Progress...
Posted 14 years agoAll commissions have made it to the sketch phase, except one late admission that I wouldn't directly link to FA's traffic. Three have been inked, and one is in the inking process. Three have been finished -- one badge that was exceedingly simple to do, and two rush jobs.
One commissioner had to step back after the sketch process for good reasons, and made payment to end the project on a good note though it was not required. I have to say -- payment and overall ease of reaching agreement has greatly improved since way back when I first took commissions in furry.
Though I started this process with only a handful of open slots, requests kept trickling in. My position being what it is, I have not had the luxury to turn any away, but these late additions do slow up everything. Should I be charging more to limit requests? Seems harsh...
A lot of local professional commissions have also slowed my progress. I apologize, but these take priority; they have more promise for future business. (Also, FA commission = 70$-80$; pro-commission = 200$ - 600$, so, I'm sure you will all understand.) It appears I am now down to one contract client. So this should not be much of a problem anymore.
With the holidays coming up, my graphic design work has slowed. Add some holiday breaks, and I should be able to catch up to my original schedule. I will have all but the newest commission inked and ready for the digital phase.
I want to thank everyone for their patience.
The plan is for me to be finished with all these as well as a few more personal images before New Year's.
Hold me to this.

It won't be a big money maker, but...
Posted 14 years agoOn occasion, I'll have someone request prints of a piece of art that was actually a commission of someone else's character. Always, I have rejected this offer -- since the rights to such artwork are not mine alone.
But this is a wasted opportunity. I would like to propose selling prints of other commissioned work with a few conditions:
1. the profit, minus the cost of the print (if any), will be split 50/50 with the commissioner.
2. the commissioner has to approve the sale to the buyer.
3. the buyer must agree to never resell the print.
Now... consider that this is only to my benefit. Anyone who commissions me is owner of any and all files used to make and sell prints themselves. I would essentially be a print-broker of sorts, and taking a rather large cut of the sale -- this would only make sense if those who have commissioned me wish to recognize my hand in making the artwork by being generous to my offer.
Any thoughts?

Update...
Posted 14 years agoOne badge/icon completed...
Another badge/icon into the digital coloring stage...
All three full commissions have been rough sketched; later I will going back at it to flush out the specific character details.
One late-addition full-commission has been added on, but I'm not touching it till I make real progress on the rest of the sketches.
The last week was completely lost due to other activities. But otherwise, I am pleased with how the materials have turned out thus far. I believe this means everyone else will like them...
Minneapolis Pancakes & Booze art party is a go this weekend, feel free to drop by if you're in town ($5 cover at the door, hope you're okay with nude women). After that, I'll be back into full commission mode... because I suck and never get the chance to celebrate Halloween anymore :(

Prints...
Posted 14 years agoI should have made this list public record long ago after answering the same question so often:
11x14-inch posters = $10 ($5 at the cons)
16x20-inch posters = $30 ($25 at the cons)
18x24-inch posters = $45 ($35 at the cons)
24x36-inch posters (may include .5-inch white boarder) = $60 ($50 at the cons)
All sizes are set for standard poster frames. This may require some re-design on the original images. If the adjustments are in question, ask, and I will submit a proof of what the adjusted layout looks like.
Note -- all my artwork is set up with spot-color, meaning I can change and adapt color schemes with VERY little effort. If you have a specific re-coloring request for a print -- let me know. Of course, if your color choices are mama-had-to-get-drunk-to-breast-feed-it ugly, I reserve the right to reject the request.
If you've seen my poster prints at cons sold for much less -- that was during my COSTCO printing phases, which I hope to never repeat. I apologize for that moment in my life -- I was weak. Today, I deal in are QUALITY prints. Ask around.
E-mail me if you are interested, or note me here on FA.
Thank you.

Opening commissions (4 slots for now)
Posted 14 years ago***UPDATE-COMMISSION SLOTS ALL FULL!!! [Thank you so much for the immediate response, I am both surprised and extremely grateful.]***
(In all cases, communication must be through e-mail [pseudomanitou-AT-gmail.com} so I have a record and a "paper trail" to work with.)
1. In all cases, specify from the very start if you wish for me to draw in a more cartoonish style, or a my stylized realism. State if you wish to have typography designed into the image or not. All artwork will be unsigned unless you specifically request my signature.
2. I will start the sketch process without payment. Once a sketch is shown and approved, I require half the total payment. No additional work will start before that half payment is received. If you do not pay, the sketch is mine and I will do whatever I want with it (including possibly 'vandalizing' the sketch to warn others of a dead-beat commissioner).
3. Once the first half of payment is received, I will make any corrections you require. IMPORTANT: we must get the details correct on the sketch -- once I start inking, corrections are difficult for me to make, and could become an added expense to you.
4. From there on, I will ink, scan, and digitally color the final piece. I will then submit a -small- preview of the final file and await the rest of my payment.
5. Once final payment is received, I will make any corrections required in the coloring and design, with exception -- I will debate any changes that I feel are detrimental to the overall artwork. But don't worry -- I'm not one of those types who are overly attached to their "children".
6. When all loose ends are tied up, I can e-mail you a final image at whatever size/resolution/file-type that can be handled. For additional money on full commissions, I can mail you the inked artwork, a CD containing all digital files used, and a few 11x14 prints. For badge commissions, a printed and laminated badge is included and will be mailed out for no additional cost, so long as the mailing address is within the US.
Prices...
$25 - Badges and profile-pics/icons will be about
(I will not do full figure on badges and icons. Full bodies are full commissions.)
For full commissions, the starting rate is $70, and climbs with any additional efforts I can see within the piece.
example of $70 effort: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6493594/
example of $140 effort: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6354195/
NOTE: if you give me more creative license to do whatever I want, the price will drop, despite whatever effort my final idea costs me. In all cases, I will negotiate final prices till we arrive at what we feel is fair. Once the price is approved, the price is set in stone ( I carve it on tablet in my office).
Anything involving nudity, sex, or fetishism is at my discretion. I've been remarked as 'rather tame' in most standards, though I will take anything as far as I see the need to. If you want symbolism of sex, sexual identity, or whatever -- I believe I can do a fair representation. If you want wank material to stir the passions of Rosie Palm and her five sisters, I'm not the artist you want. I'm actually kind of bad at drawing that kind of thing, in fact.
Additional projects...
I have done banners, logos, CD-covers, flyers, and so on in the past. In fact, that is my professional skill more than illustration. But each of those jobs are very specific and must be price quoted individually.
Deadlines...
I will do my best to create a work-flow that will wrap up projects in less than a month. Such a workflow is also depending on the commissioning party. If it takes a week to reply to e-mails; if it takes two weeks to get approval on a sketch; if it takes three weeks to receive payment -- that time is in addition to the month it takes. Any artwork that is time sensitive (for instance, a badge wanted in time for a birthday gift), will increase the price depending on the time given -- that includes projects wanted in a month. The extra cost is for lack of flexibility.

A glimpse of the bigger pond for us small fish...
Posted 14 years ago(First off -- there will be plenty of NSFW and/or extreme-WTF content in these links. You have been warned.)
I provide these links here as a reference -- NOT of JUST other artists/illustrators -- but of other professional fine artists and illustrators who have touched on 'furry' subject matter in many similar ways as the artwork on FA.
Whatever you have seen on FA has probably been expanded on by other illustrators to the point of reaching a high-functional commentary on life, humanity, nature, and the interactions of all in between. The in-depth thought some of these artists have given to the VERY SAME subject matter we centrally focus on, should put us all to shame. But hopefully, this will inspire a few on FA to do better.
Have a look; copy this list; spread word; prepare a new folder for your web browser bookmarks; maybe even take the day off to just sit with good food and the internet; and if you can gear yourself up for it -- contact them if you think they could help you pursue a career in art/illustration somehow (just don't be a creep about it).

Posted 14 years agoSome have asked, and it's not a small question. So I'll list this just once:

Bet you didn't learn anything from that. Please stop asking.
Thank you :)

Trade/Commission examples...
Posted 14 years agoI will be uploading some past examples of trades/commissions done by me.
If you have worked with me in the past, but I have not uploaded the artwork I did for you -- please take no offense. I have my reasons, and not all of them would be for the best if I had to explain them.
I will not be listing prices on these images either, as these images represent a significant time-span in my work, and prices have change -- and will continue to change.
What I hope many of you will take from the posted images is a good sense that I do not spare effort on my commissions or trades. They (usually) receive the same attention as my personal work.

Next step...
Posted 14 years agoVCL Gallery is gone. Moving on.
In freelance news, three event posters are in the que (repeat clients I enjoy, so they get priority). Two more art gallery events will reveal how many other similar responsibilities I will have. The last of these events is not until mid-October. I have no idea if there will be more art events -- I believe the Winter season will kill that kind of thing here.
Until I have these matters comfortably under control, I will not be able to take on commissions at FA.
But let me bounce some prices to get reactions:
badge: $30
full figure: $60
'complex' full figure: $100
two figures: $120
...anything else will need to be discussed.
Nudity and/or sexual themes are at my discretion. If you want wank material, you'd do better to commission someone else -- there are many artists far better at such subject matter than myself. I'm not opposed to violent themes, but I draw the line at "fetishizing" it. All commissions requests will be taken seriously, and if I reject the request, I will give a an explanation that will hopefully satisfy (because I will not argue it further than that).
...if you are feeling lucky, simply leave your character in my hands to make whatever subject matter I wish. I might consider a price reduction if you choose that option.
Let me know how that sits with you all.
Thanks.

Thanks.
VCL Gallery...
Posted 14 years agoThose of you who already know my name, know I have an old VCL gallery:
http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Pseudo-Manitou/
With the building of my FA gallery, the VCL gallery will come down. It's just time. The old artwork is TOO old, and there's too much of it.
Download your fill of it. By this weekend, it will be cleared.
This is your warning.
