100 Commissions: Let it Begin!!!
General | Posted 15 years agoYes thats right, you read that right. I am going to be taking 100 commissions. You can sign up starting now but understand that I do work in the order of when people sign up. These 100 commissions will be for a colored ACEO, or a finished Pencil piece that will more than likely be on an 8x10. Leave a comment here in the journal and then PROMPTY note me with the contract at the bottom of this journal. You MUST fill it all the way out as well as send me links to the character you will want as an ACEO or sketch. You MAY get a digital sketch but please realize that these are going to be a little slower go. I work faster traditionally. The master list will be in another journal to be posted soon so that everyone has a visual on where everyone is at in the cue.

General | Posted 15 years agoIm going to be honest, I'm poor. I need money and am actively asking the community for help. All I can offer is my art work. All I can give is my talent that I have. So make me an offer. Look at my original commission prices, find something you want, and make me an offer. Name your price and so long as its with in reason I'll do it. Make a post in your journal containing your list of holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple to really big. The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real-life things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where folks could get in touch with you.
Step 2
Surf around other lists to see who has posted their list. If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream for free--do it. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. I have checked between names and emails and matched up as absolutely best I can and have had my boyfriend look over the listing to make sure I didn't miss anything. Also work has been running me ragged, today is my first day with a little bit of time to try to start catching up. I am currently working on Sirfy's second commission before I start the totem commission for the wonderful

As I have been working through some of the last commissions that I have to take care of I'm realizing something. I'm underselling everything I do. What does this mean? I've rethought out how I am going to go about pricing everything. Before I was taking the number of hours that I worked on a piece *roughly* and then just minus 2 or 3 and then adding a zero and calling it good because I thought I would get more commissions if I kept my prices lower. The ONLY thing it has done is meant that I have given hours and hours away of free work. Even on the Lenzier and Carpaskin simple pose "sketches" that I have been doing. Each of which takes up to four hours to complete and I've been selling them at 15.00. This is a problem, especially when I am trying to keep a roof over my head, food on my table, and the lights on.
SOOOOOO From now on I am going to be doing the following:
Deposit of 10.00 ((unless it is a 5.00 sketch or chibi special))
+ hours spent. Period.
11.00 an hour on every piece.
5 hour piece = 55.00
etc.
This is the MOST FAIR way I can think of doing this that still gives everyone the quality they DESERVE and makes sure I can still eat at the end of the week.

An Odd Birthday and an Offer
General | Posted 15 years agoGreetings one and all! Today marks exactly one month of my being split from Joe. It's felt like months, maybe even a whole year has gone by due to the amount of busy that has been crammed in there. So much has changed about me as a person, my art has started to grow and flourish again *i promise ill find a scanner soon Oo* and today I FINALLY set up my computer down in Lacey. However, I also realized that I left my tablet up in Issaquah *DOH!*
So here's my offer:
Right now I don't know when I'm going to have all of my things in one place. I'm hoping by September. Well guess what, I don't want to wait that long to complete the orders that I still have back listed in my past journals and so many people waiting for art.
If you would like, and be ok with it, I will do a traditional piece in place of the digital piece you have on file. Obviously the lenziers will not be exact copy cut outs, but they will be as close as I can manage :) I want to get the art to you folks and you have all been SO GOOD in being patient with me.

A very Owed Explination

So i feel compelled to write a much owed explination of where the hell I have been for the past near month now. Why there had been no art posted, and it seems like I have simply dropped off the face of the planet. In reality this is not so.
I have just finally moved from Ellensburg after six long years of attending Central Washington University. I recently started work in Gig Harbor at Massage Envy *amazing place and people* and have moved in with the fiancees parents. Yah, I moved in with the soon to be in laws!
The reason for the lack of art has been a general lack of interwebs. The only computer in the house that runs the internet is the main tower and that one is mostly reserved for the parents and for Joe's younger siblings. So I have snuck onto the computer since they are all off and about doing numerous other things. Also, My tower is currently living in the kitchen... Which uh... Makes it hard to work on.... naughty art. Yah ouch. I havent even been able to finish poor Kynx's char sheet seeing as how Im still missing her few naughty bits close ups.
I am not trying to make excuses just trying to let you all know that I am in fact still alive.
In the meantime whilst at work trying to not slam my head into the desk after my thousanth call of "Hi this is Sylvia from Gig Harbor Massaga Envy "in the peppiest girliest voice I can muster, I have started a comic. Yah yah I know, you've all heard that one before. The best part is this time I actually have two pages already all drawn up and am currently coloring the first page on my compute!
"But Riven if you're drawing on your comic can't you finish my commissions?!" Yes and no. Life has been very busy and very chalked full of commissions for others for quite some time. I have been taking this settling and adjustin period of my life to finally do a few things for ME. Its helping to keep me sane and not feel like a complete and utter art whore. I adore you all though :D and very much look forward to life slowing down enough for me to get through my current waiting list. In the mean time please keep your eyes peeled and I will try to get some scribbles and the like up for you all so that you know I'm still alive XD

Transitions: Moving to Seattle
General | Posted 15 years agoThis weekend in Seattle really got me thinking about a lot of things. Mostly, where do I want to live. The short answer became, not Ellensburg. The other short answer is "in Seattle...somewhere." I have realized that the only way I am going to logically be able to do this is by simply picking up and moving over there. No I do not yet have a job though I have quite a few places to be inquiring into after this weekend, and I will be staying with Joe's parents over in the Gig Harbor area. I realized that at only once a month getting two days off in a row (maybe) I can not search efficiently for a job. Sure most places have apply online now a days. But what about the places that don't? Not to mention I am quite old fashioned in that I actually like to go in and shake the managers hand that way they can actually put a face to my name, and hopefully remember me well enough to want to call me in.
This move is not going to be easy. It is going to require me downsizing on a lot of things (yeah garage sale), earn funds for the move (once again yeah garage sale) but hopefully it will pay off in more than one way.

2. I will gain employment on the west side at a decent pay
3. I will eventually be able to move into my own apartment that I can make for just Joe and I and our pets. No room mates allowed XD
4. I will move up the ranks, or get into the gaming industry after being closer to it
5. I could take classes at Digi Pen
6. I could take classes at the art institute
7. I will be closer to Sam, Jules, Sara, Daniel, Helen, and most of my wonderful Solstice ladies
8. I will no longer have to have room mates
9. I will no longer have to work in a Deli or grocery store
The list goes on and on
10. I can eat Pho for lunch!!!!!
11. I can eat Pho for dinner!!!! XD
and once again the list goes on and on.

Reasons I want to leave Ellensburg
1. No way to advance in a job
2. Nearly no job opportunities in general
3. No job opportunities in the field I want *gaming, film*
4. Hostile work environment causing me constant stress and pain
5. Constant fatigue from a job thats not worth the stress
6. There are more cows than people here
7. There are probably more skunks than people here
8. Its too far away from most everyone I know *snugs her Sam from far away*
9. The only trees here have been planted by man.
10. Its a two hour drive to the nearest mountain....
and the list goes on and on....
What does this mean for all of my DA and Kashkikhan fans and friends? Well, after I quite my job at Fred Meyer in roughly a month, I will have up to 6 hours a day *once settled* to work on commissions and once again being able to build my world. Projects I have been loath to set aside trying to just stay alive and feel well enough to do the work that my job demands of me. THIS MEANS COMMISSIONS FASTER TO YOU! This also means that I will be able to finally advance my world, its forum, and hopefully get the models done in order to start selling figurines of them as well!
Well, Queen out for now, gotta go back to my crappy ass Deli job and its crappy people...
I will be on later this evening!

Set Pride Aside: Do what needs Doing.
General | Posted 15 years agoYah ever sit back from what you're doing and realize that somewhere since the last time you blinked... you lost around 6 hours? I just did that. Into that character sheet I've been working on. I've realized a couple of things. First, I always try to put my absolute best into my works *a point I already knew, bare with me,* secondly, especially when I am being paid for it.
You see, I am highly motivated by the notion that when I am done with that piece of art, that I am HOPEFULLY going to make the person do back flips in astonishment of how happy they are with what they have received, and that every penny they have spent on my art is going to be more than worth it.
I have now spent close to 10 hours on that character sheet since I last posted the lines. Yes, I spent another three hours after the two I had put into the line work, and then another... ok, well lets just say its actually more than 10 hours that I've been at work on this piece of art. Needless to say I am finding the results to be exactly what I have been looking for and quite by surprise. There is a sense of charactured realism to the way the gryphons fur looks that greatly pleases me. I can only hope the Rein will be just as pleased.
In the meantime I also realize that not everyone can drop 100 dollars at 10.00 an hour *roughly* for my art. And I encourage all of you to realistically look at your bank accounts and what you can spend on my *and other artists* art. Yes, most of the artist *including myself* use our art as a second or even a primary form of income that we GREATLY need to put food on our table. In fact I actually spent my morning and afternoon running around town looking for the local food bank. Because as much as my pride doesn't want me to admit it, my fiance and I need the help. We don't have enough money for food. None the less food that will give us enough energy and nutrition to get us through the day. So I bit my pride, loaded the kids *the dogs* into the car and we drove down to the food bank. I walked in head held high for as much as every part of my being wanted to be ashamed for having to ask for the help. For that I can only condemn those who DO abuse the system and those who DO associate all Food Bank goers with the stereotypes that have been laid on them.
After about an hours visit, and filling out paperwork, I went home with food enough to feed myself, my fiance, for around the next month and a half, maybe two. This takes a HUGE financial burden off of my shoulders. Which brings me to my next point... Why should food be such a burden? Even with working my arse off in the deli, and spending 90% of my "off" time at home working my second job on art, and I still barely bring in enough to pay for rent, utilities, and still be able to put Ramen and Pasta Roni on the table.
The economy here in the United States of America is bad folks, and its not going to get better any time soon. Now while I realize this has turned into a bit of a rant, please stick with me. I know I'm not the only on in the artist community who is suffering from lack of funds and trying to feed themselves and their families. Please please please, if you or another artist you know is having trouble NOTE ME. I would like to do a feature journal and set aside all Lenzier information in order to hopefully give you a bit of publicity if I can. I know that every little bit helps. The other thing you can do is also host your own Feature Journal to give more people publicity.
As an artist COMMUNITY, we need to help one another out in any way that we can. We are living in what essentially amounts to an aristocratic society where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and for all the Avant Guard and Bauhaus out there... well i don't see an art movement giving us an upswing any time soon. So please, I would like to host the first 10 artist who note me that NEED FINANCIAL HELP.
Also, if you do need help, get a hold of your local food bank. The people who work them are wonderful. Know that food stamps aren't a bad thing, they help you. Work the minimum wage jobs, flipping burgers and serving deli food if you have to. Now is not the time to have pride. Now is the time to work harder than the rest, stand out as the best, and prove that artists are not only talented people, but that we can out work all the rest in order to get done what needs doing.

A Month from Hell

-The School demanding money because I wasn't signed up for classes on time
-The School demanding more money once I was signed up.
-The School demanding a late fee for the class I got into late.
-The School demanding a late fee for paying late.
-My computer completely breaking down.
-Personal Womanly issues making me wind up in the hospital.
-Being heavily medicated due to said above problems.
-Being insanely depressed due to said above problems.
-Now ex friend of mine essentially "dumping" me because of my depression and medicated condition, and the decisions I made while MEDICATED.\
-That same friend fearing that I am going to end up as "Trailer Trash" because she doesn't like my fiance, and won't try to get to know him.
-That same friend berating me for being an absolute idiot and how dare I this that and the other thing.
-Complete loss of said friend...
The ONE good thing January brought me?
I'M ENGAGED to my mate of near 3 solid years, on and off for closer to 6. I love him dearly and if it weren't for him... I probably wouldn't be here after said above listings of shit.

Tablet Fund Update
General | Posted 16 years agoUPDATE: Funds are coming in slowly but surely and I thank you all for your patience with my getting these done. I will put an update on my progress with how much I have made thus far so you can all see how close my goal is for buying the new Cintiq. I figure go big or go home with this. I'm about to graduate and with that other tablet dead... Well I see no reason to just get the same thing that will fail on me again.
UPDATE 2: A tablet has been aquired from a friend to help get the rest of the digital commissions done. This does not mean that I am not selling the 10.00 commissions anymore. They are still available, as are now all other types of commissions.

My Own Iditarod Race
General | Posted 16 years agoGrowing up in Alaska meant that I had a lot of different hero's than most kids these days. Instead of dreaming to be an actress, or a favorite singer... I dreamed of being a Musher. House hold hero names in my home were Susan Butcher, Dee Dee Jonrowe, and Martin Buser. Their dogs and teams were what built my hopes and dreams. Unfortunately for me my parents bought a West Highland White Terrier instead of a husky. Setting my dream back a few years more than I would currently like.
When the movie Balto came out I was more than just a little ecstatic. After watching the movie my younger sister and I played dog team all over the house, yard and neighborhood. We even gathered up all the neighbor hood kids and any rope and dog harnesses we could find and built our own "teams". There was something about seeing an Alaskan legend brought to the big screen that made us kids proud. Even if we did know the real story instead of the one we saw. It was still magical. That art and posters, and t-shirts dominated my room for quite some time. That combined with a few great Disney movies and you had my dream of becoming an animator in the handbag...
Now lets fast forward a ways. I'm now 24 and in Ellensburg WA probably the most devoid place of anything that I knew as winter, and instead of the Iditarod... we have the Rodeo. The setting is not incredibly ideal, nor are all the characters. Tonight I watched the movie Balto again in hopes of rekindling some of what I used to feel as a proud Alaskan child growing up in the great white north, the last frontier. Instead of hope, I found that many of the memories I had of that childhood movie were tarnished. A certain wolf face kept plaguing me every time I looked at Balto. I Imagined all the Steel's in my life that had gotten in my way and all the serum I had dropped in the snow lost forever. Falling victim time and time again to my own Diphtheria.
What was worse was when I finally grabbed out my sketchbook in order to try to draw along with the movie. I can not tell you how saddened I was to see that my own art skills had surpassed that of the movies. trying to draw the same angles and have the anatomy match up. It was all wrong. Instead of feeling a sense of triumph at besting the animators who created the movie Balto I felt saddened. It was if another dream had slipped into the blizzards of the winter to be lost forever.
I said goodbye to the movie, closing my sketchbook on the original idea of designing my own dog sled team in Balto style of art, and goodbye to a lot of the memories that I had tied with this film.
I don't know if I will ever run in the Iditarod like I used to dream of as a little girl in Alaska. What I do know, is that I am now running a different sort of race. My Hero's are still those men and women that fight snow and ice, blistering colds, and danger at every step. They were able to push on and complete the race, and I know that I will complete my own...
A Sound Return to FA
General | Posted 16 years agoI will admit that as an artist and Fan of FA my participation has been severely lacking as of late. Then again.... I don't remember a time when it hasn't and for that I must truly apologize to the wonderful people who put together and run this site. I must also apologize to those artists that I watch and have not paid them nearly the attention they deserve with their many many posts over the last six or so months.
However, it is with great excitement that I would like to announce my regular return to this place. My gallery has had two postings in just as many days and I hope to post a third tonight on my third day back in a row.
I have received many new watchers and to each of you I say truly, Thank you. Your support, and favorites have shown me that this place can be very friendly and not quite as cold and lonely as I had originally anticipated.
