling.
Player character (skin) and baddie animation loading system.
Baddie and player health, player air and arousal with their power ups modifiers and linked actions.
Title or start screen, menu switching, saving and loading game settings.
Fixed most random crashes due to multi-threading, haven't had a crash for a long time now.
Some of these things have been working for a long time now but I haven't really reported them so I decided to list them above. The last build was Version 0.1.7.6 - November 15, 2014 but because there isn't much to give testers yet It wont be mailed out. Please give us some time to add more content.
Development log file from start to 1.7.6 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.....oam_devlog.txt
It may be obvious from the log start date that we are nearing our 1 year anniversary (oh god why are we so slow). Well in my defense of the time frame vs progress I've had to make an engine from scratch and it was only really worked off and on for 57 days so far.

Foam - Game Development Update 3
Posted 11 years agoI was set back a whole month due to moving from one city to another. Around about the same time the other people on the project also were busy with new jobs and other real life stuff. Although almost nothing got done on Foam programming wise for the last month or so, the engine it uses did have some minor changes/bug fixes/improvements, so not a terrible loss of time.
Thank you all for being patient with us, I will be getting back to work on the game in my spare time.

Foam - Game Development Update 2
Posted 11 years agoWe have continued to work on Foam however it has been much delayed for various reasons. But do not worry we plan to keep at it until a working version open to public is out. Beta is planned to release late this year or early next year depending on our real life situations you know things like our education, family, and work. Thank you for your continued interest in the project.
The majority of the work up until now has been revising level graphics, debugging, and game engine coding. Because this work is mostly all back-end and hidden from view we don't have much to show off. However Here is a zip containing a mpg video file quickly showing how the game will be played. Many of you have already seen these mechanics in various screenshots, streams, and older videos so I apologize for the lack of improvement over old content.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.....hanicsDemo.zip
The video shows the sonar, charge, and jump mechanics as well as how the view follows the player. It also shows that fish may be eaten automatically when in range to regain some health. Air is used to power the sonar ability which does damage to enemies. Air slowly depletes underwater and is recharged rapidly by either item pickups or surfacing. The charge attack does some also damage but is mostly used to temporarily stun enemies. You may have a friendly AI follow you which will also attack random enemies, act as a meat shield, pickup items, or in general aid you in your adventures. Jumping out of the water is more than just for fun, you can use it to avoid enemies at the surface or collect items in the air, complete mission objects, unlock hidden content, or attack air based enemies. The view will zoom out slightly and pan towards your direction of motion, you spend most of your time centered in the middle of the screen. Increasing your speed through a level increases the difficulty as enemies and items move faster but it allows you to jump higher as well as complete time based levels or speed challenges. Items collected either upgrade you directly, provide short status effects, increase health, recharge air, lower arousal, or are stored for use in the shop later. Not all items are good so watch out.
I am keeping my mouth closed on adult content for now, don't want to spoil it!
PS: When people on the alpha mailing list are getting versions then you can expect to see open alpha versions with limited functionality being released a month or so after to public testers.

Foam - Game Development Update
Posted 12 years agoI am currently sitting in my hotel with a old netbook (with a tiny screen) as the floors in my house are being replaced due to water damage. Because I have nothing better to do (other than college work and sleeping / eating) I am writing code.
Foam was 90% coded on GM8 but due to my need to be slightly professional and the fact that I needed something slightly faster, more flexible, and more portable across operating systems, I have started to code it from scratch in Java.
I am currently using Eclipse IDE configured for Java 1.6, the reason I'm not using 1.7 is due to compatibility issues with older systems especially Apple's Macintosh OS's. It's not that hard for me to switch but so far it doesn't give any performance improvements only security and language feature related improvements... So I will stick to 1.6 for now.
The skeleton of the game written so far runs well on Linux (Tested on Ubuntu and Mint), Windows (XP, Vista, 7), and OS X. That's the super obvious hint that it will be made to run on all of those OS's. It will be using LWJGL with Slick (the same libraries that Minecraft uses). I will be taking advantage of OpenGL and OpenAL.
I am not really suppose to say anything on the graphics front of the game but FallenArts is also working on something new and improved. It will add a lot of flexibility to the games graphics which should complement the change over from GM to Java.
So yes that's the good news, bad news will be this is going to take a while being that I'm in college so split time.
PS: I did consider C# and even messed around with it but I really prefer the open source stuff I'm using now.

Game News: Fellarts just might be doing sprites for it!!! but ill confirm that soon after I respond to my zillions of notes. (If he does omg id better whip myself into shape programming wise.) I think I should open a donation thing so I could funnel some money his way as drawing is time consuming, coding? naw its just me messing around! :P
My art block is clearing might draw stuff again here soon :) but most likely to be on my Zevex account unless its fish, dolphin, seal, or dragon related then its here.
For the anon commish I will sketch it when I get back!
I for one welcome our crustacean overlords! Carb cycle, there is only one step and it is crab!

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.....0The%20Sea.exe
Discontinued please wait for next version... sorry.
Stopped working on it for a bit, as my brain deteriorates. It only has 3 enemies and they just spawn more every time you clear them. Instructions to play are now in the game.
This is unfinished, it wont work on windows 8 because... fuck u
Win 2000, Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7 , 32/64 bit

Struggle at math? Yes very much so, never will understand it (tell yourself that and you wont) yes I agree true tested, lie to myself that I will get it (this will work you will understand things you want to understand even if you actually cant) Reductionism? unfortunately yes but how else would you break down a world into parts without reducing the number of parts. Fuck you philosophers who disagree, sorry if it ultametly leads to a better life or doom its far more productive than sitting around not testing things and reducing them to simple concepts.
No I don't think numbers are real things, well we made up math to describe a world it just so happens to extend to explaining or describing things for which words fail and brains are unable to grasp fully ever due to limitations of evolution. Yes we did evolve please don't get me started. Oh if numbers are not real abstract objects what are they? I'm not a mathematician I am not qualified to.. shut ! they are approximations of the processes of reality. They are capable of making predictive approximate equations to describe systems but will always slightly deviate due to uncertainty of quantum mechanical (blah mechanics is the wrong word to use) not classical at all, anything but that! Abstract Abstract.
Perhaps self inducing schizophrenia will be more useful than damaging, well well conversations with yourself are a fantastic way to debug thoughts, unless you do not proceed in a controlled manner. If done incorrect will lead to insanity! What is that even?
I must really express the fact that I really am just "look up tables". What do you mean? I actually am a giant collection of look up tables which when accessed in a specific order give the illusion to myself and others of some sort of soul or intelligent being with free will. I am sorry I do not believe free will is a coherent concept. Randomness is not free will, its not free or will, so don't use quantum mechanics to argue free will. Classical approximation is all that is needed in terms of a large systems like the brain (operating with nuerochemical and electrical signaling at protein scales), in this case a Newtonian clock is actually very good at predicting brain states from previous states. This is not an uncertainty problem its a lack of information problem. No this isn't the electron looking deeper into it, I argue it is fundamental not composite like hadrons or mesons, leptons I do not think are a "lack of information problem". No extra hidden variables just uncertainty fuzziness inexact precise methods, reality works this way (I wish it didn't maybe we will find another way) currently makes most accurate predictions about things than any other field. Look up tables? yes big data structures full of abstract but discrete information. If you want AI don't network thousands of big processors together, network millions of stupid ones together. Its a game of picking cards. This card now reads a order of construction for words in this sentence, of which are accessed from cards of words which have cards of letters which have cards of symbols , feelings, connections to other card banks referencing back on themselves.
What is the unit of abstract? Not what is considered abstract, nothing its not abstract thats just our "I don't know what to call it" or "Its more complicated underneith lets just Black Box It!"
What am I? easy, doesn't matter, where will I go? What is most important thing I should do?
Limited existance, only can live through others after I am gone, Spread ideas, useful things. Teach
Be a scientist? or a teacher? be both? which first? is it important .. no might not be significant to entire existance of stuff in a universe but I will allow evolutionary baggage to trick me into thinking existance is preferable to non existance. If I was dead I couldn't make a decision about bieng dead or alive. Can you logically work your way through that? does logic matter? no, in context to us living things yes most important things ever.
Make the world a better place. (leave it only slightly more messed up than when you joined it.)

Posted 13 years agoFinally doing quantum physics unit yay! .. if only I didn't suck at math D:
I felt generous this month with the influx of customers and donated a bunch to various people. Congrats if you were the lucky ones, if you were not then oh god I'm such a horrible person D:
Haven't been drawing much but have used my tablet to do some of the homework for college, thought id also use it to help me design circuits! better than paper!
Along with my normal order of science books from various fields I took the time to order a few creationist books too (for the lols) I will however examine them and consider their arguments and see if they stand up to test but they are pretty much trophy books that I will rarely pull out other than to point out inconsistencies when people bring up the issues again and again and again and again ad infinitum.
I finished reading Unweaving the Rainbow and it left me in awe! It also gave me a few ideas for some programming projects and perhaps a thesis I might write up for machine learning or artificial reconfigurable neural networks. I am surprised Dawkins didn't try to make connections or speculate on information carried on the Y chromosome of human males as is analogous to the "Y" like chromosome carried by female birds which has a purpose related to passing down genetic information only for one sex (the females in the case of birds). This resulted in birds evolving with parasitic like behavior such as Cuckoos who lay their eggs in other birds nests so that they are raised by a different species.
I feel slightly inspired to start making video responses to topics but I have yet to actually do so I was going to do one on climate change and the earth but I just don't have the time and there are already lots of great videos out there, also thought I might do some on teaching electronics to see if I have what it takes to be a teacher or if I should just be an engineer... Those who cant do teach and those who cant teach do but I think a bit in between could work! (i dont actually follow that saying literally)

Tried out a tablet
Posted 13 years agowent to friends house used a tablet took an hour to get use to it, but once I did it was amazing, everything was so much easier and i felt like I was drawing like a pro. The pressure thing that lets you change line thickness as you draw is really nice and saves tones of time.. the ability to erase with a single button press rather than changing from brush to pen to eraser by clicking or shortcut keys feels so inefficient, the tablet is amazing! I could draw 10 times faster and make things look really nice and smooth!
I cant show you guys anything I drew because I didn't save it, I just messed around and drew various things with it. It was my friends sisters tablet shes a furry who draws stuff too but she doesn't know I'm a furry :P (forever alone) .
But I still not buying one because I feel like its cheating so ill be using a mouse for a bit longer lol

My mouse broke!
Posted 13 years agoFFFFFFFFff yes lol cause everyone makes journals about their tablets breaking so XD
A few days ago it started randomly disconnecting and had to be unplugged and plugged back in to start again. Today it just stopped and now is no longer recognized by any computer I plug it into to :(. It was an Optical mouse from 5 years ago.
So currently I am using a ball mouse by Dell that's 10 years old. It draws 1/5 less power and feels kinda weird but it seems to be working OK. It is less jittery than the optical one and less fussy about the surfaces I use it on. But being mechanical i worry it will slowly vary in performance as it wears out due to extensive use.
I use a mouse to draw everything I do! There is something nice about it, i guess because its a ball and has more inertia than the laser one it draws curves better! but is less responsible to quick movements and will slip and suffer from path errors. Hopefully this will work until i get a replacement laser, if i find it works better for drawing ill modify it to last longer and take good care of it!
IF THIS ONE STARTS TO FAIL ALL I HAVE LEFT IS A 12 year old mouse that runs on D-Sub serial :( it only has 2 buttons and no scroll wheel :S

New Journal "read the word Journal with frence accent"
Posted 13 years agoOk so ive been distracted by learning things, so time has passed. Currently my face seems to have some weird growth on it, its the same colour as my hair and appears to be somewhat similar in structure but different in its thickness and flexibility. I did a burn test of it and it also seems to smell the same as my hair when I burn it so I am going to say with about a 90% certainty (0.90+/-9) that it is infact some form of primitive hair.
The main problem is this "hair" which I will give the name "Uncertainly But Probably Hair or UBPH for short" is that it is growing into my mouth area obstructing my breathing (i breath mostly thru my mouth because my mouth is wide open all the time due to my brain being zoned out. The UBPH must be prevented from continuing its relentless march of progress (into my mouth area). Being that it's so closely related to the rest of my hair I hypothesize that it will stop growing some time after my body dies (not immediately tho) so my first option in solving this UBPH crysis is to commit suicide. The alternative option is to use a theorized device predicted by Diracs equations called a Raise Heir or Raze Her or Razor. Unfortunately my hunt for such a mystical device is fallen short as of this moment. Option 1 is looking more and more feasible.
I have to write lab reports now :(
bye
