Single Solitary Political rant post (feel free not to read)
Posted 9 years agoNot that I expect anyone's reading these, but I thought I'd put this up there for review by posterity.
So, looking back at this last election cycle, what struck me is that:
You have the combination of multiple minority groups - those either intellectually incapable, actively disinterested or otherwise unable to meaningfully participate in political discourse plus the folks who are terminally disgusted with the status quo gridlock, combining together to RAGEQUIT DEMOCRACY.
I guess it remains to be seen what the fallout and damage to the system or political parties are and the aftermath as it plays out in global economic and diplomatic fronts, but I'm also curious as to whether or not those groups stick around in the political arena. In any case, I find myself deeply disgusted at their behavior.

Follow-up on last journal
Posted 10 years agoMy sweetheart and I tied the knot today. We moved up the plans and are going to have a larger ceremony later, but I'm proud to have
shadowcoon as my husband!
We were able to have several of our friends at the ceremony, and got surprised by some thoughtful things arranged for us miraculously in such a rush! I hope to be able to post links or some pictures soon.

I'm impressed by SCOTUS today
Posted 10 years agoThe marriage equality ruling stitched together the fabric of all the other marriage rulings in the past and stated as purely and simply why it is protected in two ways under the 14th amendment after having risen up from state action and how we as a nation had chosen to relate to marriage as an institution. Summing up the respondent's arguments as counterintuitive, they briefly address the 1st amendment concern in showing that state action is what is addressed, not individual responses.
The affordable care act decision (6-3) ends up looking fairly brave, but sensible. I think it boils down to 'when encountering an argument regarding a small subsection of a law where a reasonable reading of it counters the basic premise and intent of the whole law, it's reasonable to allow for other readings that preserve the intent of the law'. If that sets a 'dangerous' precedent, it's that as legislators, you shouldn't expect that introduction of a subtle poison pill into a law will hold, and that makes sense anyway - follow-up legislation could have done the same thing as the court here by tweaking or wordsmithing a few words used as the attack.
Anyway, it's nice to see that there hasn't been the total stratification of the court that I feared after a few of the earlier rather nasty spats circa 2000. New justices might have helped that, but I think a lot of it comes from time's intercession.

Ref sheet
Posted 11 years agoI am reminded that I really need to get a ref sheet. Started collecting some info, now I just need to find an artist who is willing to put up with an old curmudgeon with a pesky request and some money to burn.
I think I'll organize myself first, then go poking around my favorite artists to see who might be willing, as a first pass.

Character design
Posted 13 years agoIt may just be me, but watching furry fandom over ... a lot longer than I care to admit, I have to say that the freedom and exuberance that I see being expressed in character design these days makes me think...
What will the world be like when we CAN choose a lot about how we look and how we're put together, if just something as simple as this creative freedom in the furry fandom shows how huge and varied our self-expression that way can be?

You come up with a lot of ideas; if one doesn't work out, there's always another waiting in the wings. You often have interesting solutions to difficult problems. You're practically a one-person brainstorming session.
You are less interested changing the world than in dealing with things as they are. Unlike those who spend all their time trying to solve problems, you prefer to zero in on things that work and stick with them.
Intellectual
You are thoughtful, rational, and comfortable in the world of ideas. People find you interesting to talk to. You're the living embodiment of the saying "You learn something new every day." In general, those with a high score on the "intellectual" trait are employed in such fields as teaching and research, and are enthusiastic about reading, foreign films, and classical music.
You do not avoid abstract conversation, experimenting with new ideas, or studying new things. It bores you to stick to the straight and narrow of what you already know.
Curious
You like to get to the bottom of things. You're not content knowing what someone did; you want to know why they did it.
You don't simply take things as they are and move on; you're not content skimming along on the surface; you don't feel you're wasting time by digging for the meaning of things.
Warm
You have a genuine interest in other people. You're a natural host, and are always thinking about how you can increase the happiness of those around you. When friends have problems or are in trouble, you're usually the first person they turn to for aid and comfort. Scoring high on the "warm" trait suggests that you are among those who enjoy domestic activities — doing things around the house — and are enthusiastic about charitable work, helping others, and making the world a better place.
You don't always say exactly what you're thinking; you don't like the idea of causing anyone pain because of your criticism.
Aesthetic
You appreciate art, beauty, and design; you know that they are not superficial but absolutely crucial to living the good life. You have good taste, and you're proud of it. Those with a high score on the "aesthetic" trait are often employed in literary or artistic professions, enjoy domestic activities — doing things around the house — and are enthusiastic about the arts, reading, and travel.
You don't think it's pretentious to be moved by art and beauty. You're not one of those who believe it doesn't matter what something looks like as long as it does its job.
Creative
You are good at solving problems, coming up with original ideas, and seeing connections between things, connections that most other people miss. People with a high score on the "creative" trait often are employed in such fields as finance and scientific research, and enjoy avant garde and classical music as well as literary fiction and scholarly non-fiction.
You do not shun abstractions and concepts in favor of the concrete and tangible.
Competent
You strive to master everything you undertake. You tend to learn quickly and do not shy away from challenges.
You are not a "que sera sera" type of person, nor do you go easy on yourself when attempting to master a new skill or get a job done.
Astute
You are a quick study. You generally don't need to have things explained to you more than once. When presented with a problem, you will often have an instant understanding of where to look for the solution.
You do not take your sweet time when presented with a new task to complete or problem to solve. You don't avoid assignments that require you to learn new skills.
Accessible
You're comfortable expressing yourself in words and actions, with no self-censorship. You believe that if someone doesn't like what they see it's not your problem, but theirs. A high score on the "accessible" trait suggests that you have a lot of friends, socialize often, and enjoy rap/hip-hop music.
You don't see the need to keep your thoughts to yourself, or to have a zone of privacy that encompasses only yourself and a small circle of friends and relatives.
Understanding
You are willing to take the time to find out what's going on with other people, especially if they're in distress. You're a good listener, you don't criticize, and you offer unbiased, respectful, honest advice when it's requested. With a high score on the "understanding" trait, it is likely that you are enthusiastic about charitable work, helping others, and making the world a better place.
You don't feel the need to impose your standards on others or say things that, even though true, cause pain.
