Socializing
Posted 4 months agoHello, FA! Oh geez it's been a bit.
Just wanted to touch base that I'm still around (primarily in VRChat and BlueSky), and I'm still floored that folks enjoy the characters and artwork I've gotten over the past few years! I owe it to you folks watching me to upload more art commissions - seems I'm about a year behind on this, uh oh.
I can't promise to make a new friend or even be a consistent person to chat with, but I stand by my self-diagnosis of being a good listener. Feel free to poke me for hellos and chats! Ask me something anonymously if you're on the shy side, I don't mind that either. https://tellonym.me/quintree
After visiting Anthrocon and meeting new folks (and getting belly rubs, hoh wow turns out I love that feeling), I can declare that furries really are awesome folks to get to meet, talk with, hear about, and learn from. This was my driving emotion to share this journal - even though my social battery will need introvert time to recharge, I adore getting to casually chat.
I'll tack onto this sporadic journal a question for you: Should I have a reference for Quintree that is "big/fat"? Thus far I've loved keeping me slim as default, then more indulgent art to make me happy can be tubby and beyond. What if he had a ref sheet where he was moreso 250 pounds instead of 200...

A perfect long weekend for this horse
Posted a year agoHello all!
For labor day this past weekend, I took a few days off work to visit family, and I was surprised by the amount of apple- and horse-related things I got to do and visit! Check out a few photos on my BlueSky post, if you wish: https://bsky.app/profile/quintree.b...../3l37m5kftcr2o
Thursday, I got to go tubing down a gentle river. That was probably the second or third time in my life doing so, and it was worth every minute of the 2.5 hours floating along on the sunny/cloudy day. Not even trudging out of the water early at the wrong spot kept us from having a good time!
Friday I was offered the choice to play disc golf or visit a farm with a few animals. My folks were surprised I'd rather visit horses for a tour of the rescue farm than play sports - until I reminded them horses are my favorite animal. I got to pet and feed PJ the horse, Snowy the pony, Early the donkey, and Shelby Ann the mule - and saw so many other equines! Each with a name and unique story, from a family-owned Amish work mule sold on desperate times to an improperly trained donkey who thought he was a 1,200-pound dog to a queenly 29-year-old work mule living her best royal life of retirement to a horse saved from slaughter by sending from Spain to the US... Whew. I respect and honor the work that farm's team (some of which volunteer!) to save and care for many animals who were turned away by every other rescue.
Saturday was either going to an apple festival downtown or picking apples at a local orchard - I chose the latter, hearing downtown would be crowded. The orchard wasn't exactly empty either, but we had plenty of time in the sun for good fun: Picking dozens of apples from seemingly endless rows of trees, firing rotten apples from an air-compressed cannon at some targets in the woods, taking a haybale ride behind a tractor, and of course tasting and eating as many apple drinks and treats they served. Mini apple pies, cinnamon-apple donuts, apple ice cream, apple cider, apple cider slushies... it was pure bliss, I tell you.
Sunday onwards was mostly spent with family going hiking, celebrating a relative's first birthday, and playing all sorts of card/board/video games such as Skip-Bo and Jackbox games. One Night Werewolf turned out a hit among relatives! Even if my poor grandmother couldn't keep up and didn't want to see any of her grandchildren "killed" for the game, heh!
Tomorrow I get back to work and it won't be easy for me to get back in that swing of things, but it'll come around.
Up next - who knows! I want to remember to use this site more than I have been for the past few months, including sharing artwork so stay tuned! My next in-person convention will be Carolina Furfare in October, then I'm making plans to travel to Midwest FurFest in December.
R.I.P. Dragoneer, thank you for your work building this online space and community <3

Next cons update
Posted 2 years agoI forgot to update my page here, but thanks to some last minute planning changes from a friend, I'm going to MFF this year! I'm frankly nervous about potential crowds, but I managed Anthrocon alright enough, so that should be all swell.
And if you're local-ish to my area, I hope you'll consider visiting me at my home convention Bewhiskered at the end of the calendar year here in NC!
Last little tidbit, I remembered to update my profile banner to the artwork
ArtieNuki drew for me. It's so dang precious, I love it!

Posted 2 years agoIt's a surprise to me, but I'll be attending MFF 2023! I'm nervous about big crowds in a small convention/hotel space, but I'll be with friends and will be keeping safe. Come say hello and don't let us part ways until we get a photo together!
If you live closer to my neck of the woods, I'd love to see you at Bewhiskered, in Durham, NC! Con dates are Dec29-31, which could be a struggle with scheduling OR lots of fun to be around furries at new year's. We just got a new hotel this year because we outgrew the original, inaugural hotel - expect somewhere around triple the number of furries :D
My FA page here now has over 1,000 watchers.... what. I don't have any celebrations nor raffles to share, just... thank you. Thanks for letting me share and indulge in being a soft horse on the internet, it is a huge treat and delight to be with you all. <3
Meeting new folks is a scary but humbling experience every time, both in person and online. I love getting to say hello to y'all, but unfortunately I've gotten burned out on "hi, how are you" type messages. I've just re-added my Discord if you prefer that method of contact over others, but please let me know who you are if sending a friend request, and I'll be more likely to reply to comments and questions rather than a 'hi' or 'hru'.
Keep being you; keep being amazing!

Additional Gallery Site
Posted 2 years agoFuraffinity has been and continues to be my go-to site for uploading and sharing all of my furry artwork commissions, and now I'm slowly re-uploading art to Itaku! It's surely not a perfect website, but I appreciate its tagging system and built-in tools and methods for requesting and posting commissions, including YCH's.
Every art piece I've gotten and will get are being uploaded here on FA already, and that won't stop for the foreseeable future. But I'd appreciate it if you gave Itaku a look and considered following my re-growing gallery there: https://itaku.ee/profile/quintree

Convention Travel Plans '23
Posted 2 years agoReaching the halfway point of 2023, there's tentatively 3 more cons I at least want to visit this year. Will you be attending any of these?
Definitely attending:
Anthrocon June29-July3 Pittsburgh, PA
Bewhiskered Dec29-31 Durham, NC (oh golly this one might be a scheduling nightmare, but I'm committed to attending and volunteering some security team shifts!)
Maybe attending?
Megaplex Sept14-16
I currently have one friend thinking about Megaplex. I'd be a lot more inclined to go if I knew more attendees or heard some firsthand experience about how great the con was in previous years.
Lastly, I'm considering going to Anthro New England again in early 2024 (Jan18-21 Boston, MA). Think that's worth a second visit?
Hope to meet many more of you in person, ideally trotting about as my soft horse self in fursuit!

Celebrating age and pride
Posted 2 years agoYesterday was my birthday, and I had an absolute blast. Spent half the day with family in person, the rest online with friends - and all throughout got to eat so much good food, including more snacks and desserts than usual.
I used that day to share that I now identify as grey-ace, with an upload of a simply perfect commission drawn by
ArtieNuki: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/51966161/ To quickly summarize what that sexuality means, I think of a scale of measurement between asexuality (complete or near-total lack of sexual drive/desire) and a 'typical' sexual drive, or libido. Grey-ace falls somewhere in the middle of the two scale ends. While I do dream of one day having a serious, intimate romantic partner, I am not driven on a daily basis to find that for myself, plus I find that I'm uncomfortable viewing most explicit sexual artworks. My orientation may change one day (which somewhat scares me; I prefer having a solid foundation in identity and knowing who I am), but grey-ace feels just right for me today. And I couldn't be happier. (I recommend reading https://asexuality.org/?q=grayarea for more info about the term!)
As a bonus, if you like short fictional stories about fat horses, please check out this lovely upload that
Qu the shark wrote for me as a birthday gift. I love it! And it'd mean the world to me if you gave it a read, too: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/51966246/
Up next, Furry Weekend Atlanta in just under two weeks!! Hope to see some of y'all there, don't be shy to say hello and ask for hugs!

Social Media Shenanigans
Posted 2 years agoOkay wow, I let my "queue" of watched FA submissions go above 14k. I can't hope to ever 'make it' through all those and click Favorite on my, well, favorites. I'm sorry to the friends and artists I didn't get to, but I'm going to hit the nuke button soon so I can feel empowered to fave submissions again, hopefully on a regular basis so it doesn't build up like it has recently. I owe y'all favorites and comments!
While thinking about social media practices, I recently made a sort of chart that describes my least and most favorite messages/notes to receive: (warning, it's on my mature NSFW twitter) https://twitter.com/EquineTree/stat.....8566216732699/
I love getting to chat with you folks, familiar and new! Just be aware that we might not bond as great friends immediately, and I am unfortunately burned out on small talk (think of things like Hi! / Hello / How are you? / I'm good / That's good to hear <3). Hope that clarifies why I don't accept Discord friend requests much at all, and I'm more than happy to chat on places like Telegram or in Twitter DMs.

Meet a horse? Quintree Cons 2023
Posted 3 years agoI've started tracking my furry con plans on my profile page! In case you weren't aware, I'm definitely attending 4 cons next year, starting with Anthro New England just next month (January 20-22, Boston MA). Blue Ridge FurFare (early Spring) will be a small, online-only event, so maybe that doesn't count by some people's standards, but I'll participate where I can still. Furry Weekend Atlanta (May 11-14, Atlanta GA) and Bewhiskered (Fall, NC) will be my highlights of the year; I'm thrilled to go back to each of those!
In chronological order, here are other conventions I'm ~maybe considering~ traveling to. Think any of these I should bump up to my "definitely" category?
Furnal Equinox (March 17-19, Toronto Canada) I've never been to Canada before
Anthrocon (June 29 - July 2, Pittsburgh PA)
Eurofurence (August 2-6, Berlin Germany) across the Atlantic? Maybe??
Megaplex (September 14-16, Orlando FL)

Quintree and Notifications
Posted 3 years agoThought I'd give a sneak peek into how my brain operates, regarding online notifications. Notes, messages, DMs, group chats, and alerts for new stuff.
I treat unread notifications like a to-do list. If there's an indicator, I ought to check on it eventually. I'll mute that area if I don't want to routinely check all of its new content. This has unfortunately led me to having a "queue" of FA submissions that I want to look at, and click favorite on my faves! But this site's interface to sift through them all makes it a challenge for me to browse en masse and efficiently mark my favorites and clear away the ones I've already viewed. If you don't see me favorite your uploads despite me watching you, it's sitting in my 'queue' and I apologize for it. It'd take me a few hours of dedicated FA browsing to get through my (currently) 7k watched submissions, but I want to someday!
Messages from strangers are strangely exciting for me. Notes on FA, message requests on twitter, that kind of thing. It sincerely makes my day when someone new wants to reach out and tell me they love my characters and the art I've commissioned! I just get anxious when someone asks very quickly "I want to be friends with you! :D" - I build friendships slowly over time. Please understand I already have groups of people I spend time with and energy on, just to keep up with them. I am more than happy to chat! Just don't be disappointed if I don't use the word 'friend' with you even when you make me smile, laugh or blush.
Last thing I want to mention, my energy and mood come and go; swing down and up at different times. I'll hold your message in the "unread queue" by not clicking our chat till I'm ready to read and likely reply quickly. If I've seen your message and don't reply, it's because I didn't have anything I want to say. I've gotten better at being direct when something makes me uncomfortable or simply dislike a phrasing, so know that you're welcome to leave comments and send messages! Bring a little more than "hi", and we can have a conversation (I prefer Telegram most).
Hope that makes sense, and let me know if you have tips for managing messages (or FA submission lists >_>) that work for you!

Quintree's going to cons
Posted 3 years agoWhelp, the thing I thought I'd never do in a million years has now happened twice, with more to come. I went to furry conventions!
I originally was going to attend Bewhiskered 2021 with a best friend, but he wasn't able to attend due to registrations capped by hotel & covid restrictions. But I still had my registration, so I offered some hours to volunteer for the staff on site during the con back in November. Watched doors, managed crowds, moved chairs, and did a little building and crafting, but overall was a treat to attend! That marked the first time I ever saw protogens, manokits, and dutch angel dragons in person, and I was mesmerized. Got hooked enough to follow the next con in NC, Blue Ridge Furfare, which was just this past weekend. This time I worked as a volunteer staff position, mostly on security duties. Some minor hiccups behind the scenes, but golly that was incredible to work at and see. That con had a larger cap on attendees, yet BRFF sold out, too!
Up next, I'm attending only as an attendee, hopefully can put aside any volunteering roles to just ... BE at a con. I've got a room booked for FurryWeekendAtlanta in May, which will easily be the biggest event I've ever attended by member count. And I just might have the time and resources to make it to Anthrocon as well this year - think I should add that to my travel planner?
Cons are generally scary for introverted folks, but find yourself the right group of people to stick to and trust, and furry conventions turn into a roller coaster of fun unlike no other. I latched to the NCAS teams running Bewhiskered and BRFF, but will be meeting online friends for the first time at FWA (plus a few I've met in person once before).
Hope to see y'all there!
And hopefully my fursuit will be complete by the FWA trip AAAAAAA

One year in the community
Posted 4 years agoBy complete coincidence, I uploaded the newer reference for Quintree (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/44222899/) on the exact day I uploaded the original ref (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/38754964/) last year, which was my first ever art commissioned as a furry character. After dozens of commissions, hundreds of new folks, and over a thousand hours in vrchat, I'm quite solidly comfortable with my furry identity as a Missouri Fox Trotter horse today! I have more to learn and more to see, but I'm sincerely humbled to have been welcomed, encouraged, and befriended by so many in this vast community and fandom. With the right comfort zones, I've even been allowed to really indulge into things I once thought were too weird to engage, but even made friends in the hungriest of moods.
Up next is real conventions! With vaccines fighting back this awful global pandemic (I got mine, and must recommend you do, too), there's a greater chance to safely meet other furries at cons - which I've never been to before. Sure, I've attended virtual cons like Furality (and they're amazing!), but I get to visit a small local con in November this year, then am making plans to attend Furry Weekend Atlanta in Spring 2022! Of course, one day... I may even get a Quintree fursuit, especially with the new ref that doesn't use gradient color transitions. I was lucky enough to try on a friend's full fursuit a few months ago, and I practically changed from a no-touchy-introvert to the most huggable person in the room for the 30 minutes I was in suit. What an experience, to be surrounded by so much immense soft comfort all over! Quintree fursuit, when, indeed!
To everyone that's chatted in vrchat and discord, connected via twitter, or favorited/commented on my uploads, many many thanks. I'm a happy content horse to be here <3
