Starting Out: A Guide To Starting Commissions
Posted 10 years agoAlright so folks for a while have been buggin’ my wife and I to explain to folks how to start doing commissions, and this past week was a huge amount of requests, so I finally sat down and took the time to write that out.
The result is a relatively large article that will most likely be a completely different version of starting commissions than most people are expecting.
Hopefully that works out well for everybody.
Some of the links do not at this moment work, specifically because they’ll link to other articles people have been requesting a lot lately, so if you run into that, don’t worry. All the practical links should work.
Aside from that, you can read the guide here > http://scribble-liberty.weebly.com/.....rting-out.html
If you have any questions, added tips and/or concerns, send me a message here and I’ll respond to them as soon as possible.

Note on BOGO Commissions
Posted 10 years agoHeads up to all my commissioners who qualified for a BOGO in March:
Those'll be getting done one at a time inbetween comic work for those of you who have already specified what you want for your BOGOs. Right now, that's only 2 of you. For those who aren't sure what they want, you've got all the time in the world, no worries. And if you need to know exactly what BOGO you qualified for in terms of style, you're free to ask as well!
Just be aware that they may be slow coming out, possibly as slow as once a week. Right now I'm juggling comic work, I just signed up for a syllabus to improve my art so I've got time to spend on that, in addition to the paid commissions that come in as slots fill up and that's just at-the-desk responsibilities. I'm actually really super glad I chose to toss out Bronycon as an option at the moment because I would have absolutely no time to work on con material XD.
SO YES, that's what's happenin' this month!

Good Day Style Retiring
Posted 10 years agoJust posting a quick reminder that I will not be offering Good Day Style as of May 1st. I've noticed over time that during my burnouts, those commissions are the hardest to get through as I'm not a fan of my inking and I tend to spend far more time and effort on the sketch and paint commissions I receive due to the ability to be far more fast and loose. So in order to keep an efficiency process I want to stick to, I'm dropping them as an option entirely save for very special circumstances.
With that in mind, this is your last chance to order any kind of Good Day Style commissions. I'll only take two commissions before May 1st!

Commissions: Limited
Posted 10 years agoHey folks and welcome to April! Just throwing up the quick note that I will only be offering 2 commission slots per month after this point. My work on the comic has returned and that's pretty much going to cover my time alongside personal projects. Two slots will be open for any type of commission on the first of every month and continue until filled.
April Slots are open, and thanks!

Buy 1, Get 1 Free of Equal Value
Posted 10 years agoAlright guys, sit down for a bit and get comfy, because I’d like your help.
Yesterday, we discovered the Kmart up the road within walking distance is going out of business. Last night we took a jog up there and noticed the totes were on sale. They’re going to be out of business the first week of April.
A good majority of you are already familiar with the fact my wife and I have been trying to move back to our hometown in Kentucky since 2011. Everytime we’ve been trying to get funds and supplies to pack up our house with however has wound up being sucked out due to bills and emergencies.
We need totes desperately for this move. It’d knock off a major step on our list because we’d be able to properly condense our belongings down to where I can see what kind of moving van we need to purchase for the move (which then helps me figure out gas expenses for the 8 hour drive down, and so on.)
So where is this rambling going?
All I’m asking for is for you to spread this as far and wide as you can, and encourage folks to commission myself and my wife.
To add onto that, if you commission me specifically, I’ll cut you a deal as a huge thank you since this move means the world to us.
Buy 1, Get 1 Free of equal value.
So if you buy a $25 full body, you’ll get a full body for free whenever you want another commission.
If you buy a $200 reference sheet? Yep. You can have a $200 reference sheet for free when you need another one.
The paid commissions will take priority instantly, whereas the free commissions will be after all paid commissions are completed, but the deal’s the same. Buy 1, get 1 free.
If you want to take help us out and take advantage of this, you have until March 15th! That’ll be enough time to grab some totes and we can finally progress with the next step of the move. Thank you~!

Furnace Update + Cats
Posted 11 years agoSo unfortunately, while we did receive a good chunk of donations for the furnace replacement, it is nowhere near what we need to replace the furnace. We're going on day 3 with no heat, stove/oven and hot water.
To remedy part of this issue, we'll be getting some small space heaters (roughly $20-40 a piece) in order to get the house warmed back up. Partially for us, but mostly for the cats, who've started nesting under every blanket we can find.
We're also going to need some wet cat food, something we don't normally have the ability to afford.
Back in 2011, Itty Bitty was attacked by a stray cat and it fractured her lower jaw. We got it healed and medicated for the most part, but ever since, she's had issues eating hard or large food pieces. With the heater being out, she's showing signs that her jaw is affecting how she eats. She's stopped eating the hard cat food and we've been feeding her turkey and chicken bits along with the soft cat treats we always buy for her.
If anyone wants to help out with that particular crisis, my commissions are open for that. One full body sketch would easily pay for at least a box of wet cat food for her to have through the month!
Thanks guys!

Commissions List: Update
Posted 11 years agoAlright, so to add onto the post I made last night in regards to commissions status, I went ahead and booted up what many other artists are doing these days: Trello!
Trello is a card based system that has a wide range of customization, and overall it proves a lot more intuitive than your standard spreadsheet. Folks will be able to view their cards and progress, as well as see the exact deadline for their piece!
Access it here! https://trello.com/b/Q323ct3Q/commissions

Commissions List
Posted 11 years agoFor those waiting on commissions, thank you for being patient. You may have noticed a severe stall in my uploading dates. This is because on Jan 1st I implemented my resolution, which is to complete a commission within one day and a maximum of one week. So rest assured that I am not dead and that your commission will arrive shortly. It’s just I’m really trying to get on a set schedule so that waits will not have to be this long in the future and so I can focus on putting all of my extra time into personal projects and gifts.
REMINDER: Holiday Sale Prices END in 3 DAYS
Posted 11 years agoJust a quick reminder that the Holiday Sale Prices located in my gallery will be expiring in 3 DAYS. If you want one with those prices, message me as soon as possible via DA, Tumblr, or email at Rattlecat@gmail.com.
For folks on the current commission list, I apologize for the slight delay. I was hit yesterday with a huge bout of sickness passed on by my roommate and am pretty much barely coherent with meds on board. I will get you your commission sketches shortly.

Art Mentorship
Posted 12 years agoHey folks! I apologize for the lack of submissions you'll see from me this month. On the 11th of May I started a rigorous mentorship to improve my artwork from now until July 13th, and so my focus has solely been on that. Since FurAffinity is more catered towards the furries, until we start the animal work I won't be uploading much.
For folks that want to keep a lead on my improvement, check out my DA: http://rattlesire.deviantart.com/gallery. I've got a class folder solely for all of the assignments I'm working on.

Bitcoin Boom
Posted 12 years agoHey folks! I hope everyone's doing alright and having an awesome Spring so far. I'm not sure how many of you are taking Spring break right now but if you are, then I hope it's a great one!
Also hope everyone had a great Easter!
First off, addressing my commissioners. I know you've probably noticed two names that have been on my list since January that are slow moving at the moment. They're part of a huge group image I've been working on a piece at a time, and I'm probably going to be spending the next week or two on them. So I apologize in advance for the horrendous delay. These guys have been waiting patiently since the start and are the final commissioners from January. Afterwards I'll be tackling February's commissions quickly. I want to try to catch up to mid March by the end of this month.
I don't expect too many April commissions (Even after my commission sheet is posted), mostly because I know it'll take time for the set prices to sink in and work their way around Deviantart and other websites, so my focus is mainly on ones in the queue. If you've been patiently waiting, thank you so much for doing so!
For Pick Your Price Commissioners: Since PYP is over, you have the option of adding commissions as you so choose (beyond the original 3 commission limit), and will be rounded into the queue with any additions until April 15th. That way I have a steady stream and if you happen to enjoy my work enough to ask for more, you may do so before the new commission sheet comes out! Thanks a lot!
If anyone's into finance, how many of you folks have been keeping an eye on the Bitcoin? I just finally dug into the research of it today, and I'm all aboard. My next commission sheet will allow folks the option to pay in Bitcoin for those of you grabbing the Bitcoin Boom train. If you don't know what it is, I highly advise you to Google search and dig into it yourself. It may very well be the future.
Current Price per Bitcoin last I checked at Mtgox was $139 per. That's a pretty penny if you ask me! I'm working my way up to my first. Good luck!
Also hope everyone had a great Easter!

Last Call For Commissions

Conventions, Commissions, College
Posted 12 years agoHeyo, folks! Good morning to you!
Few bits of information for you:
1. I went ahead and re-opened my FurAffinity account. I myself could be classified as a 'furry' depending on the definition you're running with. More or less I've always had a fursona and have no problem with anthros in any rating of any medium whatsoever. In addition, this will help build up some mature content on my end since I don't actually draw it myself that often (Don't feel like I can actually). Plus it gives my work another audience, which is always nice. If you'd like to find me over there, I'm Rattlecat!
2. I'm probably going to have about 4 days off from any classes since right now it's at that point where I'm done all of my current classes and they're getting ready to close up and grade, and there's a bunch of new ones starting. No official starts until April 1st, and the ones still going on I've already finished the course work for. Which means more time for art!
3. Bronycon is still a go, by all means. I am slowly but surely pumping out prints one at a time. Hopefully I'll have all of it done by June and have some time to take background pony requests, but I'd like to think my current list already fulfills them.
4. I am right now only 50% sure about attending Otakon at all and that number is dwindling quickly. I checked into their website regarding prices and rules and I'll be honest, I put my money into places I support and I encourage people to put money into places they support. However, Otakon has problems. Particularly, there's the issue of tables. We only planned on one, but only two folks can be behind a table, and we probably will have three attending. While this normally wouldn't be a problem, let's face it: My wife and I are pretty inseparable because we keep each other running, so it makes attending panels on our own rather boring and less engaging. That's just how we tend to run things. The deal was if we got a table, there's no problem of running around, which I hadn't intended on doing in the first place since Otakon's panels haven't been that interesting enough to go to in the past few years.
But I think my main issue is their rather hard-assed micromanagement rules on portfolio work, table display and overall their issue with fanart. Now, I understand mature content, there's no problem in that department. My issue is their demand that only 50% of the work displayed both in portfolio and on display be fanart. Down to the point you need stickers in your portfolio to display whether or not something is fanart or not.
News flash: If someone can't determine if something is original or fanart by content alone, then there probably shouldn't be a difference made whatsoever.
Otakon states their goal is to showcase an artist's talent and work. If this is the case, then fanart should have no more or no less privilege of being available to the public eye along side original work in any amount. An artist's talent flows into both original and fan work. And their work is their work. All of it made by their hand is their work. What you're doing at this point is being selective and picky.
I don't know what it is with people insisting you showcase original work only, or draw fanart only, but let's face it. Most of us were drawing our favorite characters from a young age and still do. Most of us request fanart or request work that has characters we've made for a series we're a fan of. And frankly, I'm of the belief that if someone comes to you and wants a picture of one of your characters, then they are a fan of that character and therefore, you are contributing fanart. Fanart is no different than original work outside of the license holder. The artist doesn't use any different type of "magic brush" to create fanart and then save all the "special brushes" to draw their original art.
Should folks be more creative and have their own projects and characters? Sure, but don't put down the idea that fanart is some sort of disease that must be cured. It's where most people start and learn and evolve. It's a huge learning tool that is resourceful, engaging, and makes a lot of people WANT to go through all the hard work of beginning and continuing a craft.
As you can see, I have a pretty hard take on it, and I'm not willing to support something I just don't see the logic in, regardless of whether it's my money, someone else's money, or even a freebie. If you want to showcase an artist's talent and work, then you showcase all of it, regardless of what the content matter is outside of maturity rating (which I have my own views on but hey, let's keep this simple.). I won't mention the sheer insult of having someone dictate what goes into my portfolio either. Especially if I'm not being hired for salary or contract.
So I'm thinking of just rubbing Otakon off the list. I'm not finding any panels interesting enough to spend a whole weekend for and while I could use the opportunity to go around and be social, I could also be using said opportunity to be at home working on commissions with a wider audience that isn't restricted solely to location. I may consider invites based on if one of my family members go or a few artists insist for whatever reason, but again, it's about 50% up in the air.
So for right now, it's just Bronycon.
5. Aside from that quick little rant, I've been jumping back and forth in emails with two admissions officers for CalArts in California and Ringling in Florida. Right now it's mostly just gauging their non-degree programs and whether or not I can get in. If you're not up to par with my stance on education, I'm under the belief degrees are a dying entity in the world, at least regarding their sole value outside of expenses. Today you can't just simply say a degree is worth it, then dish out 160K in student loans only to be working entry-level/non-degree required jobs afterwards to pay them off.
Since I have this stance, I'm very picky about attending any form of institute, college or university. I don't actually have the willpower myself to muster up hours of practice, draw and redraw a day, and my main purpose for possibly attending CA or R is to get that habit knocked into me in a more open environment. No better place than a campus, right? With that in mind, I also have no interest in pursuing a full program, because some classes I honestly believe I can do without and still push forward (I'm talking more along the lines of your standard academic classes that are used as refresher/filler classes to move you into "college-graded academics". Which is great if I was pursuing something that honestly required them.).
All I want is to just get some new resources, techniques, and viewpoints on what I can do to improve my art. A lot of that I can get online, or pay a lump sum to take a seminar. It's just the willpower and getting up to do hours of practice that is so far not available to me at the moment XD.
So right now it's down to running back and forth between admissions to see if these are applicable. So far the results have been "Yes" but there's a lot of other things to consider and re-arrange in order to accommodate the program for me to qualify and run as a non-degree/certificate student. Why CalArts and Ringling? Only places so far I've discovered that have programs that pretty much fill the agenda of everything I need without resorting to filler classes I'm not interested in paying for.
So we shall have to see!
I think that's all of the information thus far! Have views on fanart and original work? Views on college versus seeking out your own education? Have any books, lectures, videos or content that has personally helped you in your own career? Any experiences or stories you'd like to share? Do so in the comments!
Stay sweet!

Stay sweet!
Why On Earth Am I Even Here?
Posted 12 years agoI'm here on FurAffinity to sort of rack up a bit more on the...okay well, mature side. I'm not going to lie. I'm trying to build a portfolio to get into CalArts for 2014, and it requires me to build at least 6 months alongside basic figure, gesture, composition and value projects.
As a result, I've got most of my commissions running for Pick Your Price. But as you can see, I've got a ton of tame stuff. Why the mature? Why not. Because of the exaggerated fetishes and overall just the lack of clothing, there's no better subject to tackle when trying to develop better anatomy skills. And hey, I'm pretty much open to anything.
So just because you don't see it in my gallery, doesn't mean I don't draw it. It's just because no one's commissioned me for it yet, and I haven't found a reason to draw it myself. But by all means, intrigue me! I've got 19 spots (as of writing this journal) to fill for Pick Your Price.
After April 1st, I will have a normal commission sheet up based on the records of the Pick Your Price. So if you want to obtain Pick Your Price privileges, you gotta be on that queue of 20 people.
You can purchase commissions and obtain more information on them here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10179198/
Thanks a lot for the watches, favorites and comments guys! I'm sort of stacked high regarding my schedule at the moment so I cannot be as chatty with everything! But I promise, I am watching! <3

Warning
Posted 12 years agoThis is where I warn new followers of the following information:
If it exists, it can be ponified.
Just putting that out there solely because well...you're gonna see a lot of it.

Guess Who's Back!
Posted 12 years agoWhelp, decided to hop back over here. Since most of my work has been nothing but ponies as of late, I might as well bring it over here.
I am...still iffy on uploading everything I have available at the moment, mostly because if I were to upload this year alone we're looking at more than 65+ pieces. So I think I may choose some select ones or just start uploading from this point forward.
If you want to view my complete gallery, visit my Deviantart: http://rattlesire.deviantart.com.
I also recommend contacting me there or by email rather than here. I have a lot of sites to keep up with and I can't always guarantee I'll see your message otherwise! Once I get into the habit of posting here, that should change, but until then, keep that in mind!
Thanks!
