Can we just take a moment to appreciate the Mastah piece that is Split Second?
I play maybe one game a year and its usually not a a big 60$ triple A title because I usually feel like these games require me to invest a large chunk of time or money to truly get to the meat and enjoy them (not to say they arent good, Im just very casual lame gamer so Id much rather have games I can hop in and out of)
recently I went back to play Split Second because Its a game I played at 2012 (2 years after its relelse) and was really enjoying it back than, when other similar games such as blur came out that were fun but always felt more like a brawl than a car game (not to say its a bad thing, but more to say its a hard balance to keep you both engaging in actually racing as oppose to just want to pick up powers to ruin our friends day)
I started playing Split Second again last week and its still just so amazing, its a car game where you feel that your goal is both to win the race and to screw every1 over because your powers dont just screw with people, almost any thing you activate changes the map, your first, second and third lap all can take place in a different area depending on which stuff ppl activated along the way, its like instead of trying to pick up a gun and trying to shoot at a target, its backwards, your targets literally run into you bullet and you need to make sure to hit the trigger at the right moment.
theres something inherently boring in a car racing game and that is that you usually race more against the track than you are against the other racers, you always feel like you should have better turnes to shave a few seconds off or in order to pass the person in front of you.
But there also arcade car games where your control isnt top notch and the point is more about doing some other stuff rather than worrying too much on the person in front of you, shaving seconds etc'
when you combine the two thats where you get the issues
try thinking of it like fighting games such as DBZ and Street fighter.
street fighter is essentially one of the op fighting games out there, every character is its own language that you need to learn and you must learn them all in order to understand how to best utilize your tools, its very hard for casual player to really sink their teeth into a game like that because the learning curve its a pretty harsh one.
DBZ fighting games (except the recent fighterz) are pretty bad, most, if not all, characters have the same layout with more or less energy pushed into them, the tactics are usually the same, you usually just wanna spam some stuff and even on the higher levels nothing amazing game-play-wise is really happening, these are games that are to please the fans of the show first, and somewhere down at the last spot they got the whole "oh yeah its a fighting game" point.

its very hard to combine your most realistic goal with your desire to make it fun but still keeping the excitement in one place.
I feel this is where Split second really shine
there is something incredible about driving a race while avoiding car parts flying at you, explosions and giant airplanes that are crushing at you while you have to drive between the debree that is shooting out.
while not having a system that is too punishing if you yourself get hit by it, it keeps you on your toes and makes you wanna push to the end of the race even if youre not first because all these powers and triggers only really have any point behind them if youre not first in the line (reasons to why mario kart have the blue shell installed in them)

the game is something like 15-20$ on steam and probably will be way lower once a sale season hit steam and I highly recommend anyone who likes the whole idea of getting into a race and after less than 4 seconds already have giant explosions at your face that get your Adrenalin pumping to go try it out.

there are some misses with the game as its not really perfect in any way and its probably because its the first one where it ended with the obv desire to make a second one (that never saw the light so theres only 1 split second :( )
some of the race aspect is a bit wonky, turning your car is a bit awkward and you ai competitors have this strange thing all car racing games have where your enemy cars are magically fast even if youre on 600 mph and they crashed a second ago (like damn son what kinda engine you got there???)
the whole explosions and map changing aspect while fun, is a bit limited and you might find yourself in a 3 lap race where by the mid to end of the 2nd lap you exhausted the map interactions (tho unlikely, it happens) in this case youre kinda left with just regular little boom boom that go off like birthday sparks here and there.
with that said some maps have insane scenes from cities breaking in half to airplane crushing, some maps have, ummm... not much really, just a bit of silly stuff here and there
Some game modes just feel like they shouldn't be there like racing alone against the clock, why? for what purpose does a game all about destroying everything like Godzilla in car formation have to do with you playing against the clock in the most un-intuitive way ever?
multiplayer, I remember that playing against the ai was always really the WAY to play the game since you create an explosion happen and you have to than play this strange mini game against yourself to both witness and dodge the crazy stuff you activated, but when you play against others you would want to experience these kind of things together but this feels more like a solo adventure regardless of playing with or without friends online (that being said if you find 9 other ppl to play a race of split second with, thats where cluster fucks and craziness happen, only for the first half of the race since everyone is using anything the map can dish faster than you can even count)

I wish this game would get a squeal one day because it really deserve it and so many parts of the game just gives you this desire for everything to be refined, modified and made bigger badder and more explosive.

even with all its downsides I would still recommend it both because of its price and because of the awesomeness that it is, I finished it 100% on every level simply because of how fun it is

if you know of any games that are similar I would love to know, because as fun as Asphalt is with its somewhat of a brawl way of playing, its pretty much a piece of mobile garbage to the max times a thousand
