Weird dream
Posted 14 years agoDreamed I got banned from a real-life version of Space Station 13, ended up at my dad's house where for some reason Vincent and some other furs were there, and there was a great "murder" mystery/whodunit where it was revealed a "ghost artist" from Soviet Russia had done most of Vincent's art, and for some reason I was tripping my balls off at that point of the dream because all the colors were going crazy. That's what I get for staying up till 5 in the morning.

They Might Be Giants concert aftermath
Posted 14 years agoOh man. I got front and center thanks to a lovely young lady I knew and her friend with a birthday, and was floored to hear them play the entire Flood album, their new tracks, have us do a crazy chanty contest, give us a puppet show, and then do not one, not two, but THREE encores. I was literally hanging on the edge of the stage all night. My knees hurt, my ears are ringing, and I couldn't be happier. Oh, and I got John Linell's water bottle because I was really thirsty. Thanks John.
Why do I never post anything properly formatted here? Because I save all my big fancy writing for research reports, consarnit!

    Entitlement and talent
Posted 14 years agoIt has come to my attention recently that there is a certain feeling of entitlement that comes with a decent skill in a craft or talent. I wonder if the superior ability confers a sense of superiority over others? This is not the case for all talented individuals, so perhaps it varies by context. The more humble talented individuals I've seen express their talents in forums where public praise is usually inhibited. Whether they work in a laboratory, don't get to interact with those that enjoy their work, or simply shun the spotlight, these individuals usually are fairly down to earth, and relieved when people are interested in them for something other than their talent. Others receive praise and reinforcement from admirers, which can sometimes short-circuit things. The constant flow of positive input from fans becomes expected, ordinary, and more praise is needed to achieve that "buzz" of adulation. Oftentimes, I've seen the talent channeled not into improvement, but simply into garnering more praise, usually at the expense of quality. Whereas those that don't receive praise often, or who make sure to take in negative views as well, usually do improve year after year.
Now, this is not always the case, as there are frequently individuals who receive praise and manage to stay professional. These people are usually the "celebrities" of their craft, acknowledged not only in their circles of friends and fans of their particular work, but by those who enjoy the genre they work in. The more humble manage to make it to these heights frequently, but usually in late career, retirement, or after they have died. Those who focus too much on the attention they receive tend to rise quickly, and fall even faster, Vanilla Ice for example.
This is not to say these states are mutually exclusive, sometimes people can slip into one or the other depending on circumstances. Very often, especially in the furry community, an artist will be so inundated with praise and fans that it will be too much, and they humble themselves by distancing techniques, asking for constructive criticism instead of vapid praise, and sometimes even departing from the fandom altogether to pursue traditional means of income.
So I ask you, FA, what is your opinion on this? Do you know of this phenomenon, and what is your experience with it? What other caveats of talent have you noticed? Discuss.

5 things I got to do at the primus/flaming lips concert
Posted 14 years agoThings I got to do at the Primus/Flaming Lips concert:
Find Jesus, because our seat was next to him.
Watch a grown man in a monkey suit slap a stand up guitar around
See what looked like the lead singer of the Who be carried around the audience in a magic bubble.
Get distracted for just a second and when I look back the lead singer of Flaming Lips has gigantic laser shooting hands.
Have giant balloons filled with money hurled at me.
